  • In this video, I will show you how to propagate bay leaf cuttings in water in early spring. Rooting Bay Laurel (Laurus Nobilis) cuttings in water is an easy process where you start with taking cuttings off the bay leaf tree.
1 - So, the first step is to take off the cuttings.
2 - The next step is to remove most of the leaves from the cuttings leaving just two top leaves.
3 - The third step is to cut off the bottom bit of the stems.
4 - Next step is to cut the tips of the leaves and dip the stems in cinnamon powder (as a rooting hormone).
5 - Put all cuttings in a masons jar or suitable plastic container 3/4 filled with clean water.
6 - Looking after your cuttings: Keep the jar indoors, near the window, changing the water twice a week. Once a week you can add to water some homemade rooting hormone to soak for an hour. Change to clean water after the soak. See how to do homemade rooting hormone in my previous video:
    • Homemade Rooting Hormo... with detailed info and photos here: fignut.com/homemade-rooting-h...
7 - In about 8 to 10 weeks, the small roots should emerge.
I will show you the progress of these cuttings in one of my next videos. Rooted cuttings should be featured then.
More info on a growing bay leaf (Bay Laurel) from cuttings in water, the whole process with photos, details, and progress updates will be at my website in the next few days: fignut.com/

About 8 months ago you reported 50% perished.
Have you actually potted any of the survivors?
    And…
After this experience, which is best specifically for bay leaf cuttings, water rooting or going to sandy soil for rooting?
    Thanks for sharing your experience.

unfortunately, i did not follow up with update video - i left it for too long and eventually lost the footage. i remember about 50% were succesfull. they were potted and given away to friends and neghbours. for bay leaves i had similar success with other rooting techniques. my preference is rooting in water as for me it is easier to follow what is going on. the trouble with bay leaves is that the whole process lasts much longer then for example figs or lavander, it takes 3-4 months, depending on temperature. so, patience is important as well as changing water regulary.. right now, i am rooting bay leaves from seeds, which also takes very long (similar) time. however, i did not take any footage this time.. i suggest you to try all possible techniques and work out which one works the best for your circumstances.. i hope this helps.. thank you for watching :)

Why did you cut part of the leaf off?

    • @ellavonbuskirk2928

For the first little while after you snip a plant, before it grows roots, having too many leaves can pull too many nutrients into sustaining the leaves instead of building roots, so snipping some of the leaves (leaving enough for photosynthesis) can force the plant to build roots in order to survive, instead of just keeping the existing leaves alive
