I'm glad someone listened to this banger of an album! This album was my intro to the band back when it was released. I dont remember if it was 2008 or 2009 when i was introduced to them, but so glad i had this album in my 20s to listen to!
I was 12 when this album released in 2008, and still so many of these songs get me so emotional. The way Jordan, the vocalist, writes lyrics touches my soul in such a deep way. Love this band and love the appreciation this album is getting.
Awesome reaction as always, Doug. I did not expect to see a La Dispute reaction on your channel but I am so, so excited that it's right here in front of me now. This is easily in my top 10 albums and when I saw the notification my heart fluttered a little, it's just so close to my heart. I think I commented on this 40s after it went live, so you can tell I was elated. My best friend and roommate in college introduced me to this album when we first met and it captured me instantly (he also gave me my first tattoo - La Dispute's flower - how appropriate). We would just listen to it on repeat for days and zone out to the music. The same friend took his own life a few years later and it just makes the passion, rawness, and emotion of every word and every note hit so much harder, ESPECIALLY the end of Andria... god damn. Jordan's lyrics and delivery, the instrumentation and layering, the pacing throughout every song and the album as a whole - everything just coalesces into a perfect project dripping with passion. It still sounds so clear 16 years later (the remastered sounds identical to the original release in my opinion). One of those albums I wish I could just forget only so I could hear it again for the first time but at the same time I don't want to lose the memories tied to it. Love your appreciation for music and willingness to react to such a wide plethora of albums and genres. I've searched for reactions to this album for so long just to relive the first listening experience but it being so old, so alternative, and so unknown, it was hard. I think I'm glad I couldn't find any earlier because your reaction is perfect. Love how you also came around to appreciate Jordan's voice as the album progressed. It just works so well with everything they've done here and I couldn't imagine it sounding any other way. I think you would like one of their later albums a lot as well, Rooms of the House. Wildlife is pretty good as well but it just felt different to me for some reason, I still can't really get into it. I think La Dispute is at their best when the production is peeled back layer by layer and every aspect of the song is on display without getting in its own way. Rooms of the House is very similar to Somewhere At The Bottom in that regard, they're just fully in their element and it feels very close to this album sonically while not being as heavy. Big shoutout to your subscriber who recommended this. Their description was spot on, especially about listening to the album as a whole on revisits. It's definitely best as a complete experience, especially considering it's a concept album. I haven't been on your stream in a hot minute but I'll have to make some time to check back in.
@@spacednation4807 I requested this one! I agree with the Wildlife take, I love king park and I see everything but the rest I couldn’t really get into. I did show him King Park after the Tallah album we recently did. Haven’t really heard anything after Wildlife though
as a la dispute mega fan-- i almost pushed rooms over wildlife. It's truly close but there's something extra about the wildlife story. it's an amazing story @@spacednation4807
@@Arkardos You should really check out Rooms of the House! It's not quite as raw or heavy as At The Bottom but it has a very similar vibe, both in the tone and lyrics. When it first released I didn't give it much of a chance, but that was a mistake. It's a beautiful album that feels like a true sequel to At The Bottom. And the production is so clean. While the rawness of At The Bottom works for its overall production, I felt like Wildlife went in the wrong direction - it just sounds like a pillar of sound. Rooms doesn't have that problem at all, it sounds great. I might have to request it for Doug!
Watching someone listen to this full album for the first time? prob one of my favorite albums of all time Andrea with the lap steel & Last Lost Continent with its build up are pure storytelling. Last Lost they build the riff up at the end slowly piece by piece. Never seen that done before. Scream singing in my car on an hour drive home to this album every week.
This is definitely one of my favorite albums of all time. Incredibly inspirational and one of the reasons I make music today. So sick to see someone's thoughts on it
Far and away their best album, and maybe my number 1 all time. The instrument arrangement compliments the story telling in a way that's superior to anything else you'll find.
Was this the remastered version of the album? Hard to tell through my phone speaker. If not, and if you enjoyed it enough, you should listen to the remastered "10 year anniversary re-release". It adds so much more clarity to the mix in my opinion.
Great reaction! I am sure you’ll start loving the first tracks as well, now that you’ve accustomed to their overall sound. Would love for you to listen to their follow-up album „Wildlife“, which for me is a conceptually and lyrically stronger album and musically at least on par with this album.
Everyone be doing wildlife, I'm so happy you chose this one instead. It's by far the one I return to most. I agree with chatter about Sad Prayers, my favourite. Your reaction might be the best on youtube, I really enjoyed this. I understand that the instrumentals are very strong, but I'm truly in love with the lyrics and vocal delivery.
Emotional, captivating, atmospheric. I think you put it perfectly. I get lost in La Dispute vocals and instrumentals. Lyrical poetry at its finest, in my opinion. Agree about the vocals. At first it is unexpected, incongruous and jarring. But the more you listen, get into the album, the themes, the concept, etc the more perfect it becomes and almost harmonious it becomes. I couldn't imagine La Dispute with anyone else's voice but Jordan's.
Would absolutely love to hear to do a full album reaction for Hail the Sun - Wake. It's got similarly incredible instrumentals, emotional vocals and lyrics, dynamism, but with a high pitch vocalist who is also the drummer.
You should review Travels and Empty Days & Sleepless Nights by Defeater. It's a really captivating story told through two viewpoints of an older and younger brother.
Absolutely stellar taste… if you like anything harder than that silent planet is…honestly top tier writing that I’d say is on par with la dispute or above it. And I have a la dispute tattoo so that’s a big compliment. Or hotel books never the same off the run wild young beauty album which is more in line with la dispute and defeater.
subbed and liked. no one ever reviews this album of La Dispute but its almost the best. as someone else said you gotta do wildlife
Dude there is one album review from I think a composer you should look for it very technical

A little late, but I don't really see this as multiple stories. It's one long story about divorce and after. At least, that's how i saw it.
