Can I omit stearic acid from this recipe?... What the function of Stearic acid in lotion making.. Can you please explain me? What the pH of the lotion you made???
I have recently and the lotion was wayyy to fluid, I had to melt BTMS and more emulsifying wax and cetyl alcohol. so the next time I will add so stearic acid. It is used as a thickener
I bought the kit about a year ago, and everybody seems to love the lotion! One recommendation though - the bottles that Anne-Marie used, which are the same that come with the kit, are not the best containers for this lotion. It's pretty thick, so I bought some tubes that allow gravity to pull the lotion down. That's my only complaint. lol Now that it's November, I think it's time for me to make some more, to give as gifts!
+Valleri Thomas So glad you love the lotion Valleri! It makes amazing gifts for friends and family. =) We found the bottles that come with the kit work well, but you can also use tubes if you like! You can also add up to 80% water to your recipe to help thin the lotion out a bit. I have been doing this lotion since then, and its lovely. Non greasy, right texture. I love it!, thank you so much for this recipe. I am wondering if you have one only for face. I really want to make one. Thank you so much.
Hi I was wondering, I want to turn my whip hair and body cream(which is all oil based) into a water base cream. Which preservative/s would you recommend that's safe for both hair and skin and want dry either of them out.

Hi Jeannine! You can add micas to your lotion! We recommend adding starting out with 1/8 tsp. per pound of lotion and adding more if you want it darker. It also helps to mix your colorant with your fragrance oil before adding it to your lotion. That way it mixes in nicely. =)
Made my first batch of lotion today! I knew the batch was more than I needed to try for the first time, but was able to divide up portions and use different fragrances. I will never pay the specialty boutique $14 for a 4oz custom scented lotion again! Trying the emulsified scrub next. :)
+starfishsewing That's awesome! I just love handmade lotion. Have fun making the scrub. Let me know how it turns out! =) Emulsified scrub: ruclips.net/video/cB7t9rNo0ck/видео.html
Hi, Ms. Anne Marie Thank you for sharing this video! I have some questions. Can I use Coconut oil instead of Sweet Almond oil? And is it okay to use Lavender oil in this recipe? Madison
Hi Madison! You can use coconut oil, but keep in mind it is solid at room temperature. That means your lotion may be a little thicker. A small test batch may be helpful. =) Also, you can absolutely use lavender essential oil in this recipe! Just make sure it's skin safe. You can use our Fragrance Calculator to find out exactly how much to add: www.brambleberry.com/Pages/Fragrance-Calculator.aspx
I just wanted to make sure that people understand you can't "STERILIZE" your equipment, implements, etc. Only hospital grade machines can "STERILIZE". You can disinfect or sanitize things like that, not sterilize them. I think explaining the difference is extremely important just so they know that there's always a germ or two left. Which nothing can be done to prevent and will be as safe as possible. Your products and tools will be as clean as they can get without using a hospital grade machine but not completely sterile. I hope I don't overstep.....I wash and disinfect/sanitize body tools and other products in my line of work. So this kind of thing is embedded in my brain.lol By the way, I love your channel so much!!! You're amazing! I apologize if I overstepped my boundaries. ;-)
You are correct! In the description box we say: Anne-Marie uses the term sterilize which is technically incorrect. She should be using the term disinfect when talking about cleaning tools for lotion making. Thanks for watching Cynthia. =)
Hello! I definitely believe in researching each product that goes into my recipes, and I am comfortable with using these. However, if you are not comfortable using preservatives, you may like to try our body butter recipes. Because they don’t have water, you don’t need to add a preservative. Whipped Shea Butter: www.soapqueen.com/bath-and-body-tutorials/lotion/easy-whipped-shea-butter-2/
Do you know of another method of evaluation that is foolproof? If so, please share. What is your idea of how to evaluate natural or other manmade products? Perhaps you prefer the biological consequences of using unpreserved products. It's like you think you have a point, but then refuse to make it.
Thanks. This is so useful and informative. I watched many DIY videos about lotion and beeswax stuff in the last few days and sometimes I got grossed out when they go about the process as if they're making cookie batter while blabbering about their personal lives. This is very professionally done and from now on I'm sticking with your channel!
Lucy Lux Hi Lucy! Thank you so much for your feedback! If you like, you can heat your ingredients up using a double boiler. That's what is so awesome about making your own products - you can choose what goes into them, and how to make it! =) Double boiler maker: www.brambleberry.com/Double-Boiler-Maker-Double-Boiler-Maker-P3796.aspx
***** I do not own a microwave. The double boiler is my method of choice. I wanted to purchase from you, until you used your microwave! You rock, but this method for melting to mix things does not.
Lucy Lux Hi Lucy! We often use the microwave to heat things up and have found the lotion still feels great. However, using a microwave is not required! A double boiler is a good option as well. Thanks again for your feedback Lucy, and thanks for watching. =)
I love this company. I make my own soap, lotion, body wash and Toner. Im going to start making my own shampoo and conditioners soon. I love learning about essential oils and healthy options.
Very interested making ang DIY lotion. Can i put fresh puree fruits as additional additives ( avocado, carrot, papaya, & milk)? what proper ingredients to add to make tha lotion long last for scent. 2. How many days before using the DIY lotion after it made. Thanks for the reply..God bless.♥️♥️♥️.
Is this lotion oily in any way? does it absorb well into the skin? I make my own body butter but I haven't figured out how to not make it oily and it is hard for the skin to absorb. Let me know ;) Thank you!
Glad you're enjoying that recipe! If you prefer thicker lotion, you can add less water. Lotion typically has 70-80% water, so you can add closer to 70% to make it thicker. =) Read more about formulating lotion here: www.soapqueen.com/bath-and-body-tutorials/lotion/how-to-create-homemade-lotion-recipes/
If you’re using rose water instead of distilled water, do you need to heat it or can it be room temperature? Also if you’re using more expensive oils like Marula oil in it does it have to be heated or can you add it after you have heated the Shea butter and before putting in the water?
I have been using Germall plus and it has been fine. Can I use it in place of Phenonip? Also why do you go into the chemistry but still measure in ounces? Grams are so much more consistent and leave less room for error. Thank you for sharing your recipe.
Woooww i love this video.. thank you so much..now i can start making my lotions because i finaly get to understand it a lot better..thanks for being so clear and so informative..GOD BLEESED YOU..
Not trying to be offensive or anything, but can you please make an updated version? Just asking because the camera quality isn't to good in this version. Also, I absolutely LOVE your channel, so keep doing what your doing! Thanks! 😀
great video i have a question when it comes to the preservative and using percentage. I'm using optiphen to preserve my hair lotion and hair spray both i want to be about 8oz.. how do i know how much to use for a particular amount? unclear on how to calculate the usage for preservative. please help me i really don't want to damage my scalp with any growth.
Hi Kimmy8188! You want to use Optiphen around .5-1.5%. To figure that out, you can use a search engine! Simply type "1% of 8 oz" in the search engine. Mine gave me 2.2 grams. Then, I typed "2.2 grams in ounces," which gave me .08 oz, or 2 mL. Then you can use our droppers to easily measure out the mL amounts. Hope that helps! =) Droppers: www.brambleberry.com/Droppers-With-Suction-Bulb-P3802.aspx
I am born with dry skin, and as I am getting older, it is drier. I have purchased a great many commercial lotions, creams, oils, and butters over the years, with the hope their promises of renewed, healthier, blah, blah, blah skin will happen. After looking at number of instructional videos, your video seems to make the most sense to me. I do beliieve I can make a cream, lotion, or butter to drench my skin with the stick-to-the-skin benefits promised by commercial producers. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and how-to. I will be making product for myself soon. One question: What other oils are used in making lotions, creams, or butters?
Hi Terri! So glad you like the tutorial! I hope this lotion helps soothe your dry skin. =) As for which oils to use, it's definitely personal preference! Avocado oil and avocado butter are great to add because they have awesome moisturizing properties. Jojoba oil is another oil known for its moisturizing properties. I would recommend trying out a couple oils and seeing which ones you like best. You can find a list of oils to use in your lotion, and what properties they have, here: www.brambleberry.com/Fixed-Oils-Waxes-C159.aspx You may also like body butter. It is made up of all butters and oils, making it very thick and moisturizing. =) Whipped Body Butter: www.soapqueen.com/bath-and-body-tutorials/lotion/how-to-make-whipped-body-butter-on-soap-queen-tv/ Whipped Champagne Shea Butter: www.soapqueen.com/bath-and-body-tutorials/12-days-christmas-whipped-champagne-shea-butter/
this lotion is the bomb...this is from a guy who made soap at the age of 10 under his mothers watchful eye........and now i'm grown n still love to make things like this! Thanks Anne-Marie
Hello! So happy you enjoyed it! You can absolutely add powders or extracts to your recipe. I would recommend adding the liquid extracts to your oil mixture. In this Kissably Soft Lotion Recipe, several extracts were added: www.soapqueen.com/bath-and-body-tutorials/lotion/kissably-soft-lotion/
Hi, thanks for your recipe, the skin looks amazing !! Only that I have prepared it twice, and every time I get spoiled in a week, I use germal plus the amount of the recipe, I'm confused I do not know what to do ...
How would you go about adding clay to lotion? Pre wet the clay? Some people say it's really hard to preserve clay. I guess the preservative does not disperse evenly in clay?
What 'type' of color is recommended for lotion and what is it called for purchase information? What is NOT recommended? How would I know which works best and which is just off limits for lotion?
Hi Anne Marie, thanks so much for all your great tutorials on soap and lotion and others. I made this recipe two times now and both times the lotion bottles ended up with condensation in the top. I left the lids off overnight in one case and for a full day the 2nd time. Both times condensation. Doesn't the presence of water (in the form of condensation) that has separated from the preservative welcome bacteria and mold? How can this be avoided?
I added my extra left-over lotion to an aluminum tin container. I didn't wash the container or anything, just poured it in. After a few weeks the lotion is turning red. Do you think my lotion in my glass lotion pump bottles will have the same redness? The lotion bottles were boiled and rinsed in bleach water.
If you make anything with water and store it in aluminum or metal it will cause oxidation. This is why you are seeing red develop in your lotion. I bet it's starting to smell like metal too, correct?
Hello Beautiful Lady! This sounds like a an amazing recipe, and it looks luxurious! I have a few questions before making it. I want to add powdered goat milk to the lotion. How would I calculate how much to add? I'm looking forward to hearing from you 😊 Thanks so much and God Bless 🙏
The most informative diy lotion video that I have come across. Thank you very much. I will look into those labels of your just as soon as I'm satisfied with my lotion to give as gifts.
2 Questions, 1: Is it okay to use the stove top on a low setting for heating? I'm not a microwave person and never owned one. 2: If I want more of a whipped look like a moisturizer, how would I achieve that? Are the ingredients used in this example good as a face moisturizer?
Heather Wood Hi Heather! If you are using the stove top, I would recommend putting a pot with boiling water on. Then, top that with a large bowl or pan. Make sure it's large enough that the boiling water isn't touching the bottom of the second pan. That creates a homemade double boiler. =) You can also use our double boiler maker to create one at home: www.brambleberry.com/Double-Boiler-Maker-Double-Boiler-Maker-P3796.aspx This lotion has a creamy, light consistency. If you're looking for a whipped, fluffy lotion, you may like this Whipped Body Butter Tutorial: www.soapqueen.com/bath-and-body-tutorials/lotion/how-to-make-whipped-body-butter-on-soap-queen-tv/ This recipe has a lot of skin-loving oils and would feel great on your face! However, facial skin can be more sensitive, and everyone's is a bit different. I would recommend trying a small dab on your face so you can see what you think. =)
Thank you for the informative video. You mentioned that the shelf life of lotions without preservatives is about 2 weeks when refrigerated. What would you expect the shelf life of a lotion to be if a preservative such as phenonip? Thanks!
+Anna Betancourt You're welcome Anna, thanks for watching. =) With a preservative, the shelf life of your lotion will depend on the oils you use. For instance, if your lotion contains hazelnut oil, which has a shelf life of about 3 months, your lotion will last about 3 months. The oils in this recipe have shelf lives of a year or more, so this should last about a year! Read more about oil shelf lives here: www.soapqueen.com/bath-and-body-tutorials/tips-and-tricks/free-beginners-guide-to-soapmaking-common-soapmaking-oils/
Thank you so much for this very informative video. Can we use polysorbate 80 instead of emulsifying wax? Phenoxy instead of phenonip? And what's the shelf life of this lotion? Also how do we determine the shelf life of any product that we make?
Hi hanks for this video i loved the feel of it, however the cream wasnt coming out the bottle easily, seemed too thick in the bottle but when it came out was nice and soft. What can i do to fix the thickness?
Thank you for being very informative! Trying to make a pain relief lotion for my Mother-In-Law. I want to use CBD isolate. Does each gram need to be calculated in the percentage formula? thank you :)
I recently noticed my DIY lotion turning a little red. But this is only when I add the extra left-over lotion to my metal tin containers. After a couple weeks I noticed it got a little reddish and started to even smell like metal. I still need to check the glass pump bottles to see if it is happening there. In the beginning I was using Phenonip and switched to Liquid Germall Plus. But this happens to BOTH preservatives. So weird. Do you think this can be because the metal tin is dirty? Or perhaps adding more preservative will help it?
I feel like such a failure. I tried this twice. Failed twice. I know what I did wrong the first time; water was not warm enough. But the second time, I thought I had it. Nope. Took forever to blend and I was able to fill the first two bbottles nicely Then it started to separate and get clumpy. Please tell me what I am doing wrong. I really want to make my own soft lotion.
Yes, your presentation was great and answered a lot of questions. Can I use avocado butter instead of avocado oil. I'm thinking probably not because it will change the consistency.
Hi Kay! So happy you like the video! Also, you are correct - because avocado butter is solid versus liquid avocado oil, it will change the consistency and make this lotion a little thicker. You can also leave out the avocado oil and increase the sweet almond oil in this recipe. Both oils are lightweight and moisturizing, so they make good substitutes. =) Sweet almond oil: www.brambleberry.com/Sweet-Almond-Oil-P3205.aspx
Hi I made a batch of this about a month ago and I love it my kids love it and my husband too! I just want to know if I can use cocoa butter in place of the shea butter and have the same results? I also love how detailed you are in your videos too!
So glad you're loving the lotion! You can definitely add cocoa butter to this lotion. Cocoa butter is a bit more firm than shea butter, so it will change the consistently slightly. However, it does add a luxurious moisturizing feeling to the lotion! I would recommend making a small test batch to see what you think. =) Read more about lotion formulation here: www.soapqueen.com/bath-and-body-tutorials/lotion/how-to-create-homemade-lotion-recipes/
This is a wonderful recipe but what I can do if I wish to make it more fluid? Add more water? Reduce the amount of emulsifying wax? Your help is greatly appreciated. As is its kind of heavy or thick to my taste.

my god I still come back to this video I can't believe it's been so long
Made this today. Thank you. No more buying store bought lotion💃🏽
We found the bottles that come with the kit work well, but you can also use tubes if you like!
This is pretty cool.
Curve -Appolis I think Optiphen ND would work well! It's a paraben and formaldehyde free preservative. You can use it at .5-1.5% in your recipe.
We used it in the Argan Oil Shampoo, which feels great on hair: www.soapqueen.com/bath-and-body-tutorials/lotion/sizzling-summer-hair-argan-oil-shampoo/

Awesome thank you so much for your help. I will definitely check out the links that you gave me well thank you again.
This is an ever green recipe. Thanks for sharing, I love your high spirit and smile.
Can you add mica in small amounts to the lotions? Or can you only add mica to products you're going to be rinsing off?
Hi Jeannine!
You can add micas to your lotion! We recommend adding starting out with 1/8 tsp. per pound of lotion and adding more if you want it darker. It also helps to mix your colorant with your fragrance oil before adding it to your lotion. That way it mixes in nicely. =)
So basic formulation of water, oil and emulsifying wax
Made my first batch of lotion today! I knew the batch was more than I needed to try for the first time, but was able to divide up portions and use different fragrances. I will never pay the specialty boutique $14 for a 4oz custom scented lotion again! Trying the emulsified scrub next. :)
+starfishsewing That's awesome! I just love handmade lotion. Have fun making the scrub. Let me know how it turns out! =)

An awesome recipe, thank you! Came out very easy and moisturizing!
I love your sense of humor.
Hi, Ms. Anne Marie
Thank you for sharing this video!
Also, you can absolutely use lavender essential oil in this recipe! Just make sure it's skin safe. You can use our Fragrance Calculator to find out exactly how much to add: www.brambleberry.com/Pages/Fragrance-Calculator.aspx
Thank you so much Ms. Anne Marie! I can't wait to get started. ^-^
***** I appreciate u letting me know because I was worried I overstepped. I love y'all and thanks!

Soooooooooo don't use anything you have a choice. I'm sure your not a scientist so bye!
Do you know of another method of evaluation that is foolproof? If so, please share. What is your idea of how to evaluate natural or other manmade products? Perhaps you prefer the biological consequences of using unpreserved products. It's like you think you have a point, but then refuse to make it.
This video alone has all the information you could need about lotion very informative and interesting!!
yes
Thanks. This is so useful and informative. I watched many DIY videos about lotion and beeswax stuff in the last few days and sometimes I got grossed out when they go about the process as if they're making cookie batter while blabbering about their personal lives. This is very professionally done and from now on I'm sticking with your channel!
+Danielle Stormborn You're welcome Danielle, so glad you enjoy the video! =)
Love this tbt video! Great information and I love the cute hearts in the background :) Thanks for sharing!
So glad you like it! =)
Lovely video. Very informative. What if aloe vera is used as a substitute for water? Will the preservative still be required?
I loved this video and would have purchased from you until you radiated the nutrients by using the MICROWAVE!
Lucy Lux Hi Lucy!
Thank you so much for your feedback! If you like, you can heat your ingredients up using a double boiler. That's what is so awesome about making your own products - you can choose what goes into them, and how to make it! =)
Double boiler maker: www.brambleberry.com/Double-Boiler-Maker-Double-Boiler-Maker-P3796.aspx
*****
I do not own a microwave.
OMG NOT THE MICROWAVE 😩
Lucy Lux how does her method stop you from buying the supplies? If you don’t want to microwave it then don’t 🤦🏽♀️ use the double boiling method...
I love this company. I make my own soap, lotion, body wash and Toner. Im going to start making my own shampoo and conditioners soon. I love learning about essential oils and healthy options.

good video.... very good video , the woman was fluid and informative and I enjoyed this thank you.
Thank you! So glad you liked the video. =)
Am just starting to learn on lotions/creams making. You seems to know well on what you are teaching. Thanks a lot
thank you for sharing this!
Hello!
So glad you enjoyed this video! =)
I’m confused
Why am I not using a preservative in my melt and pour soaps ?
Your videos are so helpful !!
Getting the books 📚 for research 🧐
Great question! The melt and pour soap has a high enough pH level that prevents bacteria growth without a preservative.
She talked about everything under the sun for 6 minutes and 35 seconds.
Hello Bramble berry thanks for this vedio it was so helpful,
But my question is how do I add a lightening powder to it and when do I add that
I tried this lotion, easiest and best recipe ever! Thank you so much for the video!!!😍
I couldn't have asked for a better presentation.
So glad you liked it! =)
and also do vlog about new born babies skin care series. with simple ingredients
Is this lotion oily in any way? does it absorb well into the skin? I make my own body butter but I haven't figured out how to not make it oily and it is hard for the skin to absorb. Let me know ;) Thank you!
I tried this recipe today. It's a little too watery for me, but I enjoyed making it.
Glad you're enjoying that recipe! If you prefer thicker lotion, you can add less water. Lotion typically has 70-80% water, so you can add closer to 70% to make it thicker. =)
Read more about formulating lotion here: www.soapqueen.com/bath-and-body-tutorials/lotion/how-to-create-homemade-lotion-recipes/
Thanks! 😀
+Squidlier Minecraft Thanks so much for the suggestion! We love this fun throwback video. Hope you found it helpful! =)
great video i have a question when it comes to the preservative and using percentage.

Thank you for this video ! And your accent is great !! I'm french and I have no problem to understand each word thank you
You are so welcome! Thanks for watching. =)
As for which oils to use, it's definitely personal preference! Avocado oil and avocado butter are great to add because they have awesome moisturizing properties. Jojoba oil is another oil known for its moisturizing properties. I would recommend trying out a couple oils and seeing which ones you like best.
You can find a list of oils to use in your lotion, and what properties they have, here: www.brambleberry.com/Fixed-Oils-Waxes-C159.aspx
You may also like body butter. It is made up of all butters and oils, making it very thick and moisturizing. =)

Where did you get the lotion bottles from?!😍
this lotion is the bomb...this is from a guy who made soap at the age of 10 under his mothers watchful eye........and now i'm grown n still love to make things like this! Thanks Anne-Marie
So glad you like it! =)
I loved this video and I was wondering if this lotion could be put into a squeeze type tube container and have it come out easily. Thank You
Great video! Can the distilled water be mixed with aloe powder or liquid herbal extracts?
Thank you! I just want to say that your tips have helped me so much over the years in making my own cosmetics!

Please tell me that you finally have a working app for Android! I love your videos!
Thank you Soap Queen! I made your lotion and it’s wonderful! Light, smooth, non greasy product. Thank you!
Hmm, I'm not sure why that's happening! The condensation should go away after 24 hours. How hot are you pouring the lotion?
Is it natural?
Well done soap queen very informative clear precise and easy to understand. Thank you brambleberry you did it again.
Thank you! We don't recommend adding goat milk to lotion since there is no way to prevent the milk from spoiling in the recipe once it is made.
You're so very welcome! Thanks for replying so quickly:) Happy Holidays!
The most informative diy lotion video that I have come across. Thank you very much. I will look into those labels of your just as soon as I'm satisfied with my lotion to give as gifts.
So glad you found the video informative! Thanks for watching. =)
Can we use coconut oil by replacing shea butter? Thanks in advance
Thanks for this lovely recipe. Can I add jojoba oil too by reducing qty of avacado oil or shea butter. Thanks
You can also use our double boiler maker to create one at home: www.brambleberry.com/Double-Boiler-Maker-Double-Boiler-Maker-P3796.aspx
This lotion has a creamy, light consistency. If you're looking for a whipped, fluffy lotion, you may like this Whipped Body Butter Tutorial: www.soapqueen.com/bath-and-body-tutorials/lotion/how-to-make-whipped-body-butter-on-soap-queen-tv/
This recipe has a lot of skin-loving oils and would feel great on your face!
With a preservative, the shelf life of your lotion will depend on the oils you use.
You're welcome Rebecca Walters! Thanks so much for watching. =)
Can I use optiphen?
I really want to make my own soft lotion.
this video is one of the best I had ever watch. pls which oil will I use to produce for someone light in complexion.
What happens if we do not allow the lotions to cool 1 to 2 hours after pouring into containers? Will the lotion be too thick?
Yes, your presentation was great and answered a lot of questions. Can I use avocado butter instead of avocado oil. I'm thinking probably not because it will change the consistency.
Hi Kay!
So happy you like the video! Also, you are correct - because avocado butter is solid versus liquid avocado oil, it will change the consistency and make this lotion a little thicker.
You can also leave out the avocado oil and increase the sweet almond oil in this recipe. Both oils are lightweight and moisturizing, so they make good substitutes. =)
Sweet almond oil: www.brambleberry.com/Sweet-Almond-Oil-P3205.aspx
***** thank you so much! for answering,so many sites post videos and never answer! you are numero uno!
Kay Alameen You are so welcome! =)
Bought homemade lotion from a shop but when I check it lathers ,can you pls tell me why .a dropped a little in water and it lathered like soap
Read more about lotion formulation here: www.soapqueen.com/bath-and-body-tutorials/lotion/how-to-create-homemade-lotion-recipes/
Thank you for your reply!
Yolanda Haynes yes
This is a wonderful recipe but what I can do if I wish to make it more fluid? Add more water? Reduce the amount of emulsifying wax? Your help is greatly appreciated. As is its kind of heavy or thick to my taste.
Joan Belmont try checking out humblebee and me! She has great information on making lotion!
Laura Kang thank you Laura! I will check.
Try adding more water and reduce the wax. Also replace the shea butter with a liquid oil
What can I use instead of stearic acid and Rokonsal instead of Phenonip? Nice video!!
Soothing video! Although I would hope you could use natural and safe preservative
