Imma do u a favor a bring u back to this brilliant performance lol. I'm also a drummer and I'm curious if others have noticed the same as me. That is, every time I've listened to this, I feel like the drums, esspecially those beautiful fills and accents, makes this entire solo so much better. To the point where while Leo's talent can't be denied, but the musical performance is equally, if not more, on the drummer. Edit: More or less, do you (or anyone else) feel the same about the drums here? Like the more I listen the more I'm blown away.
@XmanAdanacLax I said the same when I first started getting this recommended to me last year. The symbiosis of Sax & drums throughout this solo really elevate both, the kit is mixed really great for a live mix and has a nice timbre to it within the rest of the band which is still somewhat rare to see with recordings, it's very well done
My first year or two with the saxophone were spent as a 12-13 year old on the Alto - my tutor promised he'd let me try a Tenor one day when I grew into it, but the Baritone was way, way beyond my weedy little frame. I'm an adult now, but I can't help be impressed by this dude's ability to throw a Baritone sax around like it's a plaything.
As a fellow baritone sax player, it kinda frustrates me how much altissimo is used because it means I can NOT play this for the life of me (and I desperately want to!)
That was incredible. I played alto for 10 years with some tenor and soprano mixed in during high school but could never do baritone. I tried many times but was never able to get a note out. This guy playing so smoothly and hitting the altissimo register with such ease is amazing.
Leo has amazed me since the first time i watched Too Many Zooz on the metro about 10 years ago. the whole band is impeccable as well. nasty funky vibes. keep it playing till the world melts
The first part really shows the importance of groove. Most of the solo is arpeggiations and simple harmony outline, but the way he plays it sounds amazing.

As a bari player who got to perform this with his collegiate band, I love every part of this. Those jump cuts were amazing. Also appreciate seeing these types of solos written out. I always luv this sax guys videos. He is the complete package,IMHO. His solos are listenable. Be honest, a lot of Jazz solos sound like someone is practicing. It was a "late night prom" so it was a bit looser but there were a lot of people who stuck around from the classical prom earlier and had their minds blown (myself included). The BBC coverage was so sneering towards Leo P it really annoyed me when I re-watched it, though they did make the fair point that Charles Mingus (the prom being a tribute to him) would've probably wanted to thump him!
@@swalsh91 He had the crowd on their feet, in fairness to him. The Proms is usually pretty tame, prim-and-proper, but Leo had them mesmerised and they just went along for the ride. Music is *supposed* to take you away like that, and jazz especially! It flows from and speaks to the soul.
Non-musician here. Thank you for the sheets man. After watching lots of your videos I can start to see how a music would "flow" without hearing it. Can't imagine it's tone but at least I could follow and hear the notes individually even without the moving bar like in 2Set videos. Thanks so much!

He's been my favorite subway busker for almost a decade. Love to see the recognition. He was in Lucky Chops and Too Many Zooz if you want to see more OG subway dancing. Favorite vid is probably "the coolest saxophone player ever"
Wow... This Guy rocks altissimo... He's almost 2 octaves above the "highest note" on baritone saxophone... Explanation: altissimo are notes that are above the standard pitch range of your instrument and can't be played with a special finger position but have to be played with a special mouth technique which is a whole other story in woodwinds than in brass instruments. This is crazy hard and most woodwinds players will never master this. And to make it even harder, this can pretty much only be learned reliably on one given instrument. Change the corpus or mouthpiece and it will work completely different... So basically what this guy demonstrates with this 3-5 crazy high notes alone (even if you ignore the rest of the crazy solo) is a whole crapton of practice on this specific instrument, that went in those few notes alone....
@@kazuhasfakeprofile8001 What are you referring to with that? Artificial harmonics? What do you mean by "pitch technique". Pitch technique on guitar is "use an electronic tuner to tune to 440hz and then play on the right frets"
@@BibleStorm I don't know the correct name, my apologies. They always told me it's called "pitch" because I studied in another language. It works mostly for electric guitar, I don't know if I explained myself
@@kazuhasfakeprofile8001 What you're describing is commonly called an artificial harmonic, also know as a pinch harmonic. You could trying searching youtube for "guitar artificial harmonic" to see an example of it to confirm we're both talking about the same thing. It is a harmonic, it's just more difficult than a "natural" harmonic because your left and right hand both have to be at the correct length to find a certain frequency. You can find several different harmonics by moving your right hand and "pinching" at different lengths of the string.

This guy from the New York subways is a genuine legend. So pleased he's now stepping out! Superb notation as always, George!!
"Stepping out" I see what you did there
Too Many Zooz! Union Station.
He became famous busking, but that's immediately after he graduated from conservatory at the Manhattan School of Music. He's a trained musician who happened to become famous on RUclips. He's no random busker that was self-taught and lurking in the shadows.
@@mar_man813 People rarely are. Everything on the internet is manufactured. Nothing is real.
@@mar_man813to be fair, nobody said that wasn’t the case
It always amazes me to see extravagantly dressed people match their style with their talent. Truly an amazing lad that Leo P.
Leo P does not fuck around, in fairness to him. He knows what he has and what he can do, and he *FLAUNTS* it, sometimes a little too proudly. Man's a peacock, he can't help himself.
@@hydroknight01 and that's exactly what I love about him! Cocky with a purpose!
I love how at 2:33 you can just tell that the guy playing the trumpet is like “oh hell man this shit is craaaazy”
I’m a drummer, but acquainted with many sax players and anyone who has the lungs to blow this is not human. What a monster! Especially his reed banding!
@@XmanAdanacLax was just gonna comment on that. The drummer deserves fucking props for staying absolutely On It in this performance
Gonna bring you back to say that a good amount of this performance is 1-2 octaves HIGHER than what a bari sax is supposed to play

The fact that he is also dancing while playing is real impressive
My first year or two with the saxophone were spent as a 12-13 year old on the Alto - my tutor promised he'd let me try a Tenor one day when I grew into it, but the Baritone was way, way beyond my weedy little frame.
I'm an adult now, but I can't help be impressed by this dude's ability to throw a Baritone sax around like it's a plaything.
Leo P.'s playing is the noise it makes inside an 11 year old's head when you tell them they can have extra mozzarella sticks.
Nice 😂
No thats ska music
@@aTF2player I mean... that IS the meme I stole the joke from, so you're not wrong.
I love that the majority of the solo is outside of the saxophone's normal range. This dude has mastered the use of altissimo
As a fellow baritone sax player, it kinda frustrates me how much altissimo is used because it means I can NOT play this for the life of me (and I desperately want to!)

i will never understand how people can have so much talent that they can just jump around with a bari sax and play (almost) perfectly
When the Bible says "Gabriel will blow his trumpet" when the world ends, it meant all the angels will play this banger.
What a way to go out

That's how you see how experienced the drummer is. Dude nailed those hits lol
Makes it seem non improvised while it’s also pure improvisational genius
Drummer is so solid
That was incredible. I played alto for 10 years with some tenor and soprano mixed in during high school but could never do baritone. I tried many times but was never able to get a note out. This guy playing so smoothly and hitting the altissimo register with such ease is amazing.
He plays like how all sax players think and want to look while playing. Utter talent.
as a tenor player i can confirm
as an alto player i can confirm
as a soprano player I can confirm
Skill, not talent
@@rykehuss3435 tbh no one gives a damn
If you ever feel useless, remember there are other bari saxophones on that stage
They have an important use too! You need something to compare this genius to.
Lmfao
Leo has amazed me since the first time i watched Too Many Zooz on the metro about 10 years ago. the whole band is impeccable as well. nasty funky vibes. keep it playing till the world melts
The first part really shows the importance of groove. Most of the solo is arpeggiations and simple harmony outline, but the way he plays it sounds amazing.
God Moanin is such a devastating groove as it is and Leo just kills it
I need a bumper sticker that says "Honk with pelvic thrust"
Thank God I'm subbed to this channel bringing me all these gems.
thank you for subscribing
me too!
this man is high key one of the modern sax greats - still remember when our middle school band director introduced us to Too Many Zooz, and I’ve been enamored with the bari sax since … it’s been almost seven years since then and this guy still rocks and I’m glad he’s getting some attention in other collectives too 🤘
This is so ridiculous and yet is my favourite video on RUclips
0:34 this part is amazing!!! I'm freaking out
Finally someone else appreciating that masterpiece
You know
and the thing is its probably the easiest part to play in the whole solo
@@wbeecroft the transcription is easy in this part but playing like that is another thing.
@@javierxhr nah that's definitely the easiest part to play in the whole solo lol. Doesn't mean it's easy or not good, but relative to the rest of the solo it's easy
"Honk with pelvic thrust" - "Return to frog" - i imagine it is a multiplication of joy - Leo likes to dance while playing - The Audience likes to watch Leo, enjoy moving while playing - You enjoyed notating Leos Moves (i bet!), i actually enjoyed seeing this in the transcription - somebody might even find joy reading this... :-)
The amount of cardio this man has must be insane. For his lungs to support all of this is incredible.
That "Honk with Pelvic Thrust" killed me 🤣
As a bari sax player that plays jazz, from a scale of 1 to fonk, this is FONK. The lungs on this man...
is no one talking about the comedic gold that is george's commentary?
As a bari player who got to perform this with his collegiate band, I love every part of this. Those jump cuts were amazing.
Also appreciate seeing these types of solos written out. Yeah it’s great to see what you can do just by ear, but seeing some of this written out gives me a better idea of what to do to spice up solos and how to phrase better. Thank you!
as a sax player, this looks so good on our part 😭 of course i’m only in 8th grade but that’s literally so impressive i could only imagine how proud he was of himself after this masterpiece
Keep it up man, currently in hs band as alto, and it’s worth it. If you can, get into jazz as it unlocks a whole new world of fun
Its alright im older and you are probably better
i hope high school is treating you okay!! id say "well" but it doesnt treat anyone well haha. stick with the sax kid!!!
I have been play alto sax for 2 years and I can say this guy as giant 🫁🫁🫁🫁🫁🫁
My advice as a junior, get as good as you possibly can while you’re a freshmen. Make your senior year amazing
I wish to be this cool one day
Those splats are legendary; they get me every time. This is what mastering an instrument looks like.
I was there ... I cant decide what was better, his music or his moves
Leo is clearly some kind of wizard. I'm out of breath just watching this
I am FLOORED. Outstanding job transcribing this! This guy is INCREDIBLE! Absolutely INSANE
the pelvic honk is always a challenge for me
I've never heard anyone in my life dominate a sax like that boy just did. I'm completely blown away.
This solo and the one before it both have the air of "I own this stage now and I will do with it as I please."
I always luv this sax guys videos. He is the complete package,IMHO. His solos are listenable. Be honest, a lot of Jazz solos sound like someone is practicing. The guy has the ability to create very melodic solos & the showmanship of a true entertainer. In his case, if he only had his level of ability in either category (his musicality or talent as an entertainer), he would be star material. BTW, it's not just talent. I am certain he has spent a lot of time working on all his skills. Sorry, I am just a fan.
Can you imagine being in a high school jazz band playing bari sax and seeing THIS on your sheet music?
After noticing this was at the proms, I just have this picture in my mind of somebody going to see a night of classical music and seeing this :D
2:06 this is why trumpet players are great partners for women.
Who then find out Sax players can use both hands not just one and don’t stay with the trumpet players very long.
He's also in the band Too Many Zoos. They street preform in NYC, and have a FB page. They're really good.
Believe me when I tell you this: this man has ALL the lungs. Bari is tremendous on the lungs and this dude banged that out like it was nothing
When you have the cleanest trumpet as accompaniment 👌

I thought that was the dude from the subway! Thanks for clearing that up
As soon as the trumpet kicks in the chills are kicking in too! god dang!
Thank you for showing us this actual FILTHY performance.

Non-musician here. Thank you for the sheets man. After watching lots of your videos I can start to see how a music would "flow" without hearing it. Can't imagine it's tone but at least I could follow and hear the notes individually even without the moving bar like in 2Set videos. Thanks so much!
THe multiphonic at 1:28 gets me every time
2:11 damn somebody broke his trumpet
This is my all-time favorite jazz tune by a mile. So many times I’ve been just completely taken apart and put back together by it, both straight and substance-enhanced, and to me it’s just PERFECT. Excellent performance of it, and I’ve heard a LOT of them. Every song should have a little obscene honking in it as far as I’m concerned.
how it feels to fight a cuphead boss:
Leo P is amazing. I saw Too Many Zooz when they came through Denver a couple of years ago. He danced THE WHOLE TIME and never missed a note.
He's been my favorite subway busker for almost a decade. Love to see the recognition. He was in Lucky Chops and Too Many Zooz if you want to see more OG subway dancing. Favorite vid is probably "the coolest saxophone player ever"
I don't usually listen to jazz but HOLY SHIT. That was something else.
It's the same idea behind the pitch technique for the guitar if I'm not mistaken
It's not the harmonic though, this technique consists in using both the pelctrum and a part of the finger at the same time to create a really high pitched note.
@@BibleStorm oh thank you! Now i know how to call it
