Hey Zep, actually you can get an all in one GRBL board which allows TMC drivers or 1/32 microstepping (vs 1:16 for the CNC shield). The all in one board is laser/spindle control ready. The overall price tag is lower than an Arduino+Shield. Of course, you can still use external drivers. The software procedure is similar to arduino (actually a part of the board is an arduino mega clone). Search for Keyestudio CNC GRBL V0.9 (there's other brands that proposes similar boards too, some you can add a touchscreen : MKS DLC 2.0 for example).
There are a few bugs behind the v0.9 though so you can get a good mid ground resolution behind the drivers without the issues
Love your videos and sense of humor. I had a 3018 cnc i ran it on easel. Would your upgrade work with easel because I prefer to use easel for my projects

great job and great video and most importantly great to have you back. but there is a question kept bugging my mind why didn't you use the stepper drivers that was in the control box?because parallel port pins go directly to the control signals of the drivers or through an opto - coupler so I thought you would just wire the arduino pins to their matching pins of the parallel port.or correct me if I missed something in the video 😅
