Woodturning - The Sycamore Lamp

- Nice piece of Sycamore I obtained from my own garden, started turning this a few months back now. Was rough turned and then left for final drying for about two months.
Finished in Danish Oil only, then polished with beeswax.

Wonderful. On a future video, would you be willing to add a little notification of when you pause for sharpening? I am curious how often sharpening is necessary on things like this.
Only about twice on this, Sycamore is relatively easy to turn 👍
When you are turning, if you notice the tool is not doing as well as it was, when you started, sharpen it. That is one thing that I have always done when in doubt, sharpen it.

Hi Matt the Sycamore wood is lovely it's got nice grain and I like the imperfections in it they are great, I like the spalting in it as well. You really are a clever and superb woodturner and craftsman. The design of this lamp is really unique and magnificent well done. Thanks for sharing. Awesome workmanship. Just one suggestion. I can't make out if the lamp you have used is LED based, because if you're using an LED lamp, then you could incorporate a small lithium battery and charger inside that base globe, so that the light will remain on during a power failure.

Nice wood pattern, great idea..but I kind of agree with other guy, blocky looking. Maybe do something hand carving a pattern around body of shade, let more light out?
Great craftsmanship but just my opinion bulky and unattractive lamp. Not my cup of tea but the craftsmanship is beautiful.

Most of my wood comes from maintenance work from trees, the tree still remains there to grow.

Love the bottom of the lamp, the ball, but not the “lampshade”. But your work is exceptional.

Great turning, but that's a pretty large trunk for a small prong drive, gulp..

When you first hefted the log onto the lathe I was reminded of the old cartoon where they whittled a tree into a toothpick 😂. Very nice job on the piece, IMHO 👌👏👍

It's not exactly an elegant piece, and I bet it's heavy as well. It also doesn't look like it gives off much light; the room is still pitch dark.
Its not that heavy, but it's not made for lifting, and have you ever heard of mood lightning?

It's called "mood lighting". Anyway, I wouldn't be in the mood to do anything in the dark, except sleep.
What is that boring bar at 3:15 with the wires coming out of it?
It's a hollowing tool, the wires are going to a camera that is mounted above, there is a dot on the screen that shows me where the tool is inside the piece I'm turning

Love your work Matt ... you sure have a creative mind. Your videos are outstanding and your products are beyond professional!! A general question...when you have a really big log like this one, do you start with a slower RPM, and then speed up as the diameter of the wood gets smaller? Thanks sharing your work with us!
Thanks, always start slow and work the speed up as it balances out. As a guide I turn the speed up till I see the lathe start to wobble, then back it off a bit

Honestly thought you were going thinner on the shade but after I noticed the hole I understand at least I think why you didn’t. Very nice piece. Always liked hand made lamps. Such character👍🏻🔥
Thanks, I was thinking about adding some clear epoxy to allow me to go thinner, but decided against it to leave it all natural
