    Why does it feel like RT is in the midst of a studio-wide mid-life crisis?

    • @seekingabsolution1907
      @seekingabsolution1907 10 месяцев назад +108

      Because it started over 20 years ago (I think). Also it got bought out by a major corporate conglomerate this is just what inevitably happens once a capitalist enterprise reaches that point, not always immediately but eventually the drive for growth and profit maximization leads to the death creativity as it becomes obsessed with replicating its previous successes but larger, extracting more money out of each individual customer and more work out of every worker. Which tends to make things a worse experience for all involved.

    • @MrTigracho
      @MrTigracho 10 месяцев назад +48

      @@seekingabsolution1907 Indeed. While the understanding of making money heavily relies and correlates with how a franchise is handled, which heavily includes the narrative and execution of their works of fiction and Entertaiment coming from said franchise, and thus a financial outlook is always needed, if this supersedes the creative drive and is unable to understand that the boundaries between what to do and not to do when it comes to it's relationship with the fandom, you can only except to do as worse as RT.
      Also, you know, DON'T BE RACIST OR SEXIST. The horror stories of employees working at RT makes me genuinely believe a place like this was doomed to fall from the very beginning.

      Yes. We almost had 'Cockbite Studios' but they wanted to make it more ad friendly since no one would sponsor their first attempt 'Drunk Tank'.

    putting RVB on their channel should have been treated like a holiday event! the website should have been re-themed around it. they should have a banner at the top to advertise that RvB was now exclusive on the site AND MOST IMPORTANTLY they should have gotten at LEAST 3 new episodes ready for the move to entice viewers over by FIRST announcing that they had 3 new episodes of RvB "available only on the RoosterTeeth website!" then once they butter ppl up with that, they should announce in a SECOND VIDEO (a week later) that the show isnt "coming back" to youtube. that gives the impression that they have a plan, that things are going well with the website, that they were successful and dont need youtube anymore BUT they should still keep uploading behind the scenes stuff and announcements to youtube.

    as a camp camp fan who went through the whole 5 year hiatus waiting for the show to be back i was so excited about the special episode we got this summer and was even more happy to hear that we will be getting new episodes next year too. imagine my surprise when i found out not only causal viewers but also other camp camp fans don’t know that in the midst of all this they created season 4 of cc five years ago. i really wanted to act surprised but after years of following the company it didn’t even come from a left field. all of this boils down to rts biggest problem which is just utter lack of investment into any promotion of their projects, not just to the public as advertisement or payed promotions on other platforms but on their own sites and social media in the first place. it’s so disheartening to see that your favorite show, camp camp rwby rvb whatever, is not hated by anyone more then by the very people in charge of it.
    i saw someone else in the comments call rooster teeth a good example of a parasocial company when in my eyes it couldn’t be as far from the truth as it gets. rooster teeth dont have an unhealthy and close relationship with their fans, they don’t care for the wants or needs of their fans whatsoever, they don’t hear fans when they ask for the company to do something smart for once for the basic necessities of a show promotion. everyone at rt expects their fans to do all the work by spreading the show around and giving it attention but this isn’t youtube 2017 anymore so it won’t work like this. rooster teeth is no longer a small passion project of a few friends, it’s a huge company that needs to start acting like one before it’s too late.

  • @thatguythere6161

    I think a big issue with RT’s youtube channel is that they’ve put a lot of their stuff on one channel. For example, A while ago they had a single channel for red vs blue content, which later turned into the rooster teeth animation channel. The problem was, I wasn’t interested in all their animated shows. Just red vs blue and rwby. But it was fine, because it wasn’t that frequent. But they JUST KEPT ADDING things, and eventually, I unsubscribed because the majority of the videos on their channel were either podcasts, behind the scene videos, or gaming videos only related because it was the animation team playing. That’s not even counting their actual animated series I wasn’t watching. And the big problem with this is that even if you have a series as popular as rwby or rvb on your channel, if you stick a bunch of content no one watches in between that, youtube will stop recommending the popular series too.
    This goes to show that rooster teeth has had this problem for a long time. They constantly show you things other than what you’re looking for in the hopes that you’ll watch them, but it just ends up hurting the show we came here for because we have to sift through 100 shows we don’t care about to find the one we like.

      From what I know about YT there is/ was also a thing called subscriber burn, where if a large enough amount of your subscribers don't watch the content you put out the algorithm stops promoting it even if it's still getting views, which can create a downwards spiral that kills the video and can eventually kill the channel's visibility if it happens often enough. By flooding a channel with variety content when most of your appeal was in a few specific subjects (like RWBY & RvB) it increases the risk of videos being ignored by the viewer base.

And RT wonders why the company is failing 🙄
    Also I totally agree you're comment about about how all companies care about is money, and it just makes me sad that so many companies seem to sacrifice quality over quantity, I think I've sad this before but I'll take one one show that everyone has poured their heart into over 100 shows that were rushed out the door that people will only watch once and never again

    The RVB stuff hurts the most for me really. I hate not having some of Monty's best work so easily available. I think his RVB work is really unrecognized. Obviously we have the great Tex vs the Reds and Blues fight as one of RTs biggest videos, but the entire series is a true goldmine. It's honestly where I think his hand to hand work shines brightest and not with Yang despite hand to hand being her primary mode of fighting. It's very flashy and memorable, but the more grounded moves in RvB shows just how technical and intimate Monty can get when it's just several characters duking it out up close.
    RvB is full of flashy moments similar to the Nevermore fight from RWBY such as the frozen mountain top fight between Tex, Washington and the Meta. Yet moments like the highway heist or Tex vs York, Meta, and Wyoming show his ability to create upclose non super powery fight scenes. Honest to god watch the highway heist or any freelancer fight and it is just stellar.
    Much as I appreciate the YT reuploads most of them are disorganized compilations and I missed having them in high quality while easily accessible. Seems it's time to download them for my own sake before RT inevitably goes under, which from the move of their animated superstars from YT to their main site seems to me the beginning of the RT death march.

    It's pronounced Reck-cree-oh, and it's originally a youtube channel of 4 friends each who are niche internet celebrities come together and create scenarios for the rest of the group to experience/playthrough, ranging from typical 'truth or dare' to 'can you survive creepypasta' and other bizzare wacky things. The main appeal is the personal interactions of the group in high stress or unlucky situations and their reactions to each other. I would recommend this series on their actual channel as they rely on it to fund their own separate projects, they have great chemistry and make tons of jokes that become running gags throughout the series.

    personally, I ALWAYS thought the RT site was trash - videos lagged horribly back in the day (haven't been on in a while to see if they still do) - navigating it was always a hassle, and it always felt like it was held together with duct tape and prayer! And then there's the true root of all evil, RT's TERRIBLE business decisions!!! From practically day 1, they rarely, if ever, made any good business choices. It worked for a small indie channel on youtube, but once they went corporate it was astounding they lasted so long! Just to start, they were known for their workplace toxicity for years, because they never could really shake the fact that they were supposed to be a professional business and are no long a small group of dude-bro dorm friends.
    The big example is EVERYTHING INVOLVING GEN:LOCK!!! Like... that is a whole travesty and in my opinion, the true death nail for the company. That series financially crippled them, pretty much killed their new animated shows, etc...
    Then there's RWBY and the constant terrible production choices there - like constantly adding new characters and assets despite having a time crunch; and rushing the writing, barely even working with a single draft of the story before animating anything, or how nothing is allowed to happen except for at the beginning and end of each volume. And then you have Ice Queendom - yay RWBY has an anime... that essentially repeats the same episode like 4 times iirc. And the various manga and other side content that just stick to the Beacon era - for good reason, it was easily the best despite all its flaws. Which is really funny when RWBY never really hinted at being a school anime, all its original trailers hinted it being more of an adventure that's on the move - like Avatar.
    And lastly, BY GOD THEIR MERCH SUCKS!!! Like... they don't seem to have a creative bone in their bodies, they are sitting on a gold mine of potential and they constantly squander it. Imagine, "RWBY AS A VIDEO GAME!!!" and every attempt sucks, never capitalizing on the series strong suits toward a video game medium, hell I unironically could make a better RWBY game in a handful of months than any RT released. But then you have clothes with lazy designs, ugly plushies, cheaply made figurines (from what I heard, since they were SO DAMN EXPENSIVE despite also never really looking good - quick example being the V4 beowulf statue - the idea is neat but personally I was never a fan of the V4 outfits and it cost $400), all their mech is low quality, ugly and overpriced, which sucks because that is a perfect source of revenue collecting dust

    Hey, I'm subed to RECREYO, their hallarious. That's a solid grabb for RT.
    I also want to push back on that ending bit there. As youtube might be a good place to watch shows, but that doesn't mean they are good for shows. Helluvaboss itself is more of the exception to the rule than the rule. Helluvaboss isn't funded through youtbe because there is no way thats monetized it couldn't even be funded entirely with their merch either. Their studio spendel horse actually has some bigg backers behind it and even sold their primary show hazbin hotel to a major a major streaming service. Even then, their production hasn't always been great. Only two episodes came out in 2022 and couldn't even show their season one, finally on time, because of legal issues involving Kesha writhing a song for them.
    RUclips just hasn't been a stable place for long-running animated series. Im surprised RT shows stayed this long and didn't leave or vanish all together like Bravest warriors or Epitate Erased.

    I'm really glad that, despite RT kinda sinking, DB is still going strong.

    What’s funny is that Recreyo i’m pretty sure isn’t even being made by RT specifically, there’s a channel for that makes numbers but it’s something that just seems to be made by separate creators, I guess they just let RT put their videos on their but you might as well watch it in the channel itself since I don’t think RT can make something they don’t directly own exclusive.

    I care nothing about Camp Camp or Rooster's Teeth's podcasts, but Red vs Blue holds a special place on RUclips since RVB was born on RUclips. It's incredibly stupid of Rooster Teeth to take their RVB channel down and stuff the series into a barely functional website. I even made a private RVB playlist for my viewing pleasure, but it's almost entirely vacant now. And after seeing all the crap they have on their website, I don't feel like going there to watch my favorite RT content.

      My understanding is that RT does comedies far better than they do drama. They're a studio that wants to make fun and light-hearted content, but they seem obligated to make RWBY a miserable story about miserable people.
