- Last time we talked about milling PCBs on a homemade CNC and you also saw me making one from scratch. This time we take it a bit further! Applying solder mask, at masking your own printed circuit board home, using some UV curable solder mask. Let's see how that goes...

first: what is the material of the roller that you spread the curable mask with it ? is it rubber , metal , wood ?
second : how much time did the curable mask need under the uv light ????

maybe you could paint it flat matte black then laser-burn holes over the pads . before april end i should get a dual-bearings 775 motor a step-down dc-dc converter which can handle the start current peaks (though one of them has a current limit trimmer) the ER11A 5mm shaft extension 9 collets including 1/8" 1/4", and about 20 cheapest endmills. powered by an unregulated psu : big transfo + big diode bridge + big caps. maybe later ill try rs795 or rs895.
The opposite crossed my mind actually! Spreading the mask and uv lasering the whole of the board except the pads...but it has some flaws! Your plans sounds more legit, using the proper material I guess! Sound like the mailman is bringing in some really cool stuff!
If you have a reasonably well leveled CNC you could lightly engrave the soldermask to get reveal the copper again. But it really only works with a fairly well behaved CNC. Picked that up from watching the Wegstr CNC channel videos. Course that thing costs a fair penny en is super precise from the looks of it.
Oh also, you could use HPL or Dibond for your front panels ... I usually do because you can engrave them with labels for your controls. Works great and with dibond you can still keep the aluminum look if you like.
Could work! Setting that up would take some time though! It does have the precision I believe (if you manually level it right). The other day I was test cutting the ram out of an apple's a10 IC (iphone 7) which is soldered and underfilled on top of the CPU. Not knowing exactly how deep I needed to end up, did it in 0.02 mm deep passes, quite a lot of them! It took a fair bit of time, but worked really well! I think I'll make a vid on that once I get me some proper endmills for the job!
Will definitely dig into the HPL, dibond stuff.

@@ZepLabs well I suppose that is part of the reason behind the engraving bit being clamped in the drill in a springloaded fashion. So it would be able to compensate for slight differences in leveling. Of course it would only work well with something like solder mask as it is easy to 'scratch off'.
@@xConundrumx could be! I think the westgr machine uses a 9 ponit leveling routine though..Pretty clever, and it gives some very nice results, but ridiculously overpriced for my taste😁
@@ZepLabs no argument there. It was half the price a few months ago and I was planning on getting one at a later date. But then it went up so now I am instead making a semi heavy duty custom CNC machine (for a self built machine anyways). Well gradually anyways. Have a smaller one right now from literally scraps of aluminum tubing and such which works fairly well but I want to do the occasional aluminum part too.

Maybe it is possible to let dry the surface of the laquer just a little so the mask doesn't stick to it, then put the mask on and let it dry completely, I would lie if I would say I did, but I'm pretty sure I read this once somewhere

Putting two layers of the document on top of each other is unnecessary and reduces sharpness. it is better to paint the printed shape with a marker on the whiteboard. For example, I described the procedure here www.cobra-team.cz/index.php?str=clanek&ic=25
