I waited here all by myself The room was dark and it smelled like sulfur I heard the screams from way down in the darkness Felt pretty sure my life was over I kept my hat on just for luck Sang simple tunes the whole night through I wondered if I'd wake to find myself in flames As I waited here for you Yeah when you came in I could breathe again I saw some guys dressed up like sorcerers Blue robes that flowed above the ground They came and went and I was frightened for my life I tried not to make a sound Just when my solitude was closing in I heard a howl like screeching tires And I told you the one thing I know how to say Through the bright ringing drone of 8-bit choirs Yeah when you came in I could breathe again
Every Mountain Goats performance should consist of 1 part music and 2 parts Darnielle banter/storytelling. That's the proper dosage for maximum emotional and entertainment effect.
I swear, half of the views on this video are from me. I even bumped into him after the show with my girlfriend at the time, and he gave us a chocolate bar he didn't want. Incredibly nice guy. We took the chocolate down to a nearby bar and shared it and a pitcher of beer. It tasted like emo tears and victory. In fact, you can hear my laughs on this video. They're the especially loud ones.
I have to thank the guys at Night Vale Presents for the “I only listen to the Mountain Goats” podcast for introducing me to this amazing singer/songwriter.
They introduced me to AJJ, which I found an old cover of the frontman playing This Year, I have quite literally only listened to the mountain goats for like a month
His story of the song prior to playing really helps explain what the song is about, i first just thought it was about Toad waiting for Mario which it is, but its deeper. Mario was expecting Peach to be there but she wasn't, it's just Toad, Mario is surely disappointed it's not peach, but Toad is relieved someone saved him. So deep.
This song gets me every time. I know it's about a cartoon plumber but the "yeah when you came in, I could breathe again" hits like a semi truck, every time. 😥
Never before have I found a performance that makes me laugh and subsequently give me chills, and then make something so mundane and silly into something so profound. P.S. I was actually present for this performance (you can hear me; I'm the especially loud laugher), and bumped into John Dardielle afterwords as my date and I were headed to the water fountain, and he was trying to sneak out the back (he's very much an introvert, and doesn't do well with interacting with large groups of fans). He gave me and my date a very large Hershey's bar that his manager had given him and he didn't want, though I suspect he was just using it as a means to get rid of us. We took that Hershey's bar to the nearest watering hole and shared it, along with a pitcher of cheep beer, and it all tasted like teenage emo tears and victory.
It's kind of funny that you keep forgetting you've already commented on this and tell the story again. It's very much how I consume live Mountain Goats content. I'll watch it, remember it exists and enjoy it again all anew later.
I've known about The Mountain Goats for 5 years I've been in a happy commuted relationship for 9 and let me tell you does it fucking hit different when after 9 years he just up and leaves you for another girl.
With all the love in the world and billions of hours listening to the best band in the world, the intro sounds like trump explaining the plot of the games. (except john has genuine humour and warmth)

I agree
Ben Caro I have seen them live and can attest to the fact that the preferred proportions you listed are nearly met.
We dearly need this touching song to be performed with the screeching vocal tones of Toad's real voice.
I know we have to call.....Egoraptor
I need this
The bright ringing drone of eight-bit choirs

You can hear mine pretty clearly too. I've met John four or five times now and he's remembered my name every time, it's fucking wild.
What a great crowd, gave him good reactions but maintained a fantastic silence.
How does a line as great as "when you came in I could breath again" exist in a song about Mario rescuing Toad
Rylie because John Darnielle i guess
Go sit on a few dudes with hammers and you'll find out
I always laugh at the way he sets this up, then get genuine chills from the song itself. John Darnielle is brilliant.
I don't know but this guy is the most pretentious guy I have ever seen in my life.
@@inspectorjavert5563 I don't think you understand that word.
I find it astonishing how john darnielle can make such and amazing, dramatic song out of fucking Mario. I love this man so much.
The greatest songwriter I have found in my 54 years
I have to thank the guys at Night Vale Presents for the “I only listen to the Mountain Goats” podcast for introducing me to this amazing singer/songwriter.
I couldn’t agree more, that podcast literally changed my life
They introduced me to AJJ, which I found an old cover of the frontman playing This Year, I have quite literally only listened to the mountain goats for like a month
@@johnbacile9495 the title of "I only listen to the mountain goats" is a self fulfilling prophecy, happened to me too
I actually knew mountain goats first and found nightmare through that podcast when searching for interviews with Jon

john’s storytelling prior to the song is ESSENTIAL in my opinion
Proof, if anyone needed it, that JD can write a song about absolutely anything and make it beautiful, emotional and epic.
This song fills me with hope. Maybe if we all can't find our peaches, we can still rescue and be rescued.
That’s really beautiful
This is really beautiful
I can't believe a song about Toad from Mario made me cry. But it did.

Would you say it hits like... an 18 wheeler heading down the interstate?
@@joshkeck6348 and the breaks are gonna give... and you won't know til it's too late
Semi-quaver run at 7:15 sounds like a little nod to the 8-bit power-up sound.
the introduction alone was a masterpiece
I've watched this so many times but it never fails to make me laugh/cry.
the piano melody at some points sounds like Deuteronomy 2:10 and that really adds to this song
it will never not upset me that this isnt on spsotify for me to have in my rainy days playlisst.
true, though they did recently put the yo-yo EP's on spotify so there's hope for the BPT eventually!
it's amazing to watch him play

@@michaelreppenhagen736 Oh man I totally forgot I already shared this story. Oh well. xD
This is delightful.
I was there for this live. I still laugh my ass off at the story, and I still get chills at the song itself. What a work of art in all aspects.
This was my first Mountain Goats show ever and I'm so glad this is how I first experienced it
"When you came in I could breath again"
ohmy heart!
I will always need a little more and this video should always fill that gap.
I love TMG. Keep it up
I swear I think I had a dream like this once
If anyone wants to introduce the mountain goats to someone this is the first video you need to show them
This amazing I want the whole album!
It was on an EP he did with Kaki King called "Black Pear Tree"!
Josh Keck oh I know that it's just that I can't find it on iTunes or anywhere, I may just have e to download it from youtube
That's probably your best bet, it was a vinyl only release I believe
Josh Keck yeah too bad. I'll do it though
Try Discogs, but it's bloody expensive as heck.

Yes. That friend summarizes my life. Heheh.
super fucking mario!
Someone needs to type this into a monologue we can read aloud and repeat.
Oh hell, I'll do it.
Did you finish?
SpiderDarling can you please send it to me if you actually did it?
Well now I gotta now, how's that going for you?
Pretty big F that this monologue isn't longer or I might even consider taking this to a speech competition
would this be considered a ballad?
yes
I had to watch because I was sure this was Kresge from the thumbnail. I had to make sure.
Sure is! It was my first Goats show and to this day one of my favorites
I don't know who does the booking there now but they should get JD to come back lol
Shades of Mitch Hedberg

If you play this at 0.75 speed it sounds like the original.
And if you fit it at .25 speed it sounds like someone punching a guitar
This should be the credits to the new Mario movie 🙏
Makes you wonder what it is like as a Toad in a castle that was warped over...
Did he nibble part of the song scribe?!
Haha no, it's torn off of a Hy-Vee bag
Which album is this song on? I don't know this one. He has so many great songs.
It was on an EP called "Black Pear Tree" he did with Kaki King. It was vinyl only but you can find it on youtube
this is a a proper song about MUMS!

Bo Burnham really aged terribly
lmao. they really need to collab tho huh
hi this is the funniest fucking thing i’ve ever seen
I actually chuckle-snorted when I read your comment. Thanks... I needed a good laugh. 💜
