- Director Sean Baker has proven himself to be one of the most interesting new voices working in American independent cinema. With his latest feature, TANGERINE, Baker has made his most vibrant and critically acclaimed film yet. Starring the dynamic newcomers Mya Taylor (who recently won a Gotham Award for breakthrough actor) and Kitana Kiki Rodriguez, the film portrays a day in the life of two transgender sex workers as they walk the streets of Los Angeles on Christmas Eve. The film, which is one part screwball revenge comedy and one part moving portrait of female friendship, was remarkably shot on an iPhone 5s. It’s now also making Hollywood history: Magnolia Pictures has launched Oscar-nomination campaigns for Rodriguez and Taylor-for best actress and best supporting actress-marking the first time a film distributor has backed the Oscar campaign of a transgender actor.
We were thrilled to have Baker stop by Criterion last week for a visit and a look inside our film closet. Below, check out the wide-ranging selection of films he chose to take with him-and watch TANGERINE on Netflix, Amazon, and iTunes.

"I'm making a film with kids soon." And we all cried like babies at the end.
I absolutely did...
Watched it several times…cried and cried and cried. BROOKLYN PRINCE!!!!!!!!! Awesome!

@@NikoHL Well... not really
0:57 "I'm going to be making a film with kids very soon." THE FLORIDA PROJECT!
1:06 "Lee Chang-Dong...I consider him a modern master...He has to make another film soon." BURNING!
But that Sunshine is just on another level
Burning is a really good elusive movie.
Now he's a Palme d'Or winner!
He is one of realest American directors. This man understands real people. I love this guy
He's like a mix of a modern John Cassavetes/American Mike Leigh. Dude's one of the very few filmmakers working today who's making films that show us aspects of life most other movies won't. We need more guys like him today.
@@Whoa802 I fully agree with that. I Know casssvetes and mike Leigh are big influence of his. So it makes sense. He gives us slice of life films like no other
"I went to NYU wanting to make the next Die Hard"
Is this the kid that PTA was talking about?
what ? what did pta said? where?
LMAOOOOOO
That was T2.
Sean Baker is such a Criterion fanboy I love it
"And i'm going to be making a film with kids...soon" THE FLORIDA PROJECT!!!
A masterpiece
The Fidget Spinner Movie, ending could’ve been better but I really liked it. Need to watch Tangerine still
ruclips.net/video/BhqZkp49PC4/видео.html
Best movie EVER
I believe this is the first closet video where a director grabs YiYi.
+Albert Maximus And Secret Sunshine
If the distinction is "director" then you may be right, but late great cinematographer Harris Savides picked it out in his closet vid .
I ordered that film from Blockbuster
fuck yesssss just watched it, such an incredible film
I mean it's one of the greatest movies ever made really, so glad he loves it so much.
10 out of 10 for enthusiasm. One of the best closet picks.
who wouldn't be greedy in that position
Gandhi
Martin Luther King Jr.
Abraham Lincoln
And considering how much of these films involved the work of Jewish people, Adolf Hitler.
The Fidget Spinner Movie relax
The Fidget Spinner Movie Not the place for philosophical comments.
Ikr
Sean Baker is an amazing realist and humanist director. I love his films and I absolutely love how he cites other great filmmakers of the same vein like Lee Chang Dong, Mike Leigh, Chantel Akerman, and Edward Yang
And he’s also a huge fan of low budget slasher movies and Filipino Cannibal movies!
Rene Clair - I married a witch, Mike Leigh - Naked + Life is sweet, Alex Cox - Repo man, Ken Loach - Kes, Chang-dong Lee - Secret Sunshine, Takashi Murakami - Jellyfish eyes, Edward Yang - Yi Yi, Gregory Nava - El norte, Chantal Akerman in the seventies, Paul Bartel - Eating Raoul, Eric Rohmer - Clair's knee
Thanks
I noticed “La Cienaga” by Lucrecia Martel at the end.
Thank you so much for doing that -- I have such a hard time hearing / seeing the films and I am furiously making notes into my iphone to be forgotten. But these are gems!
Thank you!!!!
Sean, You are in the company of the best filmmakers in the world! It was an honor to have worked with you.
As soon as he picked Repo Man I realized I loved Sean Baker
"I have a weak bladder when it comes to this sort of stuff" lol!
His road to the top was long and hard but he made it
I think the dream of the overnight success indie director like Robert Rodriguez or Kevin Smith is dead now. Far too many folks are out there making movies now with little-to-no financial support, so the mere accomplishment of getting a feature-length indie done on your own isn't as impressive a feat to studio executives as it was back during the analog era.
If there's anyone here who's also an aspiring filmmaker like me, my advice for them is to keep calm and keep trying. Not everyone can have a breakout indie debut like Steven Soderbergh or Richard Linklater. It takes time, patience, and hard work.
I'd be the guy in there asking "You guys got Jaws?"
YA LIKE JAWS
Got any uhhhhh Star Wars?
You guys got uhhhhhhh Jurassic Park?
Yeeeahh I was wondering if you CARRIED Dumb and Dumber ???
You wouldn’t... uhh... happen to have The Dark Knight here, would you?
Ahhh that subtle message for The Florida Project at 0:58. I'm so stoked for that movie, it looks fucking amazing.
AND IT WAS SO GOOD
It was so fucking great.
One of my favorites from last year.
Turns out to be one of the modern classics!
No wonder his films are so good!
In addition to an incredible talent he has a great taste.
And that film with kids turned out to be The Florida Project, one of the best films of 2017.
It's interesting to see how many of these filmmakers pick up Repo Man and rave about Alex Cox.
Oh cool I'm glad to see that he's a fan of Lee Chang-Dong, Burning is a masterpiece
Saw Peppermint Candy and that BLEW ME AWAY.
can't believe he's 50 now. he looks so young!
Palme d'Or winner right here!
1:13 - ...and 3 years later, Mr. Lee delivers another masterpiece: *Burning!*
And now he won the Palme d'Or. What a film lover.
Palme d’Or winner.
I met this guy at the Virginia Film Festival back in 2008 (he gave a talk on his movie Prince of Broadway, which was a great watch); really cool guy, I'm glad to see he's still making/talking about movies :D
I married a Witch [Rene Clair]
Naked [Mike Leigh]
Life is Sweet [Mike Leigh]
Repo Man [Alex Cox]
Kes [Ken Loach]
Secret Sunshine [Chang-dong Lee]
Jellyfish Eyes [Takashi Murakami]
Yi Yi [Edward Yang]
El Norte [Gregory Nava]
In the Seventies [Chantal Akerman]
Eating Raoul [Paul Bartel]
La Cienaga [Lucrecia Martel]
Six Moral Tales [Eric Rohmer collection]
That he’s so complimentary about his influences, and that he’s so forthright about what he loves about different films….beyond being a great filmmaker, he also seems like a great mentor.
Just watch Joanna Arnow’s newest film, which she wrote and directed and he produced.
The Florida Project is a masterpiece, and thank you for your selection.
Great picks all around! I love seeing the inspiration coming from Edward Yang and Lee Chang-dong. Both are incredible directors who are able to capture the lives and frustrations of very real people in their respective nations, just like Baker does with America.
What a character himself!
Thank you Sean Baker! The Florida Project is one of my favourite films of this decade - which I never would have expected!
I'm surprised he didn't pick a Cassavetes. Tangerine feels like we're in the same neighborhood.
Secret Sunshine after viewing has never left my memory. The lead Korean star is amazing.
I'm amazed at how many directors rep REPO MAN, I love how much love these lovely people are loving that under-loved film.
Harry dean stanton!!!!
This guy is fuckin' adorable. Like a little kid in a candy store. Finally, someone picked up Naked! I keep seeing it in all of these closet raid videos and no one ever picks it up, I keep daydreaming that I get to pick it one day. I liked the Florida project, but I have to see more of Sean's movies.
like kids in a candy store! I love this series so much 😂
"He has to make another film soon"
And than Lee Chang Dong made the greatest masterpice 3 years later.
Eh
Love Sean Baker. He does everything brilliantly.
even if I have no idea who these people are these are always a joy too watch.
List of films:
1. This
2. This
3. This one
4. This
5. Love this
6. This
7. Gotta have this
Great selection!! International, visually and conceptually daring. Nice comments and remarkable ability to integrate trends, and proposals. Great clip
Anybody else get the feeling that Criterion Collectors are starting to resemble vinyl collectors like we see in HIGH FIDELITY? Where we all turn into a bunch of elitists arguing over which Danish movement was best, make lists of best sophomore efforts (and shitting on people with more than 4 English-language films in any list), and keep demanding Blu-ray editions of obscure Senegalese Third Cinema movies?
I mean, I'm looking FORWARD to it, but...I still worry.
David Heslin
No, it's not. But the TEMPTATION to be purist assholes can be very strong when you start talking about what makes a quality film worthy of recognition from Criterion.
Are we not that already?
What's the alternative? Seeing the latest Vin Diesel film twice in the theatre because it yields such lovely charms upon second viewing? I'll stick with Criterion, thanks. Voluntary elitist over here. Too much fucking annoying pandering happening everywhere else in the world.
Has there ever been an explanation of how subjects are selected for a trip in the closet?
I love all Sean Baker movies. Greed at the Criterion spot is understandable.
“Naked” is an unknown masterpiece & David Thewlis greatest performance! 👌👏👌👏👏 Great pics!
I got it for Christmas from the November criterion sale!
Because of this video ! And Sean baker being influenced by it
Lo amoooo ❤
Sean Baker- You are the future. Sorry you got snubbed for “The Florida Project.” You deserved better.
Tina Privitera seriously. The Florida Project being skipped over like it was was such a huge insult to, what I felt, was one of the top three films of the year.
It's insane how no one ever talks about how young he looks doesn't even look in his 50s how he managed this and how he's lifestyle i always wonder that in my head watching his movies
Does anyone else feel a weird gravitational pull towards him??? He blew my mind …….
Omg he mentioned Riff Raff. Love that movie
Wonderful picks. Looking forward to checking out Yi Yi!
"The life of a repo man is always intense!" Good pick, sir!
TFP is such a wonderful film. Sean Baker is a fantastic film auteur.
Sean is so wholesome. Can't wait to see what his next film after Florida Project is like.
Life is Sweet is one of my top favorites of all time and Mike Leigh is one of my favorite directors, that's so cool he was influenced by Life is Sweet enough to include a scene in Tangerine that was inspired by it. From the thumbnail I was wondering if that was the DVDs he was holding cause I have it on criterion as well.
+Capgungoesbang pretty underrated also.
What about naked ? Any good ?
@@Njbear7453yes, a masterstroke
@@srini1917 I enjoyed it
I finally found a comment section that acknowledges Florida Project. That movie is a phenomenon in modern indie cinema circuit.
I consider Sean baker a modern master all his films and a collection of his shorts must be in criterion collection especially Florida project
Seleccionó La Ciénaga de Lucrecia Martel... Eliminaron esa parte. Una lástima, hubiera sido interesante escuchar qué dijo sobre esa película...
Excellent picks Sean!
Back when he was "going to be making a film with kids very soon."
And now we have THE FLORIDA PROJECT.
Awesome.
Wow, I don't think I've seen that huge of a haul before. I've never seen anyone take an Eclipse set before. Cool, I love the Eclipse series.
+dannydontgoin237 The Wolfpack too SO many
Best quote in this series: "I think "Claire's knees" set me on the right path..."
And now, Chang-dong Lee has made another movie.
My favorite Ken Loach film is The Wind That Shakes the Barley.
What a greedy bastard! I would have taken a lot more.
It's cool that he picked up Life Is Sweet and Secret Sunshine. Both among my all time favorites and both in need of more love.
Anyone that picks Repo Man is instantly a legend imho.
Lee Chang-dong went and made another film and it was fucking great, surprise
He’s making a film about kids, The Florida Project....AWESOME MOVIE!!!
Claire's Knee set many down the right path
Cheers for a good laugh
Sean Baker cooked up another absolute banger and won Palm D'or
Watching this in 2020 “Im gonna make a film with kids soon” I chuckled when he said that
Says he doesn't want to be greedy, then proceeds to take half the closet with him!
Absolutely love Yi Yi
After Serevin closet ... yeah the guys got good wide range taste ...
Will criterion ever release their blurays in region b in England?
Bro you could hear the guy recording the video sigh when he said “it can’t be over until I grab one of your eclipse series”
El Norte is so good...
Do Asghar Farhadi next
Sean u have the understanding on history , geography and culture too
Nice it is
These are the minimum prerequisite of a film maker
Love the background music
when he's about to say he hasnt watched a film and then its like NOPE SURE I DID
And now he's made his answer to Mike Leigh's Naked with RED ROCKET, his best yet
YiYi is unbelievably good!
Although it is not mentioned, he has Lucrecia Martel's La Ciénaga in his pile.
he went full on...nice
From all the films he eventually takes, the only one we don't hear about (I mean is edited out of this) is La Ciénaga
"I'm going to be making a film with kids very soon"
And it was fucking excellent
Manoteó La Ciénaga de Martel, se ve que la tiene en la mano, pero no está la parte en que habla de la peli LPM!
if he likes Ken Loach and is working on a drama with kids I'd heartedly recommend Clio Barnard's The Selfish Giant.
Come on, dude... Tati boxset, right behind you, middle shelf!
I have never heard of one film he picked up except Repo Man. lol I feel like I am missing out on something.
"Free for those who can afford it, very expensive for those who can't."
looks like he's also holding La Cienaga, by Lucrecia Martel, why wasn't that shown in the edit?
Yeah I have La Cienaga and I was like wtf I recognize the back of the box he's holding
What a cool guy!
"How can I not go... with Chantal Akerman" 😩
He seems like a pretty cool bro.
