I would love a series where you circle back and check in on these people and how they are doing now with their budget, savings goals, debt repayment ❤️ amazing video. Thank you!
I’d encourage her to check out free coding resources online, like W3 schools, for example. They offer free tutorials on programming languages like Python, Java, and C, plus other things like HTML, CSS, AND SQL. When she’s ready, she can take an exam (for a fee) to obtain a certificate (or certificates). The cost is significantly less than the coding course would be. Saying this as someone who looked at a coding bootcamp through a well-known university, but it would have cost well over $10,000. I’m going this route instead, encouraged to by my software engineer husband.
I would suggest that she waits until after she moves and maybe extend out another 12 months before she buys a car. New York has good public transportation. Car insurance is very expensive and off the street parking is not cheap.
Another great Real People Budget. This is a great example of how splitting up your payments, properly, can afford you to split up your paychecks to better accommodate your bills. I struggled with that in the beginning. Now, we're a month ahead and our due dates better accommodate our pay schedule.
Diane you need to look into applying for some educational scholarships ASAP. There are always a lot of programs for single Moms, especially tech. Miko has given some amazing tips. Don’t let them fall on deaf ears!

Thanks Miko! I'm trying to balance debt payoff, savings and investing so it was helpful to hear your recommendations on how to approach balance between goals!
I am pretty sure that she and most financial advisors would say pay off debt before worrying about investing because you are not going to earn in interest in your investments what you are paying in interest. Knock out that debt after you have an emergency fund and then you can focus on saving and investing
I would call that 10,000 the emergency fund and NOT use if for a coding course. She could probably get scholarships to cover at least some of that course. Also - 20K seems really high for a medical coding course (I assume that's the coding we are talking about?) - most would be around 3-5K. There is alot of extra she could cut in the budget for a short time (less than a year) - get rid of eating out, beauty, Spotify, RUclips TV (you can get regular RUclips for free), vacation savings. I have never spent $700 for a birthday - children will be happy with a simply fun celebration and simple gifts. $150 for a planner? Target sells beautiful ones for like $20. I would go bare bones for about a year and knock out all the debt. I personally did this for over 2 yrs and paid off 6 figures of student loans.
The coding course is most likely a computer programming course. There are a lot of coding bootcamps that cost around 20K. The problem is that some boot camps are scams, so I hope she is doing her research. I'd rather do the free courses online. I'm a software engineer, and there are a ton of good free resources.
I would never rely on child support. If they are offsetting his refund, the lump sum could come…or he could have been smart enough to adjust his withholding and she gets $0 as he no longer has a refund coming. Sometimes it’s a “one and done” type thing once their refund gets offset the first time.
She's been a single mom for 12 years it's highly unlikely that it would be a one and done thing at this point. She feels it's reliable enough to include, and considering that she excludes her freelance income because it isn't reliable I think she knows her situation.
@@kellseitrendafilov688 Yeah it's possible, just like some people don't pay their taxes. The government usually catches up to them eventually, but it can take years.
I dated a guy who illigeally had HALF of his wages garnished. One week after garnishment he only recieved $200 for 40 hours! He was forced to work under the table jobs an additional 30hrs a week to make ends meet
This was the first one of these that I’ve seen and it was incredibly useful and well presented. Thank you so much! I look forward to learning more from you and being able to get your planner system. Brilliantly done. Greetings & appreciation from London. 😊
The thing I love about watching this channel is you don’t even really need the planner. I’m sure she appreciates the support but she doesn’t bar off any of her tools or pages within her videos and you honestly walk away from the channel with a full budget management system that you can track in a notebook or spreadsheet. I just seriously appreciate the transparency here
Great budget except I would split the rent and some of the sinking funds, especially groceries, between the 2 paychecks. It’s very easy to spend cash in the beginning of the month and be left with zero in a few weeks.
This was very helpful. I would like more videos that show this type of example of trying to decide which goals to save for when they are all around the same time line.
I would love to see the live rich planner and the budget by paycheck digital versions in a GoodNotes digital planner with a landscape and portrait layout.
I am in the negative. I have a mortgage, i know i need 2nd income. I want to find another. I work full time , sometimes i am required to be on call, plus i have coughing fits. I want to improve no more struggles. I am looking for simple budget ideas, but I am the deer caught in the headlights when I think about budget, jobs etc.
Buying a vehicle, buying a home, and moving to another state don't seem to be realistic goals given her income and location. She's benefiting from some low income benefits (e.g. rent) so she should continue to utilize those. She should focus solely on the coding course and eliminating cc debt.
Electric, water, and gas in that order. Unless the internet is necessary for school/work, drop it for now. Set up fixed monthly payment plans. That saved me plenty of times when my electric skyrocketed. Then pay a little more on the highest till they are all caught up.
Can you contact the companies and see if they can help you get a better rate and/or some payment assistance or plan? You can also check with other companies and see if they can offer you a better rate. I need to do this too.
Thank you for this video Miko:)! I'm not sure if I missed it or you didn't mention whether to pay the student loan while there is no interest or to wait for the forgiveness to be approved?? If anyone knows please comment, thank you😊💛
Great question - I’m wondering the same. For my personal situation, I’m holding off on paying. Though it’s in my budget for July. Since there is no back pay interest, I’m deciding to put my income to better use - savings! And that way the money is there to tackle the loan debt if it comes time.
No mention was made of an emergency fund or savings. Is she supposed to be dipping into her sinking funds for that? Those should be separate from sinking funds.
I also live in New York I live in the Bronx she can lower cell phone by more than 50% by switching to Boost Mobile. I am paying $40 a month and that includes unlimited talk, text and data
I would put the car goal on a longer time frame. Because it is more than just buying the car. Insurance is very high & off- street parking is very high. New York has one of the best public systems of Transportation. Right now I don't think that she would utilize her car enough to justify the added monthly expenses. It's better to wait til 12 months after she moves...imho

This! I've worked with men who got lower paying jobs to avoid support as well. That's not reliable at all. 😬

So it is possible for someone to not pay child support? That’s insane to not take accountability and so sad.

The coding course seems incredibly expensive given there are other online coding courses and certificates you can take for far less.
Wondering if this is because of her location?
@@alyssaf.08 Nope. The only thing that can really make that difference is between the needed certification and an associates degree.
