Man, I love this song. It's not the first Stranglers song I listened to but it's the one that really got under my skin and sold them to me. Loved Andy's reaction to this and he got the whole punk/pop crossover part spot on. JJ's bass though... lovely.
Stranglers are up to now one of my favorite bands ever. I love especially their first three studio albums plus the live one "X-cert". As you mentioned, i love the bass playing and the genius keyboard work of Dave Greenfield, too. "Peaches" and "Princess of the streets" from the first one are worth the listening.
This track is probably my favourite, it has been my ringtone and always gets a nod of approval when it goes off. Nice n Sleazy is a close second though. Next up should be Down In The Sewer :) Cheers all.
Their best song is. "Will you just take a look over there. (Where?) There. Is she tryin to get out of that Clit ares" And Andy would obviously love the Bass.
Hi Audiophiles, I've been viewing for 12months and I must say you the closest to a John Peel Show on RUclips, as a request how about "Unburden"off Shrinkwrap by the Gang of Four or To He'll With Poverty?
I agree that this channel is the closest to John Peel on RUclips. Anyone from Britain will who lived through the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s and wanted to hear stuff that you would never hear on mainstream radio will understand exactly what I mean.
Can I slip in a request here? Cathal Coughlan, Amused as Hell. I know you get inundated with requests, but if you could fit this one in sometime I would love to hear your thoughts on it.
This is a classic from my youth. Awesome tune. You heard the Violet Femmes version.... minus the keyboards? It was in a film, which I can't remember the name of at the moment.
They had a hit single in the UK every year from 1977 to 1989 (or more than one). They had 40 odd hit singles in the UK . This was top 10 in the uk I think
Mr. Bass Man, you've got that certain somethin', Mr. Bass Man, you set that music thumpin'. We Didn’t Start the Fire, but with menace. I've always enjoyed that mad Manzarek-inspired organ. I too lost interest about the time of Golden Brown. Like Alphabet Spaghetti, but with characters from the plays.
The Stranglers' publishers threatened Elastica with court action in 1995, over the use of the main riff of this song, on their single "Waking up." Elastica finally settled out of court.
bit of useless trivia....at the end of every episode of the brilliant Kermode and Mayo movie podcast they give thanks to, amongst others, The Great Omera and Sancho Panza.

Great review please don't wait so long for the next stranglers review. Anything from the first four albums is just fine by me. Thank you.
Totally agree 👍

There’s a band from that era called the X-Certs. Is that some kind of slang? Can you illuminate me?
Excerpt it means
Try anything, if not everything, from the Rattus Norvegicus album - their first and a real surprise at the time

I agree LLJ. Another vote for Down in The Sewer but anything off the first few albums would be a great pick. Take care guys.
@@gr3053 Anything from 1977 to 82 including b sides, plus plenty afterwards is their great stuff
Don’t know if you realised, neither of you mentioned it, that “bouncing ball” intro was done on the bass.
Ironically sampled by Elastica in 'Waking Up'.

'Peaches' you mean?
@@hughblack6831she’s got me going up and down. Lol
Hands down my favorite Stranglers tune! It was used in an episode of the Umbrella Academy. Season 3 .

Thanks Jabber for your kind words. High praise indeed. Your request has been added to the list.
Cheers, Jon.

@@theaudiophiles7889 film and music buff...
I’m stuck in this era. ‘77-‘81
The intro is JJ on bass.
Well Elastica is nice ❤
Intro/outro heaven!

Golden Brown is GENIUS. and it is unlike 99.9999% of pop songs!
Wait until you get Golden Brown. Or Hanging Around.
“Have you all got you Crackerjack pencils…?”
Peaches is genius

do elastica get royalties?

Stranglers were more Punk Plus. just not the Pistols version.
