I'd been so excited about seeing old unit kits return that I forgot entirely about characters. Being a High Elf player, a part of me is glad that a lot (if not all?) of the characters I've already painted will be present in the era, but another part of me will be jealous to see factions like The Empire get all new characters with new models, magic items, and special rules.
We could see Thangrim Firebeard - he is the King holding Karag Dum. I just hope they release some novels and im happy to see new characters - their stories made the world alive.
Great rundown. Hopefully we get a load of Black Library novels to go with this game introduction. Great stories will cement the narrative of this time to the game, giving us new special characters to love. Drachenfels- what a lot of great stories to tell there, along with Genevieve.
I love that model, but Dieter was actually from nearly 1000 years earlier! He's mentioned in the Undead book as being active 1207-1244 whereas The Old World game is looking like it will be set around 2200.
The old world article says "The game will be set firmly within the Old World Itself... ...during the decades immediately before the Great War Against Chaos and the Siege of Praag." English isn't my first language, but that sounds like a few decades, not 8 decades before. I think some old Dwarf characters could be coming back. Kragg the Grim is over 1000 years old, maybe even as old as 1600 years. Dwarfs characters don't usually have ages mentioned, but Thorek has ruled over weapon shops of Karak Azul for centuries according to later 6th edition book, so maybe he could be around?
They established that the king of Bretonnia is Louen the Orc Slayer, who we thus far only know of from a single piece of history which mentioned in 2201 he launched a crusade against the orcs in Bretonnia. So that's why I think it's likely at the earlier end of the century (as humans are not that long lived).
Drazhoath the Ashen was Lord of the Black Fortress and commander of the Legion of Azgorh in Warhammer Fantasy and was exiled to the Black Fortress by Astragoth Ironhand several centuries earlier, so both characters should be around in the Old World, but it's not clear if events take place before or after Drazhoath's exile.
I checked, and Kemmler didn't become active until nearly 200 years later. He was around for over 100 years so it feels like he's been there ages but in the scheme of the history of the Old World he's practically a mayfly!!
@@90percentgeek Who knows, maybe one day we can branch out to "old" events and charcaters. The Old World back where it was kinda. or - the game spanning a long time..
I don't have my old army books to hand, but I was really surprised to hear you say that none of the Dwarf special characters would have been around in the century before the Great War Against Chaos.
I am apparently incorrect in that regard, Thorek Ironbrow at the very least was alive at the time The Old World will be set but many of the other famous characters were still either yet to be born or very very young and yet to play a role in the worlds events.
@@90percentgeek Kragg the Grim, the greatest Runelord of the Warhammer Fantasy era, forges his first Rune of Stone in the year 892. So he’s still a vital ~1500y years old during TOW 😅
Awesome video! I agree, really the old is beautiful when you push and have these named and we’ll known characters. I hope that we get Walach Harkon since I believe he is active in this time, unless I’m wrong.
@@90percentgeekI would also love the return (and finally a model) of my favorite character from the 5th edition book, Belannear. He was already a powerful Loremaster at the time of TOW and shows u at many important moments throughout the Warhammer history.
Good guesses all around! Minor correction: while not yet High King, Thorgrim Grudgebearer WAS around during the time of TOW. I would like to see some of the Chaos characters return who were introduced in the 5th edition "Champions of Chaos" supplement. Arbaal the Undefeated could see a new model, and while Count Mordrek and Valnir the Reaper never had models, they had rules and background mentioning them alive during the TOW period. Valnir fought at Praag (same as Arbaal), so both of these would make sense to see new models.
I love the characters from the Champions of Chaos book! I bought it for a friend for his birthday when it came out, and was disappointed he never converted any of the characters for it. Maybe I should give it a go!
@@90percentgeek Oh definitely! While I expect the Fay Enchantress to make a return, I do wonder whether its actually gonna be Morgiana le Fay or not. Afterall, 'Fay Enchantress' is a position, not a person, atleast as far as the Bretonnians believe. On the same note, I wonder whether they stick with End Times' confirmation that the Enchantress is indeed a human, or go back to 6th edition Bret' armybook lore with her being just a Wood Elf Spellsinger in disguise.
They should stick to Morgiana Le Fey a sort of French Witch Enchantress theme then spin in the Wood Elf Spellsinger in disguise as well underneath that, for typicial Warhammer disguised humour imo. End Times was just a total lack of imagination by GW as well as a corporate/legal direction... :-((
I'd be happy to see all the Dwarf characters return as models. GW has the casts for the models and just needs to make them and then sell them afterall. They should also create some new characters if they can come up with any good designs. Bugman, White Dwarf, Gotrek and the others, they should all be released.
True, they could re-release them as models even if they couldn't be used as special characters because they weren't around at the time of The Old World.
@@90percentgeek My guess, GW wants to cash-back-in on OW via old fans and Total War buzz so it makes sense to add the option and fingers-x some new chars too.
It's so odd to listen to you talk about Warhammer Fantasy and feel nostalgic for it as someone who has never played the table top before but experienced it through TW and V2. I can't wait to enjoy this new edition of Warhammer Fantasy.
I think the story of Warhammer Fantasy lends itself to a certain nostalgia. Even when it was still a going game, I felt a degree of nostalgia about it, because it had been around for so long and had a weight of history.
@@90percentgeek That's definitely true given the fantasy/medieval setting. It's a shame so many won't be included to begin with given they were lost when the end times happened. But hopefully they redo the ones who are available in nice new plastic kits.
Actually he took the throne in 2163 and we reckon The Old World will be set after 2200 as that's when Louen the Orcslayer was on the Bretonnian throne and we know he's king of Bretonnia in the new game. So Phoenix King Finubar model is a possibility!
If you say so. But I always heard that as Phoenix King he didn't lead armies, so I figured for him to be a military leader it would be in his seafearing days.
A very good point. If we get to the Great War Against Chaos then we will get loads of characters, but at the moment I figured it would just be all the Daemon characters like Skabrand or Epedemius that would be out and about.
