What comes next are the most beautiful guitar tones you'll ever hear. Bring on Book II.
Exactly. Some of Lerxst's finest work is to follow. You won't be disappointed.
@@F1Filter I Finally got that sound using a combination of Ibanez flanger, Ibanez Tube Screamer, Washburn Compressor and JHS Digital delay!
I do love " crossing the bridge of death" but it's way too short.
Can’t wait for book 2 Hemispheres! You’re going to think, what the heck has this got to do with book 1, takes a while before you get what’s going on. 😁
Hemispheres is going to blow you away.
Period.
If you think THIS was mind blowing wait Book two is insane, I saw them do this song many times but listening to Book two is a MASTERPIECE.
Rush tunes like Bytor & The Snowdog, The Necromancer, 2112 and Cygnus X-1 are "otherworldly". They take you to other worlds, other dimensions, other states of consciousness.
When I first heard these songs back in the 70's, I was sure that Alex, Geddy and Neil were mystical beings who held the secrets to the universe!
Agree! Have a few drinks or Hit the train to Bangkok for extra feels. 🤪😂😂. You will be in another universe!!
That's a pretty good description ! It's like they were on a whole other wavelength and i remember thinking " How the hell do they come up with this greatness". Lol
Wow! I was just telling somebody that those exact songs are my favorites by Rush. I'll only add Freewill and Working Man to this list (though those songs don't have the same epic tale thing happening).
The only other time Geddy screams like that is in “No One At The Bridge” -
“Scream out desperation but
No one cares to hear”
First my favorite part of the song is Set a course Just east of Lyra, only because Lyra is my first name, so Geddys shout out feels good. Lol. Overall, I think enjoy book II more, simply because the lyrics are just beyond beautiful. To me, it's one of Neil's masterpieces. Just reading the lyrics moves me beyond words. Glad you enjoyed! I skipped your part one so now i have to go watch your reaction. Lol
Hemispheres is my favorite RUSH album, but Natural Science is by far my favorite RUSH song. Those lyrics…
Just east of the constellation Lyra, northwest of Pegasus, is the constellation Cygnus. The first detected black hole is in Cygnus; when first detected, astronomers weren't certain what it was, hence the name "Cygnus X-1". Turns out it precisely fits Einstein's prediction of a gravitational singularity in the Theory of General Relativity. We've found more since, but you never forget your first, right?
@@DeaconBlues117 Never forget my first shout out in a song lol
Love LV !!!! :) ♥
Imagine being an 18 year old girl in the midst of Navy boot camp in 1977 and seeing this album (cassette) in the base store. Like you, Tim, "2112" changed my life.
Now, let us also remember that 'A Farewell to Kings' was the album released the year after '2112' when the sales gained Rush their creative freedom. And THIS is the album that follows it!!
Tim!! I can't wait until you delve into the NEXT Rush album, 'Hemispheres' (which is my personal favorite)! Side A will continue to blow your mind!! And then the 3 songs on Side B?!? ✌
I'm with you Justine, following 2112 with this strange direction, you'd wonder whether the record company must have thought here we go again as IMO it's more complex and is a strange collection of songs compared to its predecessor.
Something about Rush girls, 👧 , so down to earth and easy to talk too!!🎙🥁🪘🎸🎶🎵👍🥰. You are a rare find to bond at this at 18!!
@@batman1169 I bonded with Rush in 1975 from the first notes of "Anthem" on my 8-track tape of 'Fly By Night!' 😉✌
As awesome as Farewell To Kings is, Hemispheres just might be a tad greater imo. It doesn't get any better than this
They did release their first live album between 2112 and A Farewell to Kings. That happened to be the first Rush album I bought. A friend had played their copy so I could hear Peart’s drum solo. Naturally I could not wait for AFTK and it blew me away, this piece of musical art in particular. (I hesitate referring to it as a song.) Hemispheres (and La Villa Strangiato especially) was the glue that put me back together and Rush was from then on my favorite band. No one else ever earned their crown.
These Rush reactions of yours and watching your journey with the greatest band of all time is my favorite thing on RUclips! This is MY Christmas morning every time you post one. I check every day. Everyone else is right....Hemispheres will blow your mind. Get your golf in (absolutely!) and head back to part 2 soon. We'll be here.
Listen to it again, just before you do Hemispheres
And Hemispheres is so amazing and solid, there are no words. I believe it's a tad better overall than Farewell To Kings, which is no easy feat. Geddy and the boys are musical geniuses. As far as Canadian bands go, i really appreciated April Wine's rock 'n' roll power but Rush is just in a different universe, so grandiose and technically awesome
in the future you will be changing your mind multiple times saying...THIS IS MY FAVOURITE RUSH SONG....it just gets better after this.
"What the hell was that!" Those are the exact words I shouted after listening to this song some 40 odd years ago. This song has everything you could want in a song: slow building intro, hard punch to the face. great lyrics, and insane musicianship. This is a rollercoaster ride from start to finish! Your reaction said it all! Can't wait for BOOK II, which to me is more like a Prequel than a sequel to this. Thanks Tim!!☮☮☮
I remember being mindblown when i first heard it. It's ominous, powerful, progressive and unlike anything i ever heard before, especially coming from early Genesis and Yes albums. So unique-sounding and musically superior, i couldn't believe how Rush took it to the next level. Amazing how much pure musicianship can be produced by just 3 guys
Many thanks to Producer Terry Brown for his excellent audio. The next album Cygnus X-1 Book 2 Hemispheres is my favorite Rush album looking forward to your reaction. Great bands like Rush use dynamics unlike today's music. I was in a Rush Tribute band, its hard work you must practice the song over and over until it memorized. You can't count and play RUSH you just have to know it.
and this one, the bass in the intro. i could say things like this about most of their stuff lol.
i love the arrangements. the changes, the build-ups...
Your mom is very wise. Cygnus X-1 deserves its own video. My heart has a very fond place in it for all the songs on this album. The first time I ever saw Rush was this tour. I had never even heard of them before, and there I was, stoned and hearing all of this for the first time... live. I became a lifelong fan at that moment, and this song is part of why.
The best things in life are often without words to describe. Rush is one of those great things!!!!!
That song has the highest notes ever sung by Geddy Lee. (Specifically the last line “every nerve is torn apart”)
Used to fall asleep to this record and that part would wake my ass right up every time. LMAO!
"sea unending" may be the highest I've ever heard him sing, he screams it
@@youtoo2233 ... maybe "scream out desperation but noone cares to hear?" If not, well, I love the way he sings that on Caress of Steel anyway.
Book 2 will blow you away.
Dude!!! Your reactions let me in tears! I don't know why, but keep it up. It's amazing
I remember finding this album in my school music library back in 1979, by accident...got in a lot of trouble that week, wouldnt leave library for classs, was busy changing my life , didnt have time for books, this song STILL impacts me, cant forget the memory of this concert in Alpine Valley, WI , in 1979. made me who I am today
I heard this in 1978 as a 15 year old and i remember the experience to this day. You just helped me relive the moment.
Thank you.
Dude, I've been a Rush fan since the 1970s. This is one of my top three favorite Rush songs. It definitely is their most pounding, hard rock song. It might be my favorite. Rush is the best band to ever come out of the Western Hemisphere. Nothing wrong, after you listen to every Rush song, with saying that this is their best song! Great review!! Great reaction!!
They put you in another realm... The journey that take you on with the music and the and the time signatures go beyond your mind's eye 👁️. Alex's guitar playing alone has so much feeling depth it is like his soul is crying, no other guitar player reaches me like he does 🎸🤯💯🤘
"I quit". Please don't quit! You gotta hear Book 2!! I'm psyched to see you experience that WORLD of music!
Next song and whole album are peak Rush. There last full out technical album. You should read the story of the Cygnus songs it will make it more enjoyable if you know it like 2112 with the graphic novel.
Nice reaction. I can understand why you're speechless. If I was stranded on an island with only one album to listen to, it would be "A Farewell to Kings." It is by far the most dynamic album Rush ever produced. Even though my favorite songs are on "Permanent Waves" and their musicianship is unmatched in "Hemispheres," this album simply takes me in so many different directions. As a drummer myself, I really appreciate the way Neil worked all the percussion into Xanadu and it didn't sound overbearing. Then to cap off the album with a Sci-Fi song about a black hole that was not proven to exist until 3 year after the album release made me realize that Rush was so far ahead of their time. Hell, the title track could even apply to current events lyrically. I appreciate your reactions and I encourage you to continue on your journey. There are still several amazing tracks to look forward to.
Great reaction. I actually like Book II better than Book I .. it's a matter of opinion. The guitar tone on Hemispheres may be the best of Alex's career.
I prefer the story of Book 2 (partial to Myths), but the music of Book 1 ... OMG!!
Words are not enough when it comes to describe feelings and this song is pure feelings. You´re not the only one reacting to it like you just did. I did so myself many years ago.
Oh man, now it begins!!! Hold on tight because it just gets better!!
😁🇨🇦
Book 2 will be your new favourite.
Since Fly By Night, all lyrics were in the album jacket. I had LP copy of all albums from first to Hold Your Fire. My favorite Rush song is all of them!
It’s my favourite Rush song. They have so many sublime songs. But this song is musically conceptual to the story in the lyrics. You can picture the whole tale play out from the spaceship launch and journey across the galaxy to the approach to the black hole, and finally falling into it and then… what happens next…?
It’s such a brilliant piece of work and so intense at times and suspenseful at times.
Geddy's vocals on this song were insane! The whole song is amazing and I am looking forward to book 2 as I like it even more than this one. Hemispheres is at the top of the list for me. Cheers
I remember where I was when I heard this, just like I remember where I was when I first heard "YYZ" from Exit Stage Left and discovered the wonders and singular excellence of this band. I came backward to 2112, and I liked it, but I think that A Farewell to Kings, Hemispheres, Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures and Signals was Rush at its creative, compositional, and performative apotheosis. I have truly enjoyed all of what came next all the way to Clockwork Angels, but I have gone back to this period and this music again, and again, and again.
There is a mysteriousness and insanity to this song. The guitar at 8:30 is horror movie scary and yet also conveys the loneliness of space...the moment you realize you are trapped in the gravity well...PERFECT. And then the CLEAN guitar at 11:00 after Geddy just WAILS conveys musically crossing the event horizon into a black hole and what might lay beyond?
Cygnus, 2112 and Xanadu are all epic tracks and are truly some of my favorites. That being said… I can’t wait to to see you experience “The Garden” it is the last track from their last album and is the perfect swan song to an amazing career. I had a mentor and dear friend that passed from ALS the very day that I first heard this song and it still makes me think of him each time I hear it. I know you don’t normally do the video versions of their music, but I think you’ll find the live version to be awe inspiring.
So, I'm going to join so many of your other commenters on here and say that I love this song, but I like Book II even better. The two songs combined make for just an amazing, epic tale that I personally like better than 2112. I think they take the music up a notch or two in Book II. Can't wait for your reaction to the song Hemispheres.
Rush is a incredible journey never get tired of these music God's 🎶
The great moments and memories with this band are countless. I’ve been very fortunate and have seen them 17 times…(Got the ticket stubs to prove it). They are also a “go to” when I need a really good belly laugh. I bet I’ve watched Lerxt’s RRHOF speech…(blah blah) 1000 times! It never fails to get me rolling in the floor! Dude could’ve been a great standup comic.😂🤣🤣🤟✌️
OLR, I don’t think I’m alone in saying we are enjoying sharing this journey with you. It is a really BIG challenge and so too will be the reward! Looking forward to your next drop. Stay steady friend!
Loving this Rush journey with you & the Cygnus reaction was awesome.
I've been a Rush fan from the very beginning, seeing them for the 1st time in their very 1st concert in the U.S. with Neil Peart. Opening up for Uriah Heep & Manfred Mann's Earth Band in Pittsburgh.
I don't know if you have the lyrics or not there, but when I listen to Cygnus for the 1st time & your reading the lyrics going on this journey through space with them & at the end of the lyrics it says to be continued...
Wow, you talk about your mind being blown away as a teenager. And then they continued on the next album to do it again.
Really enjoy your journey, besides the Beatles, Rush has always been my favorite band & seen them Everytime they came to Pittsburgh. Looking forward to the future videos.
As far as my favorite Rush song. It happens to be on their very last studio album.
The Garden, such a beautiful song & just means so much more since Neil Peart's passing.
Hey Tim, I'm late on part 2, What came before has led you to that very moment... finish what you started, absolutely one of the best reations I've ever seen
This album introduced me to Rush at the age of 11. I still get chills every time I listen to it. Top 10 Rush songs of all time in my opinion. Stay tuned for more thinking about how can they keep getting better. Cheers.
I was lucky enough to see them play this on the 'Hemispheres' tour.
Dude! You had me when you said you were going to do it all!
I would definitely listen to Book 1 again right before listening to Book 2 for the first time.
Experience the epic drama in its entirety!
To see your face on this ine reminds me of how I must've looked hearing it for tge first time on headphones back in the day. This made me smile.
Can’t wait to see you reacting to Hemispheres.
Not a crazy statement for this to be your favorite. This is one of my favorites as well. I love sci fi and music and this is just a masterful and fantastic story/song/mindmovie.
Geddy's vocal at the end is perfect! He's being torn apart by a frickin black hole!
Exactly! This is top tier Rush. I like all of their catalogue, but 2112 through Moving Pictures is sublime.
Like everything to do with the music of RUSH you must listen to the live version preferentially over anything from the studio. Remember, RUSH is a dish best served live.
“Feel like a kid at Christmas”…”So blown away right now”…”I have no more words…” Yeah, I’d say you got it. That’s the reaction I remember having to it in 1977. That was also the year I first got my drivers license so it was a time full of those kinds of experiences.
Thanks, Valerie! She’ll know what I mean. Don’t worry.
Before I heard this song I Already listened to metallica master of puppets . But this song made me realise what heavy music mean. And in the best possible way. This song opened my eyes
I keep checking back for Cygnus book 2 - can't wait!!!!
So glad you love this song. It's my 3rd favorite Rush song. Not many people have it that high on their list despite their love for it. I felt like you when I first heard it.
"every nerve is torn apart!"... and then a heart beat.
Wow! Wait until you hear Book 2. You just might explode.
as impressed as you are with this song, imagine this being released in 1977 and adolescent minds exploding all over the place !!!! Geddy hits notes that only dogs could hear !!!!
RUSH … Priceless!!!
Back in the day, "chimpmunks on speed" was the term used by the media, pre meth days. Thank you for sharing your reaction. Listen again and note the lyrics and how alex especially conveys not only the story but also brings the emotions of the characters to us. Masters of the masterpiece.
Your mom was 100% correct
Amazing reaction. I love this song as well.
Something you said at the end of the previous video that 2112 changed your life but Cygnus X1 was your favorite track. I agree with everything you said. I am a 54 year old Rush fan who loves the 2112 album in the highest regard. Cygnus X1 is my favorite track period.👍🔥🤘🏻🎧
Eagerly awaiting your reaction to Cygnus X-1 Book II Hemispheres🤞☺️
I think the beauty of Rush is that I got a new favourite song of theirs pretty much with each album as they came out 😉 As such do not be surprised if you change your mind a few more times along the way. Probably best to just try and pin down a favourite from each album, but sometimes even that's impossible 🤣 Great to see your reactions to these though - takes me back for sure 😎👍
Ending Working Man in Cleveland with the opening lick of CX1B1 is the most impressive mic drop/fuck you ever. It's so good, you'll back it up and watch it again. Thanks, great review.
You should’ve been there January 2 rd 1978 at the Morris Civic in South Bend Indiana.
They came out with dueling double necks to play this. I still can see and hear it today
Hey Tim, I watched X-1 Book I for the second time. Trying to psych myself up for Book II. It’s been two weeks….ready for the next installment…hint, hint 😁
Hi bud. Thank god for mums, and great you listened to her. Experience is the key.
Your reaction was priceless. It's funny that your mom was ahead of you on this song.
The next album will do it to you again. It’s even better
Dude wait until you hear book 2, Hemispheres. Book 1 is him falling into the black hole. Book 2 is what happens after.
Your mom has a lot of cred in my book. Impressive!
This has always been my favourite RUSH tune. Incredible piece
Alex Lifeson is one of the best guitarists ever. As a guitar player, this band has always inspired me.
This is a story of the journey of a lifetime.
Great reaction! Perfect statement: "like a kid on Christmas"! This was my first Rush album that I really connected with (ATWAS went over my head and I wasn't ready) and my first time hearing Cygnus X-1 was revelatory! Totally blew doors of perception, my brother! I'm so glad you dove into that pool of genius! Wait...but wait!...until you hear BOOK 2, Hemispheres!! Epic!
I agree it's hard to find the words to describe a Rush song like this.
You did raise the question of what would drive this type of creativity.
I believe there was a certain defiance against the mainstream and bold individuality that is the underlying theme of every Rush song since Neil Peart joined the band.
If there is a political message in a song, the professor points out the stark difference between living in a free society versus conforming to societal norms as subjects under a dictatorship.
This song is one of the last epic adventures. Later his words are more in depth and tied together in individual songs in an album theme.
After you do the Hemispheres album, you might want to throw in a "bonus" live album from the 1978 tour, from Tucson '78. It's a soundboard bootleg, unofficial. But it's the best capture of the Hemispheres tour, and the only way you'll hear both books of Cygnus played live back to back in their entirety. The rest of the setlist is a wishlist of all their best stuff up through Hemispheres too, almost.
There is a book 2 on the next album. Can't wait to see you react to that.
cygnus x-1 book 2 will blow your mind...... your next favorite RUSH song is coming up....enjoy!!!!
I was energized and like a little kid watching your reaction! Made my morning!
It certainly makes sense that a song like this and other epic Rush tunes can leave you without words, especially after a single listen. I wonder if you might enjoy playing the song again on your Part 2s, but pause the music along the way to make observations, give analysis and share what the music is doing to you. You can go back over a section as needed. Not an original idea, but one that might relieve some of the pressure of offering your first impressions on a song that is a literal journey that your brain hasn't finished processing!
By the way, I first heard this album on 8-track, where Xanadu, Closer to the Heart and Cygnus X-1 were interrupted by the switching of tracks. The song would fade out, click to next track, then fade back in. Yes, I'm old.
I feel you. LOL... I love it. Bring on Hemispherrrrrres!
Book I & Book II show the advancement in tone and production grown out of 2112. Can’t wait for you to review their first instrumental. La Villa (last track on Hemispheres) is a exercise in self indulgence!!!!
He's already done a video on La Villa Strangiato as well as YYZ and songs from Permanent Waves and Signals.
Now you can understand your parents. It's not possible to have a favorite RUSH tune, top 10? Maybe. Thanks for all your vids, love it.
Hearing a younger guitarist reacting to these tracks is enjoyable. Not that RUSH needs justification, but, at this time, the following (the Fans) was obviously, less. back in the late seventies-early eighties, this WAS Rock. Zeppelin, The Who, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, Van Halen and MANY others were just the norm. It was hard to discern the quality, only that RUSH was FAR more technical, in their composition!! Something called Progressive Rock was somewhat new(at least for a young man I was). I was drawn, to this band more than others because, of it. If RUSH stayed this Rocking, Progressive Path, they would be my favorite. 1983ish they changed, to fit the times. Looking back I understood they probably could NOT continue this trajectory, of just MAD skills. SO difficult to duplicate to live audiences, SO exhausting. Hemispheres another CLASSIC!! Suggestion: Play this song right before playing it's second Part(Cygnus X-01 Part II)!! Enjoy!!
Hemispheres is the perfect follow-up imo. More insane musicianship and the flow of the songs is almost unmatched. Another masterpiece among many. Reminds me of Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon and Wish You Were Here albums, so brilliant and then releasing Animals which was another instant masterpiece, so unique-sounding. It's kinda mind blowing how these great bands can produce a string of awesome albums, one after the other. Just brilliant !
🤣 Rush turned you in to a Berlin song ... 🤫" No more words! No more words!..." 😂🤣😂🐰
Oh, how wonderful is the discovery of Rush!? 🤘 What are you going to do when the progressive stuff tapers off? I personally think there is something mind blowing on every album...but that's me 😄 I hope it will be you as well. 👍
As a fan since 1975, I was excited for each and every successive album! ✌❤
@@justineapril7922 I'm ashamed to say, despite my cousin trying to convince me of Rush's greatness back then, I didn't realize it myself until Hold Your Fire 🤦🏻♂️ After that, though, Rush is my number one! 🤘😂 I had the privilege of being at their last concert in LA @ The Forum...where I saw my 1st concert. Talk about full circle 😛😭
@@jonathanspahn7308 I wish I could've been at the Forum for the last concert, but I was poor. I did have a small chance to see them in Tampa, but it's a 4 hour drive each way. Foolish mistake....
It's all history, and today it is repeating itself.
Tim, if your momma tells you to do CYGNUS X1 - Book 1 as a reaction by itself, you do Cygnus X1- Book 1 as it’s own reaction!!!
And your going to love hemispheres way more
your mom & dad have a great ear for the best of the best !!!
Rush will do that to you.
I can think of a number of songs in your future that may hit you hard again.....
I'm interested in what you think about the song circumstances coming up on hemispheres. its my favorite Rush song when it is my favorite Rush song.....
for a long time, they wouldnt play it anymore in concert...think it may have been too intense for the type of shows they were trying to present, kinda dark, difficult to parody, they like parody in concert, a black hole death for a space traveleer isnt typical of there light heartedness; but when they caved in to requests and started playing live again, it was killer
Subscribed based on this review.
Fearless is right I think. The song it’s better when you think about this as a story and what the different parts are describing and how perfectly they fit… Right down to Alex’s guitar solo which sounds like radioactivity blasting out of the black hole
🤩 That 🎸 tone is very unique & cool! Alex is a freaking genius! 😁🐰
I was 15 the first time I heard this song. At this point in my life I was forever done with Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Kiss, (Kiss I had been listening to since I was 12). I was a kid reading tons of science fiction and science fact. I poured over Isaac Asimov books by the hundreds. So when I heard this song I was s blown away I wore out the album and bought a second copy,. It is my opinion that this song formed the back-drop and tone lines for what would become modern heavy metal or second wave heavy metal, Deep Purple creating the first wave. . I am, what some would say, a Rush fanatic, so I know what I say is biased. But I think Rush always defines and or captures in spirit of the music that surrounds them. There is no song that equals this song. Achilles Last Stand by Led Zeppelin is the only thing that comes slightly close.
The first Rush albums I heard were 2112 to Moving Pictures
Can’t wait for Book II. My favorite Rush song of all time! 😎
Hemispheres only has 4 songs.... But hold on tightly bro!!!!! I agree that Alex just kills on that record. Hemispheres also closes the ''Old Rush'' chapter. After that comes my favourite era. Production wise, the next 7 albums following Hemispheres are the sweet spot for me. The became the world's smallest orchestra in that era. Can't wait!!!!!!
That tone!!! 😆😆😆
