Do you know how well the Fireforge stuff works scalewise next to GW stuff? The Minis from the Perrys always look to small. Problem of true scale vs heroic scale.
Their Albion knights kit (under the "Forgotten World" header) is also a great choice for more high fantasy knights. You may opt to use multiple different Fireforge knight kits from throughout their ranges, to represent different kinds of knight units. With the more mundane looking Crusader kits for Knights Errant, to the Albion kits as Questing Knights. (The Albion range also just _has_ Pegasus Knights, so that fills that hole in the Bretonnian range.)

@VentrueMinis cool, I've been out of fantasy for about 20 years and after recently finding a small part of my old Hochland army, I'm thinking of building a new Middenland force, I think using Frostgrave Barbarians (or even just the Frostgrave soldiers) as state militia, and use WGA conquistadors as state troops, cos they have that beardy rough style combined with a metropolitan style of their cities.
I'm really glad someone is talking about Unit Fillers. It's a crazy underappreciated "tech" in the hobby, that doesn't get discussed that much anymore. At least not in modern Warhammer, on account of rank-and-flank until now going the way of the dodo. Perhaps once the Old World drops, we'll see people rediscover it. Personally, I think Unit Fillers _could_ work in round-base games. By way of gluing multiple round bases together into a cluster and using that as an oddly-shaped regular "round" base. (A way you might glue them together would be to use wood craft sticks or possibly sprues to bridge the gaps on top, and keep the whole thing rigid and together). From there, it's a matter of creating the diorama as normal. (I'm planning on adding "round-base" filler for my undead army. Like taking one of the extra skeleton bodies from the Wargames Atlantic kit, sticking four spear arms onto the sockets, and creating a kind of spear-legged, quadruped skeleton spider. You know, to hang out in the middle of my other skeletons. Maybe make two, with one using a cow skull.) Back when I first learned of Unit Fillers, I did a trawl of old forums where people talked about them or posted pictures. Accepted practice/etiquette during the WHFB days - to the point it got repeated almost word for word over multiple years and across forums - is that a Unit Filler should comprise a third of the total unit size or less, be situated in the center of the block (so you can easily "make change" with models already removed from the back row), and make sure the filler is always more creative than the unit it's replacing (no low-effort filler, as it betrays your interests are _singularly_ on being cheap). So a unit of dwarves where 90% of the block is made of (a) big rock/rocks, with no flairs, is kind of scummy. Whereas a few bases worth of a lovingly rendered forge, or some dwarves drinking (even passing out) next to kegs, would be good. It shows you actually care about how your unit looks. (Although that doesn't mean your Unit Fillers need to be particularly ground-breaking or original. No one who has tried building a Vampire Counts army will blame you for sprinking some spare arms erupting from headstone ground into your big blocks of zombies. Ain't nobody got time to paint 80+ Zombies _per unit,_ least of all in 8th edition).
Looking forward to more of these, well done! The Statetroops at about 01:15 are from the mid 2000s (and indeed terrible sculpts!). Their previous version from the late 90s were done by the Perries, and mix well with other 28mm historicals like the ones you have shown.
Ty!!! I forgot a part of this video - I was going to address the "GW is heroic scale historical minis look bad mixed in". Which I was going to address with your comment - their sculpts have changed scales a lot! It's funny how the pistolier pistol is about double the size of both the old pistols and the modern pistol shown in my witch hunter (made by GW).
As an armored combat nerd, the idea of making a bretonnia army with super historical minis is such a cool idea that I will be doing very soon Edit: Good God Perry minis look so good. Definitely buying when I can
I bought a lot of Perrys for fighting the inner italian Wars before 1494 (I am a historical gamer), but I sideslipped into Fireforged Western Knights. I plan to use them against Perry troops, and I am looking forward to use some GW miniatures as leaders for my Burgundian Army when they get eaten up by Swiss Pikes. I am surprised how close the GW Imperial stuff is to the historical uniforms, and I enjoy the lore, but the GW rules are quite cumbersome.
I encourage new players to get in any way they can. WHFB was a great setting and system. The teasers have been pretty good so far and GW will keep supporting if they sell the books. Obviously, they want to sell models too. Even old players are going to buy new models if GW does this right.
Excellent vid. Lovely models with nice differentiating tidbits throughout with greenstuff. A1 bud 👍 I got the Landsknecht starter army on sale for €98 (normally €121) a while back meself. That's 96 pikemen, 24 Zweihanders and 24 Arquebus/crossbows. It also comes with command options and a few metal officers. I also bought a box of the Wargames conquistadors and Perry foot knights and mounted men at arms. It all goes very well together in my eyes. And I don't even want to imagine what it would have cost to get the same amount of men via GW and their prices.
I don’t remember ever seeing unit fillers in the 90s. Units were much smaller back then so they weren’t really needed. It was in the 6th-8th era that massive blocks of troops became the norm. I think they can look good when used sparingly but that pic of of the night goblins looks awful imo as it doesn’t reflect the actual unit anymore.
Then you're in lucky! I have been watching all the ways to “save money” shown in this video and more - for many years. Despite the fact that the fantasy community claims to be “an elite hobby for respected adults.” Such snobbery, duplicity and hypocrisy pushed me away from this game forever. ⛔
So true and in my Empire/Human army where I have 120 Handgunners, 100 Swordsmen, 100 Spearmen, 85 Halberdiers, 80 Foot Reiksguard, 60 Crossbowmen, 60 Archers and 20 Halflings there are no fillers. Plus this is only what I have painted and have nearly 100 more that are not painted yet. Oh yes there are some ways to get cheaper miniatures but that would require buying from some other company that is not Games Workshop since GW prices are horrible and way over priced.
Great video, thanks for inspiring. Im bought big box Warlord's royal kings army, its about 140+ models and one box with foot knights to make proxy Greatswords , just guys in plates with some 2h wep swords poleaxes and warhammers
In general, there is no reason to worry about the _success_ of the “return of the old world.” It is quite obvious that this will bring GW the same profit as any other their product. Even without community participation! Simply because everything that GW produces is instantly grabbed by scalpers, resellers and other speculators. 🐈⬛
Most of my Empire miniatures are going to be from Battle Masters but I did purchase the Pikes and Schott line for the greatswords and gunners. Currently working on my Tomb Kings and I'm eagerly anticipating the WGA skeleton chariots. Reaper Miniatures also has some nice models for heroes and the like. Most of my Witch hunter and Sisters of Sigmar Mordheim teams are Reaper minis.
Good video, would be good to see you updating this project. My main concern with the alternative mix approach is that in the end, miniatures will not look cohesive within the army. The different sculpting styles show even if you paint them with the same scheme. It will be hard to even match them in the same scale.
I'm finding that it's working well so far! I'm cleaning up the edges and gap filling which is making them work really nicely together. I'll update when they're all painted and let you all judge again :)
Nice approach to the game. I am going the exact opposite at the moment. I am trying to purchase the old metal models from GW and some of the early plastic figures. Quite expensive task I am up to. Very good video. Greetings!

@@VentrueMinis More or less. I also got a few hundred undead halflings, so I'll probably make a Halfling Vampire Counts army while I'm at it. I've heard that the first thing that always happens in a Total Warhammer game is the Moot getting eaten by vamps.
@@VentrueMinis I was also thinking the WGA Halflings would make good "Mootland" themed Empire troops. Make them pike(half)men, or archers. Best part is, they come 40 models to a box, rather than the 24 of most "Landsnecht" plastic kits. So you can go _really_ cheap on troops.
I really liked this video! Could you possibly do the same for the warriors of chaos? I do not dislike GW, but I would personally look a bit more "down to earth", or "gothic viking" look for a warriors of chaos army.
My adive if you plan to make a WFB army or 2 = buy a 3d printer, print the bulk of your army from Highland Minatures (or whoever) and only buy the characters/stand out units from GW.
@@robmcmurrough1897 GW minis are 28mm Heroic vaguely, but 28mm minis rank up just perfectly fine in most cases. The older the GW minis the more like true 28mm they are.
Massive use of alternative historical miniatures such as Medieval Knights and Landsknechts is not one of the main reasons for the closure of old fantasy game? Even then and now there are a lot of pirated resin recasts anywhere. And in general, now is the Era of 3D Printing. What did Games Workshop count on when reviving the Old World, for real?
It definitely was why WHFB died but, as they've said, they're not releasing new kits for every faction. I'll buy the books and new Empire models as I said, but right now, they aren't selling any of the kits I'm proxying on their webstore. One can support OW without spending 500+ dollars for an army :)
Nostalgia and realizing Rank & File is a cake they want a piece of, probably. Having the Status of a specialist game rather than meinline at least puts it under less pressure, I suppose.
Aren’t the warlord minis 28mm and the GW ones 35mm or something? Those scales are really different. Won’t they look like a regiment of pre-teens alongside basketball-players?
The scales are not significantly different! Both are 28mm, but GW's are "heroic" 28mm, meaning that some of the proportions are slightly different. Alone, this difference is really not noticeable. This difference is entirely negated when you kitbash -it just leaves your army looking more unique, not out of scale.
I will say that Warlord's and Wargames Atlantic are the ones I'm using. Again, kitbashing will likely make it all work out! But I haven't experience with Perry's, personally.@@LivingroomTV-me9oz

There is no way to do Warhammer Fantasy the Old World on a budget except for printing all of your miniatures which would require you to have a 3d printer. Or been around 30 years ago and got most of your miniatures back in the early to mid 1990's like I did.
Budget. -looks at my two 3d resin printers with adoration-😂 You won't get cheaper or better miniatures for a fraction of retail. Seriously though Warhammer should have went multibase like Kings of War
Going cheap on an Empire army - take griffons, demigryphs, steam tank, outriders and core knights and wizard on griffon or pegasus. Empire infantry in TOW is unfortunately completely overpriced and uncompetitive compared to pretty much every other army. It’s why current tourney results have Empire placed last. Old school strategy around TVI and infantry blocks are not effective for Empire anymore. Same with priests. Sad but true.

I got my hands on an absurd number of MaxMini halflings for extremely cheap, so I plan to use them as an Empire army. I'll probably have to invest in a decent number of Mantic gunner halflings, but it won't break my bank. Might just go with bow halflings though.
Rad! I know WGA also has some super cool halflings, making a Moot army?
@@Bluecho4 if I end up needing more infantry models, I'm really considering the WGA Halflings!
I'm building Araby as empire. This is helpful for me as its technically empire. Im using Gripping beast Arabs, Perry minis Afghans and some others.
I really liked this video! Could you possibly do the same for the warriors of chaos? I do not dislike GW, but I would personally look a bit more "down to earth", or "gothic viking" look for a warriors of chaos army.
do your think the cavalry from the box of Townsfolk Miniature Pack from archon studio could fit to such an army?
My adive if you plan to make a WFB army or 2 = buy a 3d printer, print the bulk of your army from Highland Minatures (or whoever) and only buy the characters/stand out units from GW.
What size are the minis you've used? Did you say 28mm?
Yep!
@@VentrueMinis is fantasy 28mm as well? Thanks for the reply mate
@@robmcmurrough1897 GW minis are 28mm Heroic vaguely, but 28mm minis rank up just perfectly fine in most cases. The older the GW minis the more like true 28mm they are.
@@VentrueMinis cheers bud! Think I'll have to get some ordered then 👍
Great video! Perhaps another great option (should y'all be interested) are Gripping Beast miniatures. Make one for Chaos next >:)
Etsy has some stellar models for a good price
Aren’t the warlord minis 28mm and the GW ones 35mm or something? Those scales are really different. Won’t they look like a regiment of pre-teens alongside basketball-players?
The scales are not significantly different! Both are 28mm, but GW's are "heroic" 28mm, meaning that some of the proportions are slightly different. Alone, this difference is really not noticeable. This difference is entirely negated when you kitbash -it just leaves your army looking more unique, not out of scale.
@@VentrueMinis then count me in! I’m off to Perry Miniatures…
I will say that Warlord's and Wargames Atlantic are the ones I'm using. Again, kitbashing will likely make it all work out! But I haven't experience with Perry's, personally.@@LivingroomTV-me9oz
My Dwarf Fillers :)
what is Old World? from what info ive found it was an old game by warhammer, but discontinued for a while until recently upcoming? and it is distinct and different from AoS right? Almost seems like Pike and Shotte fantasy which is cool. if anyone knows where i can learn more about Old world I would love help!
It's the old school Warhammer Fantasy! It got cancelled but had 8 editions. It's different from AOS, it used square bases and is more like a historical rank and flank!
thanks for the reply! that is cool! Great work and ideas, i was looking at Pike and Shotte recently on Warlord Games and knowing ive got a few more game options is fun! have a great day @@VentrueMinis
40mm doesn't equal 4x4 20mm...
If you really want to save $, use Apple Barrel craft paints
There is no way to do Warhammer Fantasy the Old World on a budget except for printing all of your miniatures which would require you to have a 3d printer. Or been around 30 years ago and got most of your miniatures back in the early to mid 1990's like I did.
@@chestersleezer8821 this video literally tells you how that's why I made it
Not everyone needs to play TOW competitively :)
How to make a budget Warhammer army-don't buy Warhammer lololol.
