Just the overall vibe. The jangly low tuned guitar, her deep voice. I think it's very remeniscent of Polly's early work.
Love the reverent nod to Shirley Bassey in the vocal phrasing here. AC is never going to be mainstream and that's just fine with her and her legions of fans across the world me included. Sing it sister.
you should see her live! she is soooo powerful, you stand on the ground and watch with your neck craned upwards as she strums her guitar, blasting your ears with all the power of a jet engine. that and she is always immaculately presented! its just awe-inspiring!
the point is that calvi is original. she has the talent to mimic not just adele, but a wide array of stylings including winehouse, garbage, even annie lennox. i say she is the best female performer since annie lennox. she states as her influences the likes of ennio morricone. and her trio is intuitive as hell and just as good live as they are in some studio mix. that's more than you can say for any one of the other divas out there today.

Artists like PJ Harvey, etc. paved the way for artists like Anna Calvi and I don't think it's too far-fetched or insulting to say that they have a similarity. I hear it too, and I think her voice has a similar quality in this song anyway. The fact that everyone hears a little something different in her music is just because she's a unique talent and not a carbon copy. People shouldn't poo-pooh the contributions of other women in rock--it took a long time for us to be taken seriously!
Every now and then an artist emerges onto the music scene and completely blows you away... There's something about this girl that is thrilling! Absolutely love this track. Peace & Love Anna Calvi you bloody enchantress. x

First time I heard Anna Calvi (and her amazing band) was at Green Man (UK) this year. I was sat right at the back of the terraces in the main arena, and her big-sounding guitar coupled with the size of the main stage area was incredible, hearing it ring around the valley in the Black Mountains. Won't be forgetting that any time soon, if you get the chance to see her live, go!

I won a pair of tix to see her @Schubas in Chicago, either way I was set on going to see her. It is small and quaint but she sounded so lovely there. I really hope she makes it back to the states sometime this year. I love her so!

Maybe you're right. I guess they have the same audience. I'm a huge Polly- and Calvi-fan and from reading thousands of interviews you can tell that they are both tired of getting compared to other musicians that have no similarities with them, just because they are female artists. I don't think that Polly reminds of Calvi at all. Both their work are absolutely brilliant

This was one of the first Anna Calvi songs I heard and it remains one of my absolute favorites. Her voice and that Telecaster... Plus the simplistic and perfect drums. And that... well, what is that harmonica type thing called :D

She's so enticing and alluring.. Just such an interesting artist. When she performs I find her quite scary (in a good way if that makes sense), but when I see her interviewed she's so quiet and reserved. Shy even. My brain doesn't know what to do! She's just brilliant. I didn't even mention the fact her singing voice is unbelievable and she's a great guitar player... A breath of fresh air indeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed. :)

@khalilsajadi It's My Winnipeg, I saw the movie a week ago, and I think it was kind of a root for her writting/composing process, but in my peronal opinion I wouldn't say it is totally realated to the movie. Maybe it's just the desire for something (a relationship, maybe)/someone that doesn't exist anymore

Actually she does remind me a lot of PJ Harvey... that's one of the things that made me notice Anna Calvi. They both have this dark sound, beautiful music with noisy elements. Their voices aren't similar, but the musical sensibilities are. Like I wouldn't compare Anna Calvi to Amanda Palmer, or Annie Clark, Fiona Apple, Regina Spektor or Merrill Garbus.... That would be just picking women's names out of a hat. A Polly Harvey comparison is relevant though, no? Anyway, her work is brilliant.
