John Green. Hank Green. John Darnielle. Neil Gaiman. Grace Helbig. Were all on one stage. At one time. There will be feasting. And dancing. In Jerusalem next year.
I love how you can see on John's face two separate thoughts. One being "this is in the top two moments of my life, and the other was about an hour ago." and the other being "don't throw up, don't fall. don't throw up, don't fall."
I thought that looked like them! A year later, if you see this, do you know why they are there? Did they go there? Just hosted? This video leaves me with so many questions about the vlogbrothers that I've only discovered 3 or 4 years ago!
Hello, from a year later! This event was a gathering of the Green Bros. fans. I think part of the occasion was to celebrate the year anniversary of John’s novel The Fault in Our Stars. In any case, they just had a huge gathering there with authors and musicians and appeared to have had a blast, if this video is any indication.
A friend of mine, a graphic novelist who has been through some tough as hell times, had a book release party at a local store that was just a blast. At one point he got up on stage with his brother & father-in-law and sang this song. He stopped part-way through, father-in-law still playing drums & brother playing bass, to tell the story of how he’d scrounged the money together to take his daughter to a local kids museum a few weekends before. He stopped by a store that was selling his books on consignment, and they said they had $15 for him or he could wait and come back to collect it all at once if they sold the last one. He said he could wait, took his daughter to the museum, and then an hour or so later she said she was hungry. She saw a sign and asked if they could have pizza. He almost reflexively said no, but then realized in that moment all he wanted was to make her day without a worry about money. “Yes! We can have pizza!” He walked back to the store that had his books for sale, to take them up on the $15. It was closed, lights out and doors bolted, with a sign saying it was permanently out of business. He then burst immediately into the chorus, and damn if I didn’t feel it.

@@EarendilStar I do know that John talks about the mountain goats constantly and totes that they are the ONLY band he listens to while he writes his books. My guess it it was arranged mostly because of that:)
@@alexkennedy9963 Thanks for the reply! So that explains why the Greens were singing along, but not why they were at Carnegie Hall? They seem to have been hosting something, something that allowed them to bring on family, friends, and agents after it was over?
There's this phenomenon of seemingly unrelated people I look up to jamming out to This Year on stage with The Mountain Goats. First Craig Finn, then Stephen Colbert. I've seen this video several times but didn't become aware of John and Hank Green until the past year thanks to TikTok. I finally revisted this video for the first time in awhile, and surprise, it's the Green brothers!
This made me cry so hard what is wrong with me... Look how happy the two guys that make ME so happy are here and its the band they love so much and this song and all the people that John and Hank love and wow I got way too emotional at this but its so cute
I'm going through my Tumblr archive and it brought me back to this. I remember being so excited when The Yeti and Katherine came on stage. The way Hank holds his camera by the strap is still so anxious-making. The whole thing is just so wonderful.
What a great amazing bunch of dorks, didn't know this existed. Some of the most meaningful people to me all in one room. This would've been the place to be.
I think I owe a bit of thinks to this moment for making my year awesome. When things were rough I just sang the chorus to myself. I am also glad this exists.
All John D. songs are live. If they find a broken cassette tape of his music in the year 2185 under the buried remains of a broken past and manage to get a sound out of it ... then even THAT John D. would be live.
This has got to be one of my favourites on RUclips. The kind heartedness roars across as did the engine on a Saturday Morning :) John Darnielle and John Green, you sirs are most truly bursting with awesome!
Ok, so there's this youtube channel called the vlogbrothers. Made up of two brothers, John and Hank Green. They have a massive following as they've been on youtube since the very early days. They put together this show.- John Green is a big Mountain Goats fan and a friend of Darneille which is why he's here, he's also a writer - which is where Neil Gaiman comes in - most of the other people are youtubers or friends of the brothers. I hope that explains at least a little of it. :)
True. But look at the context. It's a song about pushing through the hard times to get to the good ones. Everyone here feels like they're celebrating having finally made it through those hard times. The time for feasting and dancing has come.
That is so amazing. Like the Mountain Goats is John Green's favourite band, and he got to the place in life where he can not only know and be close personal friends with his hero, but perform onstage with him at his. own. show.
Some context would be useful. Besides John D (Mountain Goats) doing mainly the riff of one of his great songs, what is going on here/who are all these people/what's with all the people coming on stage and jumping up and down?
who are all this people besides john darniele and neil gaiman, and yet, what would neil be doing in a stage with john, and a stage like carnegie hall? I feel lost
This is so 2013. And I really, really miss 2013 ❤

john green is fan boying so hard lol
....so much he totally forgot he was married.
He's literally me
John and Hank Green are such a positive force in the world. To see them have so much fun singing along to the Mountain Goats makes me so happy.
I thought that looked like them! A year later, if you see this, do you know why they are there? Did they go there? Just hosted? This video leaves me with so many questions about the vlogbrothers that I've only discovered 3 or 4 years ago!

this is so awkward and amazing
It feels like a bad high school show and somehow that almost moves me to tearrs
These people give me life. They help me make it through my toughest times, and celebrate with me in my times of triumph. I love them so much.
I love this song, but I'm kinda embarrassed at how white people dance. Self-loathing is my curse.
Just stand still and move your feet, shake your midsection slowly… everyone else knows when a white boy is dancing
That’s coming from a white boy
John and Hank singing their hearts out just made my night

Rather late to this comment, but I think that is something that is right with you. And I hope it is still right with you.
You can tell this song means a lot to John
You really can.
NEIL FUCKING GAIMAN IS WITH THE MOUNTAIN GOATS OMG

I love how passionately John is singing
I'm going through my Tumblr archive and it brought me back to this.

The whole thing is just so wonderful.
Hank's dancing is just the cutest.
I am from 2021 and this STILL MAKES ME HAPPY- JUMPY HAPPY. THANK YOU MY ANGELS !!!!!!!
I'm so glad this exist. Because tonight I really needed it.
Hi I'm currently going through a tough time, I hope you made it
You can see how deeply connected John is to this song, this is wonderful.
The Katherine is painfully adorable rocking out to this.
Hell, they ALL ARE
I like that Neil retains his dignity.
John and Hank are SO into it!! I love it!
Also Hank dancing with his mom is adorable

So many of my favorite people on stage singing one of my favorite songs! I love how excited Hank is, pretty much on Cloud 9 right there!

Teared up at the happy john green here i've never felt so pleased watching someone so happy on screen before
Whenever I listen to this song I have to listen to multiple recordings of it in a row, and this is one of my favorites to come back to
When Hank was jumping up and down holding his camera with one hand, I had a mini heart attack.
This has got to be one of my favourites on RUclips. The kind heartedness roars across as did the engine on a Saturday Morning :) John Darnielle and John Green, you sirs are most truly bursting with awesome!
I'm in love with the joy of this moment.
Now I want all of my favorite songs to be played at John Green's celebrations. That was nice.
Got this recommended New Years day 2023. What a great way to start the year!
There's just so much happiness in this video. So much happy and so much awesome.
I remember this, what a great night... Here's to getting through many more years...

Yeah :) I nearly cried as well, it's so cool how far they have come and yet how humble they are
This was probably the best night of my life. I was 15 and on cloud 9.
I feel like we need a ten year reunion of this night

MY FAVORITE BAND AND THEN THE GREEN BROTHERS IN ONE VIDEO IS TOO MUCH FOR ME I CAN'T.
The Green bros are so pumped up! Ahaha!

The Mountain Goats are the antidote to The National.

Great version
the dude that does crash course is into mountain goats...interesting
That is so amazing. Like the Mountain Goats is John Green's favourite band, and he got to the place in life where he can not only know and be close personal friends with his hero, but perform onstage with him at his. own. show.
they're technically 4 of his top 5 favorite bands with number 4 being Hank Green and the Perfect Strangers
This song really hits differently with Hank's cancer diganosis.
Holy crap Neil.
Um can we talk about how every person on that stage is just SPECTACULAR
This song is so much better live, it's way more passionate.
I wish I could have been there :c
Fuck yeah Carnegie Hall -- LETS GO NERDFIGHTERS!!!
the greens, kimya dawson, neil gaiman and mom and dad all on one stage!
A Yeti sighting! DFTBA!
Also Don't Forget To Be Awesome!

No, they had a concert in Carnegie Hall because they could, and it was aptly named 'An Evening of Awesome'.
AAAAHHHHHHHHHH
id kill to stand on the same stage that john darnielle and andy kauffman and so many other great people have stood on.
Some context would be useful. Besides John D (Mountain Goats) doing mainly the riff of one of his great songs, what is going on here/who are all these people/what's with all the people coming on stage and jumping up and down?
Is Neil Gaiman being there related to the mountain goats at all?
