I have looked everywhere for my ruler like that and then I checked the stores and I still haven’t found one, so thanks for this idea. I am going to try it. Thanks for keeping your vintage post up and available.
You are welcome Chrissie - I’m glad you’ll try it. I sometimes wish I had a heavier duty ruler, but this one works very well. I hope it will for you too!
Hi, Kathleen. It’s great to see you after your busy spell! I prefer the smaller torn look, too. Some of the rulers spoil the edge. I’ve seen the rulers created with an edge a couple of times before. For the life of me, I can’t remember by whom or what they used. I’ll have to dig deep in the memory bank! 😘🤞😀💞
Perfect Kathleen. I'm off to use my snips and unused plastic ruler... Its a pleasure to spend time on your channel watching you... thank you heaps for sharing...
Kathleen: what a great idea. I especially think using the edge of a metal strip is brilliant. And using the two tools to create a special edge was clever too. Thank you for those hints. Carol from California
It's really hard to find tear rulers in stores now. I came across a youtube video recently showing how to make one so figured I'd give it a try. I used a metal file to make the little indents. My first attempt wasn't so great because I made them too large and ended up with an edge that looked more like triangles. I made them smaller on the other side of the ruler and now I have a workable tear ruler . It's such a good idea and so easy to do.
I know! I’ve looked and looked for them and I’m pretty good at just tearing by hand, but this really does make it a bit less random. Thanks for reporting on your experience. I thought about trying to dent metal somehow, but this really seemed easy. The metal ruler may make a nicer cut though.
I might try to make one this way. I made one using my soldering iron to melt little divots in the ruler and it’s OK. I think my favorite one is I used my drill press. I just turned it on with a small drillbit running in it and just held the ruler up and just bounced it along the drill bit. I’m sure it was totally unsafe but that’s my favorite one, it also could be the material the ruler was made out of, my favorite one is one of those triangular rulers I think engineers maybe use them.
I thought about my wood burning tool, Lyn, but this seemed a bit easier and I think it worked great. I have to laugh at the drill press!! I think if OSHA ever tries to regulate artists we are going to be in trouble! I agree that a thicker material than these flexible rulers would probably be a better choice.
A steampunk sunflower journal is a great idea! I like the way you made your ruler into a tear edge ruler. My husband has a drumel tool and I think that could work too. Thank you for the great idea!!!
This is great! I like the green one best. I also tried different methods and rulers (also self-made ones) and was never quite satisfied. But this looks very promising. Thank you for sharing!
NEAT IDEA. I HAVE BEEN WANTING A TEAR RULER FOR SOME TIME. THANKS FOR SHARING THIS IDEA!!! I CAN'T REMEMBER THE LADY I WAS WATCHING WEB SITE THAT REFERED YOU. Do take care. Fl.
Welcome Pennie! I’m so glad you found me. Kate is just in that young mom stage and is so busy with work and family that RUclips got a bit demanding, haha. She is well and happy, just not doing much crafting in this stage of her life.
I have a set of the metal ones like yours. I also have a WRMKs one and I'm not really happy with either. I just use my regular metal ruler with no edge design. Maybe I'll try one your way. You can't go wrong with 1.25 for 3. Hugs * L

Thank you Keryn! I know several people have done this, which isn’t surprising given how easy it is to do. Try it.
Thank you for making this video ! It helped me a lot for my calligraphy work and it's soo much quicker than tearing the edge of the paper by hand ❤
@@rutakanade212 Yay! So happy to be helpful. Thank you Ruta!

My pleasure Carol! Thanks for watching!
How clever is that Kathleen! How nice to have created all of those sunflower journals!
Wish I were that clever Nancy! But I’m glad people are, haha! I am almost on overload from the sunflowers…
Sunflowers are ok to be swamped in! 💛
You're right!

I’m glad you think so Jovi! Steampunk anything is a lot of fun, haha. Apparently, a dremmel tool works great! Thanks for watching.
I just made a tear ruler! I made it with the metal snips as you did. Thank you for this vid.
Wahoo! Good for you - do you like it? I’m glad you tried it.
@@BeAgainBooks I love my new tear ruler! Thanks to you!

Clever idea!
I wish I could take the credit Susan - several people have done this before me, haha. But thanks for watching!
Great educational video with so many wonderful ideas. Thanks for sharing. New subscriber here
Thanks for subscribing Wendy! I’m so glad it’s helpful. Welcome!
I've used my dremel or wood carving iron on the cheap dollar store rulers to make my own tearing rulers, they came out pretty good. TFS🌹
That’s a great suggestion - I think I could use one of those tools! Are there other journal related uses for it?
Love this idea, thank you
I’m glad it’s helpful! Wish I could be that clever on my own, but I’m glad to share.
Kathleen, TYFS. I’m am very unhappy with the metal tear ruler that I purchased. I am definitely going to use your technique.
My pleasure Martha! I hope you will get a successful edge!
I will try this, thank you for the helpful hint.
I’m so glad to hear it Loretta! I hope you will love it!

Great idea...wish I'd seen this before I bought the deckle edge one I don't like that much, lol...will be going to Dollar Tree for rulers!
@@irenecasalino7406 I hope this is helpful Irene! It is working pretty well for me!
Thanks… gonna try this! Just found you and daughter in law! What happened to her? Her videos are all 1 year ago? Following!

Yes! that’s what I figured Leslie - and I have four more sides to experiment on, haha.
Tanya from Treasure Books showed how to make one on her channel.
Tanya is so creative isn’t she? I’ll go see how she did hers.
WOW 😍😍😍😍😍👍👍👍👍💯💯💯
Haha. Glad you liked it!
