  • Learn how to propagate plants like a pro with this simple to build plant propagation frame that is perfect for rooting softwood cuttings and some semi-hardwood cuttings. This Nearing frame is a huge step up from the plastic totes and bins that we've been using and your success rate will go through the roof with this propagation frame.
    In this video we'll prepare the cuttings of English Laurel and stick them in the propagation frame. I'll talk about rooting hormone, watering, heat build up in the frame, air flow, and humidity.

    Cold water can hold more dissolved oxygen than warm water and fresh water can hold more dissolved oxygen than salt water. The maximum amount of DO(dissoled oxygen) that the water can hold is called the saturation value. It’s possible, and very often desired, especially in a greenhouse-to exceed the natural saturation point of DO in water. This is called super-saturation.

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  5 лет назад +1

      I hate to be the bearer of bad news but japanese maples don't do well from cuttings. The roots tend to be weaker and they take longer to grow. The rooting success rate is poor as well. I highly recommend growing root stock from seed and then grafting known cultivars onto the root stock. You'll get a much healthy and better growing tree in the long run.

    You have a nice setting in a green house for propagation. In Alberta, we can get -40C...so could I successfully clone cuttings inside? Would I need a box-like situation with a lid? You can use a plastic tote, I just really like the wood box setup and have had tremendous success with it. I actually rooted these cuttings in summer. You can root plenty of plants in your climate but make sure they are cold hardy to your area so they can stand up to the cold winter months.

    Hi Mike, Big Fan! Quick Question. I have cut the cuttings and have them in long window box type container approx 50. Am I right in saying that being July in Ireland that I put them in the Greenhouse for 6 weeks to root and then transplant them into 2 Litre Pots and can I put these pots outside then for the winter to grow once rooted and put into the new pots and will they grow outside over the autumn and winter or are they best kept in a Greenhouse throughout the Autumn and Winter?

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  4 года назад

      Just follow all the steps I took in this series and you'll see what I did. I like to root them and then let them sit in the same frame and medium through the winter, then I pot them up in late winter/early spring while dormant but just before breaking dormancy.

    The cells in the roots absorb oxygen from the water in the soil. If the soil is well aerated the water in the soil will absorb oxygen from the air. If the soil is waterlogged the air will diffuse in much more slowly because there is less surface area.

      I love laurel, it's large, green, waxy leaves are absolutely beautiful and make a great hedge. The drawbacks depend on your objective. They get really big if left unpruned and are hard to get rid of once established (if you ever wanted to dig them up or plant something different. With dip and grow and comparable powder root hormones, I've had 95% effective rate with laurel, just leaving 2 leaves, 12" or so, even stuck right in fence line, soil material doesn't matter to much... Skinning the lower couple inches to turn to root, dipping, setting, in small pods... Don't think about it just do it. wait 6 months for them to grow, and plant.

    I tried sand and dip it on dip n grow and never rooted. Too bad I’m just gonna buy the 🌱 plant.

      Don't give up so easy, you may be one try away from success.

    So yeah you will see me a lot. lol. What is the best time of the year to propagate cuttings? When should I collect cuttings?

      I don't mind. Different plants root under different conditions so it would be better to pick a specific plant you want to root and then ask about that plants specific requirements.

    I don't know why they call it English Laurel this plant is actually native to Iran only (lest it grows in the wild (feral) in South east Europe and Turkey but it's not native there)

      Interesting. It sure did find a great home in the cooler climates, stuff grows like crazy!

    wont watering them so soon rinse away the rooting chemicals off

      No, it's just meant to soak in the hormone for about 7 seconds. I also let them sit in the frame for 30 to 60 minutes before watering. Everything good that happens, happens in that time frame. Thanks for asking.

    Like the content .. but not the repetitive and super exaustive delivery

      Thanks for the critique. I explain everything so thoroughly because I get so many questions about all the fine details over and over again so I try to include everything I can think of that will answer the questions so that people can be successful at this right away. The funny thing is, I usually get questions that I already answered in the video because people don't watch the whole video, lol. It's a catch 22.

    May have good information, but the delivery for me is obnoxious.
    Yelling and repeating the same thing over and over.
    No offense, just some constructive criticism that you can take or leave.

      I'm not classically trained in the fine art of video production but that's the beauty of RUclips. Thanks for the criticism.
