Great HOA video Jen! One other thing to look out for are HOA communites that have active or pending lawsuits. They should inform potential buyers of lawsuits on closing docs that can lead to special assessments if they are found liable. Would love to someday see a condo specific coa/hoa vid too!
I think the way you can protect yourself is to read what you are signing when you close on the house and pay the fees. People want the "protection" of HOA but then when it comes down to actually following the rules and paying the dues they pretend they had NO IDEA what the paper they were signing actually meant. They know!
@@vistabadboi Did you watch the video? The ladie clearly stated that she was unaware that her house was part of the HOA and the she never received any notice from them. And the other gentle man set up an automatic payment while he was off serving his country and they knew that he was on deployment but chose not to informe him oversease that payment had stop. If that's not a steal people house on a techinicality scam, I don't know what is.
Makes sense to me that the debt to the HOA takes priority over the mortgage. Its a debt that was incurred while someone is living there. Its similar to if someone had work done on the home and never paid the contractor. They owe the money on the current condition of the home. They shouldn't be able to collect the money to pay off the mortgage until all other debts on the home are collected.
As much as I hate to say this sometimes HOA's are necessary. However there are some HOA"s that get some power and abuse it. The abusers get a lot of attention.
True. However, even when they do issues still arise because many docs violate state and federal law. In addition, in too many cases the docs aren't actually followed by board so even if you read them, you are blindsided still with malice or incompetence. That being stated, it is always best to read and ask for documents.
@@ChessCat9 hmmm, she gave 2 examples 1. A Deployed man who made arrangements with HOA that was not followed through or acknowledged. 2. A woman who was not informed that she was responsible for fees or informed of foreclosure or given opportunity to remedy. So it would seem that both of these folks would have paid if not for the incompetence, and perhaps unscrupulous intentions, of the HOA.
@@christinem979 Ignorance in both cases is not a good excuse. THEIR ignorance imposes additional costs on their neighbors. If you are too incapable - you can't own a house. It is the same with a job or a relationship, if you can't handle it - you will fail, nothing in this life is a sure thing.
As a Millennial the simple fact a house is in an HOA is a RED FLAG. I have no intention in Paying a Second Mortgage in the form of Fees

no HOA for me never
There are no good HOA's.......
I love my HOA. I refuse to live with nasty, lazy or loud neighbors.
Just one more reason, not to live where there is an HOA. Every time I think I know all the reasons and another one pops up.
When you buy the home you know the rules. get over it !!
@@vistabadboi You sound like someone who is in the business of stealing other people home.
@@cross75man75 when you buy the property you agree to the rules @!

"Someone" wants those homes, and if the foreclosure succeeds, he/she can get it for the peanuts

I don’t get why some people expect to keep expensive things without paying the cost.
And there is the issue, people do not read the docs!

@K.MichaelShepherd then the board needs to be held to task! Remind them of what they can and can not do for petey sakes.
Totally misleading video. Why should neighbors pay for somebody who does not pay their dues? Jen, get off your high horse and get real!
