  • As the term “social construct” becomes mainstream and we learn more about things like gender and sexuality, these categories become more and more accepted in their fluidity. Still, sex (among many others) remains a rigid biological category that dictates our perceptions of each other, while we accept it as natural. In this talk I’m taking you on a journey of self-discovery through the lens of an “abnormal” person and teaching you my go-to method for reclaiming your own body and accepting that there is no normal. Ronja Ziesel is a social worker, queer activist and educator in Innsbruck.
They were born in Regensburg and moved to Innsbruck in 2014, where they got their Bachelor‘s Degree in Social Work at MCI and acted as head of „Diversity and Equality“ at the student organisation ÖH. As their first internship, they participated in the evaluation of a pilot project concerning peer-staffed injections rooms at a queer housing organisation in Vancouver, Canada.
After finishing their Bachelor’s thesis on transgender women in women’s housing in 2020, they went on to participate in the inception of and since work at the NoRa project, where women and families in crisis receive assistance and housing.
They have been a featured speaker at the Q+ You project twice and volunteer as an organizer and counsellor at HOSI Tirol. Both privately and acting as a HOSI Tirol member, they also offer workshops and consulting as well as educational materials on queer inclusion, specifically gender- and sex variance. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Beautifully said! One of the many takeaways from this talk (to me at least) is how inter and trans people are fighting the same fight for bodily autonomy. And I think dismantling the categories of what's "normal" for bodies and gender is a big part of that. It's also something that would benefit everyone, even if they're cisgender and endosex!

MAN or WOMAN? Good isn't bad!

What exactly makes you go thru all this external circus, when being a woman has got to do with an internal state, ie, greater softness, warmth, motherly behavior... all these things you can have by yourself, people don't need to know this very personal thing about you..i am tired of hearing this info from total strangers... all this verbiage is a rabbit hole... you don t need this knew vocabulary ... pay attention to something outside of yourself, this is a dead end. You or thousands of ppl like you will not change standards of beauty. They are thousands of years old. But not to worry, you don t have to meet them, in fact, if you met them today,, in 50 years you would no longer meet them. Why center your life around an illusion, an impermanence... and drive the rest of us crazy in the process with this angst and drama, totally unnecessary

Please see 12:10 , the speaker clearly states that gender is internal. I am assuming that you likely left this heavily irritable comment before finishing the entire video.

Standards of beauty are not "thousands of years old". They are even not the same today, according to the country, the part of the world, the culture, the social group you live in. They change through history, and they will keep changing.
If you are "tired" of hearing about non conforming people, if considering a change in beauty standards is enough to "drive you crazy", then maybe you need to search for help.
For us who happen to someway or another not fit the dominant narrow categories and sterotypes and have no choice in life but to move these boundaries, we're certainly not gonna stop.
