    The movie is pretty sad. It’s either A the kid is in a coma forever, or B he and his sister are being murdered over and over again by a demon.

    I'm one of those people who loved Skinimarink because it reminded me of my childhood.
    I was an incredibly paranoid kid. I'm not even sure what kickstarted it, but the dark and being alone petrified me. Every night before i would go to sleep I would go around the house and make sure all the windows and doors where locked. If i had to get out of bed as night, I would have to imagine that whatever monster was under my bed was asleep so I could feel safe getting up. Sometimes I just would stay up for hours in bed, just staring into the dark afraid that shutting my eyes would make me vulnerable. This movie was kid me's worst fears come to life.

      @t.l.w.1221 Год назад +13

      Yep, I was and still kinda am the same way. Checked all the rooms, closets, under the bed and made sure everything was shut. When I slept I never faced the wall, because otherwise I was too afraid to turn around and end up face to face with someone. To this day, at the age of 20, I still refuse to sleep with my limbs outside of the bed and always close the bedroom door after myself when I leave to brush my teeth, incase someone decides to enter my room haha Even when I walk to the bathroom or toilet I quickly turn on the lights and when I’m done, run to my bed and under the safety of my covers haha

    Unpopular opinion, but... I really hate the whole coma theory angle. I don't want to say it's too neat, because that's not quite it. But it basically removes the actual horror from the scenario. It doesn't matter how tragic the circumstances of the dream/coma are - it's still taking a bunch of horrific stuff and saying that it didn't actually happen.
    I dunno, I just think that all of these events literally happening is infinitely more disturbing because of the implications of that.

    • @waterwaveybaby
      @waterwaveybaby  Год назад +30

    • @pastellatte2006
      @pastellatte2006 Год назад +6

      I think a coma is plausible for this one, either that or it's about the horrors of losing your child to cancer (specifically brain cancer in this context). I think the things in the movie aren't completely dream made and are rather filtered into a nightmare

    • @biospark4758
      @biospark4758 Год назад +17

      One big hole in the coma theory is how the TV switches off right as the family is returning from bringing Kevin to the hospital. They wouldn’t have left Kaylee there since the mother wasn’t in the picture, so it had to be the entity. There are also scenes purely from Kaylee’s perspective (particularly, the visions of their mother in the parents’ room), which wouldn’t make sense if this was Kevin’s coma dream

    • @elimidd6626
      @elimidd6626 Год назад +3

      Yeah, I enjoy viewing this as the worst fears of a little kid coming to life. This reminds me so much of having insomnia as a child, I was afraid of dying or anything solid, it was abstract fears and the idea *something* was in the dark waiting to get me. From what I've seen that's what this movie captures best, those abstract but very real fears you had as a kid. I'm not a fan of solid theories for this movie simply bc I like it more as an expierence, not as something with an absolute story.

      @katelynna10000 11 месяцев назад +5

      Hi there, I'd like to start off this reply by saying that your opinion is totally valid, but I'd like you to consider that weather the events of the movie "really" happened or not isn't the be all and end all of the horror.
      I've been in a coma, albeit a medically induced one. I spent a full 2 months of my life constantly unsure if I was awake or asleep, never able to trust what my senses seemed to be telling me. I was basically in a constant state of being almost asleep- where the stimuli around you warp in ways that seem completely real in the moment, but are obviously uncanny on reflection. Even if the events of this movie happens entirely "inside the kid's head", and he wakes up after, I can assure you that the experience will leave scars. I haven't seen the full movie, but just watching the clips feels a lot like trying to remember those 'lost' months of my life. Probably because of my experience, I find the thought of the monster being real less scary than the alternative. I know no children haven been locked in their house by a mysterious entity, but this being the frantic workings of a child's mind trying futility to understand what's going on is a viscerally real possibility. Idk, maybe I just needed to trauma dump tonight, and I'm not in any way trying to start a fight, or even saying you're wrong. I just thought I might be able to give a unique perspective on this film.

    When I was a toddler, I was super scared of everything. One day my parents left to go mushroom hunting and were gone longer than they had ever been. I remember my sister calling me to come watch a movie to try to comfort me because I was so afraid they’d never come back.
    I haven’t seen Skinamarink, but just based on the clips I’ve seen, I think it’d feel exactly like that.

    • @bradfin12
      @bradfin12 8 месяцев назад +3

      That kind of what the movie is about. It's about the dread that comes from realizing that your family is what keeps you safe and recognizing your vulnerability for the first time. And the way the story is told is like a half memory of a traumatic experience remembered by someone too innocent to really know what needs to be remembered.

    I'm actually quite reassured that Skinamarink has got a more mixed reception now. There was a patch when everyone seemed to be raving about it and loving it and it made me wonder if we'd watched the same film. Not because I didn't like the film - I think it's great. But it's just about the most niche horror movie I can think of, and I found it really hard to imagine that it'd have that kind of mass appeal.

    I couldn't really relate to the nostalgia aspect of the movie personally, but it definitely terrified me. I would dare say that's the scariest movie I have ever watched. I do agree that it drags a bit, especially in the begining, and at around 20 minutes I was considering dropping it, but I'm glad I didn't.
    I also feel like the viewing experience benifited by me watching it alone in a dark room. The face staring back at me in the end was of course the highlight and I had never felt such horror in my life before.
    One thing I particularly like about this movie is how it messes with you psycologically. Not only do you see thngs that aren't there due to the reasons mentioned in the video, but you also stay in these uncomfortable scenes for so long, that by the point you move to a different shot you wish to go back to the previous scene because, terrifying as it was, it had grown familiar to you.

    I've dealt with sleep paralysis my whole life and while it's fluctuated in frequency (now it's once every week or two, it used to be almost everry night) the fact that I KNOW when I'm stuck in sleep paralysis only makes my imagination go nuts even more...luckily(?) my husband is also used to it, and he knows now when I start moaning in my sleep it means I'm stuck in sleep paralysis again and so he'll lightly whack me awake. He says my moaning sounds like a "bleating goat" though and that it really freaked him out the first time he heard it, and he won't stop teasing me about it even ten years later :nervous laugh:
    tl;dr sleep paralysis sucks

    This movie was the first to genuinely scare me, and really keep me in that fear, in a long time. A lot of horror movies either rely on jumpscares, or dont build an atmosphere that can scare me. However this one actually made it difficult to for me to fall asleep the following night. Most of the fear might have come from the fact that i had stayed up all night, and watched this at like 4am, but it definitely made an impact on me.

This movies reminded me of times when i was alone as a child in the night whilst my dad was still at work. Although i would be in the living room and the kight is on, the fact that the rest of the house was dark terrified me. I watched this movies in broad daylight and it still brought me chills. I don't really get why people say this movie doesn't have a traditional story. That's not really true. The only thing missing from the story is a resolution and it kind of does depending on interpretation of the ending. It has the introdution where we meet the characters then are introduced to the antagonists and his powers as well as the stakes of the movie. We have the rising action where the toilet is taken away, kaylee loses her face, and kevin loses an eye. Then we have the climax where the monster lures kevin into an abyss where he keeps him for two years roughly. Then we have the resolution where Kevin and Kaylee are reunited and kevin asks to watch something happy now. There is a full traditional western story here it's just told unconventionally.
