Anyone else periodically forget about this album because it isn’t on spotify and then suddenly remember it and feel this overwhelming urge to listen to it and cry
Such a nostalgic EP for me. It was freshman year and I sustained a traumatic brain injury within the first month. Was living in the dorms, on a busy floor, but I would withdraw to myself, smoke weed and go to the library late at night to play Diablo 2 and listen to this album on repeat.
I know what you mean... i know what i mean anyway... i sustained a few alcohol related OD's and can tell you; The Mountain Goats may have saved me back then. I don't care if you wouldn't understand how much your music means to me, John. Just know it does if you ever read this for some reason.
Lost my health freshman year too. Moved far from home. Then I got crippled 2 months in, no explanation, lost the ability to walk on my own, lost control of my hands and suddenly I was so weak. I remember listening to the mountain goats so often, over and over, thinking of how I was trying my best. It does get better. It really does. Now I'm junior year and still can't walk without a cane, but I go to the roof of the engineering faculty at night in winter and sing the mountain goats as much as I want. Feels less alone.
Black Pear Tree is absolutely on the highest tier of all tMG releases. John lyrically and vocally in peak form with dazzling, diverse arrangements of sound. Every track is a stunner. 11/10
Echoing everyone else who said thank you for posting this! Black Pear Tree has become one of my all-time Mountain Goats songs. I never ever thought I would hear it live so it was incredibly special and emotional when tMG played it at a show in Buffalo a few years back.
it's because it was self-released, there's no record label to put it on spotify. same reason moon colony bloodbath or come come to the sunset tree aren't there. john could do it if he wanted to but it would probably have to transfer to merge or something. when devil in the shortwave and those EPs showed up on streaming this year they're just copyrighted to "the mountain goats" so its possible this one will appear someday.

I've been listening to this since 2016, the year it was posted. It's crazy to think of how much things have changed since then and yet I'm still an avid fan of this album and TMG as a whole.
This is one of the best things from the already incredible people involved, and it's baffling that it's available almost nowhere. Thank you for uploading it.
Thanks. Not familiar with John Vanderslice and some how I missed moon colony bloodbath first time round. 34 seconds into the first track, surrounded, had to come back and say thanks.
I absolutely love Moon Colony And I'm curious how you felt about the rest of it? I'd love to hear it for the first time again. I hear Pale White Moon Shines Down on Colorado and I'm hooked everytime.
In case anyone wonders the track listing is Black Pear Tree Mosquito Repellent Bring Our Curses Home Supergenesis Roger Patterson Van Thank You Mario but Our Princess Is in Another Castle
Black Pear Tree Lyrics: I dug a hole and filled it up with compost Rested on the cool grass for a minute I saw the future in a dream last night There's nothing in it I set the sapling in the hole Started gently tamping down the dirt I saw the future in a dream last night Somebody's gonna get hurt Somebody's gonna get hurt I hope it's not me But I suspect it's going to have to be I dug my heels in for the winter And I waited for the snow But something was stuck up in the clouds Something was stuck up there It couldn't let go And when its time came, I could see it happen Blossoms black and sweet as Texas crude I saw the future flowering like a ruptured vessel Somebody's gonna get screwed It won't be me Someday I am going to walk out of here free
Mosquito Repellent Lyrics: All day, all day Sweeping out the shards Do what I have to do Try to start anew But I, thought of you twice Couldn't help myself I don't know what I need Clutching and fingering the rosary beads But I try, try, try But I know I can't let go Try, try, try, but I know I can't let go TV upstairs Leave it on all night Do what I have to do Add, subtract, and divide by two But my eyes light up At cops and robbers time I hope the bad guys win I hope the good guys get their skulls bashed in And I try, try, try, but I know (Try, try, try) I can't let go (Try, try, try, but I know) I can't let go
Bring Our Curses Home Lyrics: Stray shards of vinyl siding Hit the windshield coming down On the gridlocked freeway Headed for Houston out of town We were sad to see it sinking Up on the Jumbotron Balconies in higher places Gone, gone, gone Young Romans at the city walls Scavenging for scraps Riding out the amnesia Filling in the gaps Grab hold of my hammer, Try to bring down the superdome On that rainy day When I bring my curses home Water floods the pharmacy People sliding down the isle Emerging into the moonlit night All smiles All smiles Wished I was down there with them Reaching for that third rail Saw them on the TV though As they herded them down to jail That night someone brought some shoes in From Los Angeles or Portland I forget Mad scramble for the boxes Everything got wet Wingless, broken insects Trapped in honeycomb On that wasteful day When I bring my curses home
Supergenesis Lyrics: In the twinkling of an eye My sentence gets passed And I drop to the ground and I go slithering through the grass Carving out battle lines as I crawl Find a hollow branch to rest in, slip inside Wait for mice to poke their heads in, jaw hinged open wide Hang by my tail Listening for the call Cause someday, someday The call will sound And we all, we all are gonna get up from the ground Feel the wet leaves pressed against me, cling like drowning men Try to hoist myself upright, again, try again Hold on to the memories all night And where my legs and arms once sprouted, skin is smooth and slick Rub the smooth spots on some rough rocks, I feel cold and sick Hold on to the battle plan, hold tight Cause someday, someday, the call will sound And we all, we all are gonna get up from the ground
Roger Patterson Van Lyrics: Kelly said the van was streaked with broken signs of you Tapes and magazines, all your goodness beaming through Sorting through your suitcase, by the highway in the sun Somewhere in Louisiana when you really need to run Your legs will bend and buckle, there is nowhere to go So you walk sideways Two sad young men one February, digging through a wreck Cleaning out the tour van, Check and double check Nothing left inside now Nothing left to do Empty out the empties, half this stuff belongs to you When you load out something heavy, you've gotta watch your back So you walk sideways Sideways Sideways
Thank You Mario But Our Princess Is in Another Castle Lyrics: I waited here all by myself The room was dark and it smelled like sulfur I heard the screams From way down in the darkness Felt pretty sure my life was over I kept my hat on just for luck Sang simple tunes the whole night through I wondered if I'd wake to find myself in flames As I waited here for you Yeah when you came in, I could breathe again I saw some guys dressed up like sorcerers Blue robes that flowed above the ground They came and went and I was frightened for my life I tried not to make a sound Just when my solitude was closing in I heard a howl like screeching tires And I told you the one thing I know how to say Through the bright ringing drone of 8-bit choirs Yeah when you came in, I could breathe again
i don't know for certain but i think jd wrote all the lyrics, roger patterson van and mosquito repellent are both 100% kaki's intrumentals with jd's words over the top (bring our curses home might also be this? not sure) and then jd wrote the others but kaki like fancied them up for the album? that's my best guess. basically if a guitar part is way better than jd's usual it's kaki
there are ads in this?? if there are i def dont make anything lol, i had no idea. just checked and there are no copyright claims on this video either, so i'm surprised there are ads. i have literally never made a penny from this account and have no desire to, please block the ads with ublock origin or something
Oh lol, yeah you can disable ads when you upload the video, idr where the button is. RUclips must have autofilled midroll ads. They’re really annoying on phone where you cant use an ad blocker
Anyone else periodically forget about this album because it isn’t on spotify and then suddenly remember it and feel this overwhelming urge to listen to it and cry
Doing just that right now
Why isn't it on spotify though :(
Preach!
Nope, it lives rent free in my heart and mind
Yeah, kinda...

it's confrontational to boot!

god tier mountain goats work.
This is pure beauty.
Thanks for uploading this!
Wow thank you! Roger Patterson Van is one of my new favorites!
Bring Our Curses Home feels like a companion to Song for Dennis Brown
i hope someday after i die, you listen to this
That's beautiful
Only if you die before me, friend ;)
this and moon colony bloodbath are the defining points of a persons TMG obsession

Black Pear Tree Lyrics:
I dug a hole and filled it up with compost
Rested on the cool grass for a minute
I saw the future in a dream last night
There's nothing in it
I set the sapling in the hole
Started gently tamping down the dirt
I saw the future in a dream last night
Somebody's gonna get hurt
Somebody's gonna get hurt
I hope it's not me
But I suspect it's going to have to be
I dug my heels in for the winter
And I waited for the snow
But something was stuck up in the clouds
Something was stuck up there
It couldn't let go
And when its time came, I could see it happen
Blossoms black and sweet as Texas crude
I saw the future flowering like a ruptured vessel
Somebody's gonna get screwed
It won't be me
Someday I am going to walk out of here free
Mosquito Repellent Lyrics:
All day, all day
Sweeping out the shards
Do what I have to do
Try to start anew
But I, thought of you twice
Couldn't help myself
I don't know what I need
Clutching and fingering the rosary beads
But I try, try, try
But I know
I can't let go
Try, try, try, but I know
I can't let go
TV upstairs
Leave it on all night
Do what I have to do
Add, subtract, and divide by two
But my eyes light up
At cops and robbers time
I hope the bad guys win
I hope the good guys get their skulls bashed in
And I try, try, try, but I know
(Try, try, try)
I can't let go
(Try, try, try, but I know)
I can't let go
Bring Our Curses Home Lyrics:
Stray shards of vinyl siding
Hit the windshield coming down
On the gridlocked freeway
Headed for Houston out of town
We were sad to see it sinking
Up on the Jumbotron
Balconies in higher places
Gone, gone, gone
Young Romans at the city walls
Scavenging for scraps
Riding out the amnesia
Filling in the gaps
Grab hold of my hammer,
Try to bring down the superdome
On that rainy day
When I bring my curses home
Water floods the pharmacy
People sliding down the isle
Emerging into the moonlit night
All smiles
All smiles
Wished I was down there with them
Reaching for that third rail
Saw them on the TV though
As they herded them down to jail
That night someone brought some shoes in
From Los Angeles or Portland I forget
Mad scramble for the boxes
Everything got wet
Wingless, broken insects
Trapped in honeycomb
On that wasteful day
When I bring my curses home
Supergenesis Lyrics:
In the twinkling of an eye
My sentence gets passed
And I drop to the ground and I go slithering through the grass
Carving out battle lines as I crawl
Find a hollow branch to rest in, slip inside
Wait for mice to poke their heads in, jaw hinged open wide
Hang by my tail
Listening for the call
Cause someday, someday
The call will sound
And we all, we all are gonna get up from the ground
Feel the wet leaves pressed against me, cling like drowning men
Try to hoist myself upright, again, try again
Hold on to the memories all night
And where my legs and arms once sprouted, skin is smooth and slick
Rub the smooth spots on some rough rocks, I feel cold and sick
Hold on to the battle plan, hold tight
Cause someday, someday, the call will sound
And we all, we all are gonna get up from the ground
Roger Patterson Van Lyrics:
Kelly said the van was streaked with broken signs of you
Tapes and magazines, all your goodness beaming through
Sorting through your suitcase, by the highway in the sun
Somewhere in Louisiana when you really need to run
Your legs will bend and buckle, there is nowhere to go
So you walk sideways
Two sad young men one February, digging through a wreck
Cleaning out the tour van,
Check and double check
Nothing left inside now
Nothing left to do
Empty out the empties, half this stuff belongs to you
When you load out something heavy, you've gotta watch your back
So you walk sideways
Sideways
Sideways
Thank You Mario But Our Princess Is in Another Castle Lyrics:
I waited here all by myself
The room was dark and it smelled like sulfur
I heard the screams
From way down in the darkness
Felt pretty sure my life was over
I kept my hat on just for luck
Sang simple tunes the whole night through
I wondered if I'd wake to find myself in flames
As I waited here for you
Yeah when you came in,
I could breathe again
I saw some guys dressed up like sorcerers
Blue robes that flowed above the ground
They came and went and I was frightened for my life
I tried not to make a sound
Just when my solitude was closing in
I heard a howl like screeching tires
And I told you the one thing I know how to say
Through the bright ringing drone of 8-bit choirs
Yeah when you came in,
I could breathe again
Who’s playing the guitar in Roger Patterson Van?
that'd be kaki
Wow, an impressive part
yeah she's an incredible guitarist
My fantasy is a collab between John Darnielle and Ren Gill... But it's so unlikely
Was the songwriting collaborative here?
i don't know for certain but i think jd wrote all the lyrics, roger patterson van and mosquito repellent are both 100% kaki's intrumentals with jd's words over the top (bring our curses home might also be this? not sure) and then jd wrote the others but kaki like fancied them up for the album? that's my best guess. basically if a guitar part is way better than jd's usual it's kaki
Hope it's nots me ❤❤
This dude really pirated this, then put midroll ads in THE MIDDLE OF THE SONGS, and not even between verses. Bro u r evil
there are ads in this?? if there are i def dont make anything lol, i had no idea. just checked and there are no copyright claims on this video either, so i'm surprised there are ads. i have literally never made a penny from this account and have no desire to, please block the ads with ublock origin or something
How do you block the ads exactly? I’d like to do that!
Oh lol, yeah you can disable ads when you upload the video, idr where the button is. RUclips must have autofilled midroll ads. They’re really annoying on phone where you cant use an ad blocker
@@therexafyte8616 Thanks! I can't find a button to block ads, however. Maybe @notasfarwest can fix it?
No more pirated than listening to this literally anywhere else
