Oooo Mr fancy pants with his $5 a month to spend on Patreon. Damn 1% always flashing their wealth. I bet you think artists should be paid for their work too, don’t you Mr. Rockefeller.
Gonna pop in here to advocate for rough recording and grating voices, I get so much out of unpolished passionate performances and they can be used to such a powerful effect.
god the story of the alpha couple is so absolutely fantastic, with the ironic juxtaposition of their love of their hatred of each other. as someone who has loved the mountain goats since forever, this video is perfectly accurate and beautiful, good job!
You had me at the first line, when you mentioned "they arent many bands that feel as human as the mountain goats"... thats exactly what hooked me up to their music.
This video is phenomenal but the alpha couple is much older than 1994. the Mountain Goats started after John was writing a series of poems with alpha in the title and when he released his first cassette tape in 1991 it featured an alpha song called One Winter at Point Alpha Privative.
Idk if I'm out of the loop but I've never heard of this band I regard your channel highly though so I think I'm about to stumble onto a new favourite Edit: I'm a few songs into tallahasse and it's brilliant.. Very AJJ
Check out the albums Tallahassee and All Hail West Texas. If you like Tallahassee more, go forward and check out their studio albums. If you like AHWT more, go back and check out their lo-fi recordings.
When I was considering pivoting from instrumental music to vocal music and wondering what to write about as a leader of a relatively boring life, this was the video that finally made me realize that not every song has to be autobiographical. This video has helped me jumpstart my lyric writing. Eventually my writing did end up having my life and thoughts bleed through into the lyrics, but it still allows me the freedom of polishing some untruths in there knowing that officially the song is from a fictional person's perspective. Thank you Noah. Big fan of Ghost Notes as well, an avid listener.
I found your channel through searching for a mountain goats video from the past month. After I finished watching this vid I went on to watch a bunch of your stuff, and I really like your content! Glad to have stumbled upon you, subbed :)
Just subbed to you a few days ago and then you release a vid on one of my top bands. I feel so lucky. Now do one on Modest Mouse ( The album Good News for People Who Love Bad News would be killer) and I might start believing in fate. Fantastic analysis as usual. Thanks.
scrolling thru channel: "this sure seems nice might consider subscribing" sees MG-related video: instant subscribe b4 even watching it keep spreading the good word, brother!
Oddly reminds me of the early My Chemical Romance albums. Their first album (I brought you my bullets you brought me your love) tells this weird story about this couple similar to bonnie and clyde fighting off vampires or something before they die. Their second album (Three cheers for sweet revenge) continues the story as the husband makes a deal with the devil to kill 1000 evil men in exchange for his wife back. Would suggest a listen.
The alpha couple remind me of the plot of nick caves 'where the wild roses grow', in which the protagonist sings about being so unbelievably in love with this woman, he wants to take her down to the river Bank, cover her in roses and bash her skull in with a rock. Love makes you do these things.
I know im not a patreon and you did a vid that featured David Bowie but can you do one about his life and him pushing boundaries? He was such a big figurehead in so many aspects of life when he was in his prime, and all the way up to his death.
Awesome job man, these are some of the best videos on RUclips. Any chance on doing one on Hssing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer/The Past is a Grotesque Animal by of Montreal (about Kevin Barnes' mental struggle through those times)?
Really liked this video, but I wish you had gotten into the AHWT alpha couple tracks. "The Mess Inside" takes a more sympathetic tone than any of the other AC songs, which I think is a lot more compelling and makes Tallahassee work better imo- you care about these people and are rooting for them to leave each other and become happy. In a half-verse: "We tried to fight the creeping sense of dread with temporal things/ most of the time I guess I felt alright/ but I wanted you to love me like you used to do."
This is a great video! But i think i feel you need to put the last instrument legend: John Bohnam' Drumming Flea's Bass Freddie mercury's Vocals I think its only missing Jimi Hendrix's guitar
The mountain goats are a band I don't really listen to unless I am in a very specific sorta rough state. Usually drunk. They're not my favorite band but it's a band that's always been there exactly when I needed them.
meg I really don't like the music they play and the lyrics to me seems ok. I didn't get the strong connection you did. i didn't see them they way you explained in your video.
Hey, guy who requested this on Patreon here. Great job dude, you didn't disappoint.
Graham Kristensen thank you for requesting it
You did good
Thanks guy

Thank You Moral Orel of Adult Swim for putting 'No Children' in the episode, 'Numb".

Darnielle is pronounced Darn-eel.
Yes, thank you
Right? lol
Darn eels. Always having no limbs and hanging out in holes.
I’ve loved this band for many years and I’m ecstatic to see them get some attention on here. Love it!
When people ask what kind of music you're into and you have to say "This guy called The Mountain Goats, but only really the boombox years"
This video is phenomenal but the alpha couple is much older than 1994.
the Mountain Goats started after John was writing a series of poems with alpha in the title and when he released his first cassette tape in 1991 it featured an alpha song called One Winter at Point Alpha Privative.
*privative. Privative is the "a" you put before words like "amoral", and so the idea is its a beginning of something very bad.
I was so excited when I saw this video! The Alpha couple mythology is so interesting to me. I only wish this video could have been longer!
Oh man, I love the Mountain Goats! And I like all the live versions of No Children.
Idk if I'm out of the loop but I've never heard of this band
I regard your channel highly though so I think I'm about to stumble onto a new favourite
Edit: I'm a few songs into tallahasse and it's brilliant.. Very AJJ
They are severely underrated. Check out the Tallahassee and Heretic Pride albums.
Brilliant, thanks for the recommendation!
Jack Doyle After "Tallahassee", listen to "The Sunset Tree".
Check out the albums Tallahassee and All Hail West Texas. If you like Tallahassee more, go forward and check out their studio albums. If you like AHWT more, go back and check out their lo-fi recordings.
AJJ actually covered Alpha Rats Nest on a cover album of the album (Tallahassee turns ten). They have also covered a couple of their other songs too.
'Old college try' has always been the standout track off of Tallahassee for me.
Finally, someone besides me who likes The Mountain Goats.

Anyone ever watched Moral Orel?
Klas Kitsune someday it'll get the respect it deserves
Cameron Koontz It's way too underrated and overlooked. It's amazing
I await for the day it gets popular
It's got a cult following for sure.
thats how i found the goats from that outro was exactly what i needed
Thank you for exposing the Mountain Goats to more people. One of my all time favorite bands.

I think the story of the alpha couple is my favorite story ever told maybe
Thanks for sharing this band, it was interesting. Reminds me of The Rugburns or Reckless Kelly’s “Ballad of Tommy and Marla”.
I honestly don't know how you consistently seem to make videos about all of my favorite artists
Awesome video! It's Darn-Eel tho ;)
Whoa, I am very presently surprised to see you do a video essay on the mountain goats
Surprised this wasn’t trending like a month or two ago

I remember drunkenly slow dancing to 'No Children' with my ex fiance the night we realized it wasn't gonna work.
But what if you're happily married and 3 years sober?
Saw them live in 2023 will always remember
That kind of lyrics reminds me of Mishka Shubaly. I like it.
Do a video on rush's drums or bass! Pleaase!
Awesome job man, these are some of the best videos on RUclips. Any chance on doing one on Hssing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer/The Past is a Grotesque Animal by of Montreal (about Kevin Barnes' mental struggle through those times)?

The mountain goats are a band I don't really listen to unless I am in a very specific sorta rough state. Usually drunk.
They're not my favorite band but it's a band that's always been there exactly when I needed them.

Can you do a video about Bonnie Tyler's "I Need A Hero"?
Misery music, good but too depressing
Do Led Zeppelin
its pronounced dar-neel
Do steely dan
They sound underproduced
Jimmy Wyndham their older stuff was recorded on a boombox straight to cassette, so they definitely were
No everybody else is over produced
meg I really don't like the music they play and the lyrics to me seems ok. I didn't get the strong connection you did. i didn't see them they way you explained in your video.
squidman6000 it's not for everyone. I liked them a lot more nine or ten years ago.
Every single song sounds exactly the same. Not a goats fan. The drunken abusive couple - yuck.
Hope Springs-A-Turtle
Go through trauma then try them out again
I've been to 2 of their shows.
In Chapel Hill and in Tampa
