Damn i feel old Back in the dota 1 days, giving control of the courier also meant giving control of your hero (xD) When the courier died, the items it carried would drop to the ground and could be destroyed by opponent (ZSMJ famously lost a sacred relic like that) The side shop had like only 3 items at the beginning, and one of these 3 was Bottle. You had to manually buy each component of an item to assemble it, and component were split into like 10 different shops displaying a dozen items each Trees would respawn every 5 (or 10?) minutes no matter what, do you could get stuck in the trees if you walked by as they respawned. Neutrals left corpses after dying, and those corpses would block the camps from respawning. Glyph didn't make buildings immune to damage (let alone the creeps), instead it would give +999999 armor so you could still destroy a tower 1 damage at a time Dota 2 is definitly a better game I predict outposts to be removed next, nobody seem to care about them, i don't even know what they do
outposts might not be the best idea, I don't know, I haven't studies the idea well enough. But what I do know is that they offer some other thing than just "highground" inside of jungles that can make a team superior to the other. I don't think they're broken, and usually when something isn't strictly broken, it will always remain in dota. That's how it is.
As a Supp/Offlane, I miss the side shop. Being able to build Arcane boots without risking your life/waiting for courier is a blessing as a support. Also, sneakily buying Blink Dagger at the side shop has helped me escape multiple deaths, and making the safe lane cry with dagger + echo at 9-10mins lmao
I started to play dota 2 again recently and I was quite surprised to find the side shops removed, multiple couriers, outposts, neutral items, a new place for Rosh, and such.

Did no one remember when there only one bounty rune spawn, and the one pick it get the gold?? I really miss that, lvl 1 rune war is always happens, and taking bounty as support is bound to get blamed.
Two months ago I made a reddit post about the changes that happened from every single TI to the next. Essentially, the number of significant changes from TI9 to TI10 was about the same as the number for everything before that. The title of the post was "Changes between TIs" if anyone's interested.
Roshan had 3 different locations over the time. One was where the iconic "nobody has ever done that in the history of dota" moment happened, one was where the iconic "it's a disastah" moment happened and lastly, where he is located rn where some iconic plays also happened like OG vs LGD game 5 where ana's ember won them the fight after buying back
I know this video is a bit older now, but I wanted to add some context to the multiple couriers. This was originally introduced in HoN (Heroes of Newerth) as a way to make the game less toxic and easier. HoN was significantly more punishing than Dota 2, in that the average GPM of a free farming carry was about 350, and kills were significantly less gold. It would be common for supports to end the game with boots, bracer, wand and nothing else, as Obs and Sent wards both cost gold (100 each) and killing wards did not give gold. This meant that the laning phase was incredibly challenging and hugely impactful to the outcome of the match. In Dota 2 there was a saying "the laning phase doesn't matter" because there were so many ways to recover if you died a few times in the lane. HoN did not have those comeback mechanics (it had a few but they were less impactful) so laning was everything. As an aside, jungle creeps were significantly stronger and not accessible to most heroes without lifesteal early on. When laning in Dota 2 - you generally purchase items and consumables. Consumables being healing items like potions etc. When there was only 1 courier, you could not get more items to your lane for a very long time. This means that heroes which scale with levels were significantly stronger than heroes which scale with items. It also meant that you could 100% shut down a carry. This means, if you are hurt, you must go back to the base. You could not send out more items to heal up. This would lead to you having less experience, and less gold. When multiple couriers were introduced the whole game shifted in HoN - and Dota 2 followed suit. The idea now was to continually transfer healing items to your lane so you can get all of the experience and continue to last hit creeps. If the enemies use all their mana, you send out 2 potions and heal right back up. This change was originally so impactful that teams were trying to abuse it by sharing consumables. This has been deemed too powerful and nerfs across the board have happened. Buying your mid a bottle, then sending out your own regen isn't possible due to bottle prices increase. Giving tangos have cooldowns, mana potions last longer so they are easier to remove, etc. Overall I personally think it was a good change for the game. Yes, it makes the game easier. Yes, there's no value to killing the enemy couriers now (previously if you killed the 1 courier their whole team couldn't use it). And Yes - it makes the game much more friendly. The toxicity level for the couriers was crazy, and I'm glad we each get our own now.
I still remember the old Roshan, and also the creep mountain, I loved pulling the creeps there as Dark Seer ♥ Oh memories of old, I tried getting back into Dota and got massive whiplash from the map being so different, amongst many other things.

the side shops were more useful when we had roughly one curier per team. it helped reduced the demand a little.
I still remember Syllabear has a size model that cover the whole lane, and Broodmother is just a big spider in the lane.
I do really like old side shop system, it make me feel the world is more alive than current system.
I miss when fountain was the same ground level as the base. You could just put a ward and hook everyone out of there. Sadge

Excellent writing.
"Mona Lisa of MOBAs"
As someone who has been playing only after 5 couriers and 3 backpack slots, imagining trying to play the game without those gives me anxiety.
Remember when bottle can be refilled at base while the courier carries it
I really miss sideshops. They filled sidelanes with life, that shopkeeper, the fan of dota over you fighting an enemy
"you don't deserve to win"
Proceeds to lock six branches on the courier*
i remember stealing tomes from people when they try to use the courier to give it to them. you were able to move some teammates items and drop them on the ground. free xp. im glad we all have coureirs now cause i was extremely toxic back then. and still will if we didn't have couriers
2:58 Sideshops pointless to add back in since everyone has a courier now
God I remember having click battles trying to get my items delivered vs a guy who wanted to get his bottle back to base.
They should add a buyable backpack slot. Like 10,000 money to use 1 backpack slot since late game carries have so much money. 30,000 for 3 backpack slots. 9 slot carry = gg
I also remember there was sometimes that ******** who just bought a courier and kept it in their inventory so we should play without it...
