I used to live a few doors down from an eccentric looking man, and never knew who he was. A few years went past and then this man's face was suddenly all over the news (cos he sadly died) and I was completely taken aback, cos my close neighbour was non-other than the Stranglers keyboard player Dave Greenfield!
My goodness. What an experience that must have been living near Greenfield. Thanks for sharing that and for stopping by to watch the video.
The "Walk On By" cover is just phenomenal. It's easily one of my favorite covers.
Couldn't agree more! Thanks for watching and commenting.
Yes. It conveys the feeling of getting chucked by a lover better than Dionne Warwick's.
One of my favourite bands. Thanks for sharing. Cheers.
The Stranglers are my favourite Punkband ever.
You are One of the sweetest Stranglers Fan i've seen.
Many thanks for your kind comment and watching. Glad you enjoyed the video as a Stranglers fan.
I love your enthusiasm and passion, you have great knowledge and taste in music. 😊 ❤
Thanks for your kind comment and stopping by to watch the video. Much appreciated.
what a progression from Down in the Sewers to Golden Brown. Wonderful band!
They are still going strong after all these years too. Thanks for watching.
Every Stranglers album is a different listening experience keeping it fresh was there recipe for longevity ! Fabulous band.
Couldn't agree more. Thanks for watching and commenting.
One of my all time favorite bands along with Killing Joke and Public Image Ltd.
Love Killing Joke and PIL too! Thanks for stopping by and watching.
Sexy Beast is one of my favorite movies ever, Ben Kingsley deserved an Oscar for that performance way more than for Gandhi. If you’ve never seen this movie, do yourself a favor and find it
Couldn't agree more. The scene of him getting on the airplane is priceless! Thanks for watching.
I was about 14 years old when I first saw them play the Apollo in Glasgow. The support act was The Skids. Anyway I was hooked. By the way I haven't seen the movie Sexy Beast, but I'll search it out now. Thanks for your interesting views 👍
Wow. That must have been such an amazing experience. Thanks for sharing that and commenting.
Interesting to learn so much about The Stranglers. RIP Jet Black and Dave Greenfield. Still such an awesome band. Agree that the Dark Matters album is terrific. Thanks for the video.
"Sparking A Stranglers Frenzy" is the title of my new book, actually. 😁
In a way, life is always about the heroin and the girl. We just choose our heroin. And our girl. That came off a nudge heavier than expected😇
Enjoyed! I had not heard "Golden Brown" for far too long. Cheers!
Hey I stumbled on this video by accident also, I love the the Stranglers too and like Aurial Sculptures very much. I been watching this American girl Melinda something, her videos about vinyl records but her accent just drives me nuts 😂 so good to hear an lovely English speaking woman doing reviews. Keep up the good work your amazing 😊 thank you
Pleased to hear you came across my channel by accident. Many thanks for watching and for your kind comment. Hope you'll stop by again.
Wonderful examination of a top tier band!! I love, love, love, The Stranglers! Sexy Beast was also a way into their music and their album Live in London was a big one for me that I played endlessly for years. Such energy, musical chops, poetry and truth in their songs, rogueish and cheeky style. The list of just killer songs of theirs is endless. Strange Little Girl, Golden Brown, Punch and Judy, Hanging Around, No More Heroes, Down in the Sewers, Nice and Sleazy, Get a Grip on Yourself, Midnight Summer Dream, Burning Up Time. Just a few among many great songs!
Thanks for stopping by and commenting. Couldn't agree more...it really is endless. There are just too many Stranglers songs that are brilliant. Just too many to list in a short video I love Mad Hatter too!
I always loved Bitching.
Still a fan. Saw them last year with their new fantastic keyboard player.
Miss Dave, and now Jet.
Yes Toby Hounsham is amazing. The band is still making great music.
I started to listen to The Stranglers in 1977 when I was 21. One of my many all time favorite English bands. I saw The Stranglers in concert around 1983/1984 in my hometown of Santa Barbara, California at the Santa Barbara County Bowl. They opened up for Roxy Music also one of my many favorite English bands as well. That was a fantastic concert by both bands.
Had no idea they opened for Roxy Music. In the US, it seems they were overshadowed by the Sex Pistols, The Clash and more commercially successful punk and progressive rock bands. That SB County Bowl concert sounds amazing! Thanks for stopping by and watching.
@@retromusings What I found out that was interesting, I watched an interview with Hugh Cornwell a while back on RUclips and he said he really liked Roxy Music and Bryan Ferry, founder and frontman of Roxy Music. During the early years of The Stranglers they did get into some fights with some band members of other groups when they were on the same bill in the nightclubs. Especially Jean Jacques Burnel (who is a Karate expert) and Hugh Cornwell. I'm not really sure if keyboardist Dave Greenfield did, and I don't think drummer Jet Black did. Jet Black was in his 40's during the early years of The Stranglers, he was the oldest member.
The Stranglers were the real deal and sounds like they liked to keep it real too with other bands! haha. Thanks for sharing that.
Black and White my all time fav.
That was such a lovely honest analysis, really great. I grew up with the Stranglers. I was a young boy when they became famous, my older brother would bring their first ever vinyl releases into our house and we all loved them. I remember returning home from school one day and I caught my Mother dancing around the living room to 'Peaches' full volume! By 1979 I was just old enough to start seeing the band live. First gig was the Stranglers at Wembley stadium supporting The Who - August 79. The rest is history.. But I do agree with you,,, - Dark Matters is great! Stranglers 2023 eh.. who would have thought there would still be a Stranglers band (of sorts) today???
What a wonderful experience growing up with The Stranglers playing in your home. Love it. Thanks for sharing such a personal story.
@@retromusings ♥️
What a great mum. She was dancing around to the Stranglers. My mother wouldn't have done that. She liked Pussycats My broken Souvenirs in 1977.
your video here is so well informed. I love the Stranglers. Only got to see them live once. Warfield Theater in San Francisco maybe 87'? One of the best shows I had seen. Still remember them fondly and still listen to their records. I need to find a copy of Aural Sculptures. "skin deep " was my introduction to them. Miss that KQAK. Thanks for doing the good work.
Oh wow. That must have been amazing to see them at the Warfield. I didn't manage to catch them live and yes, Skin Deep was my intro to them too. I then discovered their punk albums which was fun. Thanks for commenting.
Great synopsis. To me, the first four albums are their most definitive and best work. They're the only iteration of the band I ever listen to. I was very lucky to see that line up live on a number of occasions and their energy and virtuosity were peerless. 'Black And White' is considered to be the first post-punk album and is way more gothic than any band that purports to be gothic. It's so dark but with tongue very much in cheek. Never heard any music from any other artist that's remotely similar to that unique phase.
Well said about "so dark but with tongue very much in cheek". My introduction to The Stranglers began with the Aural Structure album and I worked my way backwards and discovered their punk lps after that. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Huge fan of The Stranglers. Their punk version of Walk On By is an absolute classic so I'm pleased you mentioned it in your video. It's my fav. It was a limited edition promo 7inch that was a bonus with the Black and White album. Skin Deep, Punch and Judy, Mad Hatter and Golden Brown are fantastic too. Your videos are very informative. Thanks for sharing.
Mad Hatter is definitely a cool song. Thanks for watching and commenting.
thanks for another great video....i might be in a minority ...but my favourite album by The Stranglers is The Raven. Such an amazing
sounding record with great songs such as Nuclear Device...Baroque Bordello and ice to name a few. I seem to recall the furore over Golden brown...they were kept off top spot by The Jams A town called Malice.
Yes. The Raven is also an awesome album. I don't have the vinyl but I've been able to enjoy it on YT and on cd. There are just too many great Stranglers songs...too many to mention. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Early Stranglers great stuff. But 'Life Shows No Mercy' still a fav of mine.
That song is just so awesome. The Aural Sculpture album is amazing with so many other great songs like "Skin Deep", "Let Me Down Easy" etc. Thanks for stopping by and watching. Couldn't agree more that their early stuff was just as fantastic. Thanks for watching.
🙂
Can't believe you haven't got or never mentioned The Raven, for me, their best release. But you're obviously a fan. So hats off to you.
My bad about The Raven. Aiming to get a copy to add to my collection. As you say the music is amazing. Thanks for watching and commenting.
@@retromusings See if you can get the version with the 3D cover.
@@retromusingsyeah Raven is essential
I saw them on the Gospel according to the Meninblack tour.. Fantastic
It's an album that causes arguments among fans but it is really interesting..
Waltzinblack etc.
Apparently Cornwells fave Stranglers lp
Cheers
Great video. Like The Stranglers
Thanks for stopping by and watching!
Stranglers are amazing and an under-rated band. Their Epic Records years were the best. Great video.
Couldn't agree more. Many thanks for watching and subscribing.
999 is another one of those kinda obscure punks bands not many know about
Oh. Thanks for the heads up on 999.Will check them out. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Yes absolutely, also produced by the great Martin Rushent and also on United Artists… great times !
nice info, i also like the song SPAIN from aural sculpture, grtz from the netherlands 🇳🇱
Discovered them from the No Wave comp when I was a kid. They were my favorite on that album
I really enjoyed this. The Stranglers are so underappreciated. Rattus Norvegicus is the best "punk" album of all time for me. Thanks - Richard
Couldn't agree more! Thanks for watching and commenting.
Wonderfully smart (and very beautiful) lady. Ladies and losers, I give you THE STRANGLERS (through a perfect filter: she's so great)
Let this be known all over our world.
Lovely lady!
Many thanks for stopping by and watching. Hope to see you again on my channel.
Thank you for showing these great albums. I really love that version of "Walk on By." My favorite Stranglers album is The Gospel According to the MenInBlack. I got to see them live in 1980 when they were touring for that album. At one point during the show J.J. Burnel was getting annoyed by a photographer in front of the stage, so as the song ended, he pointed at the offender, dropped his bass, jumped off the stage, and chased him out of the club! The rest of the band, not knowing what to do, just milled around the stage until J.J. casually strolled back into the club and rejoined them. I heard afterwards that he tackled the photographer in the parking lot and took the film out of his camera!
I need to revisit the Gospel album. And lucky you to have seen them in action in 1980. Interesting footnote about JJ and the photographer. Thanks for sharing that.
Thank you for posting this. Great!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for stopping by and watching.
I'm a Stranglers fan myself and have a healthy collection of their records. Duchess is my fave tune by them and Walk on by is a great song too 👍👍👍
Their last LP Dark Matters was quite enjoyable.
Loved seeing the Quadrophenia soundtrack behind you too 👍👍👍
Thanks for watching and commenting. Great to "meet" other Stranglers fans in the vinyl community. You have a wonderful RUclips handle name. Like the sandwich reference!
I'm a Stranglers fan but just the 70, s music I'm a record collector and I've got a few of their early singles
No More Heroes, Grip,5 minutes, Duchess . They're UK A lable demo 7 " releases..
I've also got a couple of Japanese imports of which are white lable United Artists promos
Duchess, Something Better Change.

Yes the channel name.....I like daft and quirky names and sayings etc... a butty is an old British nickname for a sandwich. It originates from a french word meaning "to butter".....bread for example 👍👍👍
I first seen the stranglers in 1979 and have seen them almost every single year up to their last full u.k gig tour at the 02 in Birmingham and they were still awesome. They are without doubt the best live band I've ever seen. I've met j.j , hugh and spoke briefly to baz a few years back while he was entering the 02 in Birmingham with Dave. I also met Paul Roberts and spoke with the band after they played an instore appearance at the H.M.V store in Birmingham city centre. I'm certain one day the stranglers will get the full credit they deserve, but if not, to me they will always been the greatest band I've ever followed .
Wow. What incredible concert experiences. Thanks for sharing that.
I saw them around 1979 and the show was great. After the show, the band was coming up some stairs we were going down. I said "great show" and the bass player growled and bit my arm (not hard, but a cool moment.
My goodness. Brilliant story. Thanks for stopping by.
Nice to see the actual albums. I lost track of mine long ago. Black and White changed my life.
I have Black and White too. Fantastic album! Thanks for stopping by and commenting.
RUclips recommended this video to me. Glad it did. Fantastic video about The Stranglers. Love their whole body of work. My favourites are No More Heroes, Golden Brown and Let Me Down Easy which was featured in the movie Hardcore Henry. I Had no idea about the harpsichord in Golden Brown! Just subbed your channel.
Many thanks for watching, commenting and subscribing.
Fantastic! I love The Stranglers. A very underratted band IMHO. If you haven't read it, do check out Song By Song - by Hugh Cornwell. It's a breakdown of all the songs when he was in the band. It gives some brilliant insight, especially if you read about a track as you listen to it. 😀
Couldn't agree more. I'm going to look out for Hugh Cornwell's book. Love to read it. Thanks for the heads-up on that.
A Stranglers marathon sounds like a great way to spend an evening! Love the Stranglers very underrated band! Whatever happened to, all the heroes? all the Shakespearoes? They watched their Rome burn….amazing!! Great video take care cheers
Glad you approve. Thanks for watching.
They seemed to straddle the line between new wave and punk at the outset but "I Feel Like a Wog" is as good a blistering punk song as any in 1977. Of course the use of an organ was what set them apart from every other punk band back then and was startling to hear by us punks in 1977.
Agreed. The organ was the game changer for them. There are just too many great songs by this band and they're still going strong. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I love your videos! Our music tastes are so similar you could be my doppelganger. Sexy Beast is amazing too. Looking forward to your next video.
Thanks for watching. Really appreciate your comment and fun to know we have shared musical taste! :-)
Thanks for the insight. Your channel is my favorite. I love your knowledge of this stuff. Much appreciated.
Jeff
Many thanks watching and for your kind and encouraging comment.
I go back to 77 with the 'Men in Black' and have probably seen them in all forms 25 times over the decades, I sorta think of them more of my growing up years than a band I liked. I first saw them at 15, I ran off from home, at the Roundhouse I think but it all get a bit confusing. I also saw XraySpex at the Lysyum when they got kicked out and SLF at the 100 club before the police repatriated me to Tyneside.. Saw them many times since, the Forum about 1992 where they played the whole of Rattus (there is no I), Brighton Pavilion, Newcastle 02 etc. My claim to fame is going to see Hugh play the Horn of Plenty in St. Alban's around 2010/11 and a small venue and not a huge audience but He was brilliant, so much so that I stayed back till like 2am and my cab cost me £85 for 10 miles the cnuts. He was a Gentleman and a really funny guy who was just so up front I have stories but they stay with me apart from JJ giving Sid Vicious a good hiding, true and He only defended himself but a 3 dan Black Belt?? Nuff said!!
Wow. What an amazing experience so vividly remembered. Who knew JJ giving Sid a bit of a bashing! Thanks for stopping and watching.
I love your passion. Peace and love.
Many thanks for stopping by and watching. Happy holidays!
Skin Deep is my favourite Stranglers song, although my favourite album is Black and White.
Interesting to hear your thoughts and the background information on the songs.
hello rm, very enjoyable and informative video about rhe stranglers, i was never a big fan of punk rock, but i know the stranglers were quite popular during this time and had a big following. i want to check out some of there albums as i don't think i have anything by them in my collection. thanks for sharing! take care
Glad you enjoyed it. I think The Clash and The Sex Pistols received a lot more attention in the US back in the day. The Stranglers are still very popular in Europe. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I am going to Hugh Concert tonight in London
Islington Town Hall.
Wow. Fantsstic!!!
Thanks for sharing your video. My wife and I flew over from Canada to attend the three Spanish gigs recently and they were fantastic!!!! Met some amazing people in our travels too.
Love Gospel According to the Meninblack! The 12" singles of Skin Deep, No Mercy and Let Me Down Easy are just magnificent. My fave band already booked in to see them next year (24) on tour. And you are spot on re Baz.
I don't have that album. Will certainly check it out. Thanks for noting it. Their music catalogue is pretty impressive. Thanks for watching.
HI 👋 I'm viewing from New Zealand, and I liked Punk 🧷 Rock back in the late seventies. The Stranglers were a favorite band of mine then. Their debut album is brilliant. By the 1980s they had changed. I like Skin Deep though. There is a fantastic video on youtube of them performing their first single Get a Grip on Yourself in 1977. The quality of the clip is good. Good on you for posting this. From Carl.
It's amazing the band is still going strong. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Let me down easy was the song Hugh wrote as a tribute to JJs father's death. There were two levels to golden brown, heroin and Hugh's American girlfriend but Hugh described it as a musical Rorschach test meaning the character of thel iistener had their own interpretations, which he thought was a creative way to get debate on each person's interpretation. Don't bring Harry from the raven is another heroin song where you could imagine Harry to be a person as well as the drug. Harry being the nickname for heroin in the UK. The Stranglers were mavericks, nothing was taboo which didn't help them commercially.. Strangely over the years I've met many people who loved them but wouldn't admit it due to their image. They could have played it safe and been one of the most commercially successful world bands but they wanted total control and wanted each album to sound differently to the next one even if the formula was selling records they would charge it they never bowed to the record company so they had integrity but at times their own worst enemy.I think now people are now starting to appreciate how great a band they were/are but the music press hated them because they didn't play ball but the Stranglers would write songs about anything that was happening at the time they were composing their albums the way they wanted to and the record company was happy because they sold a lot of records. Basically the Stranglers wrote a musical diary of their life at any given time.
Thanks very much for the interesting insight into the songs.
Think I’m in love! Beautiful mature East Asian lady that loves The Stranglers! What a combo!
Thanks for your very kind comment. Glad you enjoyed The Stranglers vid. Happy Easter and thanks for stopping by to watch.
Excellent video of one of the best punk /new wave bands ever. The Stranglers are just awesome and glad to see you mentioned "Dark Matters" too.
Thanks for watching and yes, the Dark matters lp is fantastic.
That's a great review of some of your favourites .
I have all of those albums , plus the Raven , which is great , and Norfolk Coast and Giant , which are also great .
I was lucky enough to see them in Toronto in the late 80's , and they were terrific .
I think that Dave Greenfield ( RIP ) was their secret weapon .
His keyboard flourishes elevated the songs . ( I feel the same way about the Cars keyboard player , Greg Hawkes )
The rest of the band is excellent as well , of course .
It's hard to pick a favourite album , maybe Dreamtime , or their first album , but my favourite song by them is the excellent No More Heroes , followed closely by Always the Sun .
Thanks for the video !!!
Couldn't agree more about Greenfield being the "secret weapon". Ibid with Greg Hawkes for the Cars. "Let's Go" would certainly not be the same if Hawkes wasn't at the keyboard. Thanks for sharing your Stranglers experience. Must have been amazing to see the in concert. Thanks for stopping by and watching.
@@retromusings You are most welcome . Yes , they were great in concert , and Dave Greenfield's performance was tremendous . Thanks !
what a fantastic in depth view and full of knowledge as well, i,m a strangler since 1977 , top 3 5 minutes /down in the sewer /Ugly, their early concerts were as edgy and as wild as you could get , we all miss Dave and Jet, but hard to believe when aural sculpture came out I thought thats it thats the end
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching and commenting.

They are indeed, I got to see them in Kilmarnock grand hall around 5 years ago, be lucky if 200 people were there! They played all their songs impeccably, incredible musicians.
Oh wow. Would have loved to see them perform live. Thanks for sharing your experience and stopping by to watch the video.
Wow ! You really know your Stranglers stuff. I can't imagine you as a punk rocker in those days. Great review, and best wishes from Scotland.

I have just subscribed to your channel and look forward to catching up on your previous posts! I saw the Stranglers live twice back in the late 70s/early 80s in Sydney Australia...they were such a great live band....seeing you show the twelve inch SKIN DEEP 45 record was a sad reminder of my mistake in letting it go.....silly me!!
Gosh. I feel your pain regarding letting go that "Skin Deep" album. My original record collection was lost a long time ago and I've recently recovered 25% of it. I have never seen The Stranglers in concert. Wonderful you had that experience! Thanks for stopping by and watching.
I keep trying to tell anyone about, Bless you (Save you, Spare you, Damn you) So many though I think all are a favourite.
Many thanks for stopping by and watching. Great that there are still plenty of Stranglers fans out there.
Glad to have you as a fellow fan. The fact that you took the time to make this video, is an honor to the band. I had a friend give me a cassette recording of No More Heroes, and then another turn me on to Aural Sculpture album. I went down the wormhole listening to them. You make want to buy every early album now. Did not have the money back then, early teenager. I listen to a wide range of music. Classical, swing, early country, rock, punk, post punk, synth, new age, and grunge, it’s all music to be enjoyed.
Luckily we can enjoy so much music online via YT etc. Have fun exploring all those Stranglers albums. They are still going strong. Thanks for sharing your experience and stopping by to watch the video.
Visited them twice when they were recording la folie album, got shown around the manor studio and had a game of snooker with hugh brilliant musician. You forgot to mention that Hugh has had a successful solo career and last LP moment of madness is brilliant
That must have been a fun and amazing experience. Thanks for sharing that. And yes, my bad for not mentioning Hugh's post-Strangler career. I listen to his music online but I don't have any of his albums on vinyl. I enjoy watching his various performances on YT. Such an amazing artist. Thanks for stopping by.
This was an interesting overview of your Stranglers records. You speak very enthusiastically about the band, I can hear you are a big fan. I have some compilations and live albums by them but sadly no studio albums. Coincidently, I have seen some other videos on RUclips of people showing Stranglers records this week. Maybe it is divine providence directing me to get some of their albums. :-) Which Stranglers record would you suggest I start with?
The Stranglers are on a big European tour on the continent and they have just re-issued a limited edition marbled vinyl of their Norfolk Coast album which has already sold out. The band has a great Facebook page. For me, Aural Sculpture and No More Heroes are my favourite albums. The former being prog rock and the latter punk so a taste of both. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Hi, John. You can't go wrong with any of their first four albums ( Rattus Norvegicus, No More Heroes, Black and White, The Raven). I think , in essence, they consistently contain their definitive and best work. They had the musical talent and ideas to change over the years ( out of necessity to survive) while a lot of their contemporaries didn't and fell away. Although they did still manage to put down some classic tracks, I feel that the need to stay commercially viable and relevant compromised them in many ways.
Enjoyed this episode; thank you... I love the relatively recent Lp "Giants" from them.
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Well I found your channel by chance! The Stranglers are my favourite band and yes a large body of work! An album which is very good is 2004s Norfolk Coast Baz Warne's first appearance and the last appearance of singer Paul Roberts Who got them through the wilderness years of the 90's it's a remarkable album with echoes of the past and the future direction they have gone on to!!
You have wonderful taste seeing the soundtrack to Quadrophenia behind you!! I'm also a Who fan!! Great stuff!
Ian
There was a limited edition re-issue of the Norfolk Coast album I think last year but it was sold out in nanoseconds! I don't have it on cd or vinyl and have been listening to it online. As you say, it's a good album navigating the band through the "wilderness " years. Thanks for stopping by and watching.
Sexy Beast great film, Stranglers great group 👌👍big up Guildford
Gllad you agree! Thanks for stopping by to watch.
Never got to see them. Not from a large metropolitan area, so the opportunity to see bands that were not huge attractions was not there. Back in the early 80’s, there were bands that played at upstate New Colleges, I was upfront and center for the Alarm at SUNY Geneseo. The best was The Clash, 1982, SUNY Binghamton West Gym, the energy and euphoria was something that will never be repeated.
Oh wow. What an amazing experience seeing The Clash. Love them. Wonderful you have such vivid memories of the concert.
Great review ! "Skin Deep" is one of my all time favourite songs ! I can never forget the first time I heard it !
Many thanks for watching and pleased to know there are others who like "Skin Deep" too.
The video for "Skin Deep" was the catalyst for my subsequent interest in The Stranglers. They were never as big here (The U.S.) as in the U.K. Upbeat music with dark lyrics has always intrigued /interested me. I enjoy watching all your uploads, well done !
Great band every member is totally unique. Are you in USA? did they make it there?
Well said and certainly each member was/is unique and came together to produce incredible music. The band made out to San Francisco in the late 80s but I didn't manage to see them. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Sexy Beast is a brilliant film "I won't let you be happy, why should I?" "no, you're going to turn this opportunity yes"

Please tell me you have also got "The Raven"
Oh no. I don't have it in my collection. It's a great album for sure. Just too many wonderful Strangler songs out there to mention in a short video. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I love your take on the Stranglers. You mention the Baroque gestures and harpsichord; another band, this one from the mid-60s called The Left Banke had some big hits using Baroque sounding motifs. You may want to check out "Walk Away Renee," "Pretty Ballerina," or "Shadows Braking Over My Head," by the Left Banke, if you haven't yet heard them. Also, the punk/ "new wave" (ugh!) band Penetration hired Steve Lilywhite to produce their Coming Up For Air album, and I would guess that Steve had something to do with introducing a very Baroque-ish break (what's that? a minuet?) into the waltz-y tune called "Party's Over" -- Anyway, glad to have discovered your channel.
Wow. Many thanks for all this information. Will check out all your suggestions as I really do love the sound of the harpsichord. Thanks for taking the time to watch the video. Hope to see you again.
@@retromusings My pleasure. The tune "I've Got Something On My Mind" by the Left Banke has harpsichord, and about 1:30 into the Beatles "In My Life" (on Rubber Soul) you can hear their producer George Martin doing a nice harpsichord passage. Cheers.
"Let Me Down Easy" and "Skin Deep" are legendary songs, so too of course is "Golden Brown" but unfortunately that one fades after you've heard it on radio for the 10,00th time. They certainly made a killer out of "Walk On By" - did you know early on they started playing that and a cover of the Kinks "All Day and All of the Night" so they had something the audience knew rather than their own songs? I have a couple of RUclips vids of live gigs of the original and current lineups saved, play them over and over. Their live versions of songs like "Something Better Change", "A Peasant in the Big Shitty" and "Never to Look Back" are awesome. Rattus Norvegicus is a pretty solid effort for a first album.
They have so many fantastic songs. I just highlighted some of my favs. I enjoy watching their live shows on RUclips. Thanks for stopping by.
thanx
Thanks for watching.
My first gig, those chaps were!
Wow. That's great. I've never managed to catch them in concert.
@@retromusings It's one original member these days, unfortunately. Caught 'em in late '81, when they were really struggling to land another chart hit. One of the new songs sounded unusual and catchy, I thought... three months later, they're at no.2 with it (at which point I caught them live a second time)
The band certainly worked very hard to get the credit they deserve for their wonderful music. Thanks for sharing your experience.
Lady Linda by the Beach Boys used a harpsichord, just so you know.
Had no idea. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Your very sweet beautiful xx
You're too kind. Thanks for watching and stopping by my channel.
You are of Asian heritage ? Beautiful
I think of them as a 70s band
Thanks for stopping by.
There’s harpsichord by Nicky Hopkins on the Kinks Session Man
Oh wow. I had no idea. Will check that out. Thanks for stopping by and watching.
@@retromusings the song is a slap at Jimmy Page. He was a session rhythm guitarist for You Really Got Me then claimed he had done the solo which he hadn’t. That rumor lasted years.
Love Nicky Hopkins so much, thanks!

Have you got Black And White and The Raven?? The Raven is their best one!!!!
I have the Black and White album on vinyl. I don't have The Raven just yet but I'm able to enjoy it on CD. The vinyl version is on my wish list. Their catalogue of music is pretty big. Exciting to know what other Stranglers' fans' favourites are. Thanks for watching.
Bjork is bound to have used a harpsichord
Thanks for stopping by.
I am not sure how a Stranglers fan could jump from 'No More Heroes' (1977), and miss their best LP, 'Black and White' (1978), their great live LP, 'X-Cert', (1979), (as another person pointed out) their fantastic 'The Raven' (1979), and 'The Gospel According to the Meninblack' (1981), to 'La Folie'. I saw the band live twice between 'The Raven' & 'The Gospel...' but, after 'La Folie', I stopped listening to the band.
Thanks for watching and sharing your Stranglers experience
The Stranglers were a revelation to me as a teenager in 1977. I just loved the menace! However, despite being a punk myself, I could never reconcile their music to the punk movement - it was too sophisticated. Revisionists now see them as being more prog rock than punk and I can understand why. Musically, I think they have more in common with Kate Bush than The Sex Pistols.
Their music certainly evolved from the late 1970s to 1980s. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I have to disagree with you there. Punk was always about "doing it your own way, and sod the rest". Which is exactly what that band did. We had punkbands playing with folk musicians, classical musicians etc. This is why punk had such a massive influence on the music scene. Just look at how many different music styles originated from the punk scene. It was far from an "orthodox" style.
@@Draugh39 I agree there was a massive PUNK menace about the Stranglers, Punk became sanatised with a whole set of rules. An original Punk band who went there own way soon after.
Disagree live X certs punk classic
They were in many ways more of the late-sixties/early-seventies punk mindset like the Pink Fairies or the Hammersmith Gorillas.
It's strange how bands like Stranglers, Ramones,Clash Damned for example brought out classics in the late 70,s and then came the 80, s and their music became kinda forgettable 😡
I guess similar to fashion, music tastes can change and some bands evolve into a different genre? Thanks for watching and commenting.
Don't agree . Some music does sound dated but the stranglers never do . It's just a question of taste . Several stranglers songs are used on TV programmes even today
It’s not the music. It’s our age that does this. For me the 80s was top and mostly everything afterwards is forgettable... Every generation says this about the music they listened to when they were like 18.
