It definitely does remind me of Gummo for its setting and “documentary” feel. It doesn’t have the shaky cam which is a real nice factor of the Red Rocket. Can’t decide if I like it more than Tangerine but both are amazing.
Beach Bum from Harmony Korine has the feel of Red Rocket or The Florida project with a slightly bigger budget and a bigger star. I love Gummo too, it's wild that DMX is playing it in his mansion in Belly.
@@Eli_B3000 noted. I haven’t seen Korine’s other films, but I want to. I absolutely love Gummo, probably in my top 5-10. So wonderfully awful and hopeful at the same time.
Really glad they did a whole video on red rocket, I was dissapointed they didn't mention it in the end of year review. Definitely one of my favorites of the last couple years. Ill have to watch the rest of Simon Bakers movies.
"shake the camera, make it look like a documentary!" People have no idea what a pet peeve that is to me. Those are words uttered only by filmmakers that have no clue about how documentaries are made. Documentaries are usually made by people who wants to look as professional and competent as possible. Shaking the camera around achieves none of those goals.
Just to be clear. I am not suggesting that RLM are part of those who erroneously think that shaking the camera makes it look like a documentary. I understand that the saying was used in the video to illustrate that mentality in some filmmakers.
@@luichinplaystation610 Yup. Gorilla as opposed to Guerilla filmmaking, the naming coming from guerilla warfare where you sneak around where you're not supposed to be to wage war... or make movies... (It does make me wonder if that old proposed Apocalypse Now version that George Lucas wanted to make... in the field of the real life vietnam war... If that technically would count as guerilla filmmaking...) But yes. I accept that definition. Shaking cameras around to make it look like documentaries in ways that documentaries actively avoid as much as possible, should be defined as Gorilla Filmmaking. As in giving the camera to a gorilla who has no clue as to what he's holding in his hands.
Well I guess what they TRY to do is make it seem like the scene is so intense and unnerving that they can't even get a steady shot of what's going on, for example, gunfire in a firefight. But really they know it saves money because instead of setting off pyrotechnics or having elaborate setpieces they can focus on one person, film one explosion in the background and shake the camera to seem like so much more is going on. It's garbage filmmaking though. I can see using shaky cam once or twice in a movie, but many use it for every action sequence.
Glad you guys made this video, because that poster was SO well done that I thought this movie was actually a dumb, Judd Apatow-esque boner comedy. I was like "what is this shit?", then it turned out to be a Sean Baker movie that I hadn't even heard of.
For some reason the theater I worked at only showed this movie for ONE screening, and the director was there. Really cool dude who was nice to talk to but the way it was set up felt like it was a local indie movie because they only sold tickets THROUGH him for some reason? It was a really weird setup. The marketing for this movie was weirdly nonexistent.
I've always wondered about that...I was at that Red Robin on 76th! Mike's a filthy liar- He tried to flip the table, but panicked after he spilled his drink. Then he just ran out of the building making whoop whoop sounds like Curly from the 3 Stooges.
Before. In fact, when complaining about the fries, the manager called him a Hack Fraud, prompting him to shit on the ground in anger. When the manager laughed at him, he tried to flip the table, but got scared after his Freckled Lemonade spilled. During his harrrowing escape, he proceeded to slip on his own doodoo feces, before getting up and resuming his departure, all while whooping like Zoidberg from Futurama. I hope I cleared everything up. Btw, Rich was also there, and he gave the waitress AIDS. The end.
Mike, one trick I found out for Red Robin is to ask for fries once you order something with bottomless fries. It essentially serves as an appetizer and you get more fries to start with.
Wow, pleasant surprise to see this one. Played at the theater I work at and I really liked it--of course like 5 other people came to see it over its 3 day run so I thought I might be the only one who watched it, haha.
This is a movie I would pay to see at the theater but no theater around me is playing it. They have Tom Holland playing on about 8 screens. 4 screens for Spider-Man: No Way Home, and 4 screens for Uncharted.
When I saw the thumbnail I thought this was gonna be about some 70-80's raunchy/slapstick movie I hadn't heard about, but like they discuss in the videos, its usage is actually so great - then when I hear its a Sean Baker, then it just makes that much more sense - really liking the sound of this movie and glad the boys gave it some of the attention it seems to deserve! Also glad to hear others going in on some the stuff from the "film" that was "Don't Look Up", seemed to have been a real flavor of the month "DO YOU GET IT?" movie that I wasn't hearing too much from the other side for, the mention of what the director does on his social media seems to fit lol, a movie that seemingly seeks to be divisive via encouraging tired stereotype-like gags for no other reason than a want to appear as artistically provocative. Thanks for another video and keep up the good work Rich Evans and guest stars!
Yeah, I agree with a lot of what you guys said about Simon Rex and his (movie) character. I remember my first seeing him was during his MTV VJ days. Thank you, guys!
Great recommendation! Watched it and I felt so uncomfortable the whole time. The first scene where the dude takes his wife and step mom to the donut shop and they are all talking over each other like this is a trip to Disney world was crazy accurate to seeing these type of people in real life.

And then trying to flip the table of his booth when he gets 6 bottomless fries instead of 8

Saw it at the FNC Festival last Fall and definitely was the highlight of that festival and of 2021. Simon Rex was born to play that part. Can't wait to see what he'll do next. I feel it goes without saying (while saying it) that Sean Baker would be a PERFECT BotW guest. I hope thanks to this review they might get in touch and make it happen.
Yooooo Sean Baker would be a WILD BotW guest and he'd have explotation/trash-terpiece knowledge to rival Jay for sure. Would love to see that happen!
I made Sean aware of the review. Let’s see if anything comes of it. 😛
@@GrindhouseFunhouse You know him personally?
I live 15 min from Tx City and you can absolutely see plants from anywhere in the town. They did a great job of capturing that.
You guys make the best cold opens. I actually thought for a second while I zoned out a bit that you were gonna do a food review episode.
I love that you referenced Badlands. That’s my favorite movie. Now I gotta watch Red Rocket
Every once in a while, through the drunken rants, you guys remind us that you're really talented movie reviewers. I'm sold on this movie because of you hacks
This "Talk About" series is great. Pig for example was my favourite movie of last year.
It's funny hearing Mike talking about Simon Rex's earlier career, I used to be a huge fan of his rap career as Dirt Nasty.
Three Loco
Same lol
The Three Loco project is legendary
I was renovating a bar in northern California and he was in the same little town as me on vacation. it was so surreal seeing him at like 8 am in a cute little cafe grabbing a coffee and just like vibing. chose not to say anything to him since he seemed to be enjoying himself
This was my favourite film of 2021, Simon Rex was so fucking good I really hope he gets more roles in the future
It definitely does remind me of Gummo for its setting and “documentary” feel. It doesn’t have the shaky cam which is a real nice factor of the Red Rocket. Can’t decide if I like it more than Tangerine but both are amazing.
Classic movie Gummo by Harmony Korine..
Super uncomfortable, wildly funny, the whole movie really felt like spending time with people from your home town. It was cool to learn its recorded on 16mm, I didn't know why it looked so good. Ill have to watch the rest of Simon Bakers movies.
"A new indie drama that will make you feel like shit" 🤣
I'm pretty sure best editing is just an award given as a consolation prize regardless of quality of the actual editing. Remember bohemian rhapsody?
Mike’s face when Jay doesn’t recognise the Rocketeer line… I feel you Mike.
Rich would’ve got it...
Saw this about 2 months ago really liked it glad to see it on this channel.
As an Englishman I find Mike's use of the world bollocks particularly amusing 😁
The editing is always so damn good and catches me off guard sometimes.
I've watched 7:15 about 10 times now and that tiny 1 second cut has me rolling
*exhales knowingly*
"shake the camera, make it look like a documentary!"
People have no idea what a pet peeve that is to me.
The so called gorila style and running
@@luichinplaystation610
Yup. If that technically would count as guerilla filmmaking...)
But yes. I accept that definition. Shaking cameras around to make it look like documentaries in ways that documentaries actively avoid as much as possible, should be defined as Gorilla Filmmaking. As in giving the camera to a gorilla who has no clue as to what he's holding in his hands.
Did I understand what you meant? Yes... I just thought the idea was fun to run with a little bit. :)
It’s a really special movie. Gorgeous and real, both. Tons of good performances. Lil was spectacular, but like, so was everyone. Inspired casting.
Finally saw this last night and it was a trip to say the least. Sean Baker's films are top notch and can't be missed.
Thank you for talking about this movie. It is an amazing film
Red Robin’s CEO watching this:
“This is how I win.”
I watched this last year in an empty theater! Definitely one of my favorites from 2021.
Glad you guys made this video, because that poster was SO well done that I thought this movie was actually a dumb, Judd Apatow-esque boner comedy. I was like "what is this shit?", then it turned out to be a Sean Baker movie that I hadn't even heard of.
I was looking for this in the HITB 2021 catch-up videos. Glad y'all got to see it and do a review & recommendation!
Maybe wasn’t really showing and the director paid for a screening and sold tickets from there. Makes more sense to me anyway 🤷🏾♂️😂😂👍🏾
Love this channel, probably the best in my humble.🤘🏻
I've always wondered about that...I was at that Red Robin on 76th! Mike's a filthy liar- He tried to flip the table, but panicked after he spilled his drink. Then he just ran out of the building making whoop whoop sounds like Curly from the 3 Stooges.
Bet he still slipped in his own doodoo feces though
Was this before or after he shit on the ground?
The end.

This sounds legit.
Favorite movie of 2021! Glad to see you guys talk about it
Mike, one trick I found out for Red Robin is to ask for fries once you order something with bottomless fries. It essentially serves as an appetizer and you get more fries to start with.
Midnight Mass and now this okey thx guys i watch so fast now . much power and love MJ
Watching Mike try to explain Dirt Nasty to Jay is the best
Watched this last night and loved it. Such a delightfully douchy main character by Rex, and I adored the cinematography.
you guys should have your own kind of award ceremony for the year of movies.
The Red Robin tangent had me rolling. Thanks for spotlighting weird movies!
Thank you for finally exposing the bottomless fries sham
Wow, pleasant surprise to see this one. Played at the theater I work at and I really liked it--of course like 5 other people came to see it over its 3 day run so I thought I might be the only one who watched it, haha.
This is a movie I would pay to see at the theater but no theater around me is playing it. They have Tom Holland playing on about 8 screens. 4 screens for Spider-Man: No Way Home, and 4 screens for Uncharted.
It was only at my local theater in December for about 3 weeks
such a great movie! thanks for the reccomendation
I stayed in a hotel in Texas City, TX, this movie nails the aesthetic. Encroaching gunk.
This was the last movie I saw before Canada went into winter lockdown. It was a great experience, and I can only echo their thoughts.
I DJ'd for Simon when he did a show in downtown Orlando years back [yes, he rapped], super nice guy and real chill
Great recommendation! Watched it and I felt so uncomfortable the whole time. The first scene where the dude takes his wife and step mom to the donut shop and they are all talking over each other like this is a trip to Disney world was crazy accurate to seeing these type of people in real life.
Can’t wait to watch this later on in the day.
I can’t wait to watch it yesterday.
After you take your morning meds?
Can't wait to watch this while having my dinner.
AND on a different website
I'm really happy we started this off about Red Robin's fries. I legit have been thinking about it since the last time I went there.
I'm sure "Fat Mike slips" would show me the vocalist/bassist of NOFX drunk on stage.
PLEASE never stop making videos. RLM is my lifeblood at this point.
How dare you tease us with "Fat Mike Eats". Make that shit happen. Bring Rich in for a second opinion whenever you feel indifferent about the food.
Rich can't go to fast food places, he'll hurt himself
@@swankypants9366 You're right. He must be protected.
Everytime mike says Sandra Bollocks an angel gets its wings.
Or a pair of bollocks.
If your amazed by the set dressing, don’t be! Texas City hasn’t left the 70s for awhile now
You have to ask for the fries as an appetizer when you order your burger. Been doing this for ten years or so - it usually works.
I love that Mike and Jay take a huge dump on Don't Look Up
