I feel like the metaphor goes along with the line "love i see you now." It's a story about how their love and relationship is like being hit by a train. Losing your way and ultimately getting hit by it- gateway to euphoria

That would make a lot more sense than my interperetation, that being that the singer is hit by a train and dies, meeting his dead lover in the afterlife
I attributed waking up in the dark as depression, which could have stemmed from losing the life of his love, whom he reunites with in death after being hit by a train.
Maybe not what he intended, eh?

I don't know anything about writing or playing music, but I really like Underground. I never considered that it could be a metaphor-- I just listened and took the lyrics literally-- just a fun lil' song about a person getting hit by a train that showed you don't need a deep message for a song to sound so amazing or have so many people involved in producing it. My favorite part of the song, besides the key shift(?) with the reveal and suddenly changed vibe, is the foreshadowing so early on with the whistle. It's like when you reread a book and catch details you didn't the first time and you get to experience it with new eyes

Going to college as a non music major I lost touch with my musical background, but your songs have brought my passion for music back to life. I’m teaching myself piano again and joined my schools’s symphony band back on my main instrument (french horn). The high attention you give the horns in your songs is just so incredible, not many people use them to their potential but saying you write amazing horn parts is a stark understatement. Clarinet player here; I love your voice, it trapped me at the start...but that masterful buildup with the orchestra to sound like a train was not lost on me, and it's one thing that makes me replay the song constantly. Goosebumps every time.
(also might just be that I'm quick minded or that I have a tiny dove who sounds like a very tiny train, but the sung "ooouuwooo" hit me as very train whistle like the first time I heard this song especially with the orchestra building a train and the lyric visuals)

as a hs trombone player that doppler made me just do a lil happy dance, I can only imagine how fun itd be to do for real
and as a college English major now the open-metaphor you describe is really really interesting because it can be personal, or relationship, or historical moment or even general zeitgeist... this is like take-off-into-space music, pure adrenaline and euphoria even if deep down you know you might not come back

I genuinely do not know how I can express how your music makes me feel. Caves and Underground made me ball my eyes out because of how beautiful the orchestration was. It genuinely made my soul ascend out of my body and like it’s such an overwhelming feeling that makes you smile so bright that your heart fills with so much from the music. I was so grateful that you broke down the music for us so we can hear the different parts of the orchestra. I’ve been trying to make an orchestral piece that also mixes with pop music and for a while I’ve just been trying to listen to each part by ear over and over again. It is a dream of mine to learn from your music and hopefully create a piece where the soul sings. Someday… Know that your music moves people and you have moved me to start making orchestral pieces. Thank you ❤️❤️

My favourite reimagining so far out of the symphony sessions. The orchestra and all the little details you put in there are like little pieces of candy. I love how they are different but complement the song so well. Also, the caves section leading into the song, amazing. :D Can't stop listening!

I didn't realize all the influence you had on me through TikTok till I found this song. Now I'm utterly obsessed and writing a script to a short film wrapped around this song!! You're the type of person I aspire to work with one day! Blown away.

I would absolutely love an orchestra version of this song! No vocals, just the full song with orchestra! Insane! You are amazing!
