    I absolutely agree on Number 1, Critter. Velma is the absolutely WORST abomination that has ever came out in 2023. They didn't just butchered an entire classic series, but also allowed a MORON to live out her fetish dreams and destroy so many people's childhoods. Velma is the biggest flop of 2023 and it needs to be burned to the ground. Wiped out from history. Without evidences about it's existance. Give it the Damnatio Memoriae treatment.

      And yet Velma is getting a second season. Meanwhile people like us will have to wait 2, 3 or 4 years for season 2 of Chainsaw Man, Hell’s Paradise, Castlevania Nocturne, Zom 100 Bucket List of the Dead and My Happy Marriage to come out. Worst of all, shows like Praise Petey get cancelled after one season.

    My biggest problem with Velma was how it felt like it hated being a show. Every third joke was about breaking the 4th wall or story tropes. They were trying to copy Deadpool and Rick n Morty but they over used it. Deadpool was the only character who broke the 4th wall and the other characters just thought he was crazy. Rick n Morty only had a couple jokes like that. At most they had 1 episode about tropes.

    Not gonna lie, I applaud Velma for one thing. Advertising to me how awful of a person someone is upfront, Mindy Kaling. I have never encountered a show where they portray their main character as so toxically venomous and the VA behind it proudly presenting it as an exact match of her personality. Like, I would usually think maybe this was the fault of the writers, but Mindy is so vehemently eager to take credit for how extremely OC-ish Velma is that I cannot help but take her at her word. And looking at evidence of Mindy’s past, it only makes me believe her word even more. Wow, just……bravo at advertising what a stupidly hateful person you are of everyone and yourself. Glad I could have the pleasure of never knowing or meeting you.

  • @playererror4044

    Best thing about Velma is it didn't get to be the first time Velma was into girls in a Scooby Doo thing, yeah it's pretty much a long running joke the fans had, but I am so happy it happened in 'Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo!' first, because, well A: her crushing on Coco was adorable in that film, and B: It means Velma doesn't get to even be a footnote in the franchises history (Beyond, maybe 'Our first atempt at being for adults exclusivley was a terrible idea)
    (Also dumb thought: Adult Scooby Doo surley can't be that difficult, you could just do like, a standard mystery show but the villians wear elaborate costumes to hide and like, murder people. Heck maybe our gang can be in serious danger and get shot at or something? Like why did we need a stupid brain stealing plotline where everyones an asshole?)

      Live action show where rather than amateur mystery solvers they're private detectives (with a similar background, with some changes)
      Scooby's a former bomb squad dog, but the experience left him skittish and easily frightened.
      Velma's the standard academic of the group, skilled in the sciences and forensics from a childhood spent obsessing ovee them
      Daphne is the badass in heels, coming from old money and a bit of an adrenaline junkie
      Shaggy flunked out of military school and police academy, and is a bit of a foodie, but he's very good with people that aren't in Daphne's crowd of the higher social elite
      Fred is the heart and leader of the team, choosing cases and driving the van they use (it was the cheapest vehicle they could get that would fit all of them)

    Man, 2023 was a wild year in terms of quality. Just a rollercoaster of highs and lows.
    For movies, we had the highs of The Super Mario Bros Movie, Godzilla Minus One, and Barbenheimer, but we also had the lows of Shazam 2, Quantumania, the Flash, and Napoleon.
    For video games, we had the hits of Baldur’s Gate 3, Tears of the Kingdom, Armor Core 6, and Lies of P. At the same time, we had the horrors of Gollum, Kong, Walking Dead Destinies, The Day Before, and that horrible Avatar the Last Airbender game that everyone forgot about.
    And then we have TV shows! It’s crazy to realize that RWBY V9, Ahsoka, Secret Invasion, and Velma all came out the same year as The Last of Us, Legend of Vox Machina S2, My Adventures with Superman, and the absolutely incredible live action One Piece.
    I think we overall got more good this year than bad, which is great and hopefully a good sign for next year, but when we got something bad, it was scraping the bottom of the barrel in terms of quality

    What makes Secret Invasion even more embarrassing is that the Avengers Earth’s Mightiest Heroes animated series - a cartoon from 2010-2012 that is over a decade old - was able to do the whole Skrull invasion storyline over its two seasons in a more interesting and well-written way than this big-budget live action series.
    Like… wow, imagine doing such a bad job that a decade-old animated show that Disney cancelled after Season 2 just to make another different Avengers cartoon that was closer in style to the MCU was able to outclass Secret Invasion 10+ years before Secret Invasion even came out.

    • @Jackson-ub1uv
      @Jackson-ub1uv 5 месяцев назад

      What's _really_ embarrassing is that Doctor Who did the same thing with just _two episodes._ Not only did The Zygon Invasion/Inversion also deal with shapeshifting aliens trying to find a place for themselves, but it also goes into what happens to the _people_ who just want to live peacefully.
      Most of the episodes' runtime is dedicated to showing how the actions of a small, radicalised group impacts the rest of the people they're supposedly trying to protect, whilst also making full use of the Zygons' shapeshifting abilities. Some of the most memorable scenes include the Zygons taking the forms of a drone operator's family members, making her hesitate for long enough that the drone strike was aborted. Another scene had them pretend to be captured relatives, with one of them disguised as a soldier's mother and _begging_ not to be shot.
      Having shapeshifting villains gives writers an _immense_ amount of opportunities for drama, conflict, and character growth, but somehow the writers at Marvel managed to screw it up.

    "Don't you wanna just hear someone else validate your frustrations by venting about it too?" - Critter 2023
    Damn, Critter is telling the truth.

    I was surprised to see both The Mandalorian and Loki make this list until I realized you were talking about the latest seasons. After the all the flak BOBF received, I wasn't jazzed about Disney making more Mandalorian. The first two seasons were good and helped stack up the Disney Era roster, but they drew it out too long and fumbled it.
    Loki I was optimistic for because the first season was great and more of Tom Hiddleston's Loki is always welcome. I have yet gotten a new subscription to Disney + to watch this and more of the Bad Batch. Even after your review, I might still check it out.
    And yes, Velma needs to burn in hell with the rest of its outdated humor.

    As someone who watched both Clone Wars AND Rebels, I had a lot more of an appreciation for Ahsoka. Leia is at least somewhat familiar with Hera and the Ghost crew (they were at the Battle of Scarif), so their relationship and the C-3PO cameo made sense.
    The relationship between Ahsoka and Sabine was… unexpected and unfounded? They didn’t interact like that in Rebels, and it’s a pretty lazy parallel between them and Ahsoka/Anakin, the snappy/unruly apprentice and the experienced yet bold master.
    Thrawn’s presence was undoubtedly underplayed, from an Expanded Universe badass warlord, to a legitimate and intimidating threat in Rebels, to the guy who’s basically Caesar from Fallout New Vegas, a man on the throne, barking out orders without actually doing anything. Enoch was hard as fuck though.
    The other villains were, aight. Skoll and Hati, while being a fun allusion to Norse mythology, were interesting additions to the universe. Morgan Elsbeth was, something. Just sort of boring, I’m glad to see Nightsisters in more canon.
    Ezra’s return was sick. He felt so, Ezra. Even after years of being stuck in this other galaxy, his optimism and humor hasn’t been lost, which might sound unrealistic, but that’s just how Ezra was. I really don’t like how he was switcherooed with Sabine and Ahsoka though. It makes some sense thematically and to keep certain relationships, but it just feels like nothing has been accomplished.
    I agree about the character interactions, they were very lackluster. I hadn’t really noticed since it’s Disney Star Wars, but even in comparison to previous shows this shit stank. The action was fairly entertaining.
    That whole flashback sequence with Anakin was so fanservicey, but I fucking loved it. Only time fan service has actually made me hyped for a whole episode, and that’s saying something in this show.
    I’d give the show a 6/10 or maybe a 6.5/10. Needs some work, but as a continuation to Clone Wars and Rebels, it was serviceable and sometimes really successful. But for the love of god, can people please stop surviving LIGHTSABERS TO THE FUCKING STOMACH-

    • @My2Cents.iF7934
      @My2Cents.iF7934 8 месяцев назад +1

      I wouldn't say Thrawn's presence is underplayed here, they make mention of him dozens of times throughout the first part of the show, and they def don't try to downplay what might happen if he were to return. He's a chessmaster, moving and sacrificing pieces throughout the (admittedly few) episodes he's actually in to achieve greater goals. He's calculated, he's knowledgeable about the threats at hand (on basically all fronts). He's more of a strategist than any of the other villains, and that's what makes him such a threat.
      I agree with the Caesar comparison to an extent, but he's less of a tumor-addled angry shitstain in the desert than he is a Johan Liebert without being an unapologetic sadist.
      Gotta agree with the casting call for him and Ezra though. Eman Esfandi was absolutely phenomenal, and I'm genuinely glad we're getting to see him again.
      Morgan was weird to see in the series because she looks like someone I know personally, but that doesn't take away from her role in the show (being sort of an uninteresting antagonist until the very end of the show.
      Overall, yeah, I'd agree with your scoring. Totally serviceable, just like Loki imo, but they could've done a LOT more with it. Hopefully they do so, if they have a second season

      I agree, RWBY V9 ain't perfect, but it is waaaaay better than V8 by a long shot IMO. I can forgive some of the negatives because the season was under duress from being released because of the two-year COVID-19 delay among other behind-the-scenes issues. That kind of stuff can hurt the production and writing of a new season. Plus it creates plot holes.
      Plus, in WBY's defense, every time they noticed something wrong with Ruby or when she tried them herself, the next plot point or inconvenience interrupts them and they drop it altogether. It would make more sense if Ruby had actually made an effort to hide her pain from them. Them ignoring her pain can still work as they're so caught up trying to make the best of their current situation while trying find a way home. They put so much faith in Ruby that they're unintentionally putting more pressure on her. The way I see it, Ruby's hero complex combined with her failures and insecurities are what's holding her back from talking to her teammates about it. She doesn't want them to think she's weak. Plus, I can see Ruby acting indifferent about Yang and Blake's relationship because she feels insulted that they get a happy ending after she just lost her close friend. It was too soon.

    14:59 Yep. I've been wanting and waiting for and anticipating an Ahsoka show for YEARS. The Clone Wars series might just be the best thing to come out of Star Wars as an IP, and words could not describe how much I wanted to see the dynamic, developed, well written, unique, flawed, badass character that was Ahsoka in her own show. But they just COMPLETELY demolished her character. It doesn't feel like Ahsoka at ALL. Clone Wars Ahsoka and this Ahsoka are written like entirely different characters to the point where it feels like she doesn't HAVE a character anymore. NONE of the characters from Ahsoka feel like characters. They feel like plot devices. They feel like lines of script stuffed into an actor that says their lines at an abominably slow pace to stretch out runtime. Ahsoka was fiery and passionate, headstrong but still wise and kind, and most importantly, she was INTERESTING. But it's as if she was killed off and the character we have now is her watered-down corpse. What a thorough disappointment

    You know...while we're talking about Velma...
    So, when it was revealed that the cast was being race-swapped, my initial thought was "I don't care, but why?". I mean, Scooby-Doo has an iconic set of characters, so why change the look? Then I saw that each main character was a different race and thought "Oh I get it. We're mixing things up with diversity here. Now it's more than one race being represented. Good on you!"
    And then.... Velma starts barfing out white guy this, black guy that, just...nothing but stereotypical shit "jokes" that the punchline is "haha get it? They're -insert race here-". Fred kept stereotyping Velma with racist stereotypes, Norville hates weed because it's against a typical black teenager STEREOTYPE. Half the damn jokes relied of stereotypes.
    The reason, the ONLY reason, they decided to swap the races of the main characters was so they had a excuse to make racist jokes. It's actually vile that the creators thought this was an okay thing to do. News flash! If the punchline of a joke is your race, gender or sexual orientation then that's racist or bigoted. And to change the races JUST SO you have an excuse to make such "jokes" is just...awful.
    (also the ending with Velma and her mom kicking her father, step-mom and a BABY out of the house is framed as a good ending? wtf is wrong with Mindy)

    • @SaiyanGamer95
      @SaiyanGamer95 9 месяцев назад

      I imagine Norville hating drugs was specifically because Shaggy was always steroetyped as being a druggie, rather than it being race-related.
      Also, about Velma's family? There's an entire episode dedicated to Velma mending the bridge with her father.
      And if you want a good example of race-swapping in media, I highly recommend The Wiz. It's The Wizard of Oz, but with an all-black cast, even having Michael Jackson as the Scarecrow. I do also hear there's an all-Indian (as in, from the country of India) version of the Archie series called, well, The Archies.

The show itself is wierdly misandrist and racist to the extent every single episode has at least 8 disses about how men, especially white men are terrible or rapists. speaking as a HUGE scooby doo fan, velma was a big disappointment for me because i really, genuinely did want to like it. it had a decent premise, an eyecatching art style, and nice redesigns. but in the end it was just... empty. no soul, no heart, nothing-- just a bitter, gross mess. it doesn't even make me angry, like certain other scooby media (scoob is much worse than velma, i promise you. at least velma was TRYING to be something, even though it sucked), just disappointed. what a waste of potential.
    so, as a pallet cleanser, here's some other, much better, scooby doo titles to watch that also have an edge to them without stripping away the fun of the series:
    - mystery incorporated (HIGHLY recommend)
    - be cool scooby doo (push past the artstyle, i swear its a solid show)
    - scooby doo on zombie island
    - scooby doo and the witch's ghost
    - moon monster madness
    - scooby doo and the curse of the thirteenth ghost
    - happy halloween scooby doo
    - straight outta no where: scooby doo meets courage the cowardly dog
    and if you're looking for some purely goofy and wholesome fun:
    - scooby goes hollywood
    - sccoby doo and the alien invaders
    - both the live action scooby movies
    - scooby doo in where my mummy
    - legend of the phantosaur
    - scooby doo and kiss: rock and roll mystery (HIGHLY reccommend, this movie is ridiculous and it knows it)
    - both the lego scooby movies
    - whats new, scooby doo
    - the thirteen ghosts of scooby doo
    - a pup named scooby doo
    scooby doo is, genuinely, a super diverse franchise with a lot of hidden gems to find. even though the characters usually stay the same, the setting and premise is always changing, and it always makes sense because scooby can work in any setting! that's the joy of an episodic mystery show, and that's why its lasted as long as it has! not every piece of scooby media is good, but personally, i always find some joy in seeing how they shake up the formula. to all who choose to partake: good luck on your scooby doo journey!

    Goosebumps sounds like it was written by someone who desperately wanted in on that Stranger Things vibe/fame/money, but had literally 0 talent to make it a thing.
    Secret Invasion sounds like they got the idiot who decided on the "make Captain America a secret Hydra Agent.... oh and he's also from another dimension and really REALLY cares about test scores because that somehow maybe proves his point" storyline and put them and the person responsible for the She-Hulk series together as the head of cocaine... and scriptwriting.

    To be fair, Grogu isn't the first character to be suddenly extremely popular, so it's expected that he has more focus (and merchandise). He's like Fonzie and Steve Urkel in a way, as they way are more popular than the "average" main protagonists that came before them to the point that they were promoted to main protagonist status themselves in later seasons. The other characters are likable on their own right, but they just don't hold a candle to the likes of Grogu, Fonzie, and Steve, who are all better by a mile.

    Ahsoka realy had potential, especially with Thrawn coming back, but it turned out so boring and slow and as a fan of the character Ahsoka, I just wonder how Filoni could write her so stern and almost emotionless. I also don't get why we needed to travel in a whole nother galaxy when we could have done unknown regions. They would need the map to travel into the unknown regions because without a route they would get into a black hole or something. At least Rwby V9 was more fun and, just an opinion, the fights where better. The Mandalorian S3...I can't say anything about it because I can only remember how there where B2 droids and the dark saber got destroyed. Thats how memorable the season was for me.

  • @rottenappple3716
    @rottenappple3716 8 месяцев назад +1

    This was great! But I want to respectfully disagree with the Barry entry specifically. I only recently watched Barry from start to finish, and the thing is that I think season 4’s deviation from the original premise is perfectly acceptable, when you acknowledge what all the characters represent thematically. Barry’s probably the easiest example, his religious shift sounds super weird, but it makes sense when consider that he kind of person he is. Barry isn’t confident enough in himself to make decisions, so he needs to externalize his life choices to someone/something that’s easy to follow. He’s never really passionate about acting or being a hitman, because neither of those things were central
    To who he is, he did them for the sake of having a purpose. Having a “purpose” is so central
    To who he is that he really doesn’t care what purpose he’s serving so long as he has one. Religion is the newest, and frankly easiest purpose he’s chosen, because it gives him the most security with the least strings attached. I could say similar things about the rest of the cast, they aren’t acting out of character, they’re being challenged in ways that push them to show their deepest possible motivations. Sally and Gene are spineless cowards who don’t want to face the consequences of their actions, and only care about being out on a pedestal. Sally never really loved Barry, he was just easy did her to be around. The second he became inconvenient, she dropped him, which is why their marriage is so stale and depressing. Hank and Fuches become intertwined in this season, not out of their surface level personalities, but out of what they both represent. Fuches represents coming to terms with one’s own self deception and manipulation, finding strength by acknowledging one’s weakness and shortcomings. He gets what is probably the happiest ending, because he finally drops the bullshit that is the defining theme of the series. Hank on the other hand can’t cope with the fact that he lost the love of his life to his own selfishness, so he constructs a persona where he’s a noble, kind team player that honors Cristobal. By the finale, Hank and Fuches are polar opposites, and I’d argue that those parallel journies have groundwork back in season one. I totally get if people disagree, but I do wanna say one final thing. Barry was never a good person. Sally and Hank and gene, these people arent good or moral. Your not supposed to care deeply for them like your friends ir family. this show is a statement amount the consequences of lying to yourself and manipulating others, and it’s not supposed to and you happy, it’s supposed to make you think. Atleast that’s what I think.

    • @rottenappple3716
      @rottenappple3716 8 месяцев назад +1

      TLDR; Barry’s cast isn’t acting out of character or deviating from the premise, it’s just reframing the show’s themes and ideas to make them more dynamic.

The first episode I had ZERO idea what was happening and went online and saw you had to watch all of ANOTHER unrelated show to understand it? That was just the first and last straw. Disney just imploded this year, bad. This video nailed it. They renewed Mando because of baby yoda and needed their one good show around. Pascal is too big an actor to be slumming in a bad TV series on fumes. If I were him, I would be heading for the door.

And the writing was just fantastic. I absolutely loved the series and how perfect it ended. And despite its issues, I still really enjoyed watching Ahsoka. The acting and the action was great. The characters and the writing could have been better, but then again, the 1st season of Clone Wars wasn’t great either. Besides that, calling these the worst shows of 2023 is a bit harsh because there’s a lot of fantastic stuff in them.

But no, they had Tree god... thing. And at the end, the WHOLE jury was irrelevant. Leave Jaune old, set the jester free, have Ruby suffer relapse of PTSD, make Weiss become more and more angry with Black and Yang because they are to busy with each other to see Ruby suffer. ANY of these... maybe not all, would have worked. I mean could you imagine Jester Cat vs Salem??? Two powerful villains with very different goals that seam similar.

Why would you change how a character that already exists looks? It just comes across as virtue signaling. But I thought that as long as the show was good, then I wouldn't really care. But... it's just... I don't have words. I don't know what I witnessed. I don't usually insult people who make terrible shows, but there is something mentally wrong with the person who wrote this. Asoka is kind of worse then you think because the story is basically a part 2 of star wars rebels not clone wars. They could have easily made this the next season of rebels, I don't know why the called it asoka because she dosen't feel like the main character. I think it's a shame because they have the perfect place for a story all about her, right between clone wars & rebels. There's a pretty good time gap they could play with.

    Critter, while I totally agree with the vast majority of choices on this list, frankly I think it's a little disingenuous to have both Ahsoka and Loki on here when you;
    1. Didn't watch either Clone Wars or Rebels, which sets up a large amount of the conflict that leads up to the show.
    I agree that it probably could've been a movie instead of an 8-episode series, but for being what it was? It was a helluva lot better than a lot of the shit on this list. I'd STRONGLY encourage you to watch Clone Wars and Rebels first, then go back and watch Ahsoka again. Maybe it'll give you a fresh perspective.
    2. Didn't get through the first three episodes of Loki Season 2, which were mainly filler episodes to depict the aftemath of the first season's events.
    It's very slow to start, but once it picks up it goes HARD. It's like Persona 3 if it had time travel and shit and without the Personas, right down the ending. Maybe it another shot from where you left off?

      I would argue the problems I had with Ahsoka didn't have to do with not knowing about the prior characters from Clone Wars or Rebellion, my real major problem was the pacing, editing, and script. I don't personally think prior knowledge of the cast would change my mind about those things.
      Loki IS only a dis-honorable mention, like if I had done my "Worth Watching" format for Loki instead, I still wouldn't have felt compelled to watch the rest of the show.
      Especially now after Johnathan Majors was found guilty, I'm not so sure I want to watch his performance as Kang for the rest of the season.

      Okay, I'll concede that point about Ahsoka. And while I think that the sins of a single actor shouldn't take away from the ability of a character or show, I can respect that decision about Loki out of principle.

      I liked She-Hulk. The first episode was really bad, and did a terrible job establishing the idea it was a slice of life situational comedy. But the rest of it was fun :)
