This is a great band, and I'm a big fan. This song is definitely a fan favorite, and it's from the most beloved era of the band's output. I get the sense there are a lot of people who have an intense love for 2-4 albums from this period but haven't listened to them past that (which is understandable, but still a bit of a shame).
My favorite semi-recent album from them is In League with Dragons, which has more traditional production than what you've heard in these past two tracks. It's a decent starter album, especially if you'd prefer a little more going on musically.
John Darnielle is a phenomenal writer, and I have no doubt that anyone can find a dozen songs he's written that would blow them away the first time they heard them. I remember hearing "Pink and Blue" for the first time, and knowing instantly it would be stuck in my head at least once a week for the rest of my life.
They're too prolific for anyone to truly love everything they make, but there is a lot of undeniably great music across their catalogue.

    This was really, really good.
Family Happiness off of The Coroner's Gambit would be an interesting new direction you guys could take this if you ever continued with John Danielle and the Mountain Goats!

I'll try to break down what I think "There will be feasting and dancing in Jerusalem next year" means.
John Darnielle has, at various times, described himself as a Christian and a theist. So it's definitely a bit of religious imagery.
Jerusalem, as you both pointed out, has been historically seen as a result of liberation from bondage in Egypt. It takes on a bit more metaphor in the New Testament. Particularly in Revelation 21, the second-to-last chapter of the entire Bible. In it, there is a "new heaven and a new earth" which is represented by a "new Jerusalem." It's this kind of apocalyptic, eschatological language Darnielle is evoking. He's holding out for "heaven" - not in the sense of an afterlife, but in the sense of a world where things get better. Where there isn't this kind of violence and evil, a place of not merely survival but one of celebration and joy.

    Dear Chaps and Chappettes
I did my undergraduate study at Leicester Polytechnic (now De Montford University). I remember going to a lecture given by Michael Nyman to help promote "The Draughtsman's Contract". I may have mentioned before that Gavin Bryars taught at my university, but I have a feeling that was not the reason why he came. This is all lost in the mists of time. He spoke about the structure of the film and how he composed the music to fit that structure. My over riding memory was that it was an interesting idea, but I wondered about the emotional impact. As I say, it was a long time ago.
Today I want to recommend a couple of singles that I bought a million years ago
    Tahiti 80 - A Love From Outer Space (2001)
They are a French band. I remember buying it as a CD single in a small music shop in Seoul. I have no idea why I love this pop song, but I do. The love of this song has stayed with me for over 20 years.
    The second single is:
    Wire - Kidney Bingos (1988)
Why are Wire not spoken of as one of the most influential bands? Out of all the different stuff that they have done, this is a pop song. I will just let that sink in. This is Wire creating a fantastic pop song. If there was any justice, Wire would have already refused there induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I cannot believe that this is well over 30 years old and it still sounds so fresh. That opening guitar chord sequence.....Enjoy
    Keep up the good work.

Hey David, you'll be pleased to know that some time ago on Into The Music Andy reacted to Kidney Bingos: ruclips.net/video/hNrSKBJN0hw/видео.html
I'm a big fan of Wire (hence part of our opening tune) and echo everything you said.
      Cheers, Jon.

      @@theaudiophiles7889 Dear Chaps
Interesting analysis of Kidney Bingos. I must confess that I thought that the lyrics had a bit of Brion Gyson about them.
It makes sense (cut up) it makes no sense (analysis and thought) it - almost - makes a new sense.
      Many thanks
