@baxatakbaxatak2014 I get the same reaction of joy and yelling, "I didn't know he was in this!" Whenever Tom Waits pops up. He has the same effect on me.
One of my favorite closets. I love when ppl are so granular about why they love these movies instead of simply shaking their head and going so good, so good.
exactly....I've been watching these since the beginning but you soon realize that many of the people actually don't have much to say...:D end up just kinda clicking through it and closing the video halfway done..
Yes I love that too. Don't just say that you love a particular movie, explain why you love it too, even if you think those reasons might sound a bit corny or uninteresting to viewers, we still want to know 😊
100% agree on his Miller's Crossing comments. It's super-complicated and needs to be rewatched to make sense of it (and rewards your investment), and Turturro is unforgettable. As is Jon Polito!
Yes -- the narration/voice over in "Blast of Silence" is one of the best aspects of this great film. What really sets this particular voice over apart, is the fact that it's done in the second person, which makes the raw cynicism really come alive, especially with the accent and tone of the narrator. Brilliant. So fun to mouth along as you watch...
I utterly adore what he said about Llewyn Davis. Beautifully expresses the lingering sadness, melancholy, ache of the film. My personal favorite Coen film.
This guy is such a talented all-rounder it's insane. He talks like a cool college professor. The second he starts talking about Blast of Silence, I'm already looking it up and preparing to watch it right away.
omg YES finally Millers Crossing! my first Coens Bros movie changed my life. I watched it three times and read the screenplay even knowing the outcome the hair on the back of my neck still stood up. 10/10 movie. MAGNIFICENT. FLAWLESS. UNASSAILABLE.
This man speaking makes me wish I didn't work an office job but struggled even more to enjoy the arts in a way that is meaningful and can be articulated in such an effortless but purposeful way.
I’ll now watch all of these films based on Tim’s recommendation. Watched a couple of interviews with him recently and he comes across as an intelligent, knowledgeable and genuinely lovely guy.
Leaves of Grass for the collection!!! 1. Excellent dual performance by Ed Norton 2. Exquisite acting AND directing by Tim Blake Nelson, perfectly supporting both lead roles 3. Pitch perfect music and overall tone, letting the viewer sit and dwell in it's Whitmanness
Topsy Turvy! A man after my own heart, would love to see Tim in a Mike Leigh film. Wonderful choices all. And what a treat he is in for with Tokyo Story. Recently watched his video talking about his film roles and now this....he's a joy to listen to.
I absolutely love TBN. His descriptions are spot in. I own two of his choices, Chinese Bookie and Miller's Crossing. His assessment of Turturro's character in Miller's Crossing is perfect, and I totally agree with him.
*From HEAVYWEIGHTS to O' BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU to JUST MERCY and back to WATCHMEN TV and all of his work: Tim Blake Nelson is a lucky charm to any film or series.*
Finally someone thoughtful, intellectual nd well-articulated in his picks. Thats sadly rare. I love all videos from the closet, bjt this is soo much better then ppl just praising the movies without giving any interesting take. Great to see!
!!!YES!!! Miller’s Crossing!! Still my favorite Coen Bros film. It’s the best script they’ve written and the best dialog they’ve done. And I’m a big Big Lebowski fan! When Tim says you have to watch it 3 times, it’s not enough, watch it TEN times!
This guy is a national treasure! Love how he gives a lot of credit to The Coen Brothers. He's definitely one of the seminal character actors of his time.
Miller's Crossing! Quite possibly my favorite film (or at least in the top 5), and his description of John Tuturro's performance is spot on: It takes a great actor to be truly unappealing.
There are just these awesome moments in some movies that is like a moment in a song that you love every time they come up, and Coen Brothers films are chock full of them, and for me Miller’s Crossing scene with Albert Finney when he fights off a mob hit job is a big one. Also, it always reminded me of a story I’d heard of my paternal grandpa who was physically and temperamentally similar to that character, when he caught a robber in his home - except he leapt off the roof onto the poor beggar.
Damn, I could listen to Tim talk about film and craft all day long. Made me want to drop everything and watch each of these stat, whether I've seen them before or not. 😊🙏
this was great. what a neat and effective (and efficient) way to really get into someone's mind and learn a lot of the little special nuggets of information/insight they uniquely have on life, while simultaneously getting a ton of great movie recommendations. TBN is a super cool dude.
I couldn't agree more on John Turturro's turn in Miller's Crossing. I want to add though that one of the films that spoke to me like very few others was Mr. Turturro's first directing effort, "Mac". I haven't been able to find it anywhere unencumbered by ads, maybe Criterion can do something about that, but it holds a special place for me in any case. I'm glad he's gotten more opportunities to direct lately. He always seems to work two ways: his way, and the right way, and they're both the same.
He is a treasure, love him.... Now, Millers Crossing has several of the best hit scenes in any mob or cop film, starting with the shot of the two Thomson machine guns viewed from floor level right through to the old man popping away at the fleeing car... absolutely top tier. The very funny shot of the street fight between the cops and mob guys, it looks like they are far apart, camera moves to the side and we see they are right on top of each other.... funny and wild. I will be tracking down Blast of Silence! Cheers!
An amazing actor. Loved him as a kid seeing him in Holes, love him still as an adult seeing him in Watchmen. And some amazing picks to boot. Long live Mirror Guy! 🪞
Finally some love for the masterpiece Topsy Turvy. And it makes sense it's from the mighty Tim Blake Nelson. I was an extra in O Brother, Where Art Thou? and Tim (along with everyone else on that film) was friendly, amiable and a class act.
And he nailed why John Turturro's performance in Miller's Crossing is so so special. Philip Seymour Hoffman also gets there in Boogie Nights but with some extra empathy.
They oughta have Old Henry in Criterion form, one day. What a movie, I knew a mensch like Tim Blake Nelson wouldn’t choose any old role at this stage, and he owned that one to the hilt. Hell, his brief scene in The Homesman was crackling, memorable. Back in your corner, Bits! Remember that bit, pun firmly intended? Ha, love this guy.
Definitely going to have to check out Blast of Silence. Love noir cinema and hardboiled fiction and it sounds like a hidden gem, so for sure going to have to give that one a watch.
Watched Tokyo Story for the first time this year (on the Criterion Channel) and LOVE IT. The only thing I don't like about The Ballad of Buster Scruggs is that it needs more Tim Blake Nelson.
He’s right, we need some more Coen films in the collection-like where is O Brother, Where Art Thou? Amazing performances by TBN and Turturro in that one. Also, when are you gonna give Leaves of Grass its own spine number and give it a spot on those shelves? TBN is a wonderful actor, writer, and director and beautiful performances by Keri Russell and Susan Sarandon.
Old Henry was such a great surprise of a hidden gem western! A movie which builds to the absolutely incredible climax reveal of . . . . Tim as the solid character actor and director with impeccable taste we all knew he was & or could be. Fuck yeah, no spoilers here my friends.
I have an idea for a movie for Tim Blake Nelson: Tim's character has relocated from West Texas to a tough poverty-ridden town in Northern England. Tim's character becomes integral to the community. He knows how to repair cars. He knows how to respond to plumbing and electrical issues. He is an emotional rock for angry and troubled personalities. One young person, however, suspects that this Local Hero, this much-admired member of the community, is not all he seems.
Tim Blake Nelson is a tremendous actor and director. I agree with him that Miller’s Crossing is The Cohen Brothers’ best film, Gabriel Byrne and Albert Finney were amazing in it, as well as John Turturro as Tim explains.
One smart cookie, and I hear he's a hell of a nice guy too (in addition to being hella talented as an actor, director and writer). This was a good 'un. Will have to check out Blast of Silence.❤☮🌎
To be fair, there's lot's of great films that are missing from one's viewing experience. It's nice in a way, because it means we all have these gems waiting for us to see.
Great actor _and_ director! BTW I love the recent billy woods & Armand Hammer music videos he co-directed... he's so cool he _would_ direct a their videos lol Amazing selections!!
Who doesn't love this guy? He is one of the best character actors ever. Tim elevates every film he's in.
He’s also quite a good filmmaker. Watch his film Leaves Of Grass if you haven’t, it’s a wonderful and surprisingly poignant dark comedy.
@blakemeads9225 thank you for the suggestion. I'll get right on that.
Dude was in Nightmare Alley for 30 seconds and managed to be compelling.
@@blakemeads9225❤agreed

One of my favorite Coen Bros films, no doubt. Recently watched it again... and again... and again... and again... it's one of _those_ movies!
What's the rumpus?
yea i was pretty lukewarm first watch but i have it on the rewatch list i have a feeling it’ll be gold 2nd time around
Best summed up with the quote from the Dane: Up is down, black is white.
The breakdown of Cassavetes' style was fucking awesome.
Hello! Tim Blake Nelson, I just happen to have caught you in the criterion collection closet
Yes -- the narration/voice over in "Blast of Silence" is one of the best aspects of this great film. He seems really knowledgeable, love his passion for film
seems?
Well he is The Leader after all
I love this guy! Not a bad moment of acting anywhere with him!!!
WOW, picking Tokyo Story at random is LUCKY. What a great pic.
🙋♂️Pick or see 💁♂️High and Low next before the American remake is released. 🙂Just suggestion.
I could listen to this dude talk about movies all day!
Tim's passion for film and storytelling is contagious
I utterly adore what he said about Llewyn Davis. Beautifully expresses the lingering sadness, melancholy, ache of the film. My personal favorite Coen film.
This guy is a treasure! His performance in watchmen and cabinet of curiocities was amazing, love him.
Love his thoughtful commentary. So insightful and passionate.

The greatest Random selection of all time. Tokyo Story is my favorite movie
Love him, incredible performer. Miller's Crossing is a must see!
Love Tim's energy, he is a great talker.
I’ll now watch all of these films based on Tim’s recommendation. Watched a couple of interviews with him recently and he comes across as an intelligent, knowledgeable and genuinely lovely guy.
Wow. That was great. Seemingly plain speaking, yet articulate and insightful. And great taste!

This man is a living legend. Protect him at ALL costs!
One of the best closet videos!
Tokyo Story! Tim you have a real treat coming my friend.
There's a reason it consistently shows up in the top 3 or so of the Sight and Sound polls.
“Eye of God” on Criterion stat! Tim Blake Nelson, you directed a perfect movie!
I swear this guy has one of the most consistent careers in the business.
A film he wrote and directed, EYE OF GOD, should be in the collection.
It really should, along with The Grey Zone.
It probably will be eventually. I think criterion usually adds new films, whether from America or other countries around the world every month.
Whoa!!nice! any other recommend besides those title buddy?
I absolutely love TBN. His descriptions are spot in. I own two of his choices, Chinese Bookie and Miller's Crossing. His assessment of Turturro's character in Miller's Crossing is perfect, and I totally agree with him.
Landing on Tokyo Story was such a score. Ozu was an amazing filmmaker and an absolute joy to watch.
By far my favorite watch of these. He's so relatable and to the point. Just awesome.
One of my favorite character actors.
Turturro was lights out in Miller's Crossing. The scene in the woods alone is one of the all-time great performances.
I came across Old Henry on cable, and watched it just because TBN was in it. Boy, was I well rewarded.
His performance as Buster Scruggs always brings me gleeful joy.
Wonderful insight into each film. Love Tim Blake Nelson!
*From HEAVYWEIGHTS to O' BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU to JUST MERCY and back to WATCHMEN TV and all of his work: Tim Blake Nelson is a lucky charm to any film or series.*
I love him in Old Henry.
A surprising little gem.
Absolutely.
I got my 74 yr old father hooked on OH. He's seriously had watched it once a week since it came out. Fantastic performance.
Finally someone thoughtful, intellectual nd well-articulated in his picks. Thats sadly rare. I love all videos from the closet, bjt this is soo much better then ppl just praising the movies without giving any interesting take. Great to see!

"Nothing more foolish than a man chasing his hat." -Love Miller's Crossing🥰
We need THE BALLAD OF BUSTER SCRUGGS in the Criterion Collection!!!
”well, that aint good.” Always makes me laugh
The San Saba Songbird
@@inyostudio Also known as The West Texas "tit", due to that bird's melliferous warble.
Great picks from a wonderful actor! His insight into each film is very thoughtful
This guy is a national treasure! Love how he gives a lot of credit to The Coen Brothers. He's definitely one of the seminal character actors of his time.

That Man is an absolute delight. An absolute thrill to listen to Buster Scruggs wax on about Bernie Bernbaum. What a treasure.
Maybe the best spoken person I've seen in the closet! Super interesting thoughts. Love Tim Blake Nelson.
Wonderful salesman of the art form. Passionate, great details and immersed stories.

Just saw Tim on Michael Rosenbaum's podcast and he seems like such a genuine, kind person.
What a guy this was an absolute treat
"I'll cut you some slack that you're grieving as you are, but the fact is Buster Scruggs don't shoot nobody in the back." TBN is a great actor!
wild to see Tim here, but so stoked for him to watch Tokyo Story :’) real special movie. don’t forget make way for tomorrow!
An amazing actor. Loved him as a kid seeing him in Holes, love him still as an adult seeing him in Watchmen. And some amazing picks to boot.

I haven't seen Miller's Croasing in years. Looks like I should watch a couple more times. Always put one in the brain😄
Tim gave one of the best Picks!
What an amazing actor. One of the very best.
Definitely going to have to check out Blast of Silence. Love noir cinema and hardboiled fiction and it sounds like a hidden gem, so for sure going to have to give that one a watch.
Love Tim! So many memorable characters. And a Brown & Juilliard grad as well 🤘❤️🤘
so well spoken loved this
He makes a very solid selection, even randomly as with Tokyo Story
Excellent. Will watch em all
What a great actor. Fenomenal in every movie
Most celebrities love Tokyo Story. And I can’t blame them.
I hope Tim Blake Nelson likes it when he sees it.
i like the adding the film names at the end
He hit the jackpot with that random pick at the end.
Watched Tokyo Story for the first time this year (on the Criterion Channel) and LOVE IT. The only thing I don't like about The Ballad of Buster Scruggs is that it needs more Tim Blake Nelson.

Oh hi there, I’m just going to leave this here.. Old Henry is probably my favourite western since True Grit. Loved. It.

He's one of the best....great actor..❤
I think I'm just realizing I've never heard his real voice.
Love what he says about JT’s performance in Miller’s Crossing. I feel the same way about his performance in Do The Right Thing
As thoughtful and insightful as his wonderful performances would suggest.
another great actor who deserves more leading roles. he'd be great in a tarantino film
Tim Blake Nelson is a tremendous actor and director. I agree with him that Miller’s Crossing is The Cohen Brothers’ best film, Gabriel Byrne and Albert Finney were amazing in it, as well as John Turturro as Tim explains.
I could, no, *want* to listen to Tim Blake Nelson talk about Cinéma for hours
