- How to replace a contactor on an AC condenser unit. In this video I show and explain how to change out an air conditioner contactor. I replace a single pole contactor with a double pole contactor. I talk about all the safety precautions, what the amp rating should be, whether you should get a one pole or a two pole contactor, which side the power wires need to go on, and other tips involved with replacing a contactor.

I decided to replace both my capacitor and 2 pole contactor as maintenance items after watching Jay's video. Upon inspecting the old contactor, I found all 4 contact points to be heavily pitted. It was on the road to failure, for sure. The contactor cost me around $15 on Amazon. The a/c repair folks charge in excess of $300. Cant say enough good things about Jay's videos. Thanks so much
Thank you so much!! I'm 61 year old female and was replacing a contactor to an older Trane AC. The connectors were like the ones in this video, some were female connectors and some were rounded connectors. You saved me time of not having to change the round connector ends. I was going to go buy female connectors and switch them out.
Original problem was outside fan was coming on but not compressor. I had AC repair come out yesterday and said I had a bad capacitor and contactor. He wanted to charge me $275 to replace a $9 capacitor and $309 to replace $26 contactor. I paid him the $75 diagnostic fee and told him I would do it myself and I did thanks to your videos.
Hopefully you didn’t get hurt or ruin your machine. Seen so many homeowner destroy their compressor or harm themselves. We are trained professionals for a reason.
@@marcusfitzgerald59your inflated fees are driving the diy community to watch RUclips videos and get up off the couch to save $$$$. All this job was only part swapping, standard A/C maintenance. I’ve had A/C techs come to my house and misdiagnose a problem to my A/C.

Great explanation of what to do and why. You anticipated my questions on contactor compatibility, 1 vs 2 pole, and how to adapt leads for contactor.
Your videos are helping the diy community to grow. This is just part swapping and standard maintenance to an A/C. I’ve had A/C techs come to my house and miss diagnose a problem. The tech told me the problem was an $850 compressor when the real problem was a $150 expansion valve problem. A/C techs inflated fees are helping our diy community to finally get up off the couch.

I have 410a and the liquid line temp was over 140 f and the red gauge read 102f
The system was low in 410a and I put 3lbs that dropped the temp on the low side pipe from 210f to 140 but like I said it's still high and result in negative subcooling value!
The low side is reading 40f on gauge and the temp prop on the low side read 68f
So the high side pressure is about 345psi and the low side is about 145psi based on the guages reading
The outside temp was 74f afternoon
The system is roof mount train

Jay, you are the man! Your excellent tutorials told me everything I needed to know and the courage to replace my 15 year old capacitor and contactor that a service repairman said, during a routine PM, were close to failure. As in your video, my screw over connectors had to be crimped, but unlike yours, this was no easy task. I discovered that cutting open the ring with wire cutters and then crimping it, worked like a charm. Just a little idea you might want to pass along.
Once again you saved me time and money. At first, contactor was full of dead bugs. After blowing and cleaning, it still did not work. Decided to replace it - easier than I thought thanks to your video. And voila! Thanks.
Man, you are a Professor of all things instructional concerning home cooling and heating...thank you for sharing the elite wisdom God has given you to help so many of us out here in cyber land.y issue was that at times, my condenser unit would keep running after the AC would cycle off in the house. I would go outside and see the line from the unit to the house frozen... problem was the contactor sticking (which a slap on the side would loosen)... but now is fixed... with the new contactor for $23.86 and guidence from you!😊

I have a two 20 year old AC units and have started replacing the capacitors and contactors.
The slide on connectors for the capacitors were very dull looking. I grabbed them with a needle nose and polished them up with a slim brass brush. I would recommend this easy step to insure the best connection. Also like your idea to crimp them down a little if loose.
Great instructional video! Been in a heatwave here in the northeast and Wed evening the AC unit was just just blowing hot air from the inside air handler. Went outside and the manganic connector was fried (27yrs old) Replaced that and figured I'd do the coil at the same time as that even though it was still good (at the 27 years old also, it just mad sense to do both.) Also take lots of photos for the wiring for reference as each unit is different and even jot down a few notes. Made the installs trouble-free. Both parts from Grainer came to $85.

Thank you for the great videos, I've watched several, our heat pump has been running on emergency heat for a couple of weeks (propane) I discovered the single pole contactor had burned up one of the contacts, it's 10 years old, I ordered another on internet $12, should have it in a couple of days 👍

Buy a spare one of these and keep them on hand. $15 part and easily replaced. Same goes for capacitor. I had my AC go out late in the afternoon and could not buy a contactor. Had to hard wire where contactor goes and use the main breaker by the condenser to use the AC. Worked great for that night. Make sure the thermostat is on so the fan runs while compressor is on. Next morning got the part and changed it out. Great video. Thanks

You are awesome brother! I wish all HVAC techs were as knowledgable and thorough as you. Most techs are rude and selfish. In my experience, most HVAC techs don't know how to teach you or have the patience to teach you. You should really consider being an instructor brother. You have the temperament to do it.

This video and a few of the others you had helped me solve my AC issue. Started off thinking it was the thermostat, after blowing several fuses, slowly rulled out each link in the chain. Turns out my contactor when testing only gave 1.2 ohms when testing it. I just got the part today and installed it! AC is working as it should!

I just watched your video on contactors single or double pole and replacing a single with a double pole contactor and checking if a CCH is there, I think the tech should check the schematic before changing 2 reasons at this point CCH can be connected to L1 and L2 with a hi temp thermostat on discharge line to stop heater and important the K2 defrost relay BK wire placement on the contactor....

THANK YOU SO MUCH! I have to DIM (Do It Myself) as I am a single, private school teacher. I just replaced my contactor today and before I POWER ON, I wanted to be sure I got it right, so I watched one more video - this one. I also sent pics to my Uncle - an electrician to have him inspect it. I had an 8 wire, that I had to clip and strip the 1998 clamps off and insert. Thanks for the old/new pic as yes, the smaller coil wires are on opposite sides and you helped me look on the bottom to understand how they are attached to the coil. It is June 28, 2020 - in TEXAS - thank God it has been overcast and cool these past several days since I ordered my contactor 1-pole 30amp 24v. So I will now power on as I place my trust in God the ultimate technician who has helped me learn. My older contactor lasted 22 years!!!! Wow! It was sticking last fall prior to winter, so again, sticking in beginning of June, needed to replace it. Thank you for your educational video - you are easy to learn from. May God Bless you richly!

Thanks so much for the helpful videos! My hvac won't cool, the fan outside isn't spinning, and after turning everything on using the thermostat, I can't turn the system back off again (fan on auto, system on off). Last year I had a similar problem with the unit not cooling and getting stuck on. Repair technician said it was the contactor and replaced it (had a power surge that took it out). This year I'm thinking that it has to be something different since I keep hearing that it's not usually the contactor. Thanks to your videos, I've tested both the capacitor (35+5 read as 34.6+5) and I tested the fan motor (got 55, 23, and 79 between the wires so it seems the motor is good too). I decided to finally look at the contactor before checking the compressor itself. After removing the contactor cover, I noticed the metal contact looks all scratched and pitted and there are black scorch marks. The plunger isn't stuck in, I can press it easily enough. But I'm wondering if it is bad.
I plan on replacing it due to the damage but I'm trying to find out what is the most important features to keep in mind when buying a new one. I have a single pole and I'm trying to match up all the numbers exactly when searching Amazon and it's kind of hard to find an exact match. Wondering how important the FLA/LRA/RES are to get exactly matched right. Anyway, thanks so much for these helpful videos! So grateful for such educational information!

Dan here, I watch a lot of your videos and think the are great. My comment is on your video "how to replace a contactor". You stated there was only one reason to not to replace a single pole with a double pole. I was watching other videos (not yours) , and other techs stated a single pole was necessary if someone had a heat pump, which required constant power. To overcome this, a jumper wire is needed to provide constant power on the always on side. It would be great if you could explain this. You explain thing so well. Thank.

Great video my contactor had a big hole burned in the side, lots of corrosion and the plunger had fallen off. I think it must have exploded somehow. I’m going to install a new one tomorrow.

Questions:
Where do you get the Dixie wires shown inside your unit? All I could fine was some tinned copper 95C 600V wires on Amazon.
Are tinned copper okay for connections like the contactor?
Seems like you can switch a 1 pole contactor against a 2 pole contactor, is that also true if you have a 2 poles and switch against a 1 pole?
Last, what is a 1.5 pole contactor? What can you replace it with?

Thank you for the help! I was able to replace my faulty contactor today after watching this, also converting from a single pole to double pole during the process.
I do have a question though. If there is a crank case heater installed with a single pole contactor, is it still possible to convert to a double pole? It seems to me you could just move the necessary wires to the hot side to always be hot.
