I basically walked into the theatre for District 9 blind and it was one of the biggest surprises I've ever had in the theater.
District 9 is so good, I'm still hoping we get a sequel someday.
From the effects to the script and the acting, I think this movie is just brilliant.
My fav genre is budget sci-fi that really understands how to focus on concept and execution rather than graphics or glitz. District 9 definitely hit the right highlights in that regard.
The graphics were very well done but you're absolutely right, the story and acting has to be center stage.
100%. The story and character were what made this. The graphics and effects just helped sell it. Sharlto Copley (Wickus) was just amazing. He’s almost Michael Scott-ish in his awkwardness.
$30 million budget and a 15 year old movie looks better than modern movies!

I like the Vicus actor. He also played in "hardcore henry" another novelty in movie history. A first pirson viewed movie. I could not watch it because i got motion sick early in. But the actor seems to be open to cool projects.

It is not just a literal science fiction film, it is a sharp social critique of racism, xenophobia and apartheid. The director uses aliens as an analogy. It is not mere coincidence that the story of the film takes place in South Africa, it has a whole intention of the director to leave his social criticism.

Question: The film has real-life parallels. The aliens in the film are invaded by Johannesburg residents, which is similar to what happened with Zimbabwean migrant workers last year. Are you worried an action movie with explosions and cool robots might trivialize the issue?
Answer: Within days of us rolling film in Johannesburg in 2008, we woke up to headlines of attacks-something similar to genocide, with Zimbabweans being lynched, burned, and macheted to death. It was no longer that the poorer residents of Johannesburg had issues with illegal immigrants, which is how it had been for years, including when I did the short film. I hope the people of South Africa understand that we set out to make something based on an earlier piece of history. But, yes, the film is about issues I grew up with-like segregation and xenophobia. I’m proud of the fact that we deal with those issues without beating you over the head with it.
this is one of those rare movies where everyone wants a sequel.. hopefully someday.
Fun Fact: The actor portraying Wikus, Sharlto Copley, ad-libbed this entire movie.
Fun fact, no he absolutely didn't. No director, especially one working with a tight budget and a relatively unknown actor, is going to just hope their lead is going to be amazing at making up great lines. Also how would the other actors know what to say and when?
@@theaikidoka Also, note that I didn't say there wasn't a script. Just that Copley improvised his part.
@@Skyhighatrist He might have done several versions of written lines, adlibbing a version of each, but that isn't what you wrote initially. I'm not being picky, it makes a huge difference. I think we both agree Copley did an amazing job, whatever level of freedom he was given.

"Basically him and Teri [Tatchell, the screenplay's co-writer] had a script, a structured story. So a scene would take place by Neill going these are the 2, 3, 4 things that have to happen, these are the beats in the scene, then I would improv around that."
He may not have ad-libbed the entire movie, but it was a majority of the scenes he was in and this is how they did it.
But yes, we definitely agree he gave an amazing performance.

Wickus is so much like Ash of the Evil Dead franchise! He doesn't make smart decisions but, in the end, he makes the right decisions and (oh btw) becomes a complete badass in the process! 9/10
He's a total shithead until the physical changes are severe. It's easy to chalk up the positive changes in him to becoming an alien.
I love District 9! Saw it 2 times on the big screen! Neill Blomkamp is such an awesome director AND writer! He knows how to make sci-fi feel grounded and realistic, deliver a heavy story without being too preachy and wrap it in an authentic world with great action!
Sadly he is super underrated and lost a lot of opportunities in Hollywood because he has no big name.
And Sharlto Copley is just an insanely talented actor!! You should watch more with him!
A lot of the CGI work and props were originally created for a Halo movie project by the same director that fell through, and so were repurposed for this film. You can see the Halo influence in a lot of the art design.

Hello Chandra & Jordan!😊 Yep, that is the command module that fell off the ship in the news footage. It actually pilots the mother ship. The fluid that Wikus got sprayed with was fuel they were collecting for the ship for like 20 years. It was motion capture suits, Jordan. This director (Neill Blomkamp) also made another film about robots called "Chappie" (2015). Great reactions to this very well made film about discrimination, Maplenut Duo!!!!🎬👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Yea, Neil Blomkamp is known for his ability to create great CGI for cheap price.

Such a unique gem of a movie - at no point is he a unstoppable badass - he is always making bad choices only at the very very end is he a hero
You need to add "Elysium" (2013) to your watch list. It's also by Neill Blomkamp and stars Matt Damon. 💯
There aren't many films which start in one direction such as this and then begin a downward spiral which we viewers know there is no coming back from.
There are many references to one such story: The Fly
You guys would really enjoy attack the block (2011) it's a British film. Not very well known but really fun. It's in the sci-fi genre but i won't give any more away.
This was his feature length remake of a short film he did called "Alive in Jo'burg". And I've seen it said that in the original short film, the people in the street interviews who are complaining about the Prawns were actually being interviewed about real life, real world socioeconomic issues and crime etc. in the city. Reframing their answers in a science fiction setting was really quite genius. I'm glad he retained that social commentary in his remake.
Nice. A highly underrated Sci Fi movie. Fantastic story, acting and visuals, drawn over a biting social criticism. Amazing.
Great reaction to a landmark, innovative SF movie. You pretty much said everything. I will add that this was a tremendous box office and critical success in 2009, even getting nominated for a Best Picture Academy Award, but it seems to have been largely forgotten by the public.

Too bad it wasn't made 10 years earlier.
It's a crime that this movie never got a sequel, but I can understand why. If there's was no sequel in mind when writing the script, there's no foreshadowing included for a future film. It'd be hard to make it as good. What we (the audience) want is a sequel, but what we need is just a 10 minute graphic novel or something just to give us some closure.. but if we actually got a sequel, it probably wouldn't capture the magic. We don't really need a whole new movie, we just wanna know if they come back or not lol.
In my head-canon, the only proper ending to this story is:
-Christopher and his kid leave the planet.
-Christopher dies en-route to their home planet.
-The kid remembers that Wikus saved his father, and the atrocities that the humans are committing and tells the leaders of their race.
-The leaders of their race go to earth and simply rain down the fluid upon everyone turning 99% of the world's population into their race
-They find Wikus and offer him a cure to change back to human, but he refuses saying he has nothing left on the earth anyways, and he and Christopher's kid end up going back to Gi'glaxis prime and living out their days.
"Three years" he promised :( I'm still waiting.
Chappie (2015) is by the same people and also star Sharlto Copley.
Also Elysium. It shows what a diverse actor Copley is.

The fact that the humans in this movie never thought, "We should treat the aliens nicely because what might happen when they send a rescue mission is crazy"
The Maori band, Alien Weaponry, from New Zealand decided on that name after watching this movie. I HIGHLY recommend checking that band out!!
The director of this film, Neil Blomkamp, was hired by Microsoft to direct a Halo film before this. That was his dream project, but someone at Microsoft got cold feet regarding him since he hadn't directed any feature films before, and they fired him. He was friends with Peter Jackson, and after talking with him about being fired and how disappointed he was Jackson and his wife helped raise the funding for Blomkamp to make this film, which was based on a short film he had made earlier to highlight his special effects skills.
Well, I for one, welcome our alien overlords. 😂

Neill Blomkamp is a genius. If you like his directing style check out The Creator. One of the best sci fi movies I’ve seen in quite a few years
Great movie. Very thought-provoking and South African to boot. I'd never thought about South Africa having a film industry before this was released.
An incredible movie, one of my favorites, and a masterclass of how to realistically blend cgi and film.
Another fun action movie with Sharlto Copley is the "Indie" film 'Hardcore Henry'. The whole movie is in First Person View. Not many people have reacted to this movie which is a shame because it's pretty incredible.
The very early teaser add campaign was very clever and really original. At San Diego Comic Con all of these posters and signs were spread around the convention center. With the white and red warning signs about the Aliens. Nobody knew what those signs were about, due to them being so vague, just that it had to be an advertisement for something. Either a movie or video game.

"Chappie" & "Elysium" make good companions to this movie as Sharlto Copley (Wikus) plays in both.
Lead actor Sharlto Copely followed this up with starring roles in Elysium and Chappie, both directed by Neil Blomkamp. Another film made in South Africa I recommend watching is Dredd. I also recommend watching the sci-fi military/action film Battle Los Angeles
"Elysium" is by the same director and has some of the same vibes. 🤟😎
The lead in this is more famously remembered as the unstable Murdoch from the A-team revamp.
This is such a cool movie. Such a unique idea. I just re-watched it last week and I always get sucked into it. I like to believe that Christopher Johnson kept his promise, came back, helped Wikkus and took his people back to their home. Right now, it doesn't look like the sequel is ever going to get made, so I just choose to believe it has a happy resolution.
I'm writing this before the reaction starts. If you liked it I recommend "Chappie" and "Hardcore Henry". I think it's the same directors/studio/actors...somewhat. I recommend

The best hard sci-fi asks questions about humanity and social systems. I'm sad that we never got the promised sequel to this. The visual effects are mind-blowingly good for the budget they had.
Great choice my friends. It was a pleasantly surprising movie at the time. It was great seeing it in the theatre.
This movie definitely Falls in my top 20 movies all time.
I've been amazed at how many younger viewers watch this and day things like, "people would never treat aliens like this, " as if they aren't familiar with the human race.

Neill Blomkamp was lined up to make an Alien movie. Imagine that. Elysium is defo worth the watch (Matt Damon), Chappie not so much.

This movie is so well done and unique, I love it.
this director is one of my top 5....elysium is good too...i love the stuff this director builds for the movie...this one had weapons...elysium has a dude wearing what looks like working ghostbusters proton pack at one point ...its amazing
Still a shame this never had a sequel, but it remains one of my favourite Sci fi movies. The effects and the documentary style presentation are great and the story goes in wild directions.

You finally got to see one of the greatest SiFi movies of the 2010's era and for suggestions on other SiFi movies similar to this is "Elysium", starring Matt Damon and the same guy who you just saw playing Victus in District 9. Another movie from the same time frame is called "Chappie" that was done by the same director as District 9, Neil Blomkamp.
Any fav sci-fi? Did you read "Foundation" or "Left Hand of Darkness" or "The Dispossessed" or "The Forever War"?
Fun fact...at 18:53...the actor that plays the warlord in the wheelchair didn't realise the power of the air cannon pushing that stuntman through the wall and the actor's reaction saying "AH HOLY SHIT" is the genuine on camera reaction to the stunt😂😂😂😂

A great movie from the 80s very similar to this is Alien Nation. Aliens arrive and turns out they were slave where they were from. Then the humans try to integrate them into society. It is really brilliant!
One thing that I think flies under the radar for a lot of viewers is how the humans use the word "prawn" for the aliens. It's sounds so innocuous, even a little silly, but it's still a racial slur. Also consider that in all the years the aliens have been there the humans either haven't learned what the aliens call themselves, or they just don't care. Even at the end, after all he's been through with Christoper, Wickus is still using the term "prawn".
The alien ship arrival is analogy for a boat of refugees suddenly arriving in another country.
The representation is entirely through Human media: deplorable conditions, squalor, aimless and leaderless beings. Which is how "refugee boat people" were portrayed in media - portrayed with fear, racism and disgust - around the time the film was being conceived and made. People smugglers bringing boats of refugees into Europe and Australia were becoming sensationalised and hyperfocused in the news, i remember where I am (new zealand) our govt even ran through mock scenarios of boat prople arriving and practicing how to respond and prevent it happening. To date its never happened here. I think this is also when the Australian Refugee Detention Scheme stepped up intensity (be careful if you google it, its horrific).
One of my favorite of the genre. I ask myself why we are getting 5 Avatars but no sequel to this gem.

Another good movie about alien integration on Earth but in a buddy-cop format is Alien Nation (1988).
I LOVED this movie.
If you love sci fi you should do The Expanse. One of the best tv shows ever made. Slow start due to all the world building, but the pace begins to ratchet up late season 1 and it takes off season 2.
So, this is one of those awesome movies that is mind-blowing, yet at the same time, I don’t want to watch it again, from start to finish, as it’s an intense ride

Great movie, I would recommend the A Team movie, which is based on a tv show from the 80s. It's a great action comedy, and it has Charlto Copely from this movie.

Think I remember this was meant to be something else (possibly a Halo film?) - but I think what we got was infinitely better than the intended!
Love the whole thing, but weirdly my greatest appreciation is the effort to make the weapons, what they do & how their explosions, etc look as 'alien' as the creatures themselves!
Along with many others I'm sure - I'd love to see a sequel to this film!
Don't think Neill Blomkamp has made many films - but thoroughly recommend Elysium & Chappie if you've not seen them yet, both Sci-fi & both good! 😁😁
I love this movie! It was odd to feel so bad about humans. It look me a bit to watch the second time, but now it is definitely one of my top 5.
I don't know if anyone said yet but the aliens were done with motion capture, there are some great behind the scenes stuff out there.
The film and series Alien Nation, similar setup.
Strong Apartheid parallels of course. The name of the film is a reference to District 6, in Cape Town, where I grew up. The neighbourhood was a vibrant non-white community that was torn down and the people forcibly relocated. Also those tall white combat vehicles are very similar to the Kasper vehicles used by the Apartheid regime to keep the non-white population suppressed.
Kind of sad that after only a generation young people don't know about apartheid South Africa or even pick up on the real-life parallels in work like this film. Everything done in this movie are things we humans have done to other humans, and many continue to do to this day.
I love the choice to make WIkus basically a coward, I mean he's a guy thrown *WAY* out of his depth, but there's not a lot of movies that make their main character a fairly shitty person with only an 11th hour swap up

I remember seeing this in the theater. It was pretty good, something different. The 'messaging' is a little heavy handed but well worth a watch.
Eh... If this was shot in another country with different actors there would be a lot of people deeply in denial about its message/influences.

This was supposed to be the film adaptation for the HALO video game series but it got shelved and instead they turned it into this movie. Maybe you can react to the tv series (1 season) FIREFLY which is also sci-fi. Or the tv show LOST
Someone MUST have mentioned it, but I'll go ahead anyway - this was based on the South African Apartheid, imagine this, but real and with people. They had them all segregated into districts, District 6, iirc, was Cape Town. It only stopped in the 90s. I don't know enough for details, but it's worth having a quick read about
It was based on the Zimbabwe immigrant crisis in South Africa, not specifically apartheid. The aliens represent Zimbabwe immigrants who were treated badly by both black and white people in South Africa, although there are elements of apartheid in it.
We re still waiting for a sequel to this. when will they do it i wonder?

Another film that uses alien refugees as an analogy for the xenophobia and marginalization among humans is "Alien Nation" (1988). The makeup and FX are janky compared to "District 9" (hey, it was the 80s), but it was popular enough to spawn a franchise of TV films, a (short-lived) TV series, comics, and books.
This is a superb movie and full of political commentary 👏
This movie had some same theme like Avatar, i knew avatar its going to be good because of James Cameron and the 3d effects in cinema, but District 9 was a unespected, not hollywood production, the story always be in Usa. I love this movie so much, and waiting for Christopher Johnson returns (he said 3 years and now are 15 years for a sequel) 😅
