The closest comparison to another mountain goats album id make with this one is Beat the Champ I think. Especially with the examination of traditionally masculine fantasies yknow? Except I think an album themed action movies is a lot more accessible than one about pro wrestling, and not even the more well known characters

their best album in a decade, probably in my top 3 tMG albums overall - yeah, this is pretty handily my AOTY. just incredible that 30+ years and 20+ albums into this band's arc, JD is still writing songs that can stand alongside his best.

Stealing this joke from the comments of wage war because I thought it was funny: we always knew John would do it: he's written a song almost entirely out of imperative clauses

I'm going to see the Mountain Goats for the first time this weekend and I'm so glad this is the album they'll be touring. Their best since goths for sure.

Great album, great review! Admittedly, I thought this album was better in its back half

On the topic of dad rock starting off as a perjorative term, I think the embrace of "dad rock" as a nostalgic and more positive term has moved "butt rock" in to replace it as the repetive-and-uninspiring-radio-rock term.

You know, I'd normally agree, but I think there's a difference in attitude and sound - what's called dad rock is more positive and accessible, generally upbeat. Butt rock is closer to the post-grunge, angrier side - there's some overlap between acts, but a lot more similarities.

This and your Ethel Cain review are hands down your best videos of 2022 so far. I'm not very well-versed with The Mountain Goats, but I do agree with the majority that this is their best since Goths. Songwriting is impeccable, the band sounds rejuvenated and inspired after their somewhat middling run of material from 2019 to 2021, and it will likely go down as one of the more unique singer-songwriter records of 2022.
I also want to weigh in on the dad-rock discussion here. Like you, I have an interesting love/hate relationship with that whole subgenre. I absolutely love the run of albums Wilco had from 1996 to 2004 (especially Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, one of my favorite albums of all time), but all their material after has been hit-or-miss for me. My point is, sometimes I really like this style, and other times I cannot bring myself to care about it. However, John Darnielle and his bandmates made a diverse, moving, and genuinely awe-inspiring album that manages to take this so-called subgenre and stay true to its customs while refusing to get so insufferable with nostalgia that it rubs me the wrong way.
Anyway, I had fun contributing to this discussion and this was an amazing review. Keep it up!

I might have to give this album a listen!
Also, Wilco is my Dad’s favorite band of all time, surprisingly just above Springsteen, so your brief mention of them made me laugh 😂

By the sounds of it, this album came at the perfect time in the wake of Andrew Tate's rise and fall. Can't wait to hear it.
