Joachim Trier's DVD Picks

- Ten years ago, with the release of his debut film REPRISE, a spirited drama about two young aspiring novelists, Norwegian filmmaker Joachim Trier emerged as one of the most interesting new voices in European cinema. His follow-up effort OSLO, AUGUST 31ST, made five years later, reimagined Louis Malle’s 1966 French character study THE FIRE WITHIN in the context of contemporary Norway. Both of Trier’s first two films were melancholy meditations concerned with existential questions of love, ambition, memory, and identity, as well as intimate experiments combining a punk ethos with poetic refinement. And with his latest film, the English-language drama LOUDER THAN BOMBS, which opened this week, Trier has tackled his most challenging effort to date. He paid us a visit to chat about directing, filmmakers who inspire him, and even stepped into our DVD and Blu-ray closet to highlight some favorite films.

"Has anyone ever done the whole closet? Because I want all of them."
Same. Same.
This guy articulates his thoughts about these films so well and seems very intelligent and charming.
+Zach Sutton A very talented director (Reprise, Oslo, August 31st, Louder Than Bombs) who knows his films (his interviews are also delightful to read) and is also quite handsome. My kind of man.
He is very charming and talented indeed. I interviewed him recently, such a sweet guy
Yes particularly what he said about Mishima and Phantom Carriage
He's a dope.
I love the enthusiasm people have when they get to do this. Just goes to show, they're fans as much as they are artists.
The fan/expert is such an appealing person. Like Roger Ebert was.

+Stefan Ristea welcome to youtube.
It's nice here

La Jetee, Sans Soleil - Chris Marker
The Phantom Carriage - Victor Sjoskberg

all that jazz is the greatest film of all time period
You left out experimental horror film House (1977) from Nobuhiko Obayashi @2:24.
It's Victor Sjöstrom.
How has this son of a bitch never seen HAUSU??
*The Emigrants, Jan Troell
Trier is so articulate in his language. Knows his stuff.
What a likeable, engaging, eloquent presence! His movies are awesome too, Thelma is a personal favorite.
The Worst Person in the World was AMAZING, thank you so much for making that film!
When he grabs that copy of House and says "What is this film? I've heard about this." I was immediately like dude, prepare to have your mind fucking blown! Man I wish I could re-watch that one for the first time.
Absolutely love his films, really hope Oslo, August 31st (my all time favourite film so far) could be added to the Criterion collection someday!
+zasddsaf Oslo is a really good film but all-time favorites?.... Nah.
+Jerry Incandenza Oslo, August 31st is a infinite jest of gloom. Sure, a top film on the decade.
Cream Syndicate Lol. I beg to differ but I see what you did there :)
zasddsaf watch The Fire Within by Louis Malle
@@starsareangels How can you possibly say that someone saying a particular film is a favorite of theirs (a totally subjective thing) is wrong? Taste in films doesn't follow some universal and homogenous set of criteria. What is wrong with you?
I'm loving the attention all that jazz is being given in recent years
"What is this film? I've... I've heard about this."
*picks Hausu*
You're gonna have some fun, buddy.
+Simon William Davidson pretty sure he was kidding.
Charles-David Roc
o reilly?
I would love a follow up from him. Hausu is not the best film ever made, but it it the greatest film ever made for me.
@@michaelenglish1992 that's a fantastic way to put it
So happy for this guy! Best Original Screenplay fully deserved!
HIGH AND LOW is one of my all time FAVORITES!
Had to revisit this one in honor of his work officially entering the collection. I suppose it’s about time for that 2.0 video.
I love his films, can't wait for Louder Than Bombs. And he's super handsome and eloquent, too *sigh*...
Get him and Michael Fassbender into the same room. MAKE IT HAPPEN!
Oh yes that Well be so awesome 😎🖖🏽
Fassbender saying he loves Fassbinder.
he even sounds like him
Great filmmaker. Will have to look into his picks. I think we might have a new record holder for "most filled bag".
Didn't know Michael Fassbender was such a film buff.
Thanks to Joachim, I'll be watching The Phantom Carriage soon. Sounds like right up my alley.
Love it when filmmakers show why they love movies. Makes me want to watch their films.
I will never tire of these.
I agree about Eric rohmer. I've been watching clips of his work on the daily. I have little discoveries each time. Most times the dialogues, sometimes the colors, the actor's expressions, definitely the wit and wisdom
XD his reaction to picking up House. Hope he picked it, he'll be in for a ride
Louder Than Bombs deserved more love than it got (well, some critics loved it, but the overall reception was pretty mixed). His films Reprise & Oslo August 31st are, of course, masterful.
This guy loves cinema. I can’t believe I haven’t seen any of his work yet!
i am dying to listen to this great filmmaker talk about films all day long
Mishima was INCREDIBLE. Thanks to Criterion for doing this series and introducing me to that one.
I thoroughly enjoyed "LouderThanBombs". Great cast and great directing.
he seems so happy for a guy who shot oslo
Rip Michael Cimino
Handsome man. We need a part two. Great picks!
I've not seen his films, but his pulling out The Phantom Carriage and praising Claire Denis and the perfection of High & Low has me intrigued.
Can you allow Scorsese and Pta to do one of these. Also criterion, can you PLEASE put Punch drunk love and After Hours on the criterion collection.
+rybrentmannftw I would literally pay a hundred bucks for a decent blu-ray release of Punch Drunk Love :(
After Hours is also great tho.
So underrated. Adam Sandlers only good movie imo even though I'll admit I enjoy some his shitty comedies from the 90's. I'd love to see The Master get a release as well.
+rybrentmannftw scorcese no thanks.
pilj50 Why not?
+pilj50 After Hours? Yes please!
Du er en norsk helt, Joachim!
Who else is revisiting this after watching The Worst Person in the World?
I love all his picks. Super good taste! Not surprising he makes cool movies. 🔥
It's amazing how many people pull out All That Jazz!! Fosse's Lenny is amazing. Too bad he didn't make more films.
Finally someone giving Heaven's Gate due credit.. it is criminally underated
this guy is the best kind of film nerd there is. love his work
i've seen a lot of these films that he picked but i still feel like i've barely cracked the surface of cinema.
+thevoid99 I would consider that a good thing. I love having the feeling that there's no end to the vast ocean of cinema. There's always something else to watch over the horizon.
It pays to be tall when stepping into the Criterion Closet!! ;)
I love these Closet Picks videos; it's always very funny to see just how MUCH a person gets to carry away in the end: Trier bagged like 20 movies or something; Kim Cattrall, on the other hand, settled for a modest 7 or 8, LOL.
Criterion needs to do a release of the obscure anime film called Angel's Egg. I think it would be a perfect fit for the collection.
amazing film, amazing, one of my favorite animated movies and one of the few within the Japanese animation that transcendes the term anime and becomes just a great film
The Raul Guerrero G Yeah I agree. I think it's better liked now than when it first came out. It's a film worth studying by those who love art house type stuff.
He looks so much like Michael Fassbender.
I actually just picked up Phantom Carriage and it is incredible. It will be turning 100 years old on January 1st which is insane.
Saw "Heaven's Gate" in thumbnail.
Couldn't resist.
Nice he actually talks about his picks.
I think this guy and me are the same person. I was 1 for 1 with almost all his picks and I'll definitely check out the things he picked that I wasn't aware of like Eric Rohmer's movies and White Material.
Holy shit I love this guy already. Is Louder Than Bombs available to watch or buy or anything?
Flawless picks
I really liked the phantom carriage but I still don't know why.
now it's nice to hear some explanation on why.
I love him. Great director
"This girl run away with my copy of la jetée" its true i am that girl.
criterion should add Reprise and Oslo, August 31st to their collection!
His films are fantastic
i want to go there
yess finally someone picked THE PHANTOM CARRIAGE!!!!
i swear to god, when he said "what is this film?", I immediately thought of House.
He looks a lot like Michael Fassbender.
Literally everyone picks up and comments on "House." I guess I need to see this thing!
Wow, he looks like his uncle sooooo much!
tfw when you think he's talking about PTA's "The Master" and then you realise it isn't even on Criterion yet.
Really solid director/writer
Closet 2.0? Hell yes!
3:10 Barry Jenkins: "NANI?!"
what I dont get is how these famous, in many cases rich guys, haven't bought or been given the entire criterion collection by a contact or a criterion executive. If I was rich and worked as a filmmaker or actor, I'd definitely bought this collection, every single title. Its a weird one for me, but perhaps I am the only one who thinks like that
"Rich". I got bad news for you buddy, cinema is not exactly a very profitable discipline.
The really top guys probably do have most of it. Which is why criterion usually invites older generation indie artists or upcoming ones.
@@saiashwin26 Agreed
Finally, someone acknowledges Rohmer!
there should be a criterion edition of Reprise.
I love Joachim Trier
he reminds me of darill from kids in the hall, played by mark mckinnie
he's great
He is so fine...
I love and watch so much movies, I don’t know a single movie these people pull out in this dang closet
I don't know why this guy is (or most closet invaders, actually) but I like the way he manages to describe sustaining interest and enthusiasm. I used to feel like that. Then the "I've seen them all" (or I know all variations of storyline devices) lethargy comes over me. Criterion will have to shake me out of my complacency and turn me into an enthusiastic 20y-o again. Rohmer doesn't do that for me, though. When I was twenty, he made me feel forty. And now...I'm too jaded even to finish this comment.
The Worst Person in the World was absolutely fantastic!
He gives a vibe off that he could be related to Fassbender
get John Waters in there!
Hfilm Reviews I've hated every movie of his I've seen...but I absolutely LOVE him as a person.
They get him!
Omg and I was kinda waiting for Lola Rennt..
We have another greedy one here! :-P
Of the closet picks I've seen, I think All That Jazz, has been picked more than any other movie.
Yes that and 8 and a half
@@pablopaul6371 Oh Really.
And House seems to be brought up almost every time I feel like
Repo Man, by far, which I don't personally understand. 😝
I'm working on plans to pass myself off as a famous movie person so that I can get one of those bags of movies.
And now 'The Worst Person in the World' will be a part of criterion.
❤️
ALL THAT JAZZ!!!
I would go crazy if I was brought to that closet and told "take what, you want." I am such a criterion fanboy, that I'd embarrass myself, if I was in that situation!
What I'd **really** love to see is a director or actor come in and only point out the movies on the shelves that they hate. Just someone with the balls to be like, "You know, I fucking hate Godard/Renoir/Malick/Bergman/Varda/Dreyer/All That Jazz/Rules of the Game/Salò/8 1/2/Three Women/Persona; they didn't influence me in any way, they didn't change my life, I'm not in awe of them, I don't view them as holy monuments of cinema that I have to speak of in hushed tones, they don't have a hallowed spot on my video shelf at home, I'm not obsessed with them, I actually cannot sit through them without feeling like I'm being tortured; I don't even want to hear about them anymore and I don't care what anyone thinks about that" and then pull those films off the shelves and stomp on them violently. Just one person to do it. That would be six million views instantly.
Heaven Gate remastered version is indeed a masterpiece.
gosh, i wish i was in there.... even not to keep a film, but just to explain why and how in front of camera like that.... :\
i don't know what the "criteria" are for making it into the collection, but...I hate the fact that some movies seem to go straight in without (or before) even having a standard DVD release.
It feels like more of a marketing ploy than an artistic acknowledgement.
(An attempt to grab modern indie sales straight out of the gate).
I mean, shouldn't there be a period of time that must pass before a movie can be voted on or become eligible???
(kind of like what they do when electing hall of fame candidates in various sports???)
HEAVEN’S GATE IS AN EXCELLENT MOVIE!!!
Good looking enough to be a movie star himself.
The Master: Tarkovsky
This series has convinced me that I really need to see All That Jazz
do the guests on this show get their dvd 's and blu rays for free?
Yeah, they let them walk out with them for gratis
His movie Reprise is great. Check it out if you haven't
3:10 Michael Fassbender is that you?
just saw worst person in the world at nyff and absolutely loved it. can’t wait to dive deeper
I think he is related to Lars von Trier.
Now agine Lars in this closet. That'd be something to watch.
+Dylan Brandsema Criterion would have to take the closet to von Trier if that was to happen
