Saw them tonight in Glasgow. John played this during his solo set, said he couldn't give it his all unless we did NOT sing along with it. You could have heard a pin drop as two thousand fans gave him and the tune the respect they deserve. I'm guessing I was one among many of them with tears rolling down my face at the end. Stunning. Thanks John for making an old man cry. Xx
I hadn't heard it, was at the gig, finally looked up the setlist the now and that's how I ended up here. It hit powerful first time I heard it, glad to see it holds up on a relisten
I will always get chills when he sings: "It's good to be young, but let's not kid ourselves, it's better to pass on through those years and come out the other side with our hearts still beating, Having stared down demons and come back breathing." Thanks to John Green's best of the decade video for reminding me of this total heart ripping banger of a song.
listened to this song back in high school, hoping to get to the place i am, where i can say, i do love my life now, like you love yours, JD. thank you 😭❤️ it hits so different 9 years post-grad. this lyric is the one.
I love when he says, "It's good to be young, but let's not kid ourselves, it's better to pass on through those years and come out the other side with our hearts still beating." It's so true...can't wait until that day arrives. ;)
I was there to hear this performance in 2013, and I've circled back to it as the exact message I wish I could send that version of myself from my vantage point here in 2024. People were mean to her, but I always thought she was cool. People should have told her she was awesome instead of taking advantage of her. She was holding onto hope of better days coming, and when she did, she was right. We love our life now, and the painful memories only flex their power over us a little of the time. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for immortalizing this so I could hear it again in my hour of need.

@@samuelsmith7866 Could you tell me how to strum it? I play down,up,down, down, down. And I don't know if I play to fast or sing to slow but it's a struggle.
Full disclosure, the mountain goats were a band I'd long been advised to listen to but never got around to doing so. So I was watching the livestream and this song fucking blew. me. away. Of course I had to find it right away, and then was devastated to learn it was never recorded. So I definitely felt it necessary to share this one :)
I'm really surprised there aren't more cheers while he's playing. I know I would've screamed my heart out at "I hope the people who did you wrong have trouble sleeping at night"
Saw them tonight in Glasgow, (last night now, lol as it's 2am!) John said he was putting his trust in us not to sing along as he did a solo version of this. You could hear a pin drop as two thousand Glaswegians (and little old English me) gave him and the tune the respect they both deserve. Not ashamed to say, I was one among many with tears streaming down my face at the end. Awesome! Hope you and your son enjoyed the gig as much as I did, and I hope even more John played this for you. Xx
With all the badass metal i listen to you would never imagine that this man was one of my favorite musicians. And if i could write music this would be the kind.
I hope this is never on Spotify. I like that we have to work to discover it or that it arrives serendipitously. I hope he releases it in vinyl and donates the proceeds to a worthy cause or keeps them for the band.
After hearing this on the no-longer-live livestream I tried to extract it from the multi-gig file. For some reason I never finished. Thank you for doing the work for me and posting it here. This is one of the best songs I know.
I was watching the live stream also, and the blowing away moment for me came when he said he was about to play Pale Green Things. My jaw hit the floor.
I love The Mountain Goats, vlogbrothers, Nerdfighteria, and the whole damn world so much. I think this song would fit any of John (Green)'s books so easily and well. I love it so much.
Well, the two of you share a common passion for metal, then. If you want some good metal recommendations, you should check out his Last Plane to Jakarta blog if you haven't already.
It's inspiring to see a normal person with normal looks succeeding in the corporate world of modern music. Physical attraction is no measure to value the beauty of sound
I don't think you listened to the song. The song is not about him in the lyrics. If John has said that this song is about him, you should mention the source.
if you're a redditor, come chill out at /r/themountaingoats, this isn't spam cuz pickle sausages < see would a bot say that lol I didn't think so, people should have told you you were awesome :P

Emily DeMaioNewton did you make it?
@@sakuradeva555 I also want to know
Hey did you make it?
Well it’s been 7 years!
Hope you made it.
My friend from high school who took his life in September sent this link to me a few years ago and I will not ever forget him or this.
I’m so sorry to hear that. ❤️

This song saves lives, one way or another.
And now we sit at the ‘cool table’.
Chords:
D, A, Em, G
And in the bridge it goes:
Em, A, D, G, Em, A, D, A
I love this song so much!

Thank you, friend.
He even says at the beginning of this video that it isn't on a recording. Thanks for uploading it. I come back to this video regularly.
I really hope he buckles and puts this one on an album soon.
The Mountain Goats "rarities and unreleased" album is going to be one of his best, if it ever comes out in one package.
Kris Harsh 24 disc special edition
I prefer some of these being unreleased. It is nice to just have some of the different versions out there.
He won’t, he just said so on the Passaic 1975 episode of the podcast
Me too.
I love how truthful and passionate everything he sings sounds.
This song kills me everytime.
I'm really surprised there aren't more cheers while he's playing. I know I would've screamed my heart out at "I hope the people who did you wrong have trouble sleeping at night"
Going to see him next Saturday in Manchester, with my son. Can't wait

This is the first time I heard the mountain goats, instant love.

I definitely cried when he played this song in Oregon.
Me too when he played it in Glasgow this evening. Xx
DFTBA. The Mountain Goats are amazing. Thank you, John Green, for introducing them to me :D
Best version of this song. Jon is amazing

This will always be my favorite Mountain Goats song. Thank you!
crying so much, this song is so beautiful and so true to life and EMOTION
I was watching the live stream also, and the blowing away moment for me came when he said he was about to play Pale Green Things. My jaw hit the floor.
In tears here.
John never shirks the important issues, if you disagree with him, you are wrong
One of their best songs imo
This is the greatest song ever period.
What a beautiful song. I may have to procure an illegitimate download
The 90s, unknown. Early 2000 playing concerts in san diego. Now on my public radio.
How does this have only 1200 views? I have watched it 5 times myself
I'm so glad this got its own video. You sir/madam are made of awesome.

Ohhhh man, lump in my throat
Yes!!! I am so glad that a higher quality recording of this song exists now :D Thank you!

Got to see this song performed a week ago at the Festival for the Eno in NC! Love the Mountain Goats and thanks for uploading.
This is very therapeutic
Awesome, thank you very much for uploading! I haven't been able to find a good version of this song on youtube!
I've helped but for my own selfish reasons. Just can't seem to get enough Mountain Goats.
Same here! I just saw them on their most recent tour as well. It was moving to say the least.
They went wild at that point in the concert I saw today! :)
I had to send this to an old friend from high school. To paraphrase her, it was like getting punched in the stomach with validation.
Two people are having trouble sleeping at night.
You are awesome and deserved better.
I do truly love the Mnt Goats.
made me cry
thanks for this. really
He hasn't buckled yet but hopefully one day :)
Such perseverence.

@eliplaysgames unfortunately no. This is the best you're likely to find.

Which concert cause I was at a concert six days ago xD
Me too :'(
Parts of it are funny. A serious song can do that, as this one does.
anyone know what kind of guitar that is ?
Kinda looks like an ibenez and it has its signature bubbly warm sound, but hard to tell from back here
I take that back idk what kind it is
+easybuttonairsoft good point, it likely is an ibanez. John always plays the good ones. He played that one the last few times I saw them.
90% sure it's the Harmony he uses a bunch (he says a year after this post was created)
definitely a Harmony
13 downvotes??
Who's here after The Anthropocene reviewed?
I'm here after "Hard Week".
Not in the slightest, it is quite a serious song at the base of it.
This is how I am...the protagonist..my heart is this way. Maybe I've made mistakes, but in my heart, I have ALWAYS cared.
DFTBA
And you gathered all of this from a 3 minute song? This sounds more like projection than it does an accurate analysis.
This song reminds me a friend of mine who was bullied because of his ninja turtles lunchbox. He was very sad. I kill them all.
