so.... the St. Trina sword's sleep buff going away when attacked was apparently a bug, and it got patched in 1.6. Wonder if that means the swords are good at building up sleep now.

Props for once again blowing me away. The effort you put into these videos deserves way more recognition.
I was wondering where all of the creativity went in the PVP meta and his explanation about a lot of players just copying the builds from much bigger channels honestly explains a lot.
i appreciate it a lot i put in a ton of work into what i do mostly because its just fun to me, im a regular college student and imma keep doing it until its no longer fun. comments like yours tho are also why i keep making stuff :)

As a game dev I can provide some insight here, and as a game dev I can say it's incredibly unlikely it has anything to do with hitboxes.
Reasoning: To my knowledge it's impossible to phantom hit an offline enemy (such as Varre) so hitboxes have nothing to do with it.
The reason this happens is because of Peer to Peer networking. The connection between 2 players is divided by 3 servers, the Host, the Visitor, and the Receiver. (Not what they're called in the profession, but terminology isn't important now)
The Host and the Visitor send information to the Receiver which then updates both player's screens.
The reason phantom hits exist is because:
If the Host lands a hit on their screen, it needs confirmation that the Visitor was also hit on their screen before the Receiver will update both players.
BUT, if the Host applies a status effect, the Receiver only needs confirmation that the Host hit to update the Visitor as well.
The reason as to why they chose this output is a different and longer discussion.
The youtuber here is just ignorant of things said by fromsoft in the past , the only reason status effects still applie and allways have is that to combat lag rolls dont negate status same effect in pools of status since demon souls .
@@Chevalier_knight room temp IQ take here bud, the phantom hitboxes work OFFLINE as well. Regular enemies like dogs or soldiers will have phantom hitboxes if you kill them but keep attacking. You assume i am only referring to the online portion which is wrong because it can happen OFFLINE, i am also a game dev as well and one thing ive noticed is that if your character dies OFFLINE to someone who is hitting you with a weapon that has status build up, that status will keep building up even when you are dead, the lingering hitbox is a result of your character being in a “dead” state but not disabling the hitbox from allowing status effects to be built up. im well aware of what latency is but this issue clearly still happens in places with none.

@@syrobe i had always assumed it was a networking issue. Didn’t realize that phantom status effect build up could occur offline.
@@syrobe buildup while dying and the phantom buildups are different situations, if you wanna be fair try to get bleed buildup while rolling in pve, but what ghost said has been the consensus for like at least 4 previous games now and that example has yet to disprove it
Good enough. The discovery of status scaling with Arcane weapons are worthy of further exploration. Could these weapons surpass the other status effects? Sure Bleed probably won’t see the best option, but will these method surpass the frost hatchet? Or dual Scarlet rot weapons like the straight sword or Erdtree Avatar rotten staff?
It's not necessarily a discovery lol. But you are right about there being much more to figure out. Not enough people are being creative in the Elden Ring PVP meta right now because of Bleed (ROB) and Bloodhound Step.
If it was the DS2 PVP community there would have been tons of Saints roaming around already. Imo you can't really call a status effect bad until you've made a whole playthrough and character that's build revolves solely around it. If you limit yourself to primarily focusing on those kinds of effects and weaponry/items that complement it. You'll be able to see their strengths and weaknesses much more clearly than others. When you do things like this you come up with more innovative ways to utilize and improve what you have. Like the uploader did here.

Wow, I've wanted a sleep build for so long, and the swords and crossbows always seemed lame. This, however, is exactly what I've been looking for. 👍
I always use sporific grease just cause the purple aesthetic, then I started thinking I could make use of it, I heard about the arcane scaling with the ripple weapons but never found confirmation that the scaling would actually enhance the effectiveness of sleep grease, this video confirmed everything I needed to know, now to respec again.

might be an unpopular idea but it’d be really cool to see you try and optimise a thorn sorcery build, since they’re some really cool spells that could maybe be used alongside a regular bleed build. great video as always dude
The aoe around you is fun because it can be chain cast from other spells and can be great when people are on your ass but otherwise they are not worth using

I did my own research, determined that the halberd is the best weapon for sleep that scales with arcane.
But it's nice to see the research around other options.

phantom hits actually arent from hitboxes, its from the discrepancy between which players game it calculates for an attacks damage landing or an attacks status landing being different

@@syrobe theyre less of a problem the better the connection and thats just how its been coded since ds1 they havent ever had a "serverside" interpretation so it uses each player's game separately, either way its way more reasonable than thinking that status effects ignore s or use a bounding box as a hitbox or something lol

easy way to farm the grease:
root resin at warmasters shack 3 left of the grace (you can get up to 3 per root)
farm the jellyfish at appostate derelict for st trinas lilies (8% droprate at 100 item discovery)
been rocking this for weeks its nasty af.

I see u with the KH menu sfx so GOATED
By far my favorite build has been a light equip load Ripple Halberd character- since it's pure physical damage, the Blue Dancer Talisman works pretty well with it, and especially now that light rolling is super fast!

One thing you can do is also apply sleep resin on your weapon as it does also apply on the Crossbow for some reason
Sporific grease is the "sleep resin"

Finally someone mentioning that Arcane also effects sleep. It is so often forgotten and the reason I never used Trina's Sword because it is for some reason an Intelligence weapon.
Can't wait for the DLC and the Arcane Katanas with sleep build-up!

The one thing that I'd work on in this video, and every subsequent video for that matter, is providing links to all the music you use in your videos. It doesn't matter that much for general quality, but for those of us who seek them out, it's an invaluable resource that immediately bumps up respect and likeliness to watch again.

The phantom hits thing was present in ds3 as well. Its what made frost mallet pvp viable.
At this point it'd be weird to play of it ever got fixed.
Sleep leads to a backstab which is nice you have to wait till the target shakes their head to get the backstab

Any arcane build can make good use of sleep pots too. Put them on your belt and your mimic will chuck them at bosses without consuming them too

Ayyyy ripple halberd with sleep grease. I just started doing this with the flame of frenzy. Max cast speed on that is super quick so if you aren't dying to my ripples you get a spicy flame. People also don't realize just how far you can arc Flame of Frenzy to so they are facing cc at range and melee.
Also, statuses have literally always gone through dodge roles in souls games. It's practically a feature at this point.

I’ve literally had these at +25 since my first played through and they’re amazing the Halbert that Asher War on it is so good for PVP it’s insane and the best thing to do is the fake out don’t show the Halbert woke up with you no sorry to say Trina’s or something else and then when you invade can you get ganged up on by three people switch to the Halbert and do the age of war in numeric all three of them with three hits without grease

Feels bad cuz the first video I saw of this build was from rage gaming. Thanks for going in depth now I know how greases work
this is basically identical to my build except I use drawstring grease on the right hand halberd for even more buildup (gotten 1 l2 sleeps before). well that and I swap to bleed/poison on the right while they are asleep for a little extra damage, so drawstrings speed is useful for that.
Sleep was my favorite subject in school.
