  • The Big Bang Theory was huge. And Young Sheldon has been running for 6 seasons. With it's ending being announced let's discuss how Young Sheldon didn't just save the Big Bang Theory but it reinvented how we saw it's biggest character, Sheldon Cooper.

    Young Sheldon is shockingly good, and it's not just the spectacular performance by Iain Armitage. The entire cast was terrific, especially Jordan Montana and Raegan Revord who play Sheldon's siblings.
    I am looking forward to what Iain Armitage does next in his career. He's a true talent

      i agree. he’s still very young, but he was a little kid when the show started, all the more impressive. AND he had to live up to jim parsons. it's hard to adapt a beloved character but he does it so well. i was actually taken back at how good and funny the show is, especially because i thought BBT was kind of obnoxious, lol

      For years I refused to watch Young Sheldon, because it came out at the time when tBBT was rapidly becoming unwatchable. I thought if they could not come up with ideas for TBBT anymore, how can they make a good spin-off. So I recently gave it a try. The first few episodes showed promise, it soon became very clear that Young Sheldon was very mediocre. I have now given up watching it.

    One of the better aspects of Young Sheldon was Georgie and Mandy's pregnancy. Seeing Georgie stepping up to be a father was one of the best plotlines of the show to the point that there are comments that fans were there more to see Georgie than the titular Sheldon

    Okay, I have to comment on the Whole Sheldon and Penny thing. It wasn't hard to figure out even before Young Sheldon came out. The Second Missy showed up and she was basically Penny as a brunette with a Texan accent, the parallel between the relationships wasn't hard to figure out. Sheldon was reminded of his sister and she was trying to be nice because of Leonard and the fact that they were neighbors, until she fell into the role of surrogate sister. The thing they got so right is that BBT caricaturized his family through the lens of someone who didn't observe or understand the nuances of what his family went through- only focused on how he was affected. YS focused less on Sheldon and more on the family and their real problems and feelings. Missy, George, and Georgie felt ignored, Mary didn't want people to think poor of her or her family, George was having real adult problems as the family breadwinner in a time that the middle class was starting to fall apart. Georgie wanted to be his own man and frankly showed a LOT of responsibility as he grew up, and George felt like many fathers do as their eldest children want more independence without the knowledge of how hard being an adult really is.
    And the introduction of Paige was genius because it showed another brilliant child physicist who was more emotionally intelligent than Sheldon but lacked the feeling of peer connection- she couldn't find her people the way Sheldon eventually did. I want more of her story and where she ends up. Its a shame she isn't at all a part of BBT because she would have finally found a place of acceptance among Bernadette and Amy.

      Paige's story is a real tragedy: a genius left alone without the companionship of like-minded people. It eventually led to her giving up all of her academic brightness and in the end, she remained a shell of herself with a pretty bleak outlook on life. Paige is what Sheldon would have been like had the Cooper family been dysfunctional and Sheldon never had Tam, Dr. Sturgis, Dr. Linkletter, and all of his friends at Caltech. So many things that went right for Sheldon went the opposite for Paige. Life dealt her a very bad hand, and she succumbed to it.
      One can only imagine what became of her: a burnt-out genius, who has lost everything expected of her. We might never know what she did later in her life, or if she is even alive by the time of TBBT. We cannot rule out the possibility of her killing herself, disappointed and tired of life never going her way. Truly the most tragic character of the entire franchise.

    • @Sumguyinavan_
      @Sumguyinavan_ 21 день назад +3

      @@TravelleroftheMicrocosmos and its even sadder how much of it is a product of just her being a girl. Sheldon is obnoxious and rude, Paige is generally friendly and easy to get along with- and people still had the easier time getting along with Sheldon. Sheldon gets his academic approaches rejected by established career scientists because of his age, not gender, so he just sees his acceptance as inevitability instead of something he will battle his whole life for.
      We got to see in 1 episode what young Raj, Leonard, and Howard were like listening to the same radio broadcast as Sheldon. So we wonder what it might have looked like if Paige was doing something important to her and we had seen Bernadette and Amy doing the same- not that they ever got to meet and become friends

    I think Sheldon maybe saw Penny as a do-over bond with a sisterly figure. He and Missy were often at odds growing up and their relationship was often delicate but with Penny he tried more to be there for her as well as letting his guard down and letting her into his world. He wasn't afraid to be vulnerable around her and while he did flex his usual brand of superiority around her he also knew to sometimes just talk to Penny like a human. He genuinely values Penny and her role in his life and it was sweet to see.

    • @Melanie-jy2nw
      @Melanie-jy2nw 19 дней назад +5

      yeah I think his relationship with Missy is unfortunately marred by the history they have (insecurities and problems, parental favoritism, etc) in childhood. While they'll always love and be there for each other, they can't have that same ease he has with Penny.
      Penny and Missy have similar dynamics and personalities with him but with Penny, none of the past problems/feuds hold them back from just hanging out easily. With Penny, he's also an adult who is surrounded by a community that understands him a lot more and what he does doesn't reflect back on her. Whereas in Texas, he's the odd duck out and his behaviour is reflected onto Missy and causes her trouble at school. He probably is also frustrated that she fits in so easily where he doesn't. There's just too much history.

      Family shows has a friendly but clueless dad, an uptight mom, 2 or 3 kids with unique quirks. The closest to this one is probably Family Ties.

    I never questioned Sheldons and Pennys relationship and always saw it as some sort of sibling relationship. It just kinda made sense. Honestly, i found sheldon and penny being friends more believeble than Penny and Lennard. Not because she is „hot“ and he is „smart“, but there is just no depth to them. Like, what do they talk about? What do they like about each other? It is never explained. They are just together.
    They only talked about kids when they were already married. Like who does that?

    As someone on the autism spectrum one of the difference between the Big Bang theory and young sheldon is how they portray his implied autism. In the Big Bang theory Jim Parsons decided to portray him as autistic from the sheldon’s quirky jokes which made it feel like a joke and a punchline whereas in young sheldon his autism is actually much more realistic, yes he has moments where he’s “odd” but he also has sensory issues, routine difficulties and hyperfixations which were all jokes in the Big Bang theory

    Mary's "hatred" of George Sr. is dealt with so beautifully in the YS finale. She hates him for dying on her, not for cheating (which he didn't do).
    The cheating plot point again was revealed (or I guess retconned) to be another case of Sheldon being an unreliable narrator who didn't full understand the relationships around him. That incident is also the origin of his knocking 3 times, yet another iconic quirk of Sheldon in TBBT.
    Definitely seems like this video deserves a remake now.

    I loved how the relationship between Sheldon & Penny developed over the years. I never for one second thought it would ever be a love triangle. I can see how Penny would remind him of his sister but I think she also reminds him of his meemaw (as portrayed by Annie Potts.) She loves & supports him but calls him on his stuff. The hardest thing for me about Young Sheldon is waiting for Sheldon's dad to die.

    One of the major issues I always had with TBBT was that the gang of Leonard, Sheldon, Howard and Raj were always described and seen by others as nerdy guys who like niche things.
    However, they can't actually convey that in their characters, because they can't alienate the general audience.
    They have to reference popular things that most people would know about, so that an audience member can go "Hey, they referenced the Flash being fast. I know that character and that they're really fast"
    (Another example is that there was an episode where Penny was stumped that the gang would go watch an extended edition of the Lord of the Rings in theaters, as if the Lord of the Rings isn't one of the most popular film series in the world.)
    So when I picked up Young Sheldon, I was expecting that there'd just be more of the same.
    Oh boy was I pleasantly surprised by what I found.

      @@raven1436 If you meant he LoTR thingie, if I remember correctly they did, but the way that Penny's reaction was written was that she couldn't possibly imagine going to a movie theater to see a movie you've already seen for some additional footage and they acted as if the Lord of the Rings wasn't one highest-grossing film franchises ever and was some unknown and niche nerd stuff.
      There's only really one bit of actually kinda niche nerd stuff that I've seen in TBBT, which is that Sheldon wears different color lantern corp shirts while conveying uncharacteristically strong emotions (Green Lantern is pretty well known, but Sheldon has been for example shown to wear a Star Saphire lantern corp shirt while spending time with Amy and that lantern corp is specifically related to the emotion of Love)

I’m just saying as someone who definitely doesent consider myself nerdy I have more “normie” (such a dumb word) friends whom point out things being “lame” or “nerdy” to me all the time, do I necessarily agree with what they say? I think Sheldon's love of contracts was established well before the story arc with the data base. There was a much earlier episode where Sheldon and Missy were disputing about what to do that day. Sheldon challenged her to a series of competitions, each one involving a written agreement, to see who would get to pick what to do. She ultimately won the game but, as Jim Parson's adult Sheldon explained in the final narration, he had really won because they had wound up spending the day doing things he liked to do, staying indoors, playing intellectual games and, "Writing contracts." The business with the data base may have increased his need for contracts in life, but that was already something that was important to him.

    Meemaw provides conflict, joke conflict with George and real conflict with the gambling room.
    Missy provides some sadness with her feeling sad because of Sheldon taking all of the attention and some fun and danger when she goes away.

    I find it funny when people say the Sound guy wanted to put the laugh track every time, because it was proven there were very few moments the laugh tracks were actually artificially added.
    TBBT had an audience. Sometimes, the laughs were so loud because the actors had done something wrong, even them would complain and make people laugh harder, sometimes they couldn't laugh a lot through certain jokes, and in these times there were laugh tracks.
    Still, saying the show had laugh tracks added into the scenes artificially all the time is not true and I wish more people saw that. EVEN IF the audience had a fucking screen saying: Silence/Laugh, it's hard for normal people force out a laugh. And there's only many times you can re-do a joke to catch that reaction out from people in a live show like that.
    So yeah. TBBT have a lot of problems, to me, most of them happens in the five first seasons since some of the jokes aged insanely bably.
    But overall, it's a good show, better than Friends for me. Young sheldon is a very diferent kind of show, and of course some people who enjoys comedy won't like it because they are there for the laughs, not for the feels. YS goes for feels, not for laughs. Even if there are some wholesome hilarious moments in it.

They were at a better place and things started going well for the whole family. Now that I’ve seen both TBBT and YS, it is really beautifully crafted in a humanly way. The dance between the forward and initiative dialogue of TBBT vs. Young Sheldon’s more reserved and receptive type dialogue that’s more about the feelings and unwritten nuances. It’s like yin and yang. Complimentary yet contrasting. Very unique and one of a kind. Won’t get another Tv show that can do quite this. Even if Friends or HIMYM or any other popular show made a prequel it wouldn’t really be interesting. YS even touches on spirituality which I love how they included it respectively.

      @jec15 7 дней назад

      Well, it may seem that way, and that the retcon to some, may be seen as just shallow.
      However, this twist made as response to positive fan reception can be understood to be far compelling and a bit more complex than perceived.
      On the contrary. Sheldon's perspective led to a quirk that made him endearing to viewers. It showed Sheldon's situational perspective to be flawed - and this is nothing new, as it proves Sheldon to be a human. Despite being somewhat an accurate representation of knowing someone from the nuclear family being unfaithful - making things more relatable, that twist actually did more than just give clarification on the viewers' misgivings on Sheldon's initial perspective. His perpetuation of his habits based on both his perspective and his obsessive-compulsive trait made him a bit more flawed, hence more human.
      I wouldn't say shallow.
      Both series actually achieved what some other shows couldn't, and enriched each other.

    Since we now know that George DID NOT cheat on Mary, and in fact, Sheldon walked in on his parent role playing. (Although they both had a flirtation with someone else, neither acted on it). I think since, at the time of filming TBBT, Chuck didn't know there would be a Young Sheldon, it is safe to assume it was done for laughs. They could imply that Mary never got over the anger of George dying. It would fit with Georgie's statement that his mother was a mess after their father died. It would also fit with her comments at Sheldon's wedding that she wished George was there to see Sheldon get married and that he would be proud of him.

      With the ending as well, Mary’s character in the Big Bang theory makes much more sense with her having clung onto religion harder than ever after her husbands death and being unable to process that (along with her kids not being much help because of course they’re kids and dealing with the loss of their father, Missy especially, so religion truly was the only thing she felt was there for her) which is probably what made her become less nurturing and patient compared to her softer younger self.

    One of the many things I like about prequel shows, when they're done right, is how they handle with the fact that they've created characters and storylines that obviously weren't a thing when the original show was around.
    Sure, The Big Band Theory was still airing during Young Sheldon's first two seasons, so they did manage to include some things on the sitcom (like Sheldon's childhood friend Tam, or how Meemaw is a cowgirl), but, once it ended, they were left with the issue of "how are we going to deal with these elements, knowing full well that TBBT's canon is now set in stone?".
    Young Sheldon has chosen to fix it by making sure that, even if the characters and the events involved won't even get mentioned on The Big Band Theory, you still get the feeling that they have shaped some aspect of the adult Sheldon we've known for 12 years. It even gives you a rewatch bonus, because you can think "after Young Sheldon, this scene from The Big Bang Theory has a new meaning".

    Actually 🤓☝️ the contract thing sheldon does comes from him interfering in meemaw and dr sturgis's relationship when they first started dating (he even mentions by the end of the episode how he would end up using it in all future relationships). Correct me if I'm wrong though. Great video by the way❤

    Really funny how we still thought how Brenda Sparks was gonna be the fling but they literally stopped that in season 6 and the fact George cheated on Mary with Mary was another funny misconception by Sheldon

    In BBT, Georgie said he had a lot of mommas.
    Young Georgie is a gentleman and a great husband/father, hope that doesn't mean Mindy dies but just Old Georgie joking he said mommas hope that is true because I don't want to see a tragic character de-development of Georgie.

    The writers did a fantastic job and didn't treat YS as a cash grab flashback of sheldon for the fans of TBBT by focusing on the family which made the show it's own thing which is very enjoyable for everyone even if they didn't see TBBT while still giving the origins of sheldon weirdness for hardcore fans and the family having their own journey while dealing with sheldon is way better and more interesting than revolving around sheldon and lastly the cast is amazing and while the children were phenomenal but the parents gave the best performance

    I actaully really like how they explained the affair as a misunderstanding that sheldon never got the full story about. Also i still remember i avpided this show like the plague for years because i thought it was gonna be another trash fire spinoff we've seen a hundered times from other shows. I watched one episode and was genuinely surprised how much i enjoyed how it, it felt like iwas genuinely made with love

    As a matter of fact, George has never physically betrayed Mary, till his demise.
    Even at the time Sheldon came home early from the University and found George sleeping with a woman that looked differently, It was Mary in disguise that she wore for intercourse purposes. Up to the very moment that George died, he and Mary were fixing a lot on their relationship.
    So the question why did Mary remained so angry about George on TBBT stays unresolved.

    I think it would have been nice to see Sheldon’s family in the finale. Regardless of the falling out with the family a moment of winning the Nobel peace prize should have been a way to establish some communication. Yes the main cast of the Big Bang theory is the chosen family, but you can really never forget your own family. I mean it just make it seems that Sheldon doesn’t love them at all. Again regardless of what the circumstances surrounding their falling out was.

      sorry I know that you prob don't mean it to this extent but sometimes it is better to cut ties if your family is abuseive or toxic. not the case with Sheldons but still. (don't mean to be rude)

    I love how honest and heartfelt Young Sheldon is. It also seems to correct a lot of the plot holes about his childhood, from The Big Bang Theory. For example, George, Sr. wasn't the horrible person that Sheldon or his mother had described on The Big Bang Theory. On Young Sheldon, he very rarely drinks, except for an occasional beer during a football game, or at the local bar. He's not physically abusive, and families do argue occasionally. George and Mary's marriage is improving. Sheldon's relationship with his siblings starts out as sibling rivalry, but eventually, they do start to care for each other more. Missy has learned responsibility. Meemaw is strong and loving. And because of Mandy, Georgie has become a family man. Mary isn't the old school racist we saw on The Big Bang Theory; in fact, she's the one who had encouraged him to friends with Tam, in the first place. I've often read online articles and seen RUclips videos about the inconsistencies between these shows, and I agree. As Sheldon grows, he learns to understand more about the world.

    Idk why Mary’s emotional cheating with pastor rob in young Sheldon isn’t talked about more

    • @martyf3531
      @martyf3531 6 месяцев назад +19

      As story is from Sheldon's point of view, he wouldn't see and understand what Mary was feeling for Pastor Rob but actually saw George with someone.
      As someone theorized in a post on another video, Young Sheldon is the story of Sheldon writing his biography. And if that is the case, in my opinion, everyone added their own points of view except George, and everyone spoke nicer of him as he was no longer around.

      it makes her talking badly about him in TBBT hypocritical, also her kind of going of religion in YS and then being very obsessed by it in TBBT seem disconnected,

    According to Adult Georgie in tbbt, when George died, Mary was deeply affected and became a mess and he handled most of the families problems esp Missy. Let's see how they will play that out in the upcoming spin-off since he is now a starting young family man.

    I rewatched tbbt all 12 seasons in a few weeks and I literally love it, it’s my favorite show of all time, I have nothing to complain abt it and would watch way more than 12 seasons lol. It was kinda weird for me starting to watch young Sheldon bc of these differences. I literally just started, I’m on season 2 😂. Sheldon was always my favorite character and I was really curious to watch how his childhood would be and how they’d fill the plot holes about his life left in tbbt I was really curious abt. The format is different but I’m getting used to it and enjoying a lot lol
