It's like your cab driver turns out to be a huge film buff.
what cabs are you riding in? are you from the 50s?
you clearly haven't been in a NYC cab for 25-30 years... cant even remever the last time I had a native American, let alone native NYer as a cab driver
You guys are right. I haven't been driven around NYC since the early 80s. The driver looked and sounded just like Bruno Kirby and he kept talking about Frank Sinatra. We were on tour at the time and things were looking a bit bleak and we were feeling a bit crabby from the flight, so we wound the window up to get a bit of peace. Have things changed so much since then?
First cab I took in NY outta the airport in 2010 when I was 15, the cabdriver asked me if I saw Scarface
Better that than a Saturday Night Live cast member who replaced a beloved Weekend Update anchor. Oh, wait...
This guy is more New York than New York.
This is not even ironic in 2021
Specifically Brooklyn
No
You say that like it's a good thing. It isn't.
As a life long New Yorker, that works construction in the city, who had a father that was an EXTREME New Yorker... I know a lot more guys that are way more "New York"... Colins the typical New Yorker, but a gem of a guy none the less.
Colin is beloved for so many reasons, just listen to him speak. The sincerity hurts my heart, even as it makes me smile. Thanks for this one.

I’ve seen this many of them
0
I don't think Color of Paradise is in the collection, is it?
@@Nonesovile96 Fool.
Thanks for making the list, I was about to go back and do the same thing
Damn great list. Only seen a few of these, have to check em out. Thanks Colin
I'll watch anything with Colin in it. His rambles are more entertaining than anything "big" comedians are doing now. Thank you criterion.
“I’d like to make my own version of Roma… New Yorka”
Colin Quinn: "27 Dresses isn't up to Criterion standards"
Criterion: "well...we do have Armageddon"
@REGGIE JOHNSON It's okay to be wrong.
@REGGIE JOHNSON Don't be white.
I still have my heart set on getting The Rock, in the Criterion Collection. The best damn San Francisco car chase scene since Bullitt.
@REGGIE JOHNSON Only on DVD. I think.
@@ambskater97 "Don't be white." What the fuck?
One of the most underrated Weekend Update hosts in SNL’s rich history. What a treat getting to see him do the closet picks 👌
I grew up with Colin Quinn's Weekend Update. Not as funny as Norm Macdonald's, but that's because Macdonald set the bar really high.
"You want to kill him but you love him." Great description of David Thewlis' character in Naked. A very impressive movie. Tough one though.
Never thought I'd see ol Col in the Criterion closet. Thanks so much for making this happen! Seems Collin is getting sweeter with age. Although I'll admit I do miss mid-40s curmudgeon Colin, who would arrive early in the morning on OandA in his pajamas to air out his grievances in the midst of some long-term depression. A gem of a person.
Nothing beats Col calling Anthony “a back alley Tunisian knife fighter” for taking a pretty mild swipe at him.
@@toddkonrad2407 That's amazing. I knew Colin could serve up some good ones, but that's a silver platter insult. Also would like to see more comedians in the Criterion closet.
@@danielm4114 Joe DeRosa would be fun to see there because he’s a real film aficionado and would easily fit in the closet due to his distinct lack of shoulders
Depressed irate Colin on O&A was the funniest person ever. Especially if Bob Kelly, Norton and or Rich Vos, was in the studio as well.
Who would've known Colin was so knowledgable, and had such a big passion for film.
I’m ready for his movie about his NYC!! Also, probably gonna need to add 27 Dress to the Channel when he does his Adventures in Moviegoing!!
Even when talking about 1950s Italian cinema he's self deprecating
Why
None of these movies are 50s
Holy crap! He's not only an awesome comic. He's also a true cinephile!
I wish there was more Colin Quinn material, he is the best
Love this man
huge kudos for shouting out 'Big Deal on Madonna Street' or 'The Usual Unknowns', a classic Italian comedy starring the legendary Totò
Something Wild! One of the absolute best, very underrated.
As is the other Something Wild, also in the collection!
Yes yes yes! One of my favourite films. There's nothing quite like it. It shocks me how people on letterboxd don't seem to get that one :/
Have the 1961 original SOMETHING WILD as a Special Edition MGM DVD. Ralph Meeker, Carroll Baker, Hell we even get a cameo from Edith herself, Jean Stapleton! WEST SIDE STORY got most of the attention in '61, yet this raw, unflinching look at a rape victim in a uncaring NYC is just too ahead of its time.
My thought upon clicking on this was, “Who the hell let him in there?” But it turns out to be one of the best videos in this series. Really funny and humble. God bless him: he even hesitates to take too many. Who knew Colin was such a mensch?
Love ya Colin, You've been one of my guys since the MTV days. Bless.
Maybe this is just my own ignorance, but I never pegged Colin Quinn as an intellectual cineaste. I need to reevaluate my preconceived notions.
Preconceptions are always warped and wrong and rob us of fresh vibrations.
I pegged him lots of times
@@boredcrab2 that's vulgar
Yea you’re probably some soy boy lol
@@mustax1 Cut that part out!!
Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty this is the first closet picks where the guest puts more movies back on the shelf than in his bag.
Mike Leigh didn't take any
0:48 - *MONA LISA* _dir. Neil Jordan_ (1986)
1:23 - *MY LIFE AS A DOG* _dir. Lasse Hallström_ (1985)
1:46 - *LE PETIT SOLDAT* _dir. Jean-Luc Godard_ (1963)
2:51 - *ROMA* _dir. Federico Fellini_ (1972)
3:22 - *SOMETHING WILD* _dir. Jack Garfein_ (1961)
4:06 - *NAKED* _dir. Mike Leigh_ (1993)
3:55 - *SMITHEREENS* _dir. Susan Seidelman_ (1982)
4:25 - *CLAUDINE* _dir. John Berry_ (1974)
Can you guys stop spoiling the picks? Really annoying.
I've never clicked a video so fast in my life
Are you 12 ?
@@martybass7376 Do you know a lot of 12-year-old Colin Quinn fans?
@@Ben-O25 no but your comment reeked of a 12 year olds mentaility.. so had to ask
@@Ben-O25 lmao
@@Nonesovile96 would everyone just shut up and be cool?
Colin is always wonderful. Long live mush mouth.
"I'd like to make my version of Roma. New Yorka."
Gold.
I'm so glad I lived long enough to see the cellar crowd comedians rambling in their rooms on RUclips.
Resurrect Norm Macdonald from the dead and get him in here
He's a deeply closeted gay man
norm in the criterion closet would be among the greatest things to ever exist.
Norm did have interesting taste. I heard him talk about his love of Russian novels in an interview
He’ll be hoping brokeback mountain is in there
...Colin is the Man!!
My personal favorite movie is
"The Roaring Twenties"
A True Story, Starring,
James Cagney, Humphrey Bogart, Gladys George, If you haven't seen it, Treat yourself and Check it out👍👍
More comedians please. Jim Norton is a HUGE movie buff
Colin Quinn in the criterion closest?! One of my all time favorite person’s and comedian
I mean this as a compliment: Colin Quinn has the energy of a guy who drank two large coffees before going on a long subway ride.
...not a good plan
Awesome picks! We need more Roma love, one of Fellini’s best for sure!
Roma > Amarcord
' Something Wild. ' Someone who really knows about cinema. It was cinema on the margins then, and long live the margins where you create freely and truly.
Goddamn, is he such a great story teller! Just seems like a very cool, intelligent man all-around.
Jim Norton will say he’s never seen any of these.
We are delighted to find Colin Quinn in the closet! You never know what people will pick and he surprised me. I loved the story of the video store lady- I know when we had those places there would be one or two film buffs that could give amazing recommendations. I feel sure he will get to chat with her again in heaven one day🌈☀
I love Colin Quinn, this is awesome.
Greatest crossover I never could’ve imagined. I watch Quinn comedy videos every other day and always watching some cinema related content lol I love this too much
Criterion, thank you so much for all of these closet video's! Seems like I've said this before on any number of this series BUT..I could listen to him, or her as the case may be, talk All Day! Loved it! Thanks Colin!
Holy hell the king! More respect then I already had
I like that he made his visit to the criterion closet films about New York. His visit had a theme. And like him, I like films about old New York. Colin Quinn is a nice guy.
Can we get a hour of this guy talking about movies? I need more.
Rififi has one of the greatest, maybe even the greatest, heists ever filmed. I went to Greece about 5 years ago and made a point of visiting the Athens First Cemetery and visiting Dassin's grave -- he's buried in Melina Mecouri's plot. It was not an easy walk! Lots of hills and winding streets and if you've ever seen the street signs of Athens they're often so faded or weatherbeaten that you can barely read them! I also saw something that makes me laugh to this day: a priest walking around the tombs, blessing a few and suddenly he stops and pulls out his phone and starts tapping away!
Wow, that's amazing. I love Colin Quinn but now I appreciate him even more! So many films I need to watch
Love this! Just saw his live show kicking off the New York Comedy Festival last night at Lucille Lortel and it was fantastic. He's one of the great monologists of our time (no "joke"). Fearless and true.
Never say "monologuist" again
@@lukess.s sure thing too kool for skool
Him using the camera just to vlog and take the entire production over is so funny no matter how serious he gets
Was thinking this with all the cuts there was lmao, you just know there's a ton more footage
Colin hasn't really aged much since the O&A days.
He is only 62, but he's looked 62 for 20 years
It feels like my two worlds are colliding. Love Col.
If he like Fellini, he should have gotten the box set
I have always loved Colin Quinn and I love that he mentioned The Color of Paradise. Pretty obscure movie but one of my favorites.
Finally, a new episode of Cop Show.
He’s doing a great impression of Jay Mohr doing a Colin Quinn impression
2:13, A shout-out to all those of us rental clerks that changed lives with film suggestions. I needed to hear that, thanks Colin.
Actor Bob Hoskins was the detective in, "Who Framed Roger Rabbit".
What a nice surprise. I enjoy seeing familiar faces who I would not expect to be fans of the criterion collection.
So now on the channel they need to do a 27 dresses taxi driver double feature and call it the real New York
I just browsed through Colin's IMDB page for a film that belongs in the collection and by god I found one. Windy City Heat.
Nice. Wouldn't have thought Colin to be a Criterion nerd like the rest of us. Very cool:D
Jerry Seinfeld’s own personal mechanic himself
That was great, I'm mad for Quinn!
2:09 great tribute Colin to a person who went largely unlnown but made an impression on you. That’s all we can hope for
Colin Quinn is the BEST. So glad to get his thoughts on cinema.
Colin Quinn! Dude. Imagine meeting him in Brooklyn having a slice of pie, then sitting and talking about films. C'mon. Somebody make a freaking talk show with him already! lol
Big Deal on Madonna Street is one of my favourites too.
Col - all the other comics look up to him like he’s Marlon Brando and we’re all Connie Chung in 89’
Col: impresses the Cinemaliterati by going straight to Bob Hoskins ie the Danny Devito
of the United Kingdom
Maybe it was that box of angel wings Italian cookies he sneezed into before getting there
He really has become the mount Saint Helens of independent film
Col: brings up “my life as a dog” because he confused an Arthouse cinema with the ones showing Swedish films on 42nd St. after it was gentrified
(at least Billy’s Topless was still on that side of Manhattan)
Col the sophisto
He pronounces
Le Petit Soldat by Jean Luc Godard so perfectly
Unfortunately he still comes across like
Debi Mazar checking out Janice Rossi’s characters perfume collection in Goodfellas
Then I heard him say something about being
Sick n Old so I had to tune out
but before I do I see him leaning with his hands on both sides of the booth like he was holding himself up crinkling all the plastic jewel cases
Au revoir old chum 🩸🦈
This was a great one. Never would have guessed he was a film buff!
Colin Quinn is a quality pick. No surprise, Criterion knows how to sift out the quality picks
More comics please!
Shane Gillis is a fellow cineaste, he'd be great.
Dougie Bell has met most of these directors, get him!
He put so many back in the shelf! Did he only take home like 2 movies?
This guy is my idol and a true American treasure.
Rome is very underrated film, one of my favorite Fellini's.
What about Crocodile Dundee 2?
I want the half hour version.
Finally, some love for Something Wild!
Try to find Claudine, I think you'll be able to ;) You HAVE to watch it, lovely flick.
There was a tiny video store in Amsterdam underground this closet place reminds me of
1:03 "Everyone's seen (Riffiffi)"
I haven't seen Riffiffi...I always pass it when I go to Barnes and Noble...
“Everybody’s seen Rififi”
Me: 👀
Rififi
I picked up the the Blu-ray on one of the sales a couple years ago, and I'm ashamed to say I haven't gotten around to seeing yet it yet....Oops! My backlog has been quite large for a while now
The first 45 seconds already has me cracking up.
The other SOMETHING WILD is a great New York/New Jersey movie
I'd love the get a "New York movie" list from Colin.
_The Colour of Paradise_ is a Persian film I'd seen years ago, and it's fantastic.
The way he talks about the woman at the video store. I'm missing that. I was always so appreciative of the curators of films. Video stores allowed for those unique relationships.
The Video Store Collin mentions here was on 57th Street between 8th and 9th. I know this because I used to see him there.
You know, I think he's from New York.
(Loved the energy hahaha)
If only David Bowie had been given a chance in the closet or Bourdain. Tilda Swinton would be good. Bring back Rod Serling or Orson Welles. Dave Chappelle would be interesting.
Well done 👏 I loved those points about a setting that captures New York then transitions over to "NAKED."
I'd say naked is a film about two rapists. In a nutshell.
@@davidperez5089 you need to watch that movie again dude
@@lukess.s why's that?
love him! hi cat 🐈 story on the howard stern show is insane!
I like the kind of person over film industry people.
Now this is a guest!
Larissa Sheptiko is amazjnf
Camera crew: "Did someone invite this guy?"
instant classic closet vid right here
Love the Wo Hop shirt!
'Naked' is good. British film from the early 90s.
"I don't wanna be the person who doesn't understand the Criterion Collection." Goes on to pick out a dozen movies that have never been pulled from the closet. My Life as a Dog? Something Wild?
WOW, I was just watching the "Maggie" scene from Naked, and not 5 minutes later Colin mentions the movie. F***KING uncanny!
I imagine 27 Dresses is now a Criterion runner up movie
Best one yet.
Rififi is great.
Just recently bought Mona Lisa, have yet to see it.
Great episode!
wowza quinn making the rounds is so rare very excited but worried since norm. quinn/attell are the greatest alive now go see them live!
