    Well done, Alan! That's one project I haven't tackled yet. Just now making a lamp base, so RUclips suggested this timely posting.

    Wow Alan that looked very challenging and you made it look easy and you let us know that is wasn't. I appreciate the video and the time it takes to do them, this was another of your very well made videos. Great stuff. Thank you!

    So awesome. No way would I try that at this point. I had already seen that the final piece came out great, and I was still holding my breath for you on those last few rounds of hollowing!

    Wow! Great looking project! I have a medium sized segmented chunk that has been sitting around my woodshop for the past 2 years. I think I will attempt a lampshade for a Christmas present to my mom. I'm thinking a wood dye would be cool too. Awesome video! thanks!

    Very cool! Hollowing that deep without those fancy hollowing tools is not easy.
    Im a rookie turner and i still find it more safe to use a parting tool for the process,i get a lot of tearouts but it always works!

    • @AsWoodTurns
      @AsWoodTurns  9 лет назад

      +Atle Grønsund use whatever tool you are comfortable with. Just be safe in the process. As you develop better control, tearouts will be reduced.

    The acrylic disk turning gave me an idea: What if alternating pieces of acrylic and wood were glued up in a stack and then turned, allowing for light transmission through the acrylic with an ultimately thicker wall for easier and safer turning? I suspect that an epoxy resin or CA glue would have be used for the bonding agent between wood and acrylic. A proper bond would have be tested prior to turning a big piece. There are "green edge" type acrylics available that look more like glass, too. I look forward to seeing the other turned lamp elements!

    • @AsWoodTurns
      @AsWoodTurns  9 лет назад +1

      +YasumotoUS CA would be brittle so epoxy would be the best choice. Interesting idea.

  • @rimar2000

    ¡GREAT! It looks very nice, and surely is a hard work.
    I see you did not soaked it in oil. That would increase a lot the transparency of that beautiful lamp shade.
    Another tip: the acrylic disc should be more pierced (drilled, holed) to allow good air flow. Otherwise the contraption will overheat.

    • @AsWoodTurns
      @AsWoodTurns  9 лет назад

      +rimar2000 Osvaldo J. Schiavoni That may be a good idea after all. Mine needs more transparency.
      Holes in the acrylic are a good idea - also don't use a standard incandescent bulb - LED only.

    That exploding problem is easy to fix, Just tightly wrap the workpiece with stretchy clear food wrap the total length of the piece. Then give it a couple wraps of duct tape on both ends. Make sure you wrap in the rite direction so it doesn't want to unwrap while turning. the plastic wrap keeps the tape from sticking to the wood and supports the shade. Works for me.

    • @AsWoodTurns
      @AsWoodTurns  9 лет назад

      +George Daruda Sounds like a great tip to give me a lot of peace of mind. Now if I can control my tool to avoid a catch, I'll be in great shape.
      Thank you

    nice piece alan! I tried my hand at lampshades a year or so ago and it went okay....except for the fact that my wall thickness wasn't very even and the light only shown through in some places lol :)Best regards,Peter

    No picture with the light on? C'mon, you know we need that! Let's see that glow.

    • @AsWoodTurns
      @AsWoodTurns  9 лет назад +1

      +Josef Roesler The cedar is not as translucent as pine so not so much glow for a daylight picture to take.
      Sorry,

    Is there a concern of a heat build-up that would melt the plastic top or catch the shade itself on fire?

    • @AsWoodTurns
      @AsWoodTurns  9 лет назад

      +Gary McCoy That's why I like CFD's or LED's. I could also cut holes in the acrylic for more air flow. I would not use an incandescent near wood although most every normal lampshade in my house is cloth or plastic. Hmmm....
