What goes unnoticed with his playing, especially with the Chick Corea Elektric band, is his incredible intonation. I’ve listened to all of their albums multiple times over the past 30 years and his pitch is excellent, especially in the altissimo range when doubling Chick’s synths. Stud musician.
I studied with Eric Marienthal during Covid, in zoom masterclass format. A surreal experience. He played songs for us but also had technique stuff he reviewed as well as doing Q&As. Hands down the nicest guy I've ever met. His technique, control and mastery of the saxophone is downright terrifying to witness. All the sax players in "smooth jazz" are amazing players, but guys like Eric, Everette Harp, Kirk Whalum and Gerald Albright are in a completely different league of their own.
@@speedkleen6346 the mouthpiece is something that you need to found with your experience, but if you like to try custom you are in your own right way.
Although it is difficult to perceive, the trombones are in fact occasionally nodding their head. Although this does not seem to be a very large action in comparison to the other sections, this is one of the highest forms of respect when dealing with the low brass species.
I went to High School with Eric. He was 3 years ahead of me. He would come back from time to time and do concerts. My god what a talent he was even then, probably not 20 years old yet. He was my teacher at ISOMATA the summer after I graduated. Such a helpful and honestly humble person. I would later run into him during my time at GWC while studying with Tom Kubis. After moving to the east coast I ran into him again when he did a concert at a winery in the Finger Lakes. Haven't seen him since then, but picked up every CD he did. We lost Michael Brecker, but thankfully we still have Eric.
Always loved how Eric is just so much on top of his instrument, the control in combination with the madness is unreal. And while he is riffing non-stop, he keeps it adventurous. What part did you like the most? The epic altissimo glissando? The part with only sax and drums? The modal interchange? Let me know in the comments! By the way, one silly high school story with this solo (album version, with also this altissimo glissando). I was secretly listening to Hit The Ground Running while we were supposed to work in silence, somewhere in the back of the classroom with just one earpiece in so I could still hear when the teacher would say something. All good, except when that glissando came in, it even blasted fully through the earplugs catching the attention of the class, and the teacher... Thanks for the inspiration Eric, and the detention. /Jorre
Just played on stage with this guy recently in Wisconsin, and he’s just such a fun and crazy talented person to be up there with and the experience on stage with him was something else.
Been transcribing this for school for a little bit now. It's been one of the coolest and most humbling things I've ever set out to accomplish. Eric Marienthal is truly just on a whole different level. How he achieves licks like @ 1:49 off the dome absolutely baffles me.
When I was in high school my schools marching band would go to Disneyland to perform in the parade. One year we just so happened to get the day when this concert happened, and I got to sit front row for this concert. I'm in my 30's now and I still remember it like it was yesterday. Such an awesome experience.
the happy and smiling alto sax player behind Mariethal is the GREAT Sal Lozano one of the best player in the L.A area (and not only), is him in the great solo of Attack Of The Killer Tomatoes ! His smile proves that there shouldn't be envy between musicians, great Sal 👏👏👏👏👏
Eric's absolutely killing it in the altissimo register 🤯 Truly awesome to watch the notation flying by in real time. That being said, notation doesn't do the 'live' music real justice. It's well nigh impossible to get that soulful feeling and raw emotion down on paper, so to speak.
i am so happy to see more videos of Eric. he came to my highschool last year. And actually James Morrison came to my school yesterday i think I'm staying at this school. lmaooo
Had the pleasure of seeing Eric Marienthal play as guest artist at a jazz festival at a community college. During a masterclass segment with a QnA with a few songs here and there my question was about playing over chords and not the key. The best example I could think to use was giant steps and then after giving me some advice he and his combo performed giant steps unrehearsed. Dude was an amazing talent all the way through the night and I don’t know if I’ll ever witness such absurd levels of musicianship ever again.

Give the trombones a break. It’s hard to count 128 bars of rest while the saxophones do their thing.
True 😂
As a trombone player I feel that
Trombones can count?
@@7thStJazzBand Mine was able to count up to seven a few years ago
@@7thStJazzBand nah we just watch for the saxes to raise their horns and then we do

Very true observation!
1000% agreed! Insane work!
I understand nothing in what you said but I completely agree

Do you know what mouthpiece he uses?
@@speedkleen6346 Now he uses his own mouthpiece from Retro Revival, the Eric Marienthal Special. Before that he was using a Beechler custom alto
@@speedkleen6346 the mouthpiece is something that you need to found with your experience, but if you like to try custom you are in your own right way.
He does do a lot of "smooth jazz" stuff when he's solo but the cat can shred anything else, just listen to him on any Gordon Goodwin chart
@@jerrodshack7610 Totally. Also his stuff with Chick Corea is incredible

Low brass here: Can confirm. They're into it.
This is the solo that started my love for being in big bands. I had never heard of altissimo before this, and now I’m deeply in love with all of it
It's amazing when you hit just the right altossimo note above the break and scream it loud and proud....whew. dude ripped it!

Very cool! Thanks for sharing that story
I'll bet that Eric PRACTICED like a fool... non-stop time on his horn... so that now, he "OWNS" every sax from Alto to Bari !!
0:36 definitely my favorite part -- thrilling the other sax guys -- they know what's up
Stupendous stuff. Drums and Eric for me, every time. His melodic runs are incredible but his sense of rhythm and is beyond compare.
Been waiting for this transcription for years... Dude is a monster but also the kindest soul ever.

Would love a tutorial on how to get that glissando.
I'll try to find a moment in the week to explain that in a tutorial!
I would have been both a concerned and proud parent to have my son getting detention over this 😄
Eric's stanky altissimo G# is one of my favorite sounds that can come out of an alto saxophone.
@@SharpElevenMusic there is an old video tape of him explaining how he does all his altissimo sliding. It’s a really good video.
Insane solo. Doing the transcription must not have been easy
yeah, but well worth it though, learned a ton from this one
god i was listening to this in the background and hearing the "MODAL INTERCHANGE" scared the life out of me

Ah yes, reed quality is what prevents me from sounding like that 😆
Exactly, just what I thought
Definitely the mouthpiece amd ligature
Definitely the air pressure and composition. How you supposed to play with only 19% oxygen at 101kPa??
😅😅😅

His intonation is just so insanely spot on!! 😮
I just come here every once in a short while listening to the first 30 bars. And it’s amazing everytime.
Marienthal is an OUTRIGHT ANIMAL !!
I love eric❤ forever. sending hugs. from switzerland🇨🇭
Eric marienthal was aparently the teacher of my current jazz teacher!
MODAL INTERCHANGE!!!!
Amazing care to detail on this transcription, as always!
Eric Marienthal é de outro planeta.
Played with him a few times back in the day (trumpet player). He was always amazing.

Crazy beautiful. So uplifting.
Those altissimmo notes have had me tingling for the last 3 months.
Mr Marienthal inspired me to start learning the alto. I switched to tenor, but I have a special spot for the alto sax. He's the best!!!

Good lord I forgot what a fire breathing dragon Eric is
The fucking drums though!
Holy crap this guy can blow!
That’s out of the world. Wow brilliant. Chapeau 👍👊🎷
That's when you look at your sax and think about giving up! LOL
I am a trombone player and alto and bari sax player and I’m just impressed in every way, can’t believe the trombones didn’t react
This is every sax players dream ngl
Eric is an alto legend.
Amazing just amazing
Eric Marienthal is a beast
What an Amazing player Eric is.🎷👏👏
Hallucinant!!!!
Imagine being the 2nd trombone player, and not even nodding your head when Eric hits that break... that's a real psycho
Trombones don't bat an eye because they know they're the best lol
Wooow! The Altissimo is crazy with this dude!😎
Excellent thanks!!!
Mr Marienthal
Imagine to have to play your solo after this dude.
Lol, the sax player just played more notes in one solo than the entire trombone section has played in their entire career.
Hot damn, that solo was fire 🥵🥵🥵
That was amazing!!
Masato Honda plays a lot like
Eric. Both a joy to listen to.
Eric is a monster and always on top of his game!
i met him in person while he was warming up for a performance an he ws so grand
fantastic
Badass alto 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾

Hell yes!
Love the directions regarding the mic change
Well, the bone section DOES have Andy Martin…and all of those glissandos from Eric? Just call that slide envy!! 😂
Eric is the man!
Awesome WOW!

"Take another identical mic for an even better performance" lmao

Siiiiick!
MY JAW WAS ON THE FLOOR AFTER 0:32

Mr Erik the Boss.
Second Alto dude (to Eric's right) was diggin' the shit out of Eric's playing.

I think it's safe to say he didn't just come back from a date with Elaine.
Une sacré pointure au saxe il dévore comme on dit en terme musical les pattes de mouches

This is what slap base looks like on sax
Hes got that LA studio sound
Eric fricken RIPPPEEED this. No wonder he had been with Jeff Lorber for almost a decade.
Whoah !!! Mel Gibson is a real killer at the alto sax !!!
How is it possible that he played live even better than in the studio recording?
wow
My teacher taught Eric Marienthal and now he's stuck with me 💀
Eric Firenthal 💪
This guy is fucking incredible.
Basically if John Zorn played in big bands.
I hope one day I will be as good as him....
The trombonists are impressed, they just have a very loose embouchure.
O Eric é Show 1000
Waiting for the band to stop playing and just stare at him
Pero qué genio
The craziest part was that this was filmed at disney land
"Sir, this is just my 11 year old daughters birthday party"
