Dr. Marlene Winell is a psychologist and author of Leaving the Fold: A Guide for Former Fundamentalists and Others Leaving Their Religion. She is a pioneer in the field of religious trauma, having worked in religious recovery for over 30 years, and she originated the term “Religious Trauma Syndrome.”
After I read her book and attended one of her retreats, Dr. Winell became my friend and mentor. She has spoken at each of my Conferences on Religious Trauma, as well as made a guest appearance at the Shameless Sexuality: Life After Purity Culture conference in October of 2022.
In this episode, we discuss the dangers of Christian Nationalism, the fear of Coming Out to religious family members, what happens at her retreats, and more.

General timestamps: @1:47 Marlene Jesus freak. @2:53 education. @5:25 losing an imaginary relationship. @9:18 professional therapists might not understand religious trauma syndrome... creation of the RTS diagnosis. @14:53 developmental delays affecting critical thinking. @17:14 guide to coming out as atheist/non-believer. @25:07 religious recovery retreat in MA December 8-11, 2022. @27:46 leaving Jesus documentary. @31:56 religious trauma syndrome diagnosis similar to PTSD. @33:49 domestic violence via religion. @40:50 homeschooling/brainwashing. @42:30 Marlene coming out to family. Like they yell in the movies, instead of wetting their pants, while flying through the air in a 3000 pound vehicle that in normal gravity would, upon impact, explode into pieces, but which instead will land safely, allowing the occupants to continue the probably lousy movie's narrative .... "Wooo Hooo!" Thank you Marlene.
