    -A large number of people who reach out to me are the friends, partners, and family of someone struggling with bipolar disorder. Many have scoured the internet - looking for solutions to a seemingly impossible situation. I know there's a lot of information out there on what bipolar disorder IS, but not so much on “what to do about it.” Polar Warriors is all about “what to do about it,” so today I'd like to talk about 10 ways you might be able to help a loved one with bipolar disorder.
    Keep in mind that timing is so important. If the person you care about is too symptomatic, you might have to wait and try these techniques again at a later time. For more videos like this one, check out our playlist dedicated to family and friends.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------
    -My channel is completely dedicated to helping individuals, families, and friends who struggle with, or know someone living with Bipolar Disorder. My goal is to provide actual tools, tips, and discuss topics that can potentially help “Polar Warriors” grow to live a more balanced, peaceful, and fulfilling life.

    I had a psychotic episode and the police were called. It was probably one of the worst moments in my life and just caused me to break further. I could have been fine if they had just called my husband. But my sister who was there didn’t know what to do. It lasted two hours of throwing up in fear, thinking people were trying to kill me, and running from the police. (Big no no) PLEASE don’t call the police unless it is last resort. It mostly causes more harm than good. I had a paramedic that showed up trained in mental health emergencies and was able to save my life. It’s because of him that I am here today.

    I am an employer of someone who has been diagnosed as bipolar. It has been so difficult dealing with what's been going on.... the go to is that the person is "on drugs" .... I hate going there with my own thoughts.... this has helped to restore some trust between us and I want to help them try to get a handle on this. They are an important person, and important to the company. Wish there were more resources for not just those that suffer, but for those that suffer with them.

    My husband with BP is in a mixed state. One week ago I was loved and protected by him. Today I am hated and need protection from him. We’ve been here before many many times. When it lift, he doesn’t emerge until it is safe. I make it safe by apologizing for my emotions, over-reactions, and for making everything about me. Then we start over. I happened across this channel this morning and I feel less alone already. Just getting started, but thank you. Finally something is making some sense!

    I was diagnosed 15 years ago and still struggle, but the highs aren't as high and the lows aren't as low, so I see it as a win. But my 32 year old son exhibits many of the same symptoms as I have. I've talked to him about seeing someone, but he refuses to do anything. It's so sad because his life seems to be on hold. He can't seem to move forward. I ache for him and want to help him in any way I can. But he grew up with a mom that was ill and I think he doesn't want to admit that he might be bipolar as well. I don't know what else to do but keep the lines of communication open with him. When he is very depressed I try to be there even more to make sure he doesn't hurt himself. i wish he would at least talk to someone.

Now for the tough part, above all please DONOT blame yourself! It’s just as awful watching a loved one go through it, but your doing all you can do for him. Unless he starts exhibiting dangerous behavior, it has to be him. I wasn’t ready ( i went off meds for awhile) until mid 30’s. I wish you continued good health and recovery .

    Thank you so much for this. I'm distancing myself from a bipolar person after 4 years of support, giving thousands because she didn't have food to eat, preventing homicide -suicides as she went into episodes and threatened to kill her baby and herself.... I realized I actually did a lot and helped get on meds, therapy and re-establish contact with estranged family members for more support. I felt guilty about distancing myself, but she showed up after years of being no contact with me, which was her choice. Even so, she was in crisis and I took her back, even though I noticed I had nothing in common with her anymore. After four years of continuous crises ...I feel I can set these boundaries and protect myself.

    I deeply regret telling people about my diagnosis. The people who I know are either ambivalent or weaponize it. Employers who I confided in treated me differently or told the rest of the staff. A former partner would gaslight me into having an emotional reaction, then tell strangers that I was psychotic. There was no benefit to telling anyone. Even the psychs who diagnosed me don't care when I come to them with symptoms that I noticed. I think our appointments boil down to five minutes now and it's mostly them trying to prescribe new meds instead of listening. I'm done reaching out to people. It's the same as being alone or a target. I'd rather be alone.

      Yes, it's hard to be open or trust people when you seek help or want people to understand, "supposedly" mental health workers were challenging me and saying my illness doesn't exist, denying my medication, I've been bed ridden, unable to talk to people am a dangerous around people because I'm unpredictable yet no one is willing to help, the only way out I conclude is death, and I have strong intentions to conclude that decision to make the suffering go away and get away from deception and fake people overall who pretend I don't exsist, unwilling to help me and my distress, letting me suffer being alive I want to escape this, I've waited patiently with health professionals and no one is helping me, I'm giving up as much as I try to pick myself up I know I'm going to fall again and attempt to kill myself anyways

We recently helped her move and that was super stressful as you can imagine. I ended up losing my patience and now feel guilty for not being supportive and understanding like I should be for her. What an emotional roller coaster so I've been doing more research today and your videos have been so very helpful as reminders of what people with bipolar are going thru and how best to help them. You sir are a breath of fresh air thank you for everything you discuss openly and honestly, I'm suffering and torn my girlfriend of 7 years is cycling in and out of psychosis episodes, and she cannot see her behavior is abnormal and destructive, she has refused mental health help of any kind, sadly she self medicates with street drugs to cope with her compounding issues, I have tried every angle I can think of to lead her to help,sadly she trashed my home 3 times broke all my things I'm so heart broken , but I have to save myself from her illness and traumas she carries around . Today I had to make the decision to file for a restraing order, hardest thing I have ever had to fo.. this illness has crushed us both. We need more mainstream help and resources. I feel like my hands have been tied. I'm so worried she will die on the streets.

    A couple of weeks ago my girlfriend was released from the hospital with a bipolar 1 diagnosis. Looking back at our old conversations, I began to make sense of how she was feeling. Since then I’ve been doing as much research as I can about the condition, but what’s been difficult is applying that knowledge to our relationship. I’m glad I found this video. Hopefully I can put these things into practice so we can improve our relationship, but ultimately improve her own quality of life.

    I have lost so much and carry a ton of guilt because of this disorder. I've taken my medication religiously for some time now and it helps, but I feel it is important to note that it isn't a cure. I've found my body adjusts to what I'm on and then I have to have it increased. By the time I've figured out what's happened, crap has already hit the fan. It's tough, especially when I see how I treat those close to me. I'd do anything to be able to run away from myself at times. It's appalling the things I say and do. But the worst thing for me is when I'm in psychosis. It's scary, and I project on others that they are going after me in the way I feel like I deserve.
    Your channel is a blessing. You explain things in a way I am unable to due to long periods of mania, where I'm all over the place, then when I'm back to "normal" I'm exhausted. You are saving my relationship because I'm lucky enough to have someone who loves me enough to listen to your videos.
    I have Bipolar Disorder 1 with psychotic features, and it has been hard, just taking it moment by moment. Much love and respect ✌️

      When are people with an illness too toxic for your own mental well-being? Do you totally discard them or distance yourself on a spectrum based on their symptoms. How can you not take things personally even though you know this person is battling a disease? Friendships dissolve over the simplest of things yet dealing with an illness like this often takes familial commitments for helpful bonds to persist and most of those are out of obligation. This is a disease of the mind and whether or not coupled with other issues like narcissism, you must decide whether or not to toss the person aside to better yourself and not let them distort you and your health.
      Being bipolar myself, I've watched it happen with my own friends and family. I've watched relationships objectively be embraced, destroyed and fade with my bipolar friends. Being bipolar with a bipolar friend can be rewarding and difficult.

I Went out with the girl who told me was bipolar, and I failed to educate myself around the issue and when I failed to communicate a concern with her, she sold that as a flaw in a week later told me that she had moved on after spending an amazing three weeks together, she was manic according to what you have explained in this video and I was so excited for it, but it seemed like somebody flipped the switch and turned off all that energy that she was radiating towards me now I feel bad because I don’t have her and the energy is gone .

    This all presupposes that the person has accepted that they have an illness and is willing to accept help. What do we do when they don’t? What can we do for anosognosia or deep denial?

    • @DortmunderFußballclub
      @DortmunderFußballclub 3 года назад +11

      I would say you can try to talk with the person (cautiously in terms of not telling them in a very negative way that something is wrong with them and they're not normal). But in the end, when you're trying and trying and the person doesn't WANT the help because she isn't even aware of the fact that they're e.g. doing harm to themselves and those around them, then slowly you have to distance yourself from them a bit. I have bipolar myself, but I'm aware of the fact that I have full responsibility over me and my actions. The person you're talking about needs to realize this, too. Perhaps, when the person is manic and ends up making a lot of debt or has to face some other consequences from the illness, they will understand. But I truly believe you need to quit the thinking that you can somehow "save" them. Even when you go to therapy, the therapist doesn't solve your problems for you, he's "just" someone who can guide you through this process (I'm not underestimating the power of a therapy, just saying you are on your own in the end). It's definitely helpful when your family and friends want to support you, there's no doubt, but please don't make yourself sick by investing all your time and energy in trying to help someone

She is 64. She is delusional and seems like she is getting resistant to meds. Lots of her meds caused tremors in her arms and legs. + Bi polar warriors. The statement that you said about the cycle of wanting to get help but when you're feeling good you basically think that your ok is exactly like me. I tend to ignore my bi polar health problems on my good days thinking that if I take my medication that's all I will need but now I want to do more to help it. Well today anyway. Thanks for sharing info.
    Edit Btw I think that your friends should be there in the bad times too. My son has friends who visit him in his bad times in fact they have to be Pushy with him. He has a different illness not bi polar though.

    I too love your content I find it very very informative. Lately I've been cycling and feel like my medications are no longer working for me. I know it's time to go onto the doctor and try some more or different medications. I just want you to know this channel really helps me put things in perspective and to know when to get help. Thank you for what you do.

    I wish I had seen this years ago to be better prepared for the relationship I had with a loved one who has Bipolar I & BPD. He didn't tell me in the beginning & I was so not prepared for the 3 year on & off rapid cycling. At times, the anger & meanness were so attacking that it almost broke me. Seeing a lot of your videos explaining the issue being the behavior versus the actual person is helpful. Best advice to anyone in a relationship with someone who has any lifelong diagnosis from diabetes to Bipolar, is to learn as much as you can about it. Talk openly with those in your life about it.

    I'm Type 2 and my husband is usually wonderful. I can be very negative and critical. Also poor me when I think no one understands. I act like Trump and attack verbally when someone is critical to me. Even knowing this, taking my meds and years of therapy, sometimes the extreme negative emotions sweeps me off my feet. I'm 70 now and I'm much more aware but I'm stuck on this emotional roller coaster. The best thing my husband said to me was he didn't understand but loved me and felt bad I fight to keep things in control. When he brings me a glass of water or buys me blue berries, little things but makes me know he cares and is sympathetic.

    #2 Setting boundaries to avoid hurting people when we're not well, I'd love an example of what you're talking about. I'm going to reference this in our patreon community discussion and see if anyone has something to share. #4 This is a good explaination of why we have to help those who help us, we have to do just as much work on our end. Medication alone won't do this, and those 2 seconds after something happens are the most crucial.... that reaction moment, the moment that causes us to spiral and sink and slide. We have to try. If you were playing a strategy game, or a sport where one opponent is up against another.... we would study the hell out of our opponent, finding every trigger, every angle, we'd make notes, we'd make plans, this is no different. I swear I feel like I need one whole wall in my house to be a giant white board for me and my family to make notes, right there, for everyone to see - it won't get forgotten, it won't get ignored. A place to come up with triggers, putting feelings on trial, solutions in certain situations, just all of it. Thank you for another great video!

    My 13 yr old was just diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder. This video is going to help between both the households. Dads and My house. I have Bipolar Disorder, but I don’t know how to help someone else with it due to our circumstances are very different. I learned about mine when I was 27, and we are finding out when she’s 13… I’m glad we were able to label this to set her up for success for life. ♥️

      Hi Kittyrage! Wow, that's a lot going on! I always recommend people to join a local bipolar support group but in your case you can even consider joining a family and friends support group. In these groups, you get support and valuable information about services and programs. In case you are interested Rob offers one on one support on Patreon and he has a weekly support group for patrons only on discord. We have both people with bipolar and those who support them. I’m so glad I found this video. My one relative who lives with me has bipolar. Today as I was in the bathroom my relative who has bipolar was acting all nervous because they had a job interview. The job interview was at 300 and I was in the shower at 1130 and my relative was mad at me because I went in the shower first but they had plenty of time to get ready. When I asked why didn’t you take your shower earlier my relative lashed out on me and said I was being rude and said they were offended. So now I have learned to not blast up my music or take my shower as soon as I get up. I have never been disrespectful to my relative who has the illness. I treat everyone the same. I’m thankful I have found this video. I wish I could tell my relative that thier negative behavior effects me but I don’t want to start a fight.

    I am going with my husband to a psychiatrist on a Monday. In the U.K. I have struggled through 5 years of isolation because after he had a psychotic breakdown in 2018 and spent 6 months in hospital, they insisted he was unipolar depressed even though I’d told them about his cycles, his depression and hypomania. They said they didn’t see any. So for 5 years I suffered and they wouldn’t talk to me because he didn’t give permission, it freaked him out to remember “when he was mentally I’ll and had a psychotic breakdown.” He denied and still does that he is bipolar two….BUT I was proved right when he went to Portugal last November and ended up in a psychiatric hospital. They diagnosed him as bipolar 2 (they talked to me). I am really scared about Monday as my husband doesn’t want me to go…but I’m invited. I got him to sign a consent letter giving me permission.

    A bi-polar person who is manic and in denial is pretty much impossible to deal with... and dare I say dangerous. 🏃🏼‍♀️

    • @PolarWarriors
      @PolarWarriors  3 года назад

      When someone is in denial that can be hard to deal with. Just because someone is manic and in denial though, that doesn't necessarily mean they are dangerous. Many people are not a danger to anyone when manic. They are more likely to be a danger to themselves more so than to others. Of course there are always exceptions, but the majority of people with bipolar are not dangerous by nature. -Rachel (Polar Warriors Team Member)

    My situation seems impossible but it’s not, my main problem that I have is remembering things. Accepting the reality of what is going on. He told me as long as I show improvement, I’m showing him change and I won’t scare him away. We have a baby together and I want to stay with him, because he is the person I want to stay with permanently.

    I got diagnosed at 40, spent the next 5yrs in denial so would refuse medication. I’m finally 2yrs out of hospital (was sectioned 5 times) life is much better for me now as the tablets help stop the extremes. I think it’s super important to take medication so that you can live your life much easier. Thank you for spreading awareness ❤
