Love that he just chooses some of them based on the description. Just pure curiosity to experience something new.
Like when you walk into a Blockbuster or Hollywood Video
Two of my favorite worlds collide! John would be horrified to know that on my birthday last year I got a group of almost 10 people to watch Salo with me. It was surreal.
Not as surreal as the fact that you didn't refer to them as "ex-friends."
@@Theomite they are definitely keepers
I was with my boyfriend and a couple we're mutual friends with and asked one of them if he'd like to watch Salo. My boyfriend turned to our other friend and immediately said "Do you want to do LITERALLY anything else?"
Mad respect. I wouldn’t have the stones to show it blind without offering some social commentary. Me? I’m always pushing Sweet Movie to anyone who will take a chance...
I've been a John Darnielle stan for some years now, and still have moments (like these) where I see him do something so cool, so pure, so human, where I just fall in love with him all over again.
Started from The best ever death metal band out of Denton now we're here
Picks:
Salo -Pasolini
Samurai Trilogy -Nagaki
Salvatore Giuliani
Richard III
Shadow Warrior-Kurosawa
Marlon Riggs’s works
Bruce Lee collection
Youth of the beast
you left out "Company"
Kurosawa's work is masterpiece after masterpiece. I doubt I'm reinventing the wheel saying that.
It's still good to hear it again.
I find No Regrets for Our Youth is very overlooked.
@@tygerstripes3752 🎯🎯🎯💯🙏🏼 (One of my top 3 artists of all time... along with Kubrick & Fellini.)
Same with hearing someone rave about the brilliance of Toshiro Mifune
@@thecinematicmind I've only seen Seven Samurai, Ikiru, Yojimbo, Sanjuro, and High And Low.
@@joshuabrown3361 Currently No Regrets, The Most Beautiful, Rashomon and Seven Samurai I have seen.
I'm honestly surprised John hasn't made a song about The Criterion Collection
The Mountain Goats are great. 2022's BLEED OUT was one of my fav albums. Nice picks, John!
Their best since Goths
I don't listen to his music but am a fan of his books. Seems like a cool guy too and i dig his picks and style!
been waiting on this one, "obviously you're in the presence of one such face right now" lmao did not disappoint
i love how uprententious he is. dude just extemporaneously picks what he likes.
Extemporaneous: Composed, performed, or uttered on the spur of the moment
Had to google that one
@@TekWarfare thank you for your service
Love the sarcasm here 😂 ….
Awesome seeing Darnielle on here. His passion is infectious! Great picks too. 🙂
I'm also with him on Salo. I think I would have been fascinated if I'd seen it in my early 20s, but at this point in my life I just can't.
Going To Criterion Closet
This is probably the first time I've seen someone take The Samurai Trilogy....finally!♥
My boy took the Bruce Lee collection, too!
Mifune was a God of acting. Kurosawa had the perfect muse, much like Ozu has Hara Setsuko.
Who needs coffee when there's John? 🤘😁 Rad as always, CC...
Lmao didn’t he feature on Aesop Rock’s song Coffee?
This guy is full of energy when it comes to movies.
He's full of energy when it comes to anything!
@@scotey Yeah he's just enthusiastic and knowledgeable about all sorts of art
I always love the enthusiasm when people are in the closet.
Cool picks. Mountain Goats is really neat. I loved his album Goths
It's nice to see someone else who recognises the importance of Salo but has avoided actually watching it.
"Salvatore Giuliano" is such a great movie.
One of my absolute favorite Criterion films! He'll absolutely love it. One of Scorsese's Top 10 Criterion films.
Please upgrade it to Blu-Ray, Criterion...
Makes a great double feature with Battle of Algiers
Haven't seen it yet but I saw Rosi's Illustrious Corpses last year at Film Forum and loved it. I am putting Salvatore Giuliano on my queue!
Darnielle is a brilliant author as well.
tbh, if they ever let me into that closet, that bag they give the guest would turn into a solid brick of movies. Jus sayin, it would blu ray tetris!
If you like Johns rambling answers and his music, im sure you'll love the podcast "i only listen to the mountain goats" ❤
Imagine a Mountain Goats album based on Salo.
That chap is a very entertaining guest
Glad he also is a Sondheim fan- expected no less. Hope he's a Springsteen fan too.
..he's so right about "Salo"...I know many believe it to be "essential viewing" for any respectable cinephile...BUT...I'm not going to lie and say it hasn't been festering on my watch list for over a DECADE now...
Great choices!
Love Criterion Collection!
Just read Devil House not long ago! He has important things to say.
Excellent vibes
Yesss amazing picks and thx god you love company documentary too
the edit of Bruce Lee was magic
I caught that as well!
The thought of John watching Youth of the Beast just fills me with joy, I'm pretty laid back but even I was jumping on the furniture and punching the air when I first saw it. If you know it you know, if you don't imagine a super-caffeinated Grand Theft Auto: Tokyo game set in a world of super-cool, sharp suited Yakuza guys and you're halfway there.
Can never go wrong with Seijun Suzuki!
Just recently bought _Story Of A Prostitute..._ and _Gate Of Flesh..._ and _Tokyo Drifter..._ AND _Branded To Kill,_ actually! 🥰😍😁
@@Jimmy1982Playlists Quality (with a capital Q)
so happy to see someone pick the marlon riggs boxset it's great
I love this type of picking. The movies are also good.
God I love him so much
A friend of mine from College gave me his copy of Salò and said "watch this over the weekend, give it back on monday, and we can talk about it". Went home for the weekend, covid lockdown started , still too afraid to watch it, never saw him again, it's still sitting in my cupboard upstairs as I type this (too afraid to keep it on the shelf with the others).
Love who they’re choosing to into the Criterion Closet nowadays.
The fact that there is a need for Shakespeare defenders is mind-boggling
OMG LOVE LOVE LOVE
I'm with him on Salo.
I sooooooo loved Devil House!
I watched Salo before. It was really good but so hard to watch. I loved it though
I can attest to the fact tha Salo is quiet a feature. And you need to braze yourself for it. Most of what has been written and said about it is true. It is that disturbing. At the same time its fascinating for the same reasons. I recommend dont eat before it, and i doubt you will have an appetite afterwards. Good picks.
Shakespeare is incredible.
Sondheim too.
you got the goat in there? unreal.
Are all of my hobbies in this one video???
i love him so much
Cool!
Cool guy. Fascinating to listen to. He should do audio commentaries.
He voices his own audiobooks, I found that out with Devil House actually!
@@catharticgemini Oh cool!
Does anybody know which camera is used to record this video?
I think it’s mentioned in the closet picks for the 5 standups. I know Jabukie Young-White is in that one
@@markwalsh478 thank you Mark, I’ll check it out.
WHAT HOW DID I NOT SEE THIS
he’s so real for the Salo comment
My two fav things: mountain goats and criterion ❤
Finally this happened
John should write songs on the next Mountain Goats album based on his Criterion Collection picks
salo is cool
Some _antidote for strychnine_
Now get Wurster in there!
Staple Head!
mountain goats bb.
' Salo ' is a great film. It should be endured.
If John Darnielle wants to work at Criterion, then you know you have an enviable job as a person working at Criterion...
Where can I send my CV? :V
risky picks... now we are talking
yoooooo
Somebody help me, please. I did not "get" the connection between the White Witch and the Porn store massacre at all. In fact, having read his first two novels with great interest and admiration, I was totally stoked to find a beautiful HC signed copy of Devil House on the el cheapo wall at Vroman's. I have no idea why the teacher did what she did, and I have no idea what all of that plot line had to do with the rest of the book.
Her motive, as Gage presents it, was simple fear. Her story is included because of what it tells us about Gage (particularly his ideas about the sanctity of certain spaces and his sympathies for troubled youth) and how his writing usually goes (in contrast to the story of Devil House, which he refuses to tell straight). It also provides context for the letter he gets later, which in turn is crucial to understanding his own motivations.
@@spacechad4749 Thanks for that
Salo had that poopoo scene which has to be the only scene from a movie that I just can't watch.
Same here. I can watch blood, torture, whatever but anything with feces/vomit/pus/body fluids I can’t stand
I agree with him about Salo. I know enough about it and I will never see it. It is just not necessary for me to watch the sadism of this film.
oh shit its markiplier
Doesn't your band play "Staple Head"...PLAY "STAPLE HEAD"!
I don't think I know who half of the people featured on 'Closet Picks' are.
Who cares? Personally, I always get excited for these videos, regardless of who's the guest. That being said, when I see someone I recognize as a guest on these videos (like Rodrigo Prieto), I'm always happy
same, so I look them up and check out there stuff.

@@hellohello6510 Damn autocorrect. Am I right?
Perfect opportunity to explore John's music, you won't regret it!
Nice of him to give such a final opinion on something he's never going to watch.
Good choice in not picking Salo. It's vile. Contains images you will never be able to unsee. I am totally anti-censorship, but if the film industry (and only the film industry) wanted to destroy all copies of Salo, I wouldn't be against the idea.
Just watch Salo. It's only a movie.
He won’t watch a movie….a depiction….a moving image….that’s fake…..it’s art, not actual traumatic events.
Lol "muh fascism"...so cringe
Fasha pig spotted
What do you think Salò is about?
@@barrybenson4158 it's a communist homosexual trying to frighten people from opposing his worldview.
actual room temperature IQ shit lmao. how did you even find your way to this channel?
