A glorious masterpiece of a scene.
The feeling of hearing, feeling everything, wanting to be a part of it all but inevitably made an outsider or made to feel like one.

He hears them, talking about hope, their future ... he hears them screaming how much they want to live. And he can't understand their feeling ...

He wants to live, but he's in a midlife crisis x10. The gap between Anders' self image and what he has achieved in life is making him bitter.

It's like everyone around you is living, distracted by their lives, but you don't. At least, it was my interpretation when I saw the movie. Great scene!

My favourite film of all time. Especially as someone who lives in Oslo right now (right next to where this cafe is) this film hits hard every time.

It is one of the finest scene in history of cinema that means your life is your life, nobody gonna damn about it
You are so depressed and unhappy from your life and then you see the whole world is normal, busy in their lives, talking, laughing and you are only sad soul in this world. What a true crafted scene. What a masterpiece!

Great scene. It doesn't have the subtlety of Malle's cafe scene, but it works equally well.

It is a bigger metaphor of filmmaking itself. This is how sound designers go location scouting and do field recordings for the film. They are the observers, the filmmaker- artist- art is allegorically put in perspective in this scene.
It is a meta comment about art- empathy to others and the power of sound design/ recording in cinema.
