Another idea for the front strap is to add a snap loop to fasten the front and back straps together. My favorite expensive travel backpack has this and I love it - allows for carrying and feels more secure. ❤
Regarding the floppy front handle, if you leave the slip pocket behind the zipper pocket, you could just tuck that handle inside when wearing it as a backpack. GREAT pattern and tutorial!
JESS!! It's beautiful. ❤️❤️ Thank you for keeping it subdued & classy for us ol' uns! I'm old but SO not boring! 🥰😊 PLEASE stay safe!I have friends in Tampa so I'll be glued to The Weather Channel. Prayers for all. 🙏
The tip about making the pocket lining without the pleat is genius! I really want to try using cork but I know my Bernina isn’t keen on topstitching it. I think this tip will really help 😊
I made it!! During the hurricane too! Love love it !! This is my first box and now I’m so excited for the next ! It turned out beautifully! Thank you for your amazing and easy to follow videos!
I will be picking up my box today and truly cant wait for this one! This is by far the best month! Jess, your style shines through on this bag and its choices
Thanks for this tutorial! I LOVE this pattern so much! Made the mini for my 2 year old grandson. It turned out really cute especially when it was on him.. Have two granddaughters on the way. Looks like I'll be making two more soon!
Fantastic pattern and thanks for introducing it, Jess. I made it with an adobe colored duck fabric with a serape print pleated front pocket and bias. So many compliments in the airport. ❤️. Keep up the tuts and introducing great patterns! You rock!!
With regards to the bulk in the front pocket, Jo from Country Cow has a technique on her recent Ojyma bag release that folds the lining and the outer in different directions so that the folds nest rather than overlap. Thought that might be helpful for this bag too as you still get a concertina in both outer and lining but less bulk. Love the wine and grey corks in this together 🙂
Just watching this new video and something popped into my head! POP!! You had been mentioning how the front handle "flapped" when it was used as a backpack. Noticed that when you were stitching it in place, you did a small 1" square. If you were to have stitched it longer up the strap or incorporated your favorite rivets, that would prevent it from "flapping". Right? Yet still give you that super cute look!! Okay, back to the video!! LOL!!
You're the best ❤️ thank you for these tutorials. I realized today my bag and like 4 of its contents were from watching and following along making stuff with you!
So excited when I got the box last week. I made the large backpack with your tutorial a few months ago and I’m loving the smaller size. The fabric choices rock.
I have made this bag. Is cute. If I make it again, with that top loop, I think I will add a small Velcro wrap around to join the top loops together so that outer top loop does not hang
I have the stuff a month or so ago but have been soo busy. Glad I’m watching your makes! I have a similar store-bought mini and I was JUST thinking about foregoing the front handle on my make. I think it gets in the way for the zip 😂 To keep the strappy front look, I think I’ll be adding webbing that doesn’t pass the top edge of the bag. BUT mine is using a blue and white pokemon print fabric with blue webbing so we’ll see! 😅 I think in your bag a faux front handle would look good.
This was a fun sew and I can see doing it with so many different types of fabrics. I want to try one in waxed canvas and also with some of my shibori’d fabric too.
Regarding the medium weight fusible interfacing, do we use this on the main panel if not wax canvas? Also, why 4 Top gusset fusible interfacing? Do we use 2 for each to make it thicker? Please explain. Thanks!!
You had said you live in Florida. Hope you’ll be safe from hurricane Ian. I’m in Miami. We’ll get rain mostly but no hurricane force winds. BTW I finished this weekend the H2O 2go sling bag by Linds but I followed your tutorial. It was great. Thank you.
Thank you! We're on the NE side of Florida, so should be good with just a few stormy days. But I'll be watching all my friends on the west coast carefully.
I am finally making this from a lighter fabric and want to add the foam interfacing. When do I add that? Or do I just fuse it to the bottom gusset and the front/ back panels before sewing?
Love the fabric you chose. I have this patter and will be making it. I am sad I didn’t join the monthly club and we can’t purchase the kit. But may be joining now. 😂
I bought the rose convertible bag pattern way back when you did the video for it but I haven’t done it yet because I didn’t want to mess up with my little brother machine. I recently bought an industrial juki but I’m too intimidated 🙈 I think I like this bag better tho 👀
My box is coming today .I will start on it right away to help me cope with hurricane . I live on the west side of Fl . I have time till Wednesday, then who knows .
Interior decorator once said. Never start at the corner putting in these zipper. Start a little beyond the corner so when you come to the corner .you go around the corner and stop and not right on the corner. It work better..😊
Really enjoyed your tutorial as always you are such a good teacher. Just wondering how much smaller is this backpack than the regular Making backpack pattern I have.
Your tutorials are so thorough I feel like I could make any of these with your instructions! However I have never sewn anything like this and I'm nervous. Any suggestions on what to start with?
Could you expand on this Mystery club of the Month ??? I would Love to join but it is confusing for me when I tried to go to your channel. There is lots of Month. Help....
Help! Zipper tape in kit allows a cut 18". The gusset measures 19.5". Looking at written instructions it says "if using zipper tape add 1.5"". So the 18" is too short! The kit tape is short.
Add on: I made this mini backpack yesterday and it turned out great! Super easy to sew on my Baby Lock Ellegante. Thanks Jess. Praying for you and my daughter (who also lives in Florida, Deland) as Ian makes his way. Take care!
Great video as usual. However more importantly. Are you and you family ok? Have friends that live in Miami, and know you are in Florida as well. Praying for you all
Thank you for this video Jess; as always it's helpful...! I have a question regarding thread used. I recently purchased my 1st Bernina 770 QE Plus. When you use Tex 40 or Tex 35 thread do you use the same weight thread in Bobbin? If so, do I need to adjust tension on Bobbin case? I typically use Tex 70 or Tex 90 on my Juki DNU 1541S so I'm looking for threads that work with my Bernina. Thank you SO much for your time and feedback....!
From watching Jess' prior videos, I believe she uses polyester all purpose thread in her bobbins, at least for the Bernina. I do this and it works great! Thanks Jess! Always good advice.
No paper pattern in the box. Single sheet with some small cutting diagrams at the bottom as well as a materials list. You could just print the pages you need. That's what i do.
Honestly, even the pattern pieces don't need to be printed. If you have big rulers you can cut the rectangles. I usually keep the digital pattern on my ipad or laptop and just reference it from there.
Another idea for the front strap is to add a snap loop to fasten the front and back straps together. My favorite expensive travel backpack has this and I love it - allows for carrying and feels more secure. ❤
Hi Karen - do you know where I can find a tutorial for the snap loops? Your help would be appreciated.
Where would you find that snap loop video? Sounds like something I’d like. TY
Regarding the floppy front handle, if you leave the slip pocket behind the zipper pocket, you could just tuck that handle inside when wearing it as a backpack. GREAT pattern and tutorial!
Oooo that's a great suggestion! Thank you!
That’s my plan too!
Or you can just add a tie that holds both straps together. Thats what i did
@@swatiboral5271 or small handles on top
JESS!! It's beautiful. ❤️❤️ Thank you for keeping it subdued & classy for us ol' uns! I'm old but SO not boring! 🥰😊

Made this one! My second bag ever! Everyone loves it and wants one. I'm getting ready to make one of the slings you have next.
I love colors too but I'm glad the monthly box is more toned down because not everyone likes disney.
When the butterflies matched up perfectly!!!🎉
I made it!! During the hurricane too! Love love it !! This is my first box and now I’m so excited for the next ! It turned out beautifully! Thank you for your amazing and easy to follow videos!
Thanks for the awesome video. Finished mine today. Couldn’t have done it without the video.
I just got my kit in the mail a couple of days ago and the first words out of my mouth were "oh wow" I am so excited to get started on this backpack!
I will be picking up my box today and truly cant wait for this one! This is by far the best month! Jess, your style shines through on this bag and its choices
Awwww thank you! I hope you love it!
You're the best. Thank you for such a great video. Prayers for everyone in Florida.
Thank you so much Debbie! Definitely going to be an eventful week.
I love these types of bags. I will be making sure this is next on my list!!
Love it! I would love to add a snap at the top of the handles to snap together.
Great idea!
Thanks for this tutorial! I LOVE this pattern so much! Made the mini for my 2 year old grandson. It turned out really cute especially when it was on him.. Have two granddaughters on the way. Looks like I'll be making two more soon!
Oh my word, I bet it looks ADORABLE on that sweet baby!
Congrats!
Wool hooo!!! Can't wait to sew this. FANTASTIC colors Jess!!
Thank you!!
Great video! Thank you!
Just got my pattern and now I gotta pick my fabric! 😅
Fantastic pattern and thanks for introducing it, Jess. I made it with an adobe colored duck fabric with a serape print pleated front pocket and bias. So many compliments in the airport. ❤️. Keep up the tuts and introducing great patterns! You rock!!

I was so excited when I opened the mystery box. I’ve been wanting to make this bag and the fabric you picked is so cute!!😊
I'm so happy to hear that!
I love your special color touches, thanks, I can't wait to flex this new bag muscle!
Heck yea! Such a great learning pattern

Such a good idea!! I love that front flap, I would hate to leave it off. So creative!
Great Idea--I'm going to do this!
You're the best ❤️ thank you for these tutorials. I realized today my bag and like 4 of its contents were from watching and following along making stuff with you!
What’s the point of folding the lining of the pocket? I’m not trying to be mean, I am honestly wondering what it helps or does.
Lazy binding? Oh well. I guess I'm lazy. Love the fall colors and the color blocking.
I love the materials that were chosen for this box. Also, Thank you for the FUZZY SOCKS!!!
Finally sewed this up today. It worked out so well.
YES! I was playing with some ribbon and tying the loops together. I love the look with both handles.
They joy with the pattern matching made me smile so big :) thank you for always being so genuine!
I LOVE this project!!!! The shape, the colors, it's all so nice!
I have the stuff a month or so ago but have been soo busy. Glad I’m watching your makes! I have a similar store-bought mini and I was JUST thinking about foregoing the front handle on my make. I think it gets in the way for the zip 😂

Could you leave off the backpack straps and add the handle to the backside?
Love the tutorial as always. Would also love to know where you got the printed foil vinyl and rainbow webbing from.
This was a fun sew and I can see doing it with so many different types of fabrics. I want to try one in waxed canvas and also with some of my shibori’d fabric too.
Done .. Yeah!!!! Just in time for the arrival of the new Mystery Box in the mail today :0)
Thank you for this titorial . It helped me so much
Loving the tutorial so far.
I’m so excited to make this pattern! Your material choices are fun!
Awww thank you!
I totally love this bag!! I will b ordering the pattern and making a mini bag for myself. Thanks for sharing.
I have so many ideas for this pattern. Such a great choice before the holidays.
I'm so excited you chose this bag! I have always wanted to make one!
Regarding the medium weight fusible interfacing, do we use this on the main panel if not wax canvas? Also, why 4 Top gusset fusible interfacing? Do we use 2 for each to make it thicker? Please explain. Thanks!!
Can this one fit a school folder?
so freaking cute! I love your tips and tricks and quality of your videos!
Awww thanks Janice!
Tears.of.joy! yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So glad I found your channel. I feel confident making this now. You’re awesome!!!
You had said you live in Florida. Hope you’ll be safe from hurricane Ian. I’m in Miami. We’ll get rain mostly but no hurricane force winds.
BTW I finished this weekend the H2O 2go sling bag by Linds but I followed your tutorial. It was great. Thank you.
I think Jess lives north east Fl . She is 💯out of hurricane cone .
Thank you! We're on the NE side of Florida, so should be good with just a few stormy days. But I'll be watching all my friends on the west coast carefully.
I finally completed mine from the Sally tomato kit. I love it!❤🎉
I am finally making this from a lighter fabric and want to add the foam interfacing. When do I add that? Or do I just fuse it to the bottom gusset and the front/ back panels before sewing?
I couldn’t have sewn this bag without your video tutorial. 🎉. Where do we post pictures?
Why wouldn’t you create a snap wrap to secure the floppy handle?
I wish I could go backwards and purchase this box! I really love this bag!
Thank you, thank you! I just got this pattern and wanted to try the mini version before following your full size tutorial.
You are so welcome!
I don't know what you are talking about? That backpack looks super cute on you :)
Love the fabric you chose. I have this patter and will be making it. I am sad I didn’t join the monthly club and we can’t purchase the kit. But may be joining now. 😂
I almost signed up and after seeing this, I signed up for next month!!! It is super cute!!!
I love your pop up tips! This backpack is beautiful.
Lol 😂lottery ticket , your amazing don’t underestimate yourself .
This has been on my list to make!! All the ones I see turn out so cute!
It's such a great pattern!
Question about the front pocket...you said you don't need both a slip pocket and a zipper pocket. Could you leave it for both? that would be cool...
I think you could do one of those snap closure things to hold the handles together.
where can I find the sizes of the pieces? thanks.
I bought the rose convertible bag pattern way back when you did the video for it but I haven’t done it yet because I didn’t want to mess up with my little brother machine. I recently bought an industrial juki but I’m too intimidated 🙈 I think I like this bag better tho 👀

Oh Mariana, keep me updated. That is one gnarly storm out there, we need to be careful.
OMG You killed it 💯❤👌👍🤩🥰😍
So excited to make!!
Hi jess I just wanted to say I hope you and your family are safe down there in Florida after Ian
Would you do a tutorial on the Noodlehead sling bag?
On the list!
This is absolutely adorable! Getting ideas for Xmas!
Right?! Such a great gift!
Always love your videos. Love the butterfly fabric.

I was having the same issue. How do I compensate? :-(
@@michelles.781 Hi... I ended up making zipper tabs to compensate. I used some scraps from the lining fabric.
So cute! Does anyone know the finished dimensions of this bag?
Great job Jess! My box is out for delivery and I'll have it today. Going to get started probably later on. ;)
Add on: I made this mini backpack yesterday and it turned out great! Super easy to sew on my Baby Lock Ellegante. Thanks Jess. Praying for you and my daughter (who also lives in Florida, Deland) as Ian makes his way. Take care!

Wow 🤩 magnificent job. Thank you 🙏
Is this September’s box or October?
So cute bag 🎒
To avoid the floppy handle you can make a slip pocket on the front and tuck it in the pocket whole it's worn as a backpack
This is so cute!!! ❤
It is beautiful and looks hard
I didn’t join the club in time so I will need to order each item separately to make this.
Has anyone made this without the backpack straps? I was thinking shoulder strap instead…
Is there a paper pattern in the box? My box hasn’t arrived yet, but I got an email from Jamie with the 17 page pattern attached…that’s a lot of ink!
No paper pattern in the box. Single sheet with some small cutting diagrams at the bottom as well as a materials list. You could just print the pages you need. That's what i do.

Not sure where you live but hoping you and your family are in a safe place.
Awesome
Would you be able to add a water bottle pocket or is the bag to small?
WOW
Beautiful please in spanish 🙏
I wanna be your mother-in-law!!!
