@@geirbend I like this bro
@@geirbend John would tell you himself that he's not much of a lead guitarist. That's probably why he gets up like 30 seconds into the jam and goes to the piano instead.
My first encounter with T.M.G. No musical virtuosity ,no finely honed vocal mastery, no attention demanding stage presence, not even stunning superstar looks.......I guess we'll have to settle for the absolute overall perfection that the is found in the sum of all these parts! I count today as Blessed ,in large part for the good fortune of having stumbled across this expression of pretension free brilliance!
Opening a pandemic performance with The Plague is just the most beautiful touch
10:00 "See? conspiracy. And really it's the Gates foundation that's at the bottom of this one."
omfg I'm dying 🤣🤣
I've listened to this a few times now. The sincerity with which John assures me that he misses me gets me every time, because I also feel it on a personal level. I miss you all so much too!
My dream job is to be the guy who picks the fonts for the next Mountain Goats project.
I suspect on this last one, Getting Into Knives, it was a graphic designer making the type choice: www.marksimonson.com/fonts/view/bookmania is not something you would find/choose without a design background. On the two before that, though, In League With Dragons & Goths, I strongly suspect John had some input - they're not choices a designer would probably make. That's not to say I dislike those choices, I very much love them: they have the feel of something from 1001fonts.com in 1999, a shut-in with their Gateway downloading this barely readable script and just using it everywhere, getting class papers returned with "Arial 12 pts., please!!!" circled in red.
@@joshoakley4856 Wow thanks for that incredibly thought out response!! I am a graphic designer btw. Yes I would not be surprised if John had a lot of creative input in the cover art and I imagine those would be really fun client meetings.
@@joshoakley4856 You are one of my favorite kinds of nerd, thank you.
@@jefcaine My deceased Father in Law (a fantastic man, miss him all the time...) was a graphic designer as well. He was clearly dyslexic but never diagnosed, so my MIL did all his homework in highschool so he wouldn't flunk out (gotta love Hawai'i public school in the '60s!). Some time after graduating he created his own graphic design company and found a way to have a creative outlet while making a decent living for his family. Hell of a guy.
*ANYWAY*
Because my partner (his son) helped him out a lot with the technical side of the work (my partner is a computer nerd), he's very into fonts and logo designs and it eventually became an interest of mine... It's something that comes up in our conversations a lot!
The fonts on Getting into Knives (and used by the band during that time) are _so good_ ! Even though I had a difficult time with the music on that album I ended up buying the double vinyl just to put it up and display it on one of our walls. My partner isn't a fan of TMG but is pretty fond of the album art/font.
It cool to find other people who geek out over font! I haven't met many, and the few who I have met are usually graphic designers, like you.
I'd love it if you if you were able to work with TMG someday: that sounds like a dream job.
I'm not creatively inclined so I'll settle for just being a fan. I'm flying from Hawaii with my partner in... damn, about a week(!) to Portland to see TMG. I got tickets for all 3 shoes (I'm flying out, so might as well 🤷🏻♀️). I don't know where you're at, but even though we'll probably never meet in person, I wish you luck with your career, and I'll raise a glass to good fonts...
@@MsFuzzipoo Damn. This is one hell of a reply for a one year old comment. Thanks for sharing all of that. I haven't gotten to work with TMG yet but I'll continue to make graphics while listening to their music! Have fun at the show.
I play this song daily for my late friend, Jake. He was 36. I miss him so much and so many MG lines hit so hard. He went past the last exit, he was all about downshifting and second gears ... I am going to try to go on and live to honor him but I am just so fucking sad ...
which song?
How "This Year" hasn't become the anthem for 2020 I will never understand.
Exegetic Chains has a more 2020 vibe honestly
No children
Feels like it's been my personal anthem for a number of years.
Dude, Jon Wurster is spectacular!
love to watch the man work
That performance of Heel Turn 2 has me speechless, just insane talent all across the board. You are a special group, thank you for sharing this with the world, and for a great cause!
As a 1980s wrestling fan and a Goats fanatic, I think that song is one of the best performances of a song that have done. Every member was bringing the wood.
heel turn 2....I mean it was already my favorite song ever written so I didn't think there was any way to make it better but holy shit that was incredible
That's four guys bringing it.
I've been listening to both volumes twice on average per workday for like a month. I'm not saying I've got a problem, but I've got a problem.
Anyway, awesome to put a face to the name, so to speak.
That soft, slow jazz intro to No Children hurts my heart in the best way
Crazy this was from August. I thought it was just a few months ago.
I could have sworn it was last Tuesday
August was when it was recorded, it was broadcast around the end of October on noonchorus!
@@CapucineSky I can’t believe it was October, it still seemed like March 2020
The Diaz Brothers was just amazing. Heel Turn 2, Southwestern Territories...so many gems. And brilliantly performed!!
Going through this for the first time. That version of Younger was unbelievable.
It's interesting to hear John sing about feeling whole again in Snohomish, the town that fractured me. If you're in the area, stop by the Thumbnail Theater.
I love The Mountain Goats with all my heart.
Team Ether represent
Loving the 'I do not have time for this shit' vibe Jon W gives off during most of JD's ramblings
We finally got him some popcorn
This is the singular best piece of art which I've seen come about as a direct result of the pandemic.
For a second I thought John had just flat out left to take a little walk when the instrumental break on HT2 hit, and I just about laughed my balls off.
Thank you for helping me through. There was a hell inside the hell and another hell inside that one and another two hells to either side.
Oh this version of Heretic Pride GOT ME GOOD. Simply stunning, esp with the turn to estate sale sign.
Thank you guys
I legit felt in my heart as you guys played
This is the content we had a plague for.
I wish I could like this video more than once
I already have this purchased on bandcamp; I really need to give it a full listen. I recently found a live version of Heel turn 2 on youtube, this version is amazing too, better sound quality so I can use my nice headphones at home. The Mountain Goats mean so much to me.
You're F-ing hilarious John. Fan since early 2000s.
In 1967 I got over my revenge and finally left 8 of my dad's hand built cars intact and just needing a battery on the 48th floor of a hotel and casino in Las Vegas. I only smashed one of the nine and got over my revenge. They were fully functional and just needed a new battery when I left a monument to my dad's awesome cars on the 48th floor of a hotel and casino.
We miss you too. You don't even know.
your band has made me closer to my distant friends.
They saved it!
I remember John Hodgman singing "No Children" at the Bell House in Brooklyn... I sang along because I knew all the words ^_^
Even being familiar with only a handful of these songs, this was a hell of a show. Is this what they're like live?
They are even better feeding off an audience.
Sadly I passed up going to a TMG show a few years back because I just don't like the crowds, the drive, the whole live experience(besides the music); I'm a bit of an introvert. I really wish I had gone to that show now. Radical Face was great live, also saw Judas Priest a long time ago in San Diego with a friend that got the tickets; guess those two were enough to put me off the live experience. I think I'll see TMG next time they're around me though. I listen to/watch so much of their live music all the time.
@@jwest88 Go with a friend. I've seen Rush twice with my best pal, and one of my favorite memories of all time is of going to Lallapaloosa with two friends in high school.
@@MichaelChanning The two I went to were with friends. Maybe that's why I actually ended up going. Alone I backed out, will have to find a friend that wants to go next time.
I'm obsessed with these guys.
Ah, excellent!
Go with the obsession!
You’re in good company. No such thing as a lukewarm tMG fan
🤘🤘🤘
@@aslawrence Same here. 20 years of this band has been great.
10:34 Is it just me at 3AM, or is John singing Skating Polly?….
I love the snare sound throughout this video
Mountain GOAT
Please tell me you were the guy yelling “Mountain GOAT” at the Indy show last month. We all got into it - JD even did it once 😂🤘
Thank you for sharing this! Feels like I'm there watching you play this as a concert live.
I love it♥️ very good songs 👋👌👍
From France 🇫🇷 ❤️ ✌🏼
What a truly incredible way to spend a Saturday. Thank you for this.
Beautiful voice and songs! X
I love these guys just as much as I love Moral Orel ... kiss ... Let us know when you're coming to New York
Loved this so much
The Plague was already (arguably) John's greatest moment, even before 2020 hit.
man i love these videos so much
Thank you!
Amazing Guitarist
Thank you
Ads that interrupt the middle of songs are probably as bad as papercuts
Seems like John Darnell has come a long way to find his true calling: a roadie with a lot of stories to tell.
Wow, you have such a way with words, and today I just came across you guys, your music has a cool , groovey vibe, are you coming to Ohio?
I don't know who these Mountain Boat guys are but they seem pretty alright
See ya tomorrow
Was kind of hoping he'd sing the rest of This Flight Tonight @ 53:35
i can't decide which song's arrangement and recording i like best here. but probably "Younger," right?
john is so cringey i love it lol
Anybody know if this stream will be saved or not?
This is a rebroadcast of recording the album.
@@mamieriyeff6227 yeah but is the broadcastgoinf to stay up is my question. Wanna watch it again in the future if possible 😀
@@gabrielbel3440 I don't think so because they are replaying it tomorrow night. Support the band and buy the album?
@@mamieriyeff6227 okay, i I've been listening to it on Spotify and the vinyl is something i want! 😀
Just love being able to see the band jamming together! No crime in that but I so hope it stays up a while
@@mamieriyeff6227 It’s actually volume 2 tomorrow! A different set of songs. ☺️
youtube sent me here from broken air con, glove box, door, and bin playing take five. this is not as good but still pretty good I must admit.
This has two dislikes...why
You cannot reasonably talk someone out of something that they haven't reasonably talked themselves into
Bye dudes
he looks a bit like Les Claypool - just sayin'
His voice too 😲
Record it again minus the hand clapping.
