One time I bought a pet rabbit while I was manic. It's cool tho cause he's pretty chill and he actually helps me when I'm depressed. Taking care of him gives me motivation to get out of bed on the days where it's really bad. I've managed to train him to use a litter box and I'm working on the transition from the cage to being a free range pet. He also encourages me to eat healthier because I always keep fresh veggies in the fridge for him. I end up munching on them too. I never thought a little bunny could do so much for me.

      That is.so.freaking.cute.
I really want a tarantula for similar resasons. Reading and watching about them during a hard time in my life made them special to me. I'm scared of them. Definately. ..but most hobbyists were terrified at first then end up with 100 tarantulas and or other exotic creatures. The tarantula studies just help me escape during the time I was suffering.
Bunnies. ..not my thing but I'm super glad your friend helps you....so cute.

I have had bi polor for many years. I t is so important to eat a balanced diet. One thing I now do every day is take a large protein drink the sort body builders have. I also take multi vitamins plus iron and fish oils. Also magnesium. This does not get rid of the constant tiredness we suffer but does make it less. You will not feel the benefit right away . It takes a few weeks . It must be done every day.

I tried magnesium to see if it helped my depression. It does. I have to increase my magnesium during the winter. Doesn't resolve the problems, but I don't have to feel bad about them while not being numbed like the psych drugs do. Most all magnesium works for me, but I have had to switch brands here and there because of stomach and elimination issues. I take three tablets a day and I have added one more for this winter. I suffered depression for 60 years and now I don't. Wish you well.

ZeroGHome24 I had a service dog for many years and don’t know what I would’ve done without the companionship. When I lost him, it was like losing a personal caretaker or a child. Especially with how much I really depended on the dog for part of my mental balance. I have two cats now, which is definitely not the same, but they bring life into my home when I really need it and I’m so grateful for them! I’m so glad you have a furry friends like that. Dogs are absolutely brilliant!

If we have the will to give ourselves a hard reboot and become on point with our every day triggers that are presented to us on a daily basis we have to become the watcher with our every day lifes. because the minefield of engaging with every day people becomes such a challenging with mania/ over spending hyper sex/crazy excessive gym work outs.and multiple stimulates..totally exhausted the personality of a formalar one race car but the breaks of a push bike.mind clutter.gets so intence.

I am discovering these videos today and I must say they are of very high quality.
At the age of 66 after a life on antidepressants and tranquilizers I have had a number of full blown anger outbursts to people. I started wondering if this was a late onset of bipolarity. But I now realize it has always been an underlying condition, triggered by alcohol mostly. I got rid of alcohol 10 years ago which improved my overall health but mood swings did not get better lately. I am now seeking medical help to reevaluate my condition. I resigned from my job yesterday fearing that I might again yell at people. I will retire and take care of myself for the first time, even if I have only one year left to live, it’s worth it. Thank you so much for your videos!

This is so true. I believe it takes about 3 months to reprogram our brains.
I learned this in therapy and was recently talking to my boyfriend (he has bipolar) about it.
I used to constantly call myself down. Through spoken words and in my head. My therapist told me to start arguing with that voice. Whenever I caught myself having those thoughts I started to force myself to say no, you’re NOT stupid (or whatever) and start listing some good qualities I have instead.
It DOES feel stupid at first and you don’t think something so simple will ever work. Slowly though, it starts to feel more natural and eventually…IT just becomes the new voice!
I almost completely stopped having those thoughts and when I do now, the other voice immediately intervenes and starts arguing the negative :)
It does take some time but it’s actually pretty amazing to look back once you’re on the other side. Just to realize the impact something so small can actually make.

I created my own positive personal mantra when I was feeling upbeat and happy. It included all that I was thankful for along with the simple steps I could take to help me feel better. I recorded it and keep it on my phone next to my bed. It has been a life saver during depression when I cannot move or get out of bed. When I hear my own positive words, it serves as a trigger that enables me to make the first move from laying down to sitting up. At times I have the energy to recite the mantra. It is a single, simple, positive start to my day and can often give me momentum to take the next step to ease the depression. This does not always work. But when it does, it is pivotal. It took years to think of this because I was embarrassed to admit to myself that I needed this type of "tool" to fight the simple task of rising to meet the day. Robert, I was drawn to the name " Polar Warriors" because we have to fight like hell to take those simple steps and we have to credit ourselves for being brave and resilient.

Michelle Angers wow - thank you so much! When I was struggling and looking for videos about bipolar disorder, it was amazing what I found... it was either someone talking about a textbook definition of what bipolar is, or someone talking about how crappy their life is. It was amazing to me how unhelpful RUclips was, when it is usually my go to for information. That’s one of the reasons why I started this channel… I wanted to help fill a very obvious gap in information out there. I can’t believe how fast the channel has grown and it feels so good to help people. Please continue to stop back by anytime :-)

Thank you so much! And knowing exactly where you're coming from with this message, I'm so proud of how far you come. The strength it takes from one self is amazing from a Polar Warrior. And yes, one voice can change the world of those with mental illness and without a doubt you are my best friend now. A blessing that shows me how to turn the negative into a positive and apply. I'm still searching as I am a white belt as far as defense and I made a promise. One promise that I will keep to inspire everyone and the children coming up facing bipolar disorder and severe depression that I will not do the deed of suicide and in my words.. Weve heard that saying" I would die for you" right? Well that's easy. The way out I get it. But now I say to the good people, I will live for you! And yes, it brings responsibility and focus even though dreadful at times. God bless all that took their own lives as I've lost friends crashing on meth. Yes the dope, the drunken buffoon, pillhead, pothead and etc. We know the names they call us at these religious gatherings. But that's not right as I have looked at the real issue and not a spiritual bully to grab a tissue. God loves us all and encourages treatment for our mental illness. I never partied a day in my life but I self medicated everyday. Thanks my friend for this counceling session. I hope to shake your hand one day. I'll shut up now. Love you all here. It's a beautiful day. Laugh

Great information. It's even good for those who don't have bipolar but life with ups and downs, temporary depression, etc., My life improved over the years by doing the things you mention here. I was never diagnose with bipolar but I have for the most part more calm, peace, general happiness and a sense of control in my life that I didn't have in the early years of my adulthood mostly due to these things you suggest here. I didn't know that this can rewire your brain but I can see how it would, it makes sense. What took a lot of effort before now comes easily and feels natural. Thank you for taking the time to make these videos and helping people. You are a gem.

Actually as a nurse...my patients were my focus and it felt great to help someone. As a counselor for intellectual adults..i loved my job and loved my clients so much that it made me feel great..helping them to help themselvescwas my life..my joy.
I miss that and hope to get back into that career but I need a Masters now..so Im planning that.
I also write..im published...but need to get my stuff out there.
This depression is holding me back..not from writing...i write constantly...its just an effort to get my stories and novels on my laptop ( i write by hand) and get them submitted. I wish I could just DO IT.

Now is better, I don’t cry anymore and can express myself better.... I’m so sorry for what you went through and you seem amazing to me 👍🏼

~word for word you have just said EXACTLY how I feel! I hate, hate hate this illness. 1000s of Distractions. Paralyzing depressions for too many days on end. Right now I've got you on you tube, and my t-v is on --and I'm using my tablet at the same time. Keeping myself in the moment doesn't exist in my world, the many things you are suggesting to help are things I've tried myself. My mind goes into the negative and I become stuck in the past, but only the negative past. TY for helping us, making sense. TY-TY-TY what you are saying makes sooooo much sense and I can totally relate.

Thank you, Robert, for this very thoughtful video. I have people in my life who live with bipolar disorder, so I sometimes tune in to see what you have on offer, as it is always so kind and practical - but this video seems helpful to everyone. We all can get overwhelmed with focusing on the negative in constant small ways and we all could benefit from avoiding - what we in Special Ed called - 'stimming' on those things and going instead to positive things. Thank you for what you do. It's needed and appreciated. I hope you always manage to get through the rough times. You have so much of value to share.

Midday lunch, dinner. I always feel better after each part of my day. My brain has retrained its self. Due to an unfortunate situation. Made me loose everything. Out of my own house. So I know am breaking my old bad habits, addiction, that I haven't suffered from as much. Just wish I could take this mindfulness and travel back in time. Stay strong everyone.

Thank you for these videos, I'm positive that my husband suffered from this illness. We've been married for 17 years and he's struggled for so long with depression, but it's gotten MUCH worse in the last 3 years. You're videos give me so much hope to FINALLY realize what we're up against. Listening to your video on what it's like to be in a relationship with someone that's Bipolar left me in TEARS.... that was the first time that I actually felt understood, you literally described my life, and daily loneliness and pain i experience due to my husband's suffering.
I have a question though... how do I approach him with this? I love him so much and don't want to hurt him.

Awesome truth about the bridges or connection we can make in our brains!!! In 2000 I was officially diagnosed with bipolar disorder and went around saying in my head I want to die, I want to die, I want to die I don't even think I was consciously realise this til a I read a really good book and changed that mantra for I want to live I want to live I want to live.

My partner is about to get out of the hospital for about the 6th time that i know of, but the first with a diagnosis. She had her first manic episode that i have been privy to and has been hospitalized for 3 weeks. After several med tweaking meetings and tests, she seems to be about 25p better, but still not even close to the person i have known for the previous 2 years. I dont know how to help her, so i came to this site for help. It has been a very illuminating experience, and i have a lot to learn. Im glad you are here! Thank you! If it were me getting ou I'mt soon what would help me most from my partner would be reassurance that I didn't make a complete idiot out of myself during the manic phase (even if you have to stretch the truth a little bit) because with manic episodes comes shame even though I was powerless over it. It still brings embarrassment and shame and I tend to push people away to keep from "embarrassing" myself again so try minimalizing your reaction, or how bad it really was. Like try and minimalize it by bringing it up a less and the impact it may have made on you. Trust me....we know and we are masters at pushing people away that we love bc we KNOW what we are like.
      or acting shocked.

Aaaaamazing I recently found this channel and I am soo grateful for your thoughtful insight. I have trouble with explaining and forced explanations are rarely helpful especially if I'm symptomatic. So being able to share your videos with a few clicks and put it directly into the hands of those I care to interact with! If you have someone that suffers with bi-polar disorder and the relationship is important to you? Educate yourself on the way to support your friend before, during and after a manic episode or depressive period. It will be huge for the future of the relationship. I realize that not everyone is willing or able to deal with me in those situations. I would rather not have to be responsible for other people's feelings. Especially when they are insecure and extra sensitive. They are not usually equipped to handle any feelings apart from their own and the sometimes aggressive behavior is to much to handle. Thanks for your help shedding light on this rather dark and often hidden part of ourselves. It has been awesome listening to your gentle voice and the acceptance this platform provides.
