@@MikeBarnesDrums He does used a tom hit as part of the main groove on quite a few tunes. Dreams is one and Everywhere he puts a single tom hit in front of the snare. The Live Official Video shows it well. Not always on the and of 3 and 4 like your video but same concept.
If you're working out an existing pattern in a song, listen and work it out and/or read it. If creating your own, go with what you think will work, try different versions and settle on what you think works best! Cheers.
