- Hours in the makeup chair got Walton Goggins most of the way to looking like the radiation-ravaged Ghoul. CGI took care of the rest, and thank God it did.

How did you like his appearance as the Ghoul?
I'm going to be one of the few people who probably say this there needed to be more ghoulish appearance for him they needed to have maybe an ear missing and part of his skull showing and not so many teeth to be honest if he's eating Flash and basically that's the only food he's eating then his teeth would not be all there! It actually pisses me off how they made this ghoul look so human
Hm. Good comment above mine. But for me, who just liked Walton ? I saw Fallout and for me he is a legend now!
He is perfect as he is
@@quadphonics agreed, he is too smoothskin to be a ghoul. Other than that, I really enjoyed his character
I played Fallout and honestly couldn’t careless if it’s anything like the game. They did a good job dumping a lot of the lore and replacing it with solid writing. Walter Goggins as the ghoul is a perfect example of this
The Ghoul is what happens when a mom tells her child "I got your nose" but then a nuke drops so she never got to give it back.
Modern day mum ghoul version is:
"Got your skin!"
Lmfao such a good comment.
Aaaand this is why I read comments. Gems like this. 😂
Hahaha that made laugh out loud at work in front of 5 or 6 co workers who already think I am weird . So thanks for that
Turns around and bites it off with her ass cheeks, because the FEV got a head start and she turned into some kind of thing.
Walton took a nap on set in full make-up and scared the crap out of himself when he woke up.
Funny how Robert Englund has almost the exact same story.....

The Ghoul must get a lot of dust going into his nasal cavity.
It's one of those. Wear shoes to protect the feet. Pants to protect whatever and so people don't turn around and run. Wear a shirt to do the same and a hat to shade my dome and my eyes but cover the big hole in my face with something? That's just going to far.......

Walton goggins is an absolutely AMAZING actor, I believe given the right movie he could for sure be an Oscar contender !
No question there, dude is great
Based on The Ghoul, I think he could legitimately win an Oscar with the worst movie script in the world.
Edit: Elaborated on idea more better
Shoulda got best supporting actor in Hateful Eight.
You know if we put another actor he would make the same role right?@@Giosuke_Giogashikata
I feel like this is 10x better than the Hank de-aging CGI
That was really bad. I wonder why they chose to leave such a long time in the screen.
Yeah! That looked like an AI generated abomination
@@sirgobbledygookyeah that was uncomfortable to watch...
I don't understand why they simply didn't use makeup to make him seem younger
Or use a younger actor. Even using Nick Weschler would have been an improvement and he's 45.
Great show and Walton Goggins steals every scene he's in.
Funny he mentioned Kris Kristofferson. Since he voiced Ranger Hanlon in Fallout New Vegas.
I was looking for this exact comment! I wonder if anyone ever told Goggins "hey, he was actually in a Fallout game".
I was thinking the exact same. I was also surprised because I'm a massive fan of Kris Kristofferson's music
I forget that Kristofferson was in a few games. Wasnt he also in Gun?
@@armintor2826 He was. He played Ned White, Colton White's father
@@armintor2826 Yep! He voices your adoptive dad Ned.
If you like Goggins, you need to check out the show, "Justified." You will love his anti-hero character there, too!
Yeah he was really good in that too... although he's good in everything i've seen him in! lol
Justified, Vice Principal, Gemstone n literally anything cause Walter Goggins shit be so good n funny
The Shield is his finest work. Absolutely crushes the finale. Some of the best TV ever made alongisde The Wire.
@@dennisdubose2444 Yep, House of a 1000 Corpses, Hateful Eight, the list goes on. He's extremely underrated.
I tried watching Justified but couldn't get through season 1. I just didn't really get attached to any of the characters, and Goggins' character just felt like some generic bad guy. Does it get better?
I wondered if they painted his nose out with CGI, it's pretty damn clever tbh!
No, they cut it off
Yep his prosthetic had dots for the match movers
It was done many times already in other shows and movies that some parts of the body were removed or changed using CGI. So it is a standard procedure nowadays.
@@wojtek1582 I was just surprised he didn't have a `green screen` painted nose!
@@jaywhy3178 He could have while shooting. We see only photo from make-up room I suppose.
he was amazing in Fallout, hopefully he wins an Emmy for his performance.
He was a brilliant choice for this role!
Sold the series to Me😂
at first i underestimate walton goggins makeup of ghoul look like low budget deadpool. but now after seeing the full episode series the makeup was more impressive than deadpool
Yeah, it's a real slow burn Fallout 4 Ghoul that just works so damned well, it's unbelievable.
Googins nailed this part . loved the show , looking forward two season 2
I was stunned by how well they shaded the nose cavity, I was interested in seeing how well they did it and was happily surprised!
I wonder what we see when a sunlight would hit straight inside it.
Clever but I can’t help thinking those teeth look terrific for a 200 year old with radiation poisoning
Wonders of fluoride
teeth rot from bacteria, of which i doubt any can survive in a ghoul, so apart from the risk of breaking the teeth i'm not surprised all he has is a bit of yellowing.
he has increased regeneration - why not his teeth?
Dude deserves an Emmy for this role. Definitely stole the show.
I'm surprised they didn't paint his nose black to make him look a bit more ghoul-like for the benefit of the other actors.
What a stupid idea that not a single person would benefit from.
@@Gizmetti blud got mad for no reason lmaoo
@@Gizmetti Sort of like your comment, except less so.

That's why they get paid the big bucks to act..
I did a slew of scifi shows and movies in the 90s. Flew a lot of BIG ships into battle. The enemy spanned ours and other universes and they were always the same.
People have no idea just how dangerous and well armed tennis balls on strings are in the world of movies and TV shows.
Those damned little Death Stars that span all scifi shows and eras.
Just hanging there over the cameras blowing up my ship as people tell me that's where all the death is coming from. Coming for YOU.........
DAMN THOSE FUZZY BALLS OF DOOM!!!!!!!! DAMN YOUUUUU!!!!!!!!
To this day I can't watch a single tennis match without thinking how those invincible green tennis balls killed me on Star Trek, Babylon 5, Starship Troopers, Space Above and Beyond and more......
PTSD watching a tennis match. It isn't pretty......
Goggins really got the face for the TV
The Ghoul was an awesome character brought to screen. Everyone involved, from the actor, to director, to makeup artists, should be proud.
Goggins is a gem that should be protected at all costs!!
Pretty sure that gem can protect himself 👍😀
Coolest damn character in cinematic history.
I liked the James Carville accent...nailed it
Walton is fantastic as the Ghoul! So well acted by him. He is my favorite character by far!
As a fan of the Fallout franchise, it makes me VERY happy to see how this production resembles the Fallout world. I'm overly impressed. Great actors, great attention to detail.
Great attention to detail? Is that a perfectly normal looking two headed cow they’re calling a Brahmin? Why do ghouls need injections? (That was never the lore). You people will buy sand from Todd Howard on a deserted island you’re so cucked
Their practical work around the mouth is outstanding.
Really hope we get to see more of the ghoul's journey before the vault being opened.
Seriously they could do a whole series just on his character alone.
@@johndurrett3573 Geniunely hope they do. Otherwise it's just a missed opportunity to use such an amazing actor who's never truly had their time to shine in their own genuine character.
Walton Goggins. Best name ever.
Walton Goggins to this role reminds me of what Matt Damon is to Jason Bourne.
He is the real star of this show. Excellent!
Without the CGI man looks like Yul Brynner in 'Westworld' (1973)
He's always cool.
one of my favorite actors
Goggins’s character, for me, is the show. Even over Lucy
Absolutely steals the show..couldn’t wait for the next scene with him...
As someone who never played the games yet who digs the basic premise of the franchise I immediately took a keen interest when I learned that Goggins was involved. But I have to say I'm enjoying the series in pretty much its entirety three eps in.
Walton looks really good as Ghoul. Really good. Show looks great too.Ghoul looks great
Saving up this series for when I have worked my way through Netflix and Disney+. Looking forward to it, liked Waltons roles in The Shield and Justified 😁
I play fallout back then and cant stop thinkin their face is like some actor I know..and when they announced Walton bobbins I'm like THEY NAILED IT
Goggins was great
His nose was probably the best CG in the entire show
But bad CG aside the show was really good
He was awesome in the Shield. That show is one of my all time favourites
Walter Goggins is amazing in almost every role he’s in!!!!!!!!!
Wow it flew past me that he is also Vault Boy!
It's very rare that a video game adaptation is done with such attention to details.
Is it weird that I think he looks like Ryan Reynolds when his nose is missing?
Awesome actor.
The pic of Walt and the makeup artist goes insanely hard
The Ghoul character was my favorite on the show. He was so well played.
The ghoul being vault boy is such an insane contrast to me
The nose put me off so many times, don’t know why it just didn’t look right. Like they just used CGI to blacken everything where the noise was. I felt it could’ve used some Details on the inside, some structure or something
they literally turned him into ryan reynolds lmao
Man, I was hoping it was CGI. As someone with sinus issues, the idea of having my nose obstructed like that would drive me crazy.
i feel like Timothy Olyphant could either be another Ghoul or a Vault dweller lol
hopefully a prominent character in S2. he would make a great ex-NCR ranger, or a non-ghoulified version of this character.
Haha, was that Eric Estrada I saw 😮
Yes. You’re one of the smart few to notice.
You mean Ponch? Dick Ritchie is in it to
@@Spooky_515 yep, the asshole.
Yes
It was
He makes the show!
the ghoul is the main character in fallout tv show. ill fight anyone who argue otherwise
The Ghoul looks surprisingly non-grousome for a 250 year old ghoul tbh
Goggd killed it. They couldn't have casted the show better, everyone did a great job. I'd have to say Coop is the most complex character but I loved Max's inner conflict and Lucy's "well shit.. I guess I'm the main character of this story because I should be dead like 30 times by now" 😂
I'm imagining a version of this where the part of his nose sticking out is painted green to make it easier to remove out in post, and it's hilarious to me 😂
Uncle baby Billy did an excellent job as the ghoul
The fact that he did the same role without a nose with similar skin.. In the maze runner 3 death cure
I thought that his nose was pushed up so that the prostheic one can fit, but turns out i was wrong
Seems like part of the reason Fallout was so successful is because they got real talent who treated it like a proper job and not just actors who treat it like just a videogame adaptation.
Other than the obvious lack of nose he looks totally fine.
last 8 seconds. you're welcome. 2:40
if they painted it black it could look like a necrotic nose before it falls off
Wow I didn’t even know it was cgi just figured it was a really good job with the makeup guess it’s pretty good cgi then
Unironically they should cast Jason Beghe as a ghoul in the show, his gravelly voice is perfect.
But this character also need to be a charismatic actor. I mean in the fallout show. He is an actor. Not just ghoul.
@@DBT1007 Oh not for this character specifically, I'm just saying he'd be good for a minor ghoul role due to his voice.
One thing i never understood. If ghoul knew about the weakness in the T-60s armor, why didnt he just shoot there when he fought Maximus in Filly?
Lots of the times people commend great practical effects, it’s only that great because it works in conjunction with great visual effects. Like 90% of the time you want both. It’s not that cgi is bad, it’s that deadlines come far too fast, pay is low, morale is low, too much chi is bad because it is very hard to do full cgi shots for a whole movie or show. But using it in conjunction with practical effects saves time
Chi? WTF lol
@@Jako-o2x commendable work, I seemed to have misclicked and I am surely an idiot for that error.
He basically looks like The Red Skull from Captain America: The First Avenger.
Funnily enough, vulnerability and insecurity is exactly what pre-war Cooper Howard seemed to be feeling in those scenes, so I think that worked in his favor. The doomsday clock was clearly about to strike midnight and it was shaking his dyed-in-the-wool American patriotism.
Who else is playing through the FO4 update as Goggins?
The show is surprisingly good, but he steals it all the same. Can't wait to see what they do next.
Huh, i assumed they painted his nose green to make it easier to remove with cgi (like a green screen).
For such a small target it's more important to track it than "remove" so it's better to use dots to track the exact location points
Im not sure how anyone would find him more jarring to look at with his real nose poking through the prosthetics. Surely it removes some of the illusion and makes it easier to dismiss the whole thing as a costume. The missing nose was probably the most confronting aspect of his look.
Did Coop actually play “vault boy” or was he just playing himself as a kind of celebrity endorsement?
The Ghoul is Master! We made his custom LEGO minifigure. Please check it out.
Shout out to my boy who cut off his nose to become a ghoul ... what a legend
So without cgi he’s just deadpool
It's funny how at 2:32 he forgot about that weak weld under the breastplate.
Why not just hand the actors Fallout New Vegas and FO4 and say go here, here, here and here and pay attention to this guy that guy and whatever that is. Come back in 100 hours. There will be a test............. People with thousands of hours in FO games are watching the show. Something tells me if the actors played the games they just might understand their characters and the world they are stepping into..
If I hear another actor say I never played this or that or I didn't even look at the source material as I wanted to take the character a different way I will... Well. Do nothing......
LOL. All I can do is not watch that show..LOL
So far.. FO is AMAZING!!! Huge fan of the games and so far I am a HUGE fan of the show.
For cgi alot of ppl use it too much like the new flash or some b rated bullshit but his his roll with just his nose is perfect use of cgi.
Deadpool with smooth skin
One nasty ghoul he is ❤❤❤❤
HE REALLY DIDN'T CUT HIS NOSE OFF?????? I'M SHOCKED.
I want to know how the CGI replaces his nose.
They use a prosthetic with white dots in filming. The dailies go to the vfx house where special software called "match moving" is used to estimate the nose's location in 3D. This data goes to the artists where they model and paint his nose cavity, and it tracks as its position moves on camera. Minor adjustments are made for lighting and placement as needed.
What I wanted: what he looks like without CGI
What I got: spoilers spoilers spoilers
They need a different engine for the game , like u.e
Ghoul with nose is just Deadpool
The only change I would have liked to see would be prewar Copper have bleach blonde hair, that would really make him look like the vault boy more than he already does
They kinda missed that part that didnt they
I want a rap battle. The Ghoul vs. Vecna!
What a hot take. Any character that is created using cgi obviously looks weird without cgi.
Do you ever make videos with beavers in them? I was hoping this was a beaver video but it’s usually movies and Pokémon stuff. Also if you know where I can find a real beaver around in the yard please let me know in the comments section down below?
Feo, fuerte, y formal 😎🔥
If there was no cgi horror movies would be good again
Bad writing will never be saved by practical effects ... soooo nope
Fallout is surprisingly fun because of Goggins
@@StormofBytes I guess should leave the horror franchise then
I partly agree but bad actors and poor casting is more to blame. As far as creature features go you are 💯% correct. The Howling and An American Werewolf in London has yet to be outdone. The sequel to American Werewolf's SFX was complete 🗑️.
well no shit, its almost like its a tv show that uses modern film techniques. OH MY GODDDDD what a crazy thought. Gotta love such lazy video on a dead channel with no passion left to be seen.
Even with the white tracking dots I'm not really understanding how they did the side shots, e.g. him walking at 1:18. His real nose would've obstructed part of the background, so after the digital removal of the nose, how did they fill in the background bits so seamlessly?
It probably used tracking, so they basically model a more complete image of the background that moves with the shot matching the camera angle and fills in the small amount of new background needed when they remove his nose.
@@batlover1977 man. Seems like a painstaking process.
@@darrenmart3783It took 5 hours to apply make up. It's not that bad
Hey when do we get to play a fallout game as a ghoul character
Goggins was only the initial likeness for vault boy (for the thumbs up version)... He is not vault boy.
Love the character, but I was a little underwhelmed by the makeup. Expected something closer to a Freddy Krueger deformation.
